How do I clone an external disk using CCC?

I have a MacBook Air and because it has only 256 GB and I need about three times that space for storing movies, document files etc., I use an external hard disk to keep these files on.
I formatted this disk using Mac Extended Journal but I did not put the Snow Leopard Operating System on it. I just move files from the computer's hard drive to the disk as required.
I had a scare once where the data on another external hard disk was wiped out because of a faulty USB cord. All the movies were lost and I could not recover the data. The disk also failed to mount. This problem kept happening several times. When I got rid of the faulty USB cord, the external disk mounted and I never lost data again. I am certain all the problems were due to the faulty USB cord. I have been using the same external disk ever since and it has been working fine with the non-faulty USB cord so I am sure it didn't have anything to do with the disk and it was the USB cord that was the problem. I used the same faulty USB cord with other external disks and the same problems arose - failure to mount etc.
This is the background for why I want to make a copy of this external drive. I don't want to lose the movies and other data on this disk if something goes wrong again and want everything on another disk just in case.
I usually use Carbon Copy Cloner to make backups. But that is with a external disk that has OS 10.6.8 on it.
I really don't want to put OS 10.6.8 on the external drive where I store movies and other over-spill data on it.
How do I go about making a copy of this external disk using CCC (or using another program if CCC won't work for this)?
I have two USB ports on my MBA. I prefer to use CCC over SuperDuper because I had a problem with SuperDuper in the past.

So as I understand it, CCC will clone any disk to any disk so long as it's formatted to Mac (extended Journal) and I don't have to put the Mac operating system on the disks that I am copying from and copying to?
Thanks for answering.

  • How to read data from PC format external disk, using Labview MAC

    Hi folks,
For years I have not been able to read data files from a PC formatted (created) external disk, using Labview for Mac. More specifically:
     - I have Labview 7.01 running on OS X 10.4.11 on a PowerBook G4
     - I have a 500GB external USB/firewire disk that was formatted on a PC and has data files (custom format) that were created on the PC. I believe that C code actually creates the files, but Labview 7/PC opens the files and appends some info (I don't think the fact that C or Labview touches the files is actually relevant to this issue though).
     - I can connect the 500 GB disk to my mac, and it will mount just fine and OS X can see all of the data files (and anything else on the disk).
     - if I use my Labview app to open and read a data file it fails:
           - open/create/replace.vi (with read-only access) shows a file dialog window that lets me navigate to any file on the external disk.
           - but, the vi returns an error 7
     - if I use OS X to copy the data file to my Mac disk, my Labview app works fine.
    So, does anyone know if:
     - I'm just doing something wrong in my Mac Labview app?
     - Labview 7.x solves this problem?
     - Labview 8/Mac solves this problem?
     - OS X 10.5 solves this problem; with Labview 7 or 8; or does OS X 10.5 worsen the problem?
    Thanks, in advance...

    Hi kehander,
Thanks for the reply. I tried filling a constant path with the Mac-defined path to a data file on the USB disk (ie "DATA2:file1.dat"). This resulted in the same error message.
I then considered that maybe I was misinterpreting the LV error message, and that perhaps I was supposed to address the file using PC-notation (ie. "DATA2\file1.dat"), even though the app is running on a Mac. No joy with this, but I get a different error msg:
"Error 1430 occurred at Open File
    Possible reason(s):
LabVIEW:  The path is empty or relative. You must use an absolute path."
Can you share what your reasoning was for your suggestion... I'm not sure I understand why a constant path would produce different results?

I am using a macbook pro with system 10.6.8. I just discovered that no recent files have been backed up to the external disk using Time Capsule.  There is a long list of backups including most recent but no recent files, for some weeks, have been backed up.  I did a full reset of Time Machine.  I disconnected the external drive and reconnected it. It is not a matter of file types, no files and no folders have gotten backed up.  Everything looks normal though unless one goes hunting for recent files on the back up.

