How do I completely turn off font smoothing on my MacBook pro?

I am at a loss. I've seen dozens of people complain about this, but I'm still hoping there's a solution: How do I turn off font smoothing on my MacBook pro? I've toggled the anti-aliasing options every which way, and no matter what I do, the text is always slightly blurry (there's always a slight halo of grey around the characters to smooth them out). This would be the perfect computer if I could just turn that dang feature off completely, but as it is it's so hard on my eyes I can't use it for reading or writing for any extended period.

DigiLloyd posted some aditional info on this subject, here:
"Apple abandoned useful font smoothing user interface support in Mac OS X Leopard for a “moron setting” in Mac OS X Snow Leopard, leaving those with non-Apple displays high and dry with unattractive text display.
You’ll need to use Terminal to set things right (or at least better, which is not to say optimal)."

  • How do I completely turn off iPhone backups to my Mac?

How do I completely turn off iPhone backups to my Mac?  I have an MBP with a 250 GB SSD running Mountain Lion that I use primarly for work and I'm getting low on disk space.  I'm having a clear out and I noticed that my iPhone and iPad back ups use about 20 gigs which is too much. Neither carries important data and my phone photos are already covered by iPhoto auto backing up to a remote library. I don't want to pay for an iCoud account. Any ideas?

You need to sync your iPhone contacts with the Address Book on your Mac, which is as designed and intended.
Before the first sync for this data, enter one contact in the Address Book on your Mac. Make this contact up if needed, which can be deleted later. This will provide a merge prompt with the first sync for this data, which you want to select.
Syncing contacts with the Address Book is selected under the Info tab for your iPhone sync preferences with iTunes.
The same applies before syncing calendar events with iCal if you aren't using iCal on your Mac for calendar events.

how do i turn off the startup sound on macbook pro?

You don't. You may find some third-party software that will, however. Try Auto Mute.
    Alternatively, you can try this:
I think this is the best and simplest solution. Open a Terminal window and type (or copy/paste) the following to turn down the startup noise:
         sudo nvram SystemAudioVolume="%00"
    Press RETURN.
And to restore it to the original value type:
         sudo nvram -d SystemAudioVolume
    Press RETURN.
    That's all folks.

  • How do I completely turn off the backlit keyboard without using F5 and F6?

I believe my keyboard short circuited after a spill this weekend. I'm currently using a usb keyboard from Apple. I have disabled the keyboard, on my laptop, now I want to completely turn off the backlight. I've looked in the settings and can't seem to find anything. Thanks.

    hi mtbomb,
hi Can you while the Power LED is blinking hold the power down don't let it go until the light disappeared.
Technically the Yoga13 should turn off while holding down the power. at least 10 to 15 sec.
I would suggest calling Technical Support if the above steps did not resolve the issue.
It's possible that when you turn on the system, it is not going to sleep but the blinking indicates failure.
    Best regards

  • Turn off font smoothing

I love thin clear fonts when they are not smoothed. Please FIND A WAY to turn font smoothing off.
I turn it off from windows 7 also. I don't know why are you so in love with the ugly font smoothing, which makes the fonts appear bloated and fuzzy.
PLEASE APPLE MAKE IT TURN OFF!

Thanks, I appreciate it, but I know that.
And it doesn't work. It doesn't deactivate it from menu, from XCode pop-up menus, that option is completely useless.
I think Mac fails miserably with fonts, and it just ruins an otherwise good OS.
It doesn't look as bad on retina displays, but that's only because you have twice as many pixels to work with.
And still it bloats the fonts unnecessarily.
    It's just ugly.
I was so mad with fonts, I wanted to write my own kerner driver just to turn smoothing off.
It's just horrible, and for a company that takes pride in being the first to bring truetype fonts and graphic user interface, having tasteless fonts is just bad.
Windows also tried to follow you, they added an ugly Segoe font and some other font to their Outlook. Luckily I can redirect them into Arial or Verdana through registry. With Mac it's really built into their OS. This ugly Lucida Grande... What's so nice about this font?
I may sound like I am trashing or ranting, but I speak this way in hopes that somebody notices and makes a normal update to the otherwise normal OS. Their font is just ugly. It looks ugly. There is nothing nice about the way Mac makes fonts smoothing. It would be much better off if it could have been turned off.
Just because the developers of Mac OS is used to seing their font uglyfied by smoothing, and sees no harm in it, doesn't mean everybody shares their preferences. I am a developer too, and I also produce software for sale, It's the user who they should listen, they will be surprised to learn how wrong they are...

  • Please allow ability to globally turn off font smoothing!

    Apple,
I sit in front of Windows PC's for 8 hours a day as an engineer. I grew up on macs, and I have a 17" Macbook Pro High Def at home. I have really tried to get used to the font smoothing settings (i've tried all of them) but I still prefer the non anti-aliased look (ie off).
I've tried to find a way to globally disable this in OSX but I can't. The only thing that I have found is the following command in the terminal application:
    defaults write -g AppleAntiAliasingThreshold 128
This works for 90% of the stuff I work in. Most Safari pages are not anti-aliased after I do this step and they look great. There are still a few pages that use anti-aliased fonts (apple.com) but I can live with it.
Apple, please provide a way to disable anti-aliasing system wide, and for an option to change the fonts to something other than Lucinda Grande.
    thanks,
    Jeff

  • How can I turn off my password on my MacBook Pro?

