I purchased a USB Floppy Disk Drive in an attempt to move information from a 1.44 mb floppy disk dated back in November of 2009. This information is very important to me which is why I originally put it on this disk for safekeeping. Little did I realize
that with time these updated computers no longer have floppy drives on them, which is why I ended up having to purchase the device to get it off the disk and unto my computer. It's called "Sabrent" and it worked very well but when I went to open
the file into a program, all these crazy-looking fonts and symbols popped up in the place of the actual english-typed document. Now I know when I originally put my information on the floppy drive I did it in english. A few of the words are still readable
but 99% had turned into stuff not recognizable. It consists of letters with all sorts of other strange symbols; upside down question marks, something that looks like the drawing of a sun, letters and numbers with dots on top of them. Just strange stuff I never
saw before. My computer has Windows 7.
I tried opening it up with several programs like Works, WordPad and Notepad but still nothing. I am not a computer expert but I can get around a computer very well but this is new to me. Why would all my document I typed in english change to unrecognizable
symbols and is it even possible to get back my original work? Any help will sure be appreciated and thank you.

You probably use the wrong application to open the files. If you upload one of them to some cloud storage site and post the link here then someone will tell you what's going on. Alternatively you could send me one of them for examination: pegasusDOTfnlATgmailDOTcom.
Note also that floppy disks were never a good backup medium, due to their poor reliability record. The same applies to CDs and to a lesser degree flash disks. I recommend you use a USB hard disk for your backups. Later on, if and when USB goes out of fashion
then you can copy them to whatever is in use at that stage.

You could modify the necessary values in the LDAP directory that the identity server stis on top of. ie:
(using an ldap browser) go to the following location in the tree:
dc=xxx, ou=services, ou=iPlanetAMAuthLDAPService, ou=1.0, ou=OrganizationConfig, ou=default
There should be a "sunkeyvalue" attribute there with the following value:
iplanet-am-auth-ldap-base-dn=o=xxx,dc=xxx
change it to iplanet-am-auth-ldap-base-dn=dc=xxx
Then goto
dc=xxx, ou=services, ou=iPlanetAMAuthService, ou=1.0, ou=OrganizationConfig, ou=default
There should be a "sunkeyvalue" attribute there with the following value:
iplanet-am-auth-user-container=o=xxx,dc=xxx
change it to iplanet-am-auth-user-container=dc=xxx
Try to login using LDAP authentication (ie goto to the url "your webserver"/amserver/UI/Login?module=LDAP)
If that doesn't work, then you will probably have to edit the XML template for these services. This can be done as follows:
Goto dc=xxx, ou=services, ou=iPlanetAMAuthLDAPService, ou=1.0
There should be an attribute there called sunserviceschema, whose value is an xml document that specifies the service schema.
You will need to change the following element:

I am a new Mac user. When my excel files were copied over from my MS PC they have come over as read only files. How can i change these to "normal" files as they were on my PC? Thanks

How do I change these icons?

Finder and Dashboard... I understand the procedure to change the icon for most apps (open the "get info" window of the icon I want, copy the icon and then paste it to the "get info" window of the app I want to change)
But when I do this with the Dashboard icon and then drag it to the Dock, it reverts back to the original icon. What am I doing wrong?
And for the Finder, I can't seem to find where Finder lives on the HD (thus, I can't find the thing I'm supposed to "get info" on). Where is it?

You want to be careful with it, anything that becomes part of the system the way this does has the potential to be dangerous. But I wouldn't have recommended it if I found it to be any problem, it's really been amazingly stable for what it is. Being up to date on the software is very important but they update very quickly and if you have a version that doesn't work with your version of OSX you'll get a warning immediately and will be asked if you want to download the right version, always do it.
The good thing is that when it's not open it's not doing anything and can't cause a problem, and you only need to open it when you make changes.
You get 25 changes for free, after that you can still keep it and everything you've already changed but can't do any more changes unless you pay for it, but it's pretty cheap. So if you want to maximize that open it and make sweeping changes everywhere, it all counts as one change. If you open it up and change one thing that also counts as one change. So with careful planning you can keep it to the 25 and use it for free.
Personally I bought it, I change things all the time, I don't always want an icon to last forever. I've changed the generic folder icon 5 times, but I might have a permanent one now.