    Many thanks.
With those symptoms, I'd try the following document:

  • How do i clone iMac to my used macbook pro

using fire wire to my macbk pro how do i clone it from my imac so it is identical everything, dah thus clone

Since no one has answered, I’ll jump in.
I don’t know how to do this with FireWire but I can say how to migrate the data with a disk.  When you are done this disk can be used as a backup disk for the MBP so it is not a wasted item.
From your signature I infer the iMac is currently running Mavericks and the MBP is running Lion and you want to upgrade the MBP to Mavericks as part of this process, copying over all the data, preferences, etc.
That is best done with a clean install on the MBP transferring the data either over FireWire or a cloned disk.  I can speak to the disk method.
    First, prepare the clone.
Use Disk Utility to format the disk Mac OS Extended (journaled) with a GUID partition.
If you need help see the instructions below.
Then you can purchase some cloning software  (which you can continue to use for a good backup method) or you can use Disk Utility to create the clone.  The software to purchase would be either Carbon Copy Cloner or Super Duper!  I’ll give the instructions for using Disk Utility here in case you do not want to purchase those.
    Formatting the external drive:
    On the iMac:
    Finder > Go > Utilities.
    > Disk Utility.
Plug the external disk into the iMac.
    Select that disk’s volume name.
    > Partition
    Partition Layout > 1 Partition
    Name > Clone1
    Format: Mac OS Extended (journaled)
    > Options > GUID Partition Table > OK
    > Apply
Cloning onto the external drive with Disk Utility:
    In the iMac:
    > Disk Utility
    > Restore
Drag the System Volume (often called Macintosh HD) into the Source: window.
Drag the external volume (Clone1) into the Destination: window.
    > Restore
    Wait until it finishes.
    Clean Install:
    On the MBP:
    Boot the recovery partition.   http://www.apple.com/osx/recovery/
    > Disk Utility.
    > Erase.
    Format: Mac OS Extended (journaled)
    Name: Macintosh HD
If it is an SSD do not write zeros to the SSD.  Just skip to Erase…
    If it is a disk:
    > Security Options…
Select “Writes a single pass of zeroes over the entire disk”.
    > OK
    > Erase…
    Wait until it finishes.
This will write to every block and map out bad blocks.
    Install Mavericks on Macintosh HD.
    Reboot from Macintosh HD.
    Plug in Clone1.
When the installation instructions as from where you want to restore files, tell it from a disk and indicate Clone1.
Wait a while and you will have a freshly installed Mavericks system with all the data from the iMac.

  • How do you clone the install disk?

i was reading in another post about installing the OS over a network and the solution given was to install to an Ext. Firewire drive and clone the installed OS to the firewire drive then clone it again onto the target mac.
this solution may not work well for me, but i too was considering a family user license to update as many of my macs as i can. However, i want to wait until the next version of the OS is available. (i see no point in buying an OS i already own on one computer for another $199, so i will wait).
the other thread offered up two solutions. one was to have a, if i understand it correctly, i network version of the OS (X server), and the other was as posted above.
so how do yo clone the OS (i assume it is the actual installed OS and not the installer. how much room is needed to do it?

yes, thank you i see that.
i don't know much about servers, but it kind of sounds like i would be running the OS from a server and not the individual macs. i don't think that will work for me either.
it sounds like i will need to by the multi-license then exchange the DVDs for CDs so i can install on the G4 DP 533.
i could use the clone method, but the mac isn't really a clone, they have their own identities in mutlti-user log in.

  • How to password-protected an external disk on yosemite?

I search for hours but with no results...
I'm searching for a simple and free application that will password protect my external disk I'm moving from one place to another one. There are a lot of free solutions for PC but I have a hard time finding a solution for Mac.
Encryption with disk utility is not a solution for me since my 10.6.8 computer would not recognize the disk.
    Moreover, I only want a simple password-protection.
I bought a WD elements and thought I could use Wd security but it looks like it only works with WD my passport (that contains this software) and that WD is preventing WD elements hard disks to be recognized by this application....
I searched the internet and it looks like there is no free solution. Or any free solution is not updated (not yosemite compatible).
Is there a free app ? Or do I have to buy a software (in that case which one would you recommend me)?
    Thanks for your advices.

Thank you Kappy but you didn't read all my post. I quote "Encryption with disk utility is not a solution for me since my 10.6.8 computer would not recognize the disk."

  • How do i clone this external boot drive to my MBP?

