how do you manage apps, clean caches, close apps running in background?

Cleaning cache is only necessary when the cache files are corrupt which is hardly ever. There is absolutely no reason to clean them periodically.
To close task running in background double click the home button. Then click the X in the upper lefthand corner to cloase.

  • How to - move ACR cache and LR cache and catalog

    Hi all,
in the try of speeding things up a bit with my LR (v. 2.4 64 bit on Vista 64 SP2, E8650 proc and 8 GB RAM) I got an 2nd hand WD Raptor 150 GB 10K rpm, and I'd like to move there the ACR cache (around 60GB now) and the LR previews and catalogs (around 20 GB) . Which is the right and safer procedure to do that!? :-)
Another question: my setting about File Handling are the following:
1680 pixels as standards preview file size
    Preview quality Medium
    Never discard 1:1 preview size
and in the grid mode (library) when I page down or up ... I always have the 3 white dots (of waiting) the pictures taken 3-4 secs go from fuzzy to sharp. How can I improve that time?
Thanks to all who will answer :-)
    Have a nice day,
    gianluca

There is nothing you can do to change the time that thumbnails to refresh. The fuzziness is normal while the three dots are visible and indicates that Lr is scanning the files within the Grid for external metadata or develop changes.
To move the catalog and preview folder you simply drag (copy) it to the new drive, open the relocated folder and double click on the .lrcat (catalog) file. The double click operation will open Lightroom with the relocated catalog active.
You can drag the ACR cache file to the new drive. However, to ensure Lightroom/Camera Raw use the correct ACR cache you will need to open Preferences>File Handling and point to the location that you want the cache files to be saved.
Be aware that moving above folder is going to take a fair amount of time, albeit significantly less than rebuilding the cache and previews from scratch.

  • How do i clean install and Downgrade from Lion to Snow Leopard?

Hello I want to sell my Mac Book. Lion already did not run well. Therefore I want to install snow leopard back on it and I want to wipe the computer. But it does not work. When I start the computer with the snow leopard and hold the c and apple button then there is only a white screen. I cannot delete the hard drive with the regular disc utilities program and apple r also does not work. What do I do wrong? Can someone help me here?
    Thank you!!

    It's C on start, not cmd (apple) + C.
Is the Snow Leopard disc the original that shipped with the Mac?
The retail SL disc is only 10.6.3 so won't boot any Mac that shipped with 10.6.3 or later.
It is possible to install SL on an external HD and update it to 10.6.8, then boot to it by holding opt (alt or ⌥) on start up and selecting the external from the list. Erase the internal HDD from the external's Disk Utility (select the top line - the one with the manufacturer's name and the size of the drive).
Then use the restore function in DU to clone the SL installation from the external back to the internal.

  • How do i clean up harddrive

I have 80g of photos and movies and music and apps.
139g of other. how do i clean up the harddrive. i called apple and they told me to go to the activity monitor, disk usage.
im afraid to do anything as it looks like french to me.
is there a utlity that is recomended like mackeeper i can use.
    any info would be great
    Thanks Aaron

First, avoid MacKeeper like the plague:
    http://www.reedcorner.net/news.php/?p=245
Next, you need to be more specific about what problem you're trying to solve.  Is your disk actually too full, or are you having other problems and assuming it's a full disk?
If the disk is full, there's not much advice better than Kappy's...  There's just no substitute for buying a larger drive when space gets tight.

How do I clean up my start up disk

If you mean that you want to free up space: move some large library to another disk (movies in particular), and move old files that you do not need (often) to another disk.
Using socalled "cleaners" is counter productive because they clean caches, and then they are filled again which costs speed: OSX has daily/weekly/monthly clean routines already.
Taking out languages that you do not need and the binary parts of apps, which can be done by some cleaners is not only counterproductive and often generating crashes, but this does not free up significant space.

  • Cleaning Cache History makes CPU hang for hours.

My FF settings history remembering is 90 days.
Each day having approximatly 1000 pages.
Today FF started to hang even when just writing thats why i wanted to solve problem with solthing witch has a problem- CLEAN CACHE AND HISTORY.
    1. Closed FF
    2. Opened FF
    3. Clicked to clean all HISTORY EVERYTHING
P.roblem- it started to use all CPU and every 25 second it pops up UNRESPONSINVE SCRIPT.
I click continue couse that of course is not for websites (couse none is opened now) but for history cleaning FF script.
Unless i click continue it doesnt work with cleaning history right? Or not?- all cpu is down, so no cleaning happening, but i want to clean history.

Current Firefox versions keep a maximum number of visited page and do not have a time limit for the history.
Firefox determines automatically how many pages can be kept without affecting the performance.
You can see the current value of this maximum as the value of the read-only pref places.history.expiration.transient_current_max_pages on the about:config page.
See Marco Bonardo's blog about this subject:
    * http://blog.bonardo.net/2010/01/20/places-got-async-expiration
If you still have browser.history_expire_days prefs then you can reset them via the right-click context menu.
You can delete all places.sqlite files including places.sqlite-shm and places.sqlite-wal in case there is a problem with the file.
You can check for problems with the <b>places.sqlite</b> database file in the Firefox profile folder.

  • How good is DSP caching?

I am trying to understand how good is DSP caching and what functionality does it exactly provide behind the scene.
It is very easy to check for exact repetition of a query in given time frame and returning older results from cache. I am wondering whether DSP does any of the advance stuff like following:
    1. Are new queries compared against old queries in cache to check whether data retreived by new query will be a subset of data retrieved earlier? If it does so, it could just query the data it already has in cache and return result set.
    2. If DSP does comparison as mentioned in 1, does it do comparisons individually with original queries in cache or with a unified version of all queries in its cache?

DSP caches only exact function calls - same function, same parameters, same user. This can be a top-level function, or a function called within another function.
Enable DSP caching only if you have an exact case that will benefit. I would recommend to only cache slow webservices - nothing else unless you really know what you are doing.
