  • How do I change the default application to open files.

I am rather new to Mac OS (using Leopard). I am rather frustrated, that I have not been able to find a way to change the default application that opens PDF files. I looked around the System Prefernces, couldn't find it, searched the Web, nothing. And I could not find an answer in this forum either.
So here is my question. How do I change the default application for opening PDF files from Preview to Adobe Reader? I do not want to have to click "open with" every time, I want to open a PDF file.
And how do I do this for other files also? For instance, I may want to open images files with Photoshop instead of Preview.

Hey ! I was going mad with the same question - and I'm not a complete newbie - so thanks to William for answering it - I knew I'd seen that dialog somewhere, but just couldn't find it. Text edit was driving me crazy telling me that .ppt files were screwed, now I've got em to open with Powerpoint...
In answer to your last question, Craig, the dialog that appears to ask if you're sure specifically says the change will relate to all .pdf files ( or .ppt or .whatever ), so it won't stop Preview from opening other types of files.
Thanks for the help - searched Apple support in vain on this one...

  • How do you change the default setting for RTF documents from TextEdit to MS Word

How do you change the default setting for RTF documents from TextEdit to MS Word, I download forms from the Canadian government and they use RTF as a standard, they are supposed to open as MS Word documents (Yes I have Office for MAC 2011) but when download the document it goes to TextEdit which messes up the form format. I can down load it right click and go "open with" MS Word but how can I get the default chnaged to save this step.

Thanks I knew this, I like Safari as I want to keep everything MAC, but if I use Firefox the documents open in MS Word straight away, I was just curious if there was some setting I could change?
In Firefox > Preferences, click the Applications tab. If RTF is there, use the pulldown menu in the Action column to pick MS Word. If RTF is not there, there are instructions here for how to add file types.

  • How do I change the default settings for opening documents on my macbook?

Hi I would like to know how to change the default settings for opening documents on my macbook. Everytime I try to open a doc. it automatically opens with Textedit, instead of Pages or another program.

Select any particular document you wish to fix. Press COMMAND-I to open the Get Info window. In the Open With section select the desired Default Application from the dropdown menu. Click on the Change All button to extend the change to all similar documents.
You can only assign one default application to one type of document.

  • How can I change the default application to open a filetype with to a terminal application?

I have recently installed mpv to get the best video playback for my mac, but I was wondering if there was a way to get video files to automatically open with mpv when they are double clicked instead of launching them through the terminal, the way you can do with applications.

You should only need the one "Run Shell Script" action.  You do not need any other Automator actions.
You get to provide the /path/to/where/you/stored/mpv
If you need to provide additional command line arguments, then add them to the command line before the "$f"
Once you save this Automator as an Application, you can then use the Finder -> Get Info to associate your video files with your application as mentioned earlier.
Once you make the file type association for all video files with the same .type, then when you double click on a file it will be passed by argument to your Automator app as "$@", which the 'for' loop will then put into "$f" that gets substituted on the mpv command line.
If you select a group of videos, with the .type you have associated wth your Automator app, and then use Finder -> File -> Open, your Automator app will be inoked with each of those selected files passed via "$@".  The 'for' loop will break apart "$@" into individual files that get passed to 'mpv' via the "$f" variable.
If you have different video .types and those different .types need different 'mpv' options, you could create a different Automator app for those .types that invoke 'mpv' with the needed options for those .types.
If all the different video .types can all use the same 'mpv' command line, you can associate as many different .types with your one Automator app via the Finder -> Get Info -> Open with -> mpv_automator_app, then click on "Change All"

  • How can I change the preferred WiFi network in my MacBook Pro

How can I change the preferred order of networks on my MacBook Pro? There used to be one network at my office. Now there is a second higher speed wifi network also present which I would prefer to connect to, but the Macbook connects to the older one unless manually changed.

Apple menu > System Preferences > Network > Advanced > Wi-Fi > Drag networks into the order you prefer.

  • How can i change the default application to vlc player for playing any videos on my macbook?

How can i change the default application to vlc player for playing any videos on my macbook?

    1. Control click the file you want to open.
    2. Click Get Info.
    3. Under open with, pick the App you want to be default.
    4. Click Change All Button.
    5. Confirm your decision.
You have to do this with every file that has a different extension. You can't change the default for every file with a different extension in a single operation.

Right-click on the document, select Get Info... In the lower half of the tall window that opens is a section labeled Open With (you may need to click on the disclosure triangle to see detail). • How do I change the default software that opens when I click on a document?

I'm not sure if this is the right neighborhood to post this question, but here goes. How do I change the default software that opens when I click on a document icon. I've been without MSWord for a long while, so all my word processing docs have been written in TextEdit, the stock mini-word processor that comes with OSX. Now I have MSWord and I no longer need TextEdit. Even more importantly, I'd like Word to automatically open when I click on a doc created in TextEdit. Adding ".doc" at the end doesn't do it. It's still refers to TextEdit to open the document.
    Any advice?
    Thanks,
    John

Select a document of that type in the Finder, choose Get Info from the File menu, change the application under Open With, click on Change All, and confirm your action.

My mother used to be the bill payer on my iTunes account so now every time I send an email from my iCloud account it sent with her name, how can I change the settings so emails are sent from myself?
I've changed the bill payer to myself but it stills says on emails that I sent that its from my mother.

In order for the "From" field to show you options on the "from" addresses available, you must set them up in the Preferences > Accounts first.
I can't show you a screen shot of the from field because I currently only have one account, so the from address used is the default. However, when I had more than one, then options will show up in your compose/reply window.
You'd need to add an account here:

I click on select file on the website
You are attempting to download the picture to your computer not uploading photo to the website if I am understanding you correctly.
To change the download direction, you must do so through your browser's Preferences.  If you are using Safari, hopefully, someone who uses Safari will help you and/or post over in their forums.  I do not use Safari.

  • How do I change the font size of a document when I PRINT?

How to I change the font size of a document when I print it?

To specifically and fully answer your question, no, you absolutely cannot change the “font size” as a function of print.
First of all, there isn't a single “font size” associated with a PDF file (and we assume you are referring to a PDF file since this is an Acrobat forum).
Secondly, PDF is a final form file format meaning that the content is static in terms of location, size, etc. on the page. To change the point size of any particular text, you really need to go back to the source document and make the changes there.

  • How do I change the default program to open Pages docs to the old (4.3) version instead of the new one (5.0)?

How do I change the default program to open Pages docs to the old (4.3) version instead of the new one (5.0)? When I do what Apple said and go to a Pages file in finder and select "get info" then select "Pages 4.3" and "change all" it just defaults to the new one even though I'd selected the old one. Do I need to completely uninstall the new version of Pages or is there another work around because the new version of Pages comes dreadfully short of the features I need that are included in the old one?

    Eric Kraft wrote:
HOWEVER, if you modified a document in 5.0, 4.3 can't open it. You'll have to use Time Machine to replace the modified version with an earlier version that was last modified in 4.3.
    Actually there is a workaround.
If you open the file in Pages 5, it can then be exported on Pages 0.9 format to another folder. I had to do this as the document was only in iCloud and couldn't be recoverd by Time Machine.
    Worked for me!

  • Ask your question. How do I change the template for a pages document

How do I change the template for a pages document?

Once you've opened it, the opened document is no longer a template. Edit it as you would any other Pages document.
If you want to use the edited document as a Template, then , after editing, go File > Save as Template, give the new template a name, and click Save.
The old template will remain available in the location where you found it; the new one will be in the My Templartes sectionof the Templates Chooser.
