Are you using your husband's Apple ID from his iPhone?
Do you have an iPhone associated with your Apple ID?
To associate Messages on an iPad with a phone number you need to have an iPhone that has the Phone number so it can be associated with the Apple ID being used on both devices (iPhone and iPad).

Apple doesn't give out phone numbers or wireless plans. Only the cell carriers do that. While A Cell Plan for an iPad has a number its just for Identification purposes by the carrier, and cannot be used for Messages.
Also it is not necessarry to have a cellular iPad with a cellular plan to have a number for messages. As I said, you need an iPhone to do this.

Uhmm, no, the number does not belong to the iPad. It belongs to the iPhone the Apple Id used on the iPad is associated with.
If you need to change that number, then you need a different Apple ID that is associated with a different iPhone number. Note, the number must belong to an iPhone with an Apple ID, otherwise it won't work.
The iPad itself has no number associated to it. It is linked to an Apple ID which in turn is linked to an iPhone that has a number.

You can link your iPhone telephone number to your Apple ID for use on your iPad, iPod touch, or Messages for Mac by signing into iMessage with your Apple ID in Settings > Messages. Then sign in to the other device with the same Apple ID in these locations:
iPad and iPod touch: sign in to iMessage in Settings > Messages.
Messages for Mac: sign in to iMessage in Messages > Preferences > Accounts.
Linking your iPhone telephone number with iMessage is not available for the iPad (1st generation) and iPod touch (3rd generation).

How do I identify the mobile number in Messages?

This isn't really an issue, more of a usage question.
When I start a new message from the Messages app, and start typing a contact name, I am presented with a list of numbers/email address for that particular contact. The issue is that the list doesn't identify which number is that person's mobile number, they all show up as available to send a Text Message to.
I have a feeling this is just "how it is", but I wanted to pose the question to see if anyone has come up with a clever way to work around this. Here are a couple of pictures to show what I am talking about:

In this area Messages is a disaster.
The FaceTime does have a way you can move people to an Favourites List even though the initial listing is from the Contacts App.
Messages does not have this.
Once you have connected to someone the valid iMessages contact in the drop down gets a blue speech bubble indicator.
I have noticed now though that other (non iMessages ones) are being listed as potential "text" ones even though they have not been used and do not have the green indicator for SMS chats. This does mean my Land Line is lists as a Text potential item at the moment where it used to be an iMessages Potential one in the past.
Whilst I did set up Contacts with a Group called "Regulars" I have found no way to have that show first in the Blue + icon selection method (far right after starting a New Messages) It can then be selected. It cannot be used as an option in the "To" spot drop down though.
The "Buddies" option just list those from the Buddy List accounts you have without distinguishing between Off Line and Available Buddies very well (they are marked in Green, red and Amber and then nothing. They are also doubled up if a person is in two or more Buddy lists if they have AIM and Jabber IDs for example.)
The group in the Contacts App is the closet to the FaceTime Favourites I have achieved.
However the cards added here may still show multiple telephone numbers such as Mobile the works and home Land Lines (only a partial move to what your want).
Of course it could be worse...
10 Logged in Accounts in addition to iMessages listed on at least three Contacts Cards (for three Computers) with some not linked to Address Card/Computers but basically listing all the workable connections between them.
I have not found a good work around for listing just the numbers you want.

It can not be changed however the behavious of iMessage and Facetime can be changed by removing the chek beside the number and address you don't want in Settings/Messages/Send & Receive and settings/FaceTime. The best would be to set your husband's iPad up on his own account for iCloud. You can leave the Stores logged into the same account to share apps and purchases. Messages and FaceTime are easier to setup and work much better on their own accounts, especailly if you both wish to use these features between yourselves.