I have been testing Mavericks for some time, booting from an external drive.  The internal drive on my MBP is still running 10.6.8.
Now I want to clone the external to the internal, replacing the Snow Leopard setup with Mavericks.
In the Finder, my internal drive appears in the sidebar under ‘Devices’ - as does the external boot drive.  But clicking on the internal drive icon (bringing up the file hierarchy) shows the external boot drive in the adjacent column - ie as part of the internal drive.
As a result, when I launch Superduper to clone from the external to the internal, the internal does not appear as an option.
Can you see what’s wrong here, and advise on how can I achieve what I want to do?

I tried 3 re-starts - the first 2 made no difference to the situation, but the third at last brought up the option to clone to the internal drive.  The clone is now completed, and all appears to be working OK.

  • How can I unlock an external disk?

I have two external disks, one connected to my Intel iMac via usb and the other firewire. Since upgrading to 10.6.7 and trying (unsuccessfully so far) to recover files from the back-up disk, I can no longer access them. I get the message " ...you don't have permission to see its contents". Access privileges have been changed to Custom, and it won't let me change this. In Disk Utility the drives are listed but 'Verify / Repair Permissions' buttons are greyed out. The disk icons have a small padlock attached to them. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks. Garry

Have you tried to fix the permissions from the Terminal?
If you open a Terminal Window
         Applications > Utilities > Terminal
assuming that your problematic disk is mounted
    and type
    ls -l /Volumes
you should see a listing of your disks, the permissions and the owner.
    [Eliza:~] dreschle% ls -l /Volumes/
    total 16
    lrwxr-xr-x   1 root      admin     1 15 Jul 06:03 Eliza_HD -> /
    drwxrwxr-x@ 20 root      admin   748 13 Jul 15:56 Eliza_Media
    drwxrwxrwx  11 dreschle  staff   442 10 Jul 17:30 HDDElizaBackup
    drwxrwxr-x  49 dreschle  staff  1734 10 Jul 17:30 HDDMediaPartition
    drwx------@ 18 dreschle  staff   680 15 Jul 08:56 Tresor
    drwx------  18 dreschle  staff   986 11 Jul 18:15 dreschler
    lrwxr-xr-x   1 dreschle  admin    18 15 Jul 06:13 iDisk -> /Volumes/dreschler
for all disks, where you are the owner (your user name or admin), the protections should be "drwxrwxr-x" , which means that the system and you have read/write/execute access, everybody else only read/execute.
If you don't see read/write/execute permission to your disk, or are not even the owner
    try
    sudo chmod a+rwx /Volumes/theNameOfYourDisk
This will give read/write/access to everybody, so be sure to set it back with "repair permissions", after you have access your disk.
If you are even not the owner of the disk try to fix that with the "chown" command.
    see:
    man chown

  • How to install SysX.5.1(PPC) on external disk using MacPro SysX.5.6(Intel)

I need to install the SysX 5.1 for a PPC Mac on an external disc to make it a start up disk but I need to use my MacPro to do the install. The MacPro gags on the PPC Sys install disk.
    best, nrb

    Nick,
Unfortunately you cannot boot your Mac Pro from a Leopard installer disc and then install Leopard on a PPC Mac. So your best option would be to put the installer onto an external hard drive volume.
If you have an external hard drive you don't mind erasing, then here's what you can do:
    Extended Hard Drive Preparation
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to APM (for PPC Macs) then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
Next you will clone the installer DVD to the hard drive:
    1. Select the external hard drive volume from the left side list.
    2. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
    3. Select the external hard drive volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
    4. Select the Mac OS X Installer DVD volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
    5. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
It should take around 15-30 minutes for the cloning process to complete. Now quit DU. Eject the external drive and connect it to your G5. Restart the G5 and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the icon for the external hard drive then click on the large right arrow button. The computer should boot from the external drive directly into the OS X Installer. At this point after the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. As soon as the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Now you can attempt to repair the G5's internal hard drive or if necessary erase the internal drive and reinstall OS X.
I think this is what you want to do assuming the G5 does not have a functioning optical drive and you do not have access to another PPC Mac or an external FireWire optical drive. Hope this helps.

