How do I check my disk space

I can't convert a newer microsoft word file from a thumb drive onto my imac because I don't have enough "disk space."  Any idea on how to get around this.

Select the icon representing your startup volume on the Desktop or in the sidebar of a Finder window. Open the Info window. What is shown for "Available"?

buy an external HD   1TB for $60
NO notebook is a mass storage device, so dont try to turn it into one, it doesnt work that way.
Unless youre using it every couple weeks, its static data and should be on an external HD
In the case of a Macbook Air or Macbook Pro Retina with ‘limited’ storage on the SSD, this distinction becomes more important in that in an ever rapidly increasing file-size world, you keep vital large media files, pics, video, PDF collections, music off your SSD and archived on external storage, for sake of the necessary room for your system to have free space to operate, store future applications and general workspace.  You should never be put in the position of considering “deleting things” on your macbook SSD in order to ‘make space’.
Professionals who create and import very large amounts of data have almost no change in the available space on their computers internal HD because they are constantly archiving data to arrays of external or networked HD.
Or in the case of the consumer this means you keep folders for large imported or created data and you ritually offload and archive this data for safekeeping, not only to safeguard the data in case your macbook has a HD crash, or gets stolen, but importantly in keeping the ‘breathing room’ open for your computer to operate, expand, create files, add applications, for your APPS to create temp files, and for general operation.

  • How to reclaim the missing disk space

i have a t61 with a 250gb HD.  when i migrated to window xp the local disk c  showed only 120gb and there is no other local disks appeared on the window desktop. can anyone help me how to recover the missing disk space. i am not a computer
expert so please showed it as detailed as you could. thank you for your attntion

You probably installed from original Windows XP disk [w/o SP2], and original XP support disks only upto 128gb. If you install SP2/3 later on, the support will be added , but the partition woun't magicaly grow by itself If you want to resize it w/o loosing data you have to use 3rd party tools like GParted Live CD [free] or Partition Magic [commercial] software... http://gparted.sourceforge.net/

Run an App like Grand Perspective or Daisy Disk to visualize all your files, so that you can identify files not needed, or suitable for offloading to an external drive.

I've trying to install Workshop 6 update 1 but while installing and the application is checking for disk space it just freezes on me. One important thing, this system had Workshop 4, 6u1 and 6u2 installed. Do you have any idea what is going on, why it freezes when checking for disk space???

  • How do I gain startup disk space

Sorry for what is probably a stupid question ... I ran the usual software update and when I tried to install the Mac OSX update, I got a message that "Your hard disk does not have enough space" and "You need 5.19 GB of available space to download and install the updates. To increase available space, remove files from your startup disk, and then try again. "
But I have no idea how to access my startup disk (I didn't even know I had one). How do I find it and how do I choose which files can be deleted safely?
Thanks for any advice for this novice.

    A few suggestions:
    Empty the trash!
Open up your application folder & go through all your apps. Trash all the apps you no longer want and/or use.
An easier way to do this is to open the Application folder in list view & press the Command+j keys.
In the the dialog that appears, click the "This Window Only" button & the "Calculate All Sizes" check box.
Wait a bit until your file & folder sizes have all been calculated, then click the "Size" column to sort your apps from the fattest to the most anorexic.
Get rid of all your photo files you don't want and/or need. Same goes for those pics off the websites you downloaded (gifs, jpegs, etc.).
I'm old fashion. I still keep my photos in a photo album. So when people come over my house, they can actually "touch" & "feel" my photos without me running to my computer to "show my photos".
Get rid of all your music files you no longer listen too. Especially, if you already have the actual CD/DVDs or you can later redownload from a website.
Use Spotlight to make sure you got rid of everything. You can even trash directly from Spotlight!
Drag what you don't want and/or need to the trash. Better yet, download this neat little shareware app demo called AppZapper. It basically does all the work for you by not only trashing the apps but the apps preference files, caches & all its associated files.
Another software that does the above is AppDelete. Best of all this software is free!
Burn what you want and/or need onto CDs or DVDs.
Not everyone has the luxury of purchasing an external HD and/or Mobile accounts to store their "stuff, junk, music & photos".
You can check with your ISP to see if they offer free storage space. Most if not all do now-a-days.
There are thousands if not millions of free storage facilities on the web also. Use your favorite search engine to search them out as they come in different storage sizes to fit your needs & wants.
    Check for duplicate fonts.
    Applications>Font Book
    Select “All Fonts”
If you see any “black dots” next to any fonts this mean you have duplicates and/or multiple versions of these fonts.
    To clean this up, select a “black dotted” font or the Apple + click to select multiple dotted fonts;
    Edit>Resolve>Duplicates.
What the above does is turns off the duplicates & multiple version fonts. Not delete them.
More than likely the “extras” were installed by other programs and/or other users.
    Clear out font caches
Use FontNuke. It does all the work for you. And, best of all it’s FREE.
    Printer Drivers
Get rid of all the printer drivers you don’t need & use except the ones for your current printer(s)/scanner(s).
    HD>Library>Printers Folder
If you accidently threw something out that you needed for your printer/scanner it can be easily obtained from the manufacturer’s website and/or from the CD that came w/the printer/scanner.
    Garage Band
Has about 1GB of loops stored. Get rid of some some them. You surely don’t use, like and/or need them all.
    HD>Library>Audio/Apple Loops>Apple>Apple Loops For GarageBand
Or just get rid of the Garage Band app altogether if you don’t use it.
    Get rid of extra languages
Strip your computer down to your “native” tongue.
You can do this with a FREE utility called Monolingual. Another app that apparently does all the work for you. I’ve never used it. However, a lot of users here swear by & recommend it highly.
However, there is a warning for *native English speakers*. Make sure you keep BOTH English and English (United States).

