How do I "clean" up my HD after making many movies in iMovie 11?

I have purchased an external HD but I don't know which "versions" of the movies it is ok to drag over. If I have  apple tv and my movies have been exported to itunes what do I do? The movies seem to be in many places and I don't want to drag them to the external HD only to have them then be unavailable for my apple tv. Should I also drag all of the raw footage into the external HD as well. Thanks for any and all help.

First, before you put anything on the drive, make sure it is formatted as Mac OS Extended (journaled).  Sometimes drives will come preformatted for Windows, and you will need to reformat it before using with iMovie.
For instructions see here.
https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-4362
Once your drive is properly formatted you can move Events and Projects to the external drive and save a lot of space. You should keep the raw footage if you think you may ever want to use it again. ALL Moves should be done from within iMovie. See this User Tip for details.
https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-4141
Finally, you can move your finished movies to the external drive if you want. If they are in iTunes, it may be easier to leave them where they are, but it is possible to move your whole iTunes Library to the external drive if you want.
What I do is keep a folder for my finished movies on an external drive. I go to iTune/Preferences on the Advanced Tab and Uncheck the box that says "Copy Files to iTunes Media Folder when adding to Library". Then I drag all my finished movies into iTunes. This way, iTunes sees them and they are available to Apple TV, but physically they stay on the external drive rather than being imported into the iTunes Library.

  • How do I remove white jagged edges after making image transparent?

How do I remove white jagged edges after making image transparent?  Is there a feature to help out with this?

It's a file format limitation. GIF supports 1 bit of transparency.  That is 2^1 (which equals 2 total) levels of transparency.  This equates to either NO transparency at all, or specifying 1 single color of the 256 total possible values to being fully transparent.
This will leave a very ugly fringe around the edge no matter what; it will only not be visible in color that match or are close to the fringe color; and then, that's a perception issue.
Try creating an alpha channel and saving the image as a PNG.  That supports 8 bits of transparency, which equals 2^8 or 256 total different levels of transparency.  This will let your image have very smooth edges with no jagged transitions.

  • After making a movie and wanting to burn a DVD, I go for iDVD in the 'DEEL'  menu. Then I get the question ' where is iDVD? What is the problem?

After making a movie and wanting to burn a DVD, I go for iDVD in the 'DEEL'  menu. After couple of seconds I get the question ' where is iDVD?
What is the problem? I cannot find iDVD in the programs map.
    regards Tonl

The current Apple thinking is that the entire world has access to fast broadband and wants to distribute home movies to friends and relatives via download (iCloud) rather than mailing them a DVD. The fact that nothing could be further from the truth has so far had no effect on this policy. If you scream and shout loudly enough down the phone Apple may send you a free copy of iDVD. That worked for some, but is now said to have been withdrawn by Apple. Also, you can complain bitterly here, perhaps suggesting that Apple could have provided a choice between using iCloud and burning DVDs:
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/
Whilst Macs with a Superdrive continue to be able to burn video DVDs, the software for so doing, iDVD, is no longer included in the iLife bundle that comes with OS 10.7 Lion (which also omitted iWeb) or will come with OS 10.8 Mountain Lion. And it is no longer included in the iLife 11 from the online Apple Store: http://www.apple.com/ilife/. Your only solution is to look on Amazon or eBay and try to get an older version that includes iDVD.
However, the vastly more expensive FCPX can burn a DVD without iDVD or DVD Studio Pro involvement, but lack the themes etc of iDVD.

  • About how long should it take to process a 1:40m movie in iMovie 11?

about how long should it take to process a 1:40m movie in iMovie 11?

    Hi
And the free space avail. on the Start-Up (Macintosh HD) also play an important role.
For interlaced SD-Video Quality (as on old fat TVs) - I never go less than 25Gb free space (per hour Video)
    For HD - about 4 - 5 times more
If strange Video-Codecs - that might need lot's of conversions to be used - then multiply with 2 - 3 times more and Hope.
I make the conversion of raw material first outside iMovie to make things easier.
TO GET IT TO WORK SLIGHTLY FASTER
    • Minimum of 25Gb free space on Start-Up hard disk
    • No other programs running in BackGround e.g. Energy-Saver
    • Don’t let HD spin down or be turned off (in Energy-Save)
    • Move hard disks that are not to be used to Trash - To be disconnected/turned off
    • Goto Spotlight and set the rest of them under Integrity (not to be scanned)
    • Set screen-saver to a folder without any photo - then make an active corner (up right for me) and set pointer to this - turns on screen saver - to show that it has nothing to show
    • No File Vault on - Important
    • NO - TimeMachine - during iMovie/iDVD work either ! IMPORTANT
    • Lot's of icons on DeskTop/Finder also slows down the Mac noticeably
    • Start a new User-Account and log into this and iMovie get's faster too - if a project is in a hurry
    • And let Mac run on Mains - not just on battery

  • IMovie HD 6.0.3: After making 10 movies where I clipped portions from a larger clip (and exported the smaller clips), suddenly iMovie clips are much shorter after I export them.

