How do I clean my hard drive to re-sell without a working disc drive?

I have macbook pro snow leopard. I wanted to clean my hard drive so all my files, informaion, and password get deleted so I can re-sell it. The problem is even though I have the installation disc, my disc drive isn't working... I tried putting my usb disc drive I got from apple, but the computer can't recognize it.
Is there anyway I can clean my hard drive without having to use a disc drive?

The easiest way to erase the HDD on the older MBP is to connect it to your newer MBP with a Firewire cable and set up Target disk mode. Open Disk Utility>Erase on the controlling MBP and erase the Target MBP HDD.

Any way to upgrade from Tiger to Snow Leopard without a working CD drive?

I have an older MacBook (maybe 5 years old). I'm running 10.4.11. I was happy with that until I bought an IPad. It wants Snow Leopard. But I just dicsovered that my CD drive has stopped accepting discs. I've tried everything suggested to fix it outside of taking the machine apart.
How can I upgrade to Snow Leopard now without it? Can it be done at an Apple store? I don't have an external drive.

Snow Leopard comes on a DVD. I believe your Mac has a CD/DVD disc drive.
It's possible that your disc drive has some dust inside. You can buy a disc drive cleaner disc. Might fix it. If not, the best solution is to replace the disc drive. Another option is to buy an external disc drive.
That said, if you have access to another Intel processor Mac, you can use a technique as described in the following links.

How can I clean my hard drive?

Hello everyone,
My macbook is now four years old and the last wipe is a while ago. My hard drive is quite ful and I don't really know what I can delete and what not. There's also 26 GB in Movies which don't appear nowhere. I really would like to get rid of them but don' know how. So, is there an application like CleanMyMac that is of any use or how can I wipe the hard drive myself (after I saved all my data)?

Boot from your Mac OS X installer DVD. After selecting a language, choose "Disk Utility" from the menu bar.
When Disk Utility launches, use the "Zero Out Data" option under the Erase tab. Erase the entire disk, not only the free space.
One pass of zeros is secure enough for normal use. One pass will take a couple of hours, so plan some time.

Can I restore my iMac hard drive to factory settings without the install disc?

I have an older iMac running iOS X 10.5.8. with a 2GHZ processor. 1GB DDR SDRAM with a Power PC G5 chip
We want to restore the hard drive to original factory settings but don't have the OS X install disc. I have been searching online to find a disc, and can purchase one, but I want to know if I can do this without the install disc? We want to do this so I can give this computer to my nephew. I have already backed up all data.
Currently I have gotten as far as clicking on the "ERASE" tab in the disk utility, but the "Security Options" and "Erase" buttons are greyed out (cannot click on them). According to the Disk Utility help, the buttons are greyed out because I must start up using another disc, such as the Mac OS X install disc.
In addition, I DO have the Mac OS X install for my 13" MacBook Pro. Can I use this disc for the iMac?
Bottom line, I want to know if there is a work-around without having to purchase another start-up disk.

We want to restore the hard drive to original factory settings but don't have the OS X install disc.
Why? Erase everything that isn't yours. Create a new id. Delete old id. Secure erase empty space on hd.
Once done, make a backup of the hd since the hd will fail eventually/soon.
Restore Tiger 10.4 & Leopard 10.5 DVDs may be available from Apple by calling 1(800) 275-2273. Have your serial number ready. Have your credit card ready too. There may be a small fee.

How do I install CS5 onto my new Mac OSX that has no disc drive?

I have the serial number and have loaded it onto one other computer, so I should still be able to put the program on my laptop as well. But it is giving me an error 6 for both PS and AI, but InDesign is saying I am missing files.
I have contacted the help center and it was no help, it was clear she did not know what to do because she kept asking me if I had a disc drive on my laptop which I had to keep clarifying that no, I don't.
I put the applications on a external harddrive and tried dragging them over onto my laptop, hoping it would just require I type in the serial number, but that did not work.

Correct. No install, no licensing system, no working apps. You must run the installer properly. Refer to the below articles:

Troubleshoot with install logs
Anything beyond that will require much more info on your part.

I read that I can install the software on 2 computers.

I disagree with your choice of a solution.
1) The answer does not mention removing the platters that contain the data from the drive, so I guess you'll just smash the whole unit. I don't know how recyclers operate in detail but making a mess of the drive will likely make it more difficult (impossible?) for the recycler to isolate the components that are hazardous or valuable. I could give you a bag of food and you could pick out the canned items, but if I run over the bag with a car a couple of times you would likely just throw the whole lot in the trash.
2) Removing a drive and taking out the platters would take you just as long as booting it up, erasing it with write zeros in Drive Setup while you do something else.
3) Some people can actually make use of a non-pulverized old drive. There are still people around who run G3s and look for compatible drives, especially if they are free. I know our local waste dropoff place also has a pickup area where you can look for things you can use, including electronics. The last couple of G3s I wanted gone I just posted on Craigslist and I had several takers (as recently as 6 months ago).

Mac OS X 10.9.1 will not read or write my WD external hard drive. How can I permanently make it so that it can without losing files on drive?

babowa, it seems like it is using Fuse & NTFS, so I don't think it's the classic WD + 10.9 mess, but extra WD tools & drivers can still break things MtTran.
MrTran, if you must use unsupported disk formats on your Mac you must also consider actually paying the developers that made the trial software.
It's probably a good idea to follow the developers removal instructions, reboot & then install one tool at a time.
MacFuse, FuseOSX, NTFS-3G are all likley to confict if you run older versions so you need to be sure you are using the latest version. I can't remeber which one depends on the other, so you will need to read the manuals.
When the disk is readable copy the data to another disk. You could probably do this from a Linux distro or Windows if OS X won't do it.
If you insist on only using the trial versions you will need to reinstall Mac OS, copy data off this disk & reformat it.

For iPhoto 09 (version 8.0.2) and later:
What you mean by 'share'.
If you want the other user to be able to see the pics, but not add to, change or alter your library, then enable Sharing in your iPhoto (Preferences -> Sharing), leave iPhoto running and use Fast User Switching to open the other account. In that account, enable 'Look For Shared Libraries'. Your Library will appear in the other source pane.
Any user can drag a pic from the Shared Library to their own in the iPhoto Window.
Remember iPhoto must be running in both accounts for this to work.
If you want the other user to have the same access to the library as you: to be able to add, edit, organise, keyword etc.
Quit iPhoto in both accounts. Move the Library to the Users / Shared Folder
(You can also use an external HD set to ignore permissions, a Disk Image or even partition your Hard Disk.)
In each account in turn: Double click on the Library to open it. (You may be asked to repair the Library Permissions.) From that point on, this will be the default library location. Both accounts will have full access to the library, in fact, both accounts will 'own' it.
However, there is a catch with this system and it is a significant one. iPhoto is not a multi-user app., it does not have the code to negotiate two users simultaneously writing to the database, and trying will cause db corruption. So only one user at a time, and back up, back up back up.