  • How do I increase the disk space ?

I recently bought solaris for Intel. I success fully installed
with dual boot. When I am trying to install other software I got
a message saying insufficient diskspace. How do I increase the
space or set up a new partition.
    srinivas

    Hi ,
For your problem I would suggest following steps.
Use Format command to check whether any of disk partition or disk space is not utilised. If you have consumed all the disk space then only option to you is add new disk. If entire disk space has been utilised then you can't add more disk space on same disk. You need to have additional disk.
If you have any of the partion is still not used then you can merge the adjecent partition with it. Re-partition the disk. Here just ensure that if you have valid data on any of the patition which is going to merge with adjecent partition, then take backup ( ufsdump) as when you change boundary of partition you will need to make file system with newfs command which removes all data from that partition.
Please let me know if you have any questions.
    Thanks,
    SdD

  • How do i Check Hard Drive space in OS X Mavericks?

I don't know how to check my hard drive space, how much space I have left? On Mountain Lion i just checked it on Activity monitor. Now everything's just charts and graphs on activity monitor. Can someone please tell me how i can check ((((NUMBERS NOT CHARTS OR GRAPHS)))) how much space my hard drive has left?
    Thanks

Showing the status bar does NOT always show the disk space available.
I can open a new Finder window, and if it opens without the toolbar, there's no 'disk space available' to be seen anywhere.  In the status bar there's just the title of the window, repeated.  In the path bar, there's the path.  But nowhere is the disk space available to be seen.  The "show status bar" command under the View menu has already been selected -- if you go to the View menu you will see only "Hide Status Bar".
But - if you show the toolbar (View > Show Toolbar) and then hide it again - voila - the disk space is now to be seen in the status bar at the top, though it wasn't there before you toggled the toolbar view.
This is a Mavericks design bug, which - maybe - will get fixed, somewhere along the line.

  • Checking OS disk space

    Hi, everybody !
I would like to know, using a Oracle procedure, the Windows Disk Space.
For example, if my Oracle database have datafile in two drives (D: and E:) and I'd like to know the disk size and free disk space, is it possible using a procedure ?
I tried with a java program, compiled as java source but i am facing some errors.
    Thanks in advance,
    Joao Lanaro

    Hi, everybody "
To me there is not wrong, but let me explain, I have an instance used to monitoring another Oracle instances, so one of these checks is how much free OS disk space is available in each server.
I am using the Oracle scheduler to execute it sometimes per day. Because this I thougth that a procedure is the better option, I found a java program but I do not know so much Java and I could not fix the errors.
If I use a batch file, as you said, How can I use it into a procedure, How can I get the return of dir and use it to subtract or sum with my datafiles size ?
    Thanks in advance,

  • How do I free up disk space on my MacBook Air

    Hi,
I have a MacBook Air with a 128GB disk. I recently noticed that I seemed to be using up 74% of the disk capacity so thought I would try and remove some old video files from iTunes. When deleting the files I was prompted to remove the files from the file system which I did. I then empted the trash. But that seems to have very little impact on the disk space used. Considering I must have deleted about 20-30GB of files I would have expected the disk usage to come down a fair bit (I have a 128GB SSD).
Any idea how I can get my disk usage back down?
    Thanks

  • How can I free up disk space for iPhoto?

I'm a new Mac user and I've just received a message that says iPhoto has run out of disk space. I've only had this Macbook Pro since March and I do a lot of image editing, but I don't have thousands and thousands of photos or anything. I used the disk utilty and it still appears I have plenty of disk space in general. How can I allot some of this disk space to iPhoto? Is that possible?
    Thanks!

  • Checking free disk space after setting up Boot Camp?

    Hi team,
I've just gone thru the install process for putting Windows 8 on my MB Air.  Can anyone point me to info on keeping an eye on free disk space?
I have a 128Mb SSD drive, and prior to installing Win 8 I cleared a lot of media files off the SSD (which took ages to secure delete), but when I used the 'Get Info' option to see how much space had been freed up, the free space did not appear to increase by the amount I had deleted (we're talking about 22Gb of material deleted!).
Anyway I created a Windows partition of 30Gb.  When I boot into Win8 it reports only a few Gb free of the 30Gb partition... When I boot into MacOS it reports 36Gb free of the 90Gb partition.
Any help or links greatfully received!
    Cheers,
    Chris

Which internal drive option did you pick? The 3TB Fusion, 1TB Fusion or the standard drive option. It Matters.
If the 3TB Fusion model you can't install windows even with Boot Camp unless you jump through some Hoops and first brake apart the Fusion drive.
If 1TB Fusion or standard drive then you will need a Windows PC to make  USB thumb drive containing the Win 7 install files. you do that with a tool MS has, Windows 7 USB DVD Download Tool, or Yumi Multiboot or ISO to USB. And you first may have to make an ISO from the DVD or go to My Digital Life and download the ISO file of the version of Win 7 you buy and have a License key for, Home Premium, Pro or Ultimate.
Other then that you start Boot Camp Assistant, Found in the Utilities folder in Applications, and download the Win Support files and then partition the drive for Windows. It is all laid out in the Boot Camp help files and or online documentation.

  • How to zero-write free disk space?

    Hello:
I need to zero write the free space of the hard disk to ensure that data is
erased and because im using a virtual hard disk and i need to zero off free space to be
    able to compact the disk
how can I do that? is there any command to do that ?
    thank you everybody

Did everything proceed smoothly when doing this?  Posts I can see with this issue often indicate the user did something such as try to cancel the erase.  Normally it writes zeros, then deletes that file.  Have you tried a normal empty trash?
