How do I change the "Permissions" on an external drive to 'read & write'?

I am experiencing a problem with an external Hard Drive that I'm now using with my iMac, that used to be connected to my old PC.
I can't write anything to it. When I check its "Info", under the "Sharing and Permissions" tab, it says "You can only read".
Does anyone know how to change this so that I can both read and write to the drive like normal?

Hello br121
You will need to *Partition and Format* the External Hard Drive.
+Warning save all the data to another drive, partitioning and formatting will erase your drive.+
If you want to setup the drive exclusively to use with the iMac (Time Machine, Cloning your Mac HD or storing large files) you will have to reset the partition map scheme to *GUID Partition Table* and format to *Mac OS Extended (Journaled).*
If you want to setup the drive so that both Mac and windoz systems can read and write to it, then you will want to reset the partition map scheme to MS-DOS and format to FAT-32
+(keeping in mind that FAT-32 has a single file size limit of 4GB)+
The following article by Ken Stone was written before Snow Leopard, but it's still very helpful because basic Disk Utility partitioning and formatting is the same.

If you get stuck you can refer to Ken's article above, Disk Utility HELP and or come back here.

  • How do I change the name of my hard drive which the photos and libraries are located on without having to relink and recreate folders for photos?

When I have tried to change the name of my hard drive which my photos and catalog are stored on, when I try and access the new catalog in the new destination yet still same physical hard drive it unlinks all the photos and the folder structure.
Any way to keep the photos or at least the year folders so as to more easily relink?

In the Library module, in the Folders tab on the left, do a right-click "show parent" until you can see the root of the drive.
From there, if you cannot rename the drive from there, then rename it in the OS finder/explorer. Then you just need to reconnect that one root directory or drive entry and Lightroom will do all the work for you.

  • I changed the format to an external drive and lost everything that was on it.

I changed the format on an external hard drive and lost everything that was on it. Is there a way to recover what was on it?

    1) Partition your hard drive or add an external drive and install Snow Leopard (with the Optional Rosetta) into it and then you can dual-boot (System Preferences:Startup Disk) into Snow Leopard and run FCE 3.5 there.
    2)  Use one of the following methods to install FCE 3.5 into Mavericks:
    a)  Pacifist:  http://www.charlessoft.com/
    b)  Jeremy Johnstone's Terminal method:  http://www.jeremyjohnstone.com/blog/2012-03-11-installing-final-cut-pro-studio-2 -0-on-mac-os-x-10-7-lion.html
Reports on this forum seem to confirm that Final Cut Studio 2 will continue to operate in Mavericks once it is functionally installed, albeit some plug-ins may fail to function.  FCE 3.5 is the same generation as FCS2, and presumably will continue to operate in Mavericks, as well.

  • How can I change the permissions on a USB so I can save files on it?

Recently I’ve got some issues saving files on USB flash drives. It doesn't allow me to save on them so when I check the sharing and permissions tab it says: “You can only read” Does anyones knows how to change this?

It could be that the drive is formatted as NTFS (default Windows file system). Out of the box, Mac OS X has only read support for NTFS. You can use Disk Utility to check that. If that is the case, you need to reformat the USB drive (this will destroy any data stored on it, of course).
    (1) If you plan to use it with Macs only, format it as Mac OS Extended, or Mac OS Extended Journaled. You should also check the partition map type, it should be GUID, which may, or may not, be set automatically when you reformat the drive.
    (2) If you plan to use it with Macs and Win and nothing else, format it as ExFAT.
    (3) If you plan to use it with Macs, Win, and other devices (eg, media players), format it as MS-DOS (FAT).
For (2) and (3), the partition map type should be MBR; again, this may or may not be set automatically. If it's not, you need to change it in Options.

  • How do I change the format of a hard drive I have to make it work with my imac

My friend has given me a hard drive to put some stuff on it for him, but it's formatted to Windows NT File System (VTFS) and I need to change it to MS-DOS (FAT32). How do I do this?
    Thanks

If you don't want to format the external disk, you can use a third-party application like Parallels NTFS.
That's the most recommended way. However, if you want to format your external disk in FAT32, you can do it without any problem.
First, open a Finder window, select the external disk in the Finder sidebar under "Devices", and copy all the data to a different folder.
Then, open Disk Utility (in /Applications/Utilities), choose your external disk in the sidebar, go to Erase tab and erase the disk. Make sure you have selected "MS-DOS (FAT)" in "Format". If you need detailed steps to do this, see > http://pondini.org/OSX/DU1.html
Finally, copy all the data to that external disk. You can also use exFAT, but in that case, you will have to format the external disk in a PC

  • How can I change the settings of an external hard drive?

I have a 250-GB external hard drive connected to my Mac mini, whose files and folders I can´t delete as it shows up as a read-only disk. According to the Mac help, I can use the files on a disk by clicking on the "Get Info" label and selecting "Ignore ownership on this volume" at the bottom of the menu. However, when I try to do that, the "Ignore ownership on this volume" checkbox doesn´t even show up on the menu. Any suggestions or alternatives to get to delete those files I no longer need? Thanks in advance for your assistance.