    Hi there,
I am using iMovie HD 6.0.3 on an older MacBookPro (OS X, 10.4.11).
I took an AVI video and imported that into iMovie HD.
I then created smaller clips out of that - like editing a 20 minute video into small, 30 second clips.
I made about 10 of these smaller clips, exported them using "expert settings," and burned the results to DVD. These all worked fine.
Suddenly, the final product that I export is much shorter than the clip I created. For example, I'll create a 30 second smaller clip from the original. When I review this 30 second clip, it is what I wanted.
When I export this 30 second clip, it makes a QuickTime movie that is only 23 seconds. (The first 10 I made did not do this).
I tried extending my clip by 7 seconds, hoping to end up with a 30 second clip after exporting. The result was even shorter - like 15 seconds.
I have checked disk space - it has at least 500 GB free space. I have tried exporting the clip to both my laptop and to an external hard drive. The results are the same.
I just tried using the "crop" feature to see if my end product was better - but it was the same.
Does anyone know what is going on? Why did this start after making 10 successful exports? What can I do to get it working right again, as I have 3 more clips to make and am running up against a deadline.
    Thanks so much!
    Heidi

Since I can't edit this post... (Why?) I'd add: fast forwarding and fast reverse (shift key and arrow left or right) the HA files is also not smooth. They play alright. I'm surprised iMovie can't handle them either. I didn't have a problem with the earlier camcorder's HA files... (All were converted MTS files using Movie Converter.)

  • How does one clean out the trash, after putting in a time line file in?

After cleaning out some old files, it was late one night that I put a old file from the Time Line into the trash.  Now how can this be FIXED?

Time Line...? If you mean Time Machine, then you should only delete old backups and files using the Time Machine interface.
If you did a NO NO and moved old Time Machine backups to the Trash using Finder? Then go to > Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions 12 and scroll down to the section in gray for the solution.

If you want to give your wife a "clean" computer, the best way to do it is create a new account for her then delete your old account and home folder. This will leave all the applications and system files intact. Of course be sure to backup your files first.
If you just want to keep your account and remove some of the clutter, you can check out the web site below. It lists some easy ways to reclaim disk space. The page is a little dated but most of it is still applicable. You can also use one of the many disk cleanup utilities. I have used CClean (available for free in the Mac App Store) for this purpose.

  • How do I clean up undesired music after publishing a video film?

I am frequently editing videos in iMovie09 after which they are processed in the Media Browser and put on DVD. No problems whatsoever.
My latest project is a 60 min. video that I made some years ago using iMovie-4, from old 8mm films. I had the video on tape, and imported it without difficulties as a new event into iMovie09. I've edited the video quite extensively, improving film speed, colors, frame size, sound effects. One of the things I did, was to reduce the original background music to zero, and add a total number of 18 new sound tracks from iTunes.
The resulting video project runs flawlessly.
Processing the project in the Media Browser (720x540), took rather long (plm 6 hours).
In the resulting picture there is a double sound; in addition to the normal background music, I hear sound tracks from other parts of the film at the same time.
I've tried to delete and re-install iMovie09, but this did not help.
Can someone come up with suggestions??

When making speed changes to your video (such as slow motion) you must use only the presets shown on the speed slider. Using custom settings - that is, manually entering percentages - may cause audio glitches in your project. These glitches will not be evident in preview, only in the exported movie.
The presets are 12.5%, 25%, 50%, 100%, 200%, 400% and 800%. Don't use any other percentages! This is a well known bug in iMovie '09 which will hopefully be fixed in a future upgrade.

Anyone spilt coffee over their macbook ?Mine won't work properly now.....on go slow and keys not working?Help?

Turn off your computer.  Using it after liquid damage can further damage its components.
Get your computer into a bin of rice.  Rice is great at absorbing moisture.
Contact your closest Apple Authorized Service Provider to see if they can help repair accidental damage.  Apple Retail Stores generally don't repair accidental damage.

  • How can I regain control of .bash_profile after making changes to $PATH?

    Hi,
Today, I installed Android ADB on my MBP (late 2013) and used the following guide to get it started: http://www.droidviews.com/a-comprehensive-guide-to-adb-android-debug-bridge-and- commands/ - that guide said I should make a change to ~/bash_profile in order to get the settings right. Here's what I did (copied from the link):
Open terminal window and type following: nano ~/.bash_profile
This shall open the .bash_profile file. Now enter the following line to define ADB path. export PATH=${PATH}:~/android-sdk-macosx/tools export PATH=${PATH}:~/android-sdk-macosx/platform-tools
Then, I saved and closed the terminal window.
Now, I cannot use a lot of terminal commands anymore - sudo, latex, rm, all only give me:
    -bash: latex: command not found
If I try to access ~/.bash_profile, I get the following error:
    -bash: /Users/richard/.bash_profile: Permission denied
    I tried this:
    RMBP:~ richard$ echo $PATH
    {PATH}:/Users/richard/android-sdk-macosx/platform-tools
which only shows me that I have changed the path.
Is there any way I can regain access to the .bash_profile file and control over the Terminal in general?
Any help would be highly appreciated, thanks in advance!

I solved the problem, it seems, by doing the following:
I found the defective .bash_profile file by using Omni Disk Sweeper, and deleted it right away. Someone else here in the support forum had a similar problem and solved it this way, so that's how I got the idea. The Terminal works nicely now and no other signs of trouble have come up yet.

Are you working in iMovie and realize that certain frames in the movie would be perfect as photographs? Here is how to extract them...
*To get a still frame from an Event*, right-click on the frame and select "Add Still Frame to Project". The still will be added to the end of the current project. Right click on the still frame in the project and select "Reveal in Finder". You will see a jpeg file that is highlighted. Drag this jpeg file in the finder to the iPhoto icon on your dock.
*If you want a still from a project*, rather than an event, the process is similar, except you right-click on the frame and select "Add Freeze Frame", and it adds the freeze frame at the end of the clip rather than at the end of the project. Right-click/reveal in Finder, drag JPEG to iPhoto icon in dock.
*If you are not using iPhoto*, and just want to save to your desktop, click Reveal in Finder as above, then COPY, then PASTE to desktop.
Hint: If you do not want to clutter up your iMovie Project with stills at the end that you would have to go back and delete, then create a separate iMovie Project just for your stills, and follow the instructions for capturing stills from an Event.
Note: If you do not have a right mouse button, then control-click will work instead of right-click.
