How Do I Clone an Old iPod to a New One?

I'm about to get an iPod 5th gen replacement from the Apple Store since my drive is going bad, but not dead yet. How can I wipe this one clean then when I get my new one (also a 5th gen) be sure that everything is set up just as it is on the old one, ie. Playlist, Podcasts, applications, movies, and everything else? If I name the new iPod the same as the last will it sync everything automatically the way it was on the old one?
Or do I have to hand select everything, in iTunes, all over again?
I want this as pain free as possible? What can I do now to have it be so?
Thanks

I don't think the name matters. If you are currently syncing with iTunes, everything is already in the iTunes library. All you have to do is connect the new iPod and tell it to sync with the same settings as your current iPod. There's plenty of space on the iPod Classic, so it is easiest to sync everything, or at least everything that is music. You can be selective with podcasts and videos.

Transfer non-iTunes purcased music from the iPod to the computer by using a hird-party program like one of those discused here:

    Transfer iTunes purchased by:
iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod to a computer
You do have to know the accout(s) ID and password.

You can't without putting it on iTunes first, which is done by using the Transfer Purchases command in the File menu.

  • How can I clone my old macbook to my new Macbook Pro 768GB SSD

    Hi,
I have a 2 year old macbook and have just received my new Macbook Pro Retina dispaly with a 768gb SSD.
How can I clone my old drive to my new Macbook as the unit is sealed so I cant ge the drive out.
    thanks.

Bootable clones can only be used with the same model machine as there are machine specific hardware drivers involved that are different between different models of Mac's.
Probally the fastest way would be to clone the old Mac boot drive to a external drive using Carbon Copy Cloner, then connecting it to the new Mac and booting the new Mac (first time) into Setup Assistant and then use that to "migrate" accounts and programs over. Takes a few hours.
Transfering via Wifi does take FOREVER. like several days in some cases.
If you have the new Mac already setup, then use Migration Assitant in the Utilities folder.
However Setup Assistant and Migrations are not perfect and tend to fail badly if you had problems on the older Mac, sometimes these problems are unseen and only until you try to use the new Mac afterwards do they appear.
You might want to opt instead of installing the same name account on the new Mac, installing 10.8 compatible programs from original sources and then use the external clone of the old Mac drive to transfer just user files manually into the same Pcitures, Movies, Documents etc., folders.
Since you have a SSD, you can load programs later, it's hard drives that you want to install programs before user data to run them faster.
Get a cleaner machine doing it manaully that way and you know there is nothing nsaty hidden, like what Setup Assistant and Migrations often transfer.

How do I get playlists off of my old ipod to my new one?

    Hello yogawithlezie,
Thank you for contacting Apple Support Communities.
You will need to first move your music from your iPod to your computer and then sync to the new iPod.

  • HT1209 how to transfer music from old iPod nano to new iPod touch

how to transfer music from old iPod nano to new iPod touch ?

The 1st and 2nd gen iPod shuffle can only be used with one iTunes library (not "account") at a time.  Your Apple ID and password does not matter.  (Later shuffles can be used with more than one iTunes library, IF it is set to use the Manually manage music option.)
So, if you sync it with a different iTunes library, the previous content will be replaced.  You need to offload the existing content to your new computer's drive as the first step.
You cannot transfer song files from iPod to computer using iTunes, except for songs purchased from the iTunes Store.  However, there are third-party methods and utilities that can transfer from iPod to computer.  If you do an Internet search on something like "ipod transfer," you should get some links.  (The CNET article seems to be popular.)
Once the song files are on your computer's drive, you can add them to the iTunes library.  After confirming all of your songs are there, sync your shuffle with that iTunes library.

  • How do you transfer game data from an old Ipod to a new one?

I am trying to transfer apps from an old Ipod to a new one.  World War and Call of Mini: Double Shot will not transfer the game data.  Any suggestions? I have backed up and restored via Icloud with no success.

Well I don't think either game supports iCloud game data save. If they do it will be in the game settings. Best of luck. Cheers.

    Hi mshields1162,
Great question, and welcome to Apple Support Communities.
First, you may want to choose to have the sidebar displayed for familiarity:
    iTunes 11: Frequently used features
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5649
Afterwards, your device should be displayed if connected:
We'll want to click on it, and choose the Music tab at the top. Let's make sure "Sync Music" is checked:
Afterwards, you'll have the option to sync either the entire music library (for your first iPod), or "Selected playlists, artists, albums, and genres" (for the secondary device). Upon selecting this option, four larger option boxes will appear allowing you to pick and choose what content will be synced. For audiobooks, you may need to do the above in the "Books" section. For a visual instruction on how to do this, see the following:
iTunes 10: Sync to your iPod

    Thanks,

  • Is there a way to get my songs from my old ipod to my new one?

i was just wondering if there is a way to get my songs from my old ipod nano to my new ipod nano because some of the songs i have are not in my itunes... so if there is a way to get my songs from my old ipod to my new one can someone tell me how please

You can't copy directly from one iPod to another. If the songs on the old one aren't in iTunes you need to copy them back and update the new one from there. If you have any iTunes Music Store purchases the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. You'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod or iPhone to a computer
The transfer of content from sources such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. Have a look at the web pages and documentation, this is just a small selection of what's available, they are generally quite straightforward. You can read reviews and comparisons of some of them here:
Wired News - Rescue Your Stranded Tunes
    Comparison of iPod managers
TuneJack Windows Only (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
    iPod2PC Windows Only
    iDump Windows Only
    SharePod Windows Only
    iPodRip Mac & Windows
    YamiPod Mac and Windows
    Music Rescue Mac & Windows
    Floola Mac & Windows
iGadget Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iRepo Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iPod Access Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
TouchCopy Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible - Windows version only)
There's also a manual method of copying songs from your iPod to a Mac or PC. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available on page 2 at this link: Copying Content from your iPod to your Computer - The Definitive Guide
Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up, relying on an iPod as your sole backup is not a good idea and external drives are comparatively inexpensive these days, you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay.

I would like to buy a new ipod touch; how do I transfer my smurf village from my old ipod to my new one?

Yes.  Just make one final sync (it includes a backup) of the old iPod,  Then connect the new iPod to that syncing computer and restore the iPOd from that backup.  Also see:

    Hello everybody,
I would like to copy all the songs from one Ipod into another. All the songs are into my Itunes account, I tried to drag and drop the songs from the old Ipod to the new one but it doesn't work. Is there a way to do it ?
I share one Itunes account with other people from my family and one person would like to keep the same songs on the new Ipod as the ones which were on the old one.
Thanks in advance for your answer.
    Yan

    Hello Chris,
Thanks for your answer. I was hoping for an easier answer. Too bad there is no drag and drop solution, it would have been much easier.
    Thanks for answering so fast.
    Bye.
