How do I close applications on the dock?

Hello. I am a new Mac user and loving it so far. I was just wondering, how do I close the applications with the blue light underneath them on the Dock? For example, I want to close Microsoft word, so the blue light is not underneath it anymore.

  • How to get more applications in the dock folder??

Hello! I Have a MacBook Pro and an iMac. On my iMac, all the apps are in the folder on the dock but on my MBP It only has a few and I don't know how to add apps to it. Why is this?? I tried dragging apps to the folder but they don't go in.
    Any thoughts, anyone??

If you want the entire Applications folder on the Dock you can do so.  I would remove what you have there now and start over.  Go to Finder>Macintosh HD>Applications
from here you can drag the entire folder to the right side of the Dock.  Right (control) click to customize viewing options.

  • I can't add some applications to the dock.

I have tried adding applications to the dock by dragging the applications (i.e. iMovie, iCal, iWeb) from my applications folder to the dock, but the applications won't stay in the dock. The application icon will remain in the dock for a few seconds, but then shrink away. I have also tried opening the applications and right clicking the application icon in the dock and selecting "Keep in Dock", but when I close the application, the icon won't stay in the dock. How can I correct this situation?
Additional info: I have a MacBook Pro, iMac and iPhone. I use MobileMe to sync.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions
    1. Set MobileMe sync to 'manual' in MobileMe preferences.
    2. Unregister all computers but the one having issue.
    3. MOVE ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.dock.plist to your desktop
    4. Repair Permissions
    5. RUN 'killall Dock' in Terminal
    6. Try adding the icon to dock to see if it stays put.

  • Opening mail application from the dock sometimes doesn't open window.

In Mountain Lion, sometimes when I open Mail on the dock with a single left mouse (or touchpad) click, the Mail application opens, as shown in the menu bar, but a mail window doesn't open. I must then click or double click on it to get it to open a window. No other application in the dock behaves this way. How can I fix this?

Is there a problem with mail opening from the dock?
NOPE!  Do you have open at login enabled?  Is Mail listed in Login Items through System Preferences?
My iMac is automatically up to date with all updates as at 09/01/2014.i

This could be a plist corruption problem, but I'm not sure.
Sometimes, the preference list files get corrupted. You can usually just remove them and they'll get re-created. This may require you to reset certain settings. A notable exception to this is the Mail plist which actually stores the Library structure of your email accounts. Deleting the Mail plist will definitely cause lots of problems, but is recoverable.
The plist files are stored in the /Users/username/Library/Preferences/ folder. They usually have the naming convention of com.company.programname.plist.
A simple troubleshooting technique is to move a suspect plist file out of the Preferences folder and start up the app, again. It will re-create the plist from scratch.
In your case, I would try the com.apple.dock.plist. You can use Activity Monitor to kill the Dock app and it will restart. Or, you can log out and log back in.
There is a new file with Leopard called com.apple.dock.db. I haven't figured out what it does, but you might try moving it out. If anything gets worse, you can move the old file back in replacing the newly created one.
This all sound somewhat odd, so I don't know if this will help.

  • Icons keep leaving my dock.  I put them back and they leave again.  How can I keep them on the dock?

icons keep leaving my dock.  I put them back, and they leave again.  How do I keep them on the dock?

Did you request that they be left in the Dock?  To do this you activate the application and its icon will be in the Dock, click and hold on it, a pop-up menu will show near the icon and in it will be a menu with "Option" in it. Click on "Option" and you will find an item that will say "Keep In Dock", click on it and the icon will stay in the Dock. If you have done all this and the icon still goes away someone else will have to help you.

  • Help with restoring mail application on the dock

I accidentally threw the mail application in the trash and permanently deleted it. How do I restore this? I have already downloaded the update for OSX 10.4.4.
If anyone can tell me how to fix this it would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!

Do you mean the application or the dock icon? The dock icon is just a shortcut and mail should still be in your applications folder, if that's what you trashed. Just launch it by double clicking, then click the icon and choose Keep in Dock from the menu.

  • Issue with switching spaces via clicking application in the dock

    Hey guys,
Sometimes, not all the time, when I click on an application in the dock that has windows open in another space, it switches to the appropriate space, but with the application I clicked on not in the foreground. If I have other application windows open in that space, sometimes they occupy the foreground, and subsequently, the application I have clicked on on the dock is not in view. It is highly annoying when I click on the dock icon, to find that I have to go down and click on the dock icon a second time to bring the app into view. Does this happen to anyone else?
    Cheers guys,
    Ric.

    Thanks KXsig.
I've been upgrading from 10.5.8 to 10.6.4 last sunday. Since then, switching between different Spaces with Magic Mouse, i've got that issue of a third party application dedicated to Spaces number 6, and appearing also in background of Spaces 4 dedicated to Safari, or also in any free Spaces spot, when the application dedicated is not opened.
That didn't happened with Leopard, thanks a lot for the keyboard shortcut "Command + Tab".
Maybe a fix in 10.6.5 to come..

To close out apps, simply double click the home button and instead of holding down the app icons and clicking on the X mark in older versions, you have to swipe the app window up and away.
Also you can save on battery by turning of background app refresh from settings, as explained in this article .... http://nyacomputing.com/how-to-close-apps-in-ios-7-and-save-on-battery/