Although this sohould be asked and answered in InDesign/CS5 forum. it's not really an issue of InDesign. Its an issue of the Mac operation system
close up and quit everything back to finder.
Next locate a bunch of indd cs4 documents.
highlight them has to be a minium of 5.
now from finder go to file > Get summary Info.
next locate button showing what applications opens the files.
click on button and choose InDesign CS5.
now under tha button click on Change All ... and click Okay.
Now all your indesign files will open with the indd CS5 application.
if you would rather just open an individual file if you have a 2 button mouse
Click the right mouse button on the desired file.
hold until context menu pops up click and hold on open with...
a new menu gets built of desired applications
choose InDesign CS5 and it will open.
This allows a given file to open with desired application but doesn't change file types.

When I try to print a download from the internet, it makes me save it first before I can print it. I want to be able to view the document then print it immediately. How do I change these settings?

Is it possible to change the datasource associated with a report via web services consumer api's? I have a report that has a default database(a), however, we would like to, at runtime, have the report to query a different database(b). At the present time, trying to access the report while supplying it the new datasource information does not work with either the java nor the .net consumer api's.
Does anyone know if this can be done? If so, please provide the details of your success, so that I can try replicate the same procedure.

I'm attempting to follow the directions in the Upgrading and Migrating Guide for Leopard. The Mac has two hard drives in it. Batman contains the active server running 10.4.11. Magic is the hard drive that will run 10.5.2.
Since I'm moving from one hard disk to another (as opposed to an entirely different Mac), things ought to be fairly easy. But not for me. ;(
What I'm trying to do: Migrate the mail database. (I have managed to import users and groups; only the mail service will run on this machine.)
Problem: I can't change the owner and group settings on the various files in the var/imap and var/spool/imap folders (for example, so that they are owned by system or _cyrus, with group wheel or mail and everyone set to read only).
The owner and/or group often shows up as unknown (which is to be expected with the migration to a different hard drive). But how can I change these permissions?
Or is there a way to use a command to copy them from one disk to another? I tried ditto, but didn't get the syntax right (the files were copied to the same level as the imap folder rather than within it) and now I have a bunch of files owned by nobody that I can't delete because I can't change the owner.

I'm having a very difficult time finding an answer to this question. I have a brand new xserve (10.5.2) up and running fine with a single web site with wikis and blogs enabled. I can get to the web page and the wikis with no problems.
The problem is, the default folder for the web home page and the wiki information are on the system drive. I need to have those folders on another partition. I created a folder called /Collaboration and one called /Webdocs on the partition on which I need these folders.
When I put a copy of index.html into the webdocs folder, the web site shows up fine in a browser window. Wikis show as being "disabled" though. The folder for the wiki files has me as the owner since I created it. I've read on a few posts in these forums that the owner of that Collaboration folder needs to be "teamserver" however, I am unable to change to that using Get Info, like I could with a Tiger machine.
Could someone please tell me how to do this? Thanks.

On desktop almost all icons are Mozilla icons. How do i change them to the icons of the web sites?

You can't and that is very wasteful of resources, good thing computer now have a lot more storage and memory. That used to be something that slowed down system startup.

Suggest you make them keyworded bookmark shortcuts then you can call them up from Firefox with a name you assign yourself typically 1-7 characters, could be all initials in some cases, words, or anything.

I keep most of my keyword shortcuts in one folder "K" on my bookmarks toolbar, and the keyword is at the beginning of the title and sorted on the title so they are sorted on the keyword. The current folder actually has a distribution date on it so it isn't as short a name as I had intended. The "AwesomeBar" feature helps me to remember one if I forget it.