If you want to erase the entire drive you can format it with Disk Utility (in Applications/Utilities).
Mario is right about NTFS. If you drive is formatted as such (which would mean it was used by Windows at some point) then the issue is related to permissions (actually NTFS-formatted drives don't have permissions, but Access Control Lists instead), it's just that Mac OS X can't write to these disks.

  • How do I change the name of my external hard drive?

When I updated to OSX Mavericks my external hard drive changed its name from "HD-PZU3" to "HD-PZU3 1". Which you can imagine has messed up all my applications, the most important being iTunes, and it would be great if I could just change the name back so as to keep the preferences on most of my applications the same.

  • Change the partition of an external drive using Disk Utility?

I wish to change partition scheme, sizes, in an external drive. All the partitions are MacOS extended (Journaled) and they map, according to the layout in Disk Utility, as follows: Partion 1, 2, 3,4 where 1 is at the top and 4, the bottom. I want to make partition 2 larger, so I decreased partition 1 by half. Now the layout is 1 a, 1b, 2,3,4., where 1b is now free space. Disk Utility will not allow me to increase the size of  partition 2 by dragging the corner. Which of the following options (if any) will allow me to increase the size of partition 2, without erasing the data, using Disk Utility:
Select partition 2 and manually writing a new value in the size box, equal to the present partition’s size plus the free space?
If I delete partition 1 completely, will I then be able to increase the size of partition 2?
If I delete partitions 1, 3, and 4, will I then be allowed to increase the size of partion 2?
    Is there another option?
    Thanks
(Actually, partition 3 is an eDrive, a data recovery utility created by TechTool Pro 7, so I don’t really know how it’s formatted.)
OS10.9.4, MacBook Pro, SeagateHD 1.5TB USB drive.

You cannot re-size the existing partitions in such a way that you can take the space from a shrunken partition and add it to another partition. Disk Utility cannot do that. If you have an existing partition that lives above another partition, then you can delete the lower partition in order to expand the upper partition into the freed up space. This concept applies to any additional partitions that are below another partition. Disk Utility can do this. You can resize down, but not up, except when creating new partitions. You would need third-party software such as iPartition 3.4.3 to accomplish that feat.

  • How can I change the permissions in Mac OS X 10.10 to allow Illustrator to access the files on my shared drive?

When trying to save out a file to the printer that runs my printers, I cannot access that drive when saving in Illustrator CC. It will actually show up the first time I save, then if I try to save out another file, the entire "shared" directory is gone. I can still access my shared drives through my finder window, but now Illustrator. Does anyone now how to fix that?

I run a wide format printing company. I have my main computer that I design on, then a separate computer that runs my printers. So I do all of my layouts on my main design computer, then I save out a high res pdf to the printer computer. So all I am doing is saving a copy over to the program that runs my printers. I never had an issues until I updated to OSX 10.10 (Yosemite). What is weird is that they actually show up the first time I save a file out. Then when I go to save another file, they are gone. I have also noticed that in the top/middle of the "save" dialog box, there is a drop down menu of previous save locations and I can still access it from there, just not on the normal side menu.
I called Adobe and they said it is an IT issue and that something is blocking Adobe from having access to the shared drives. I am not an IT person. so I have no idea how you modify that. When I try searching for answers, all I can come up with is how the modify file permissions, nothing on program permissions. This same thing happens to all of my Adobe programs.

  • How can I change the permissions on a read only external HD

I have a WD external HD and I am transferring a file more than 4GB in size. The current partition scheme supported by Ma, being FAT 32, supports only up to 4GB in file transfer size. If I format the external HD on my PC in a NTFS file format it is supposed to handle file transfers bigger than 4GB. Which is true, but it only goes one way, so for example if I am transferring a file from PC to HD to Mac it works just fine, with a few minor hickups, but the other way it does not work at all. So if I want to add anything onto the external HD being hooked up to my Mac, and still being in NTFS format I get a message saying that I do not have sufficient privileges, and under drive info it says that it is read only. Any help on the topic, please.......All the best
    Rafcio

    Hi Rafcio
I get a message saying that I do not have sufficient privileges, and under drive info it says that it is read only. Any help on the topic, please
Basically, this is not a privileges problem, it is a limitation of the formats. OS X can read NTFS, but not write it. See How to transfer data from a PC to a Macintosh:
Mac OS X 10.3 and 10.4 work with local NTFS-formatted volumes. The volume will be read-only.
… and Boot Camp 2.0, Mac OS X 10.5: Frequently asked questions:
Mac OS X can read and write FAT volumes, but only read NTFS volumes.

  • How do I change all permissions on a hard drive in one shot?

I am a video editor who just moved a few hard drives into my new Mac Pro.
Unfortunately, all the footage is 'Owned' by the 'User' of the old Mac Pro. This means that I can't move or rename files, among other limitations I'm certain that I just haven't run into yet.
Instead of going one by one unlocking and adding myself as an owner with read and write capabilities, is there anyway to apply such a change to all files and folders on a hard drive in one action?
    Thank you very very kindly!

Select the drive or folder of files, then Finder > Get Info and apply your permissions and at the bottom is a spoky thingy that you click and apply to enclosed items.
Don't do this on a boot drive, only onto folders you know to be of the older user account. Not program folders or system folders as they have other permisssions settings.
If you have problems with user permisisons on your account, then there is a Step to fix that here