  • How do I make a data disk using Disk Utility (Panther 10.3.9)

I am trying to back up some of my data to disks, so I can upgrade my OS to Leopard. I have done this in the past but either forgot how or it isn't working right (some things are not working right on my computer at present..?? my Final Cut Pro won't open, that's why I decided to upgrade) Could you please tell me how it is supposed to work. I think I have made a disk image okay but when I highlight it in disk utility and hit burn it says invalid argument?? If I install Leopard will I loose all my files?

Not necessarily, but you should never do a major upgrade without having a bootable backup of your system. In fact you should never be without backups:
    Basic Backup
Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
    1. Retrospect Desktop (Commercial - not yet universal binary)
    2. Synchronize! Pro X (Commercial)
    3. Synk (Backup, Standard, or Pro)
    4. Deja Vu (Shareware)
    5. PsynchX 2.1.1 and RsyncX 2.1 (Freeware)
    6. Carbon Copy Cloner (Freeware - 3.0 is a Universal Binary)
    7. SuperDuper! (Commercial)
    8. Intego Personal Backup (Commercial)
    9. Data Backup (Commercial)
The following utilities can also be used for backup, but cannot create bootable clones:
    1. Backup (requires a .Mac account with Apple both to get the software and to use it.)
    2. Toast
    3. Impression
    4. arRSync
Apple's Backup is a full backup tool capable of also backing up across multiple media such as CD/DVD. However, it cannot create bootable backups. It is primarily an "archiving" utility as are the other two.
Impression and Toast are disk image based backups, only. Particularly useful if you need to backup to CD/DVD across multiple media.
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQs on maintenance, optimization, virus protection, and backup and restore. Also read How to Back Up and Restore Your Files.
Although you can buy a complete FireWire drive system, you can also put one together if you are so inclined. It's relatively easy and only requires a Phillips head screwdriver (typically.) You can purchase hard drives separately. This gives you an opportunity to shop for the best prices on a hard drive of your choice. Reliable brands include Seagate, Hitachi, Western Digital, Toshiba, and Fujitsu. You can find reviews and benchmarks on many drives at Storage Review.
    Enclosures for FireWire and USB are readily available. You can find only FireWire enclosures, only USB enclosures, and enclosures that feature multiple ports. I would stress getting enclosures that use the Oxford chipsets (911, 921, 922, for example.) You can find enclosures at places such as;
    Cool Drives
    OWC
    WiebeTech
    Firewire Direct
    California Drives
    NewEgg
All you need do is remove a case cover, mount the hard drive in the enclosure and connect the cables, then re-attach the case cover. Usually the only tool required is a small or medium Phillips screwdriver.
Upgrading does not have to be difficult unless you choose to make it so. You have three installation options. I would recommend an Archive and Install option when feasible:
How to Perform an Archive and Install
    1. Be sure to use Disk Utility first to repair the disk before performing the Archive and Install.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.5.2 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Do not proceed with an Archive and Install if DU reports errors it cannot fix. In that case use Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro to repair the hard drive. If neither can repair the drive, then you will have to erase the drive and reinstall from scratch.
    3. Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When you reach the screen to select a destination drive click once on the destination drive then click on the Option button. Select the Archive and Install option. You have an option to preserve users and network preferences. Only select this option if you are sure you have no corrupted files in your user accounts. Otherwise leave this option unchecked. Click on the OK button and continue with the OS X Installation.
    4. Upon completion of the Archive and Install you will have a Previous System Folder in the root directory. You should retain the PSF until you are sure you do not need to manually transfer any items from the PSF to your newly installed system.
    5. After moving any items you want to keep from the PSF you should delete it. You can back it up if you prefer, but you must delete it from the hard drive.
    6. You can now download a Combo Updater directly from Apple's download site to update your new system to the desired version as well as install any security or other updates. You can also do this using Software Update.

  • Complete Clone of External Disk?

    Hi,
I have 2 iMacs, one PPC and one intel both running leopard. The PPC iMac is about to die, and will not switch on (cannot get past the grey screen with the apple logo). I've connected the 2 computers together via firewire and used the dying iMac as a Firewire disk to access the data stored on it. How can I make a complete clone of the dying iMac so I don't lose all the files on it? I could just drag all the files to my intel imac, but that would not copy some hidden files and settings right?
If I use something like SuperDuper! or Carbon Copy cloner, that would not work right?, as it has to completely erase the target volume before it can make a copy. HELP!
    Please help.
    Thanks in advance