I (somehow) created a password whenever my MacBook Pro is either turned on or awaken from sleep mode because I was having issues with my roommates. They have since moved out, and I cannot remember how I created the password, or how to turn it off completely. I went into System Preferences>Security & Privacy, but don't see any option of turning it off completely, just changing the time it goes to sleep and asks for a password to turn back on.
    Thank you.

Yes you can shutdown as many times per day as you like
Yes you can use it plugged in even if the battery shows 100%, as per Apple guide on batteries here: http://www.apple.com/batteries/notebooks.html
They recommend you use the battery and allow it to drain to below 40% of capacity atleast once a month to in their words 'keep the juices flowing' and for longterm storage where you won't be using the device, they recommend you unplug it and let it drain to about 50% before shutting it down and not using it for a long period of time ie: 6 months

I was using Facetime and quit it, but the isight camera on my computer is still on. I've tried reopening and quitting photobooth and facetime, but it's still on. Can anyone give me any advice on how to turn it off? Thanks!

    Restart your Mac.
Actually Quit the Facetime App. Just closing the window might not actually close the program.

  • How to completely turn off Bluetooth and Wireless

    Hey everybody,
I'm running Windows XP SP3 via Boot Camp and I was wondering if anyone can assist me in how to completely turn off Bluetooth and Wireless connectivity so that I can reserve as much batter life while being in class taking notes without a plug-in source, but not uninstall. I know there is a Bluetooth control panel and I disabled it there but under "connect to" its still remains there. Basically I want to have the Bluetooth and Wireless turned off completely when I startup and still have the icons shown in the taskbar to let me know that they are still there.
    Thanks!

Joergen Thomson, I can see that you have the same thoughts like I do, I wish they could release a software that is stable and better then this.
I dont have the energi or time to report all flaus back to cisco, this product have taking to much of my time and frustration already. Thank you so much for all the time you spend to try get this product stable and hopefully a good product.
I have a costumer that have a webservice that is IP restricted, For now I have to define more then 93 policys openening for the same service because this doesnt handle address list and groups. And all the times I had to set it back to factory default becasue of HTTP Admin server stopped, VPN Problem, Firmware Upgrades, "Packet Loss" and so on takes alot of time becasue I need to reconfig policies back.
For now to they release a firmware is stable I have take this piece off the network and put the back a old Fortinet 60 box.

  • How to "In Effect" Turn Off Time Zone on iCal AND main computer

I am hopeful that this will help those of us who don't want to have any form of Time Zone on our computers or iCal. I read some of the other posts and see that it does not appear an option to completely turn off all Time Zones on the computer and iCal.
What I am thinking about doing, is trying to "Trick" my computer & ical into thinking it doesn't ever go anywhere and thus leaves all of my appointments where they are - no matter what time zone I am actually in.
I hope those of you more knowledgable can please help me see if this will work, or not?
I am hoping that by leaving Time Zone Support turned "Off" in iCal and leaving my computer at a 'manual' Mountain Time Zone (meaning I don't have it set to have it automatically set to the right time - I will set it manually), my appointments will stay put (not move around 8 hours when I go to Italy &/or back to the US)?
I can set the time "manually" to the correct time when I am in either US or Italy so my computer will reflect the current time, but still be set in Mountain Time Zone? Will the alarms still work on calendar events?
The only drawback I can see so far, is that all of the times on emails are messed up (i.e., off by 8 hours) when I am actually in Italy because I still do have the main computer time zone set as Mountain Time - US.
I am willing to live with this (I think?) if it leaves my appointment times alone.
Someone on a similar thread had wanted iCal to function like a paper planner - that is exactly what I am looking for as well! (it looked like that thread was a bit older, so that's why I posted this new question. It is my first on this type of forum, so forgive me if I am doing something wrong - and please advise! :~)
    PowerBook G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

I am being driven crazy by, what I suppose to be, the same issue. I have used the Time Zone Support feature to somewhat limited success.
I frequently travel between different time zones am confused on how to set up iCal to show the times of my events *in the place where they occur*. When I am in LA and I have a concert in Chicago later in the week, I don't need to know what time the Chicago concert is in LA.
Syncing my Treo 650 adds another problem. Publishing the calendars adds another as the published times are not listed in the time zone where the events occur but rather what time zone my laptop is in.
This seems simple to me, but I may be missing something. Here are my wishes:
    1. As I travel with my MacBook Pro that I can change my Date and Time preference to actually list the time zone where I am. Easily done...but...
    2. That the event times in iCal are unaffected by the changing of the Date and Time preference adjustment...(after all the concert in Chicago is still at 3pm on Friday, even if I am in Tokyo on Monday. I need to know the time of the Chicago concert in Chicago time, not Tokyo.)
    3. That calendars that I publish list the time in the place where the event occurs. I have students that need to know their lesson times but are consantly confused because the published times reflect whatever time zone I happen to be in...not where the lessons take place.
    4. That when I sync my Treo the event times automatically adjust to whichever time zome the treo picks up off the network time server. When I land in a new time zone, I need to know the the rehearsal starts at 10, in the city where I have just arrived.
I have recently switched to the Apple PIM apps from Entourage...where, if I never changed the time zone, everything was fine.
Sorry for the longish cry for help.
    Thanks
