How do I COMPLETELY uninstall Avast anti-virus (free edition) from my Mac?

How do we completely uninstall Avast anti-virus, latest edition from my Mac?  This product has really messed up my Safari browser with all the extensions and
possible plug-ins!
Thank you for any advice!

If you don't have an uninstaller:
Uninstalling Software: The Basics
Most OS X applications are completely self-contained "packages" that can be uninstalled by simply dragging the application to the Trash.  Applications may create preference files that are stored in the /Home/Library/Preferences/ folder.  Although they do nothing once you delete the associated application, they do take up some disk space.  If you want you can look for them in the above location and delete them, too.
Some applications may install an uninstaller program that can be used to remove the application.  In some cases the uninstaller may be part of the application's installer, and is invoked by clicking on a Customize button that will appear during the install process.
Some applications may install components in the /Home/Library/Applications Support/ folder.  You can also check there to see if the application has created a folder.  You can also delete the folder that's in the Applications Support folder.  Again, they don't do anything but take up disk space once the application is trashed.
Some applications may install a startupitem or a Log In item.  Startupitems are usually installed in the /Library/StartupItems/ folder and less often in the /Home/Library/StartupItems/ folder.  Log In Items are set in the Accounts preferences.  Open System Preferences, click on the Accounts icon, then click on the LogIn Items tab.  Locate the item in the list for the application you want to remove and click on the "-" button to delete it from the list.
Some software use startup daemons or agents that are a new feature of the OS.  Look for them in /Library/LaunchAgents/ and /Library/LaunchDaemons/ or in /Home/Library/LaunchAgents/.
If an application installs any other files the best way to track them down is to do a Finder search using the application name or the developer name as the search term.  Unfortunately Spotlight will not look in certain folders by default.  You can modify Spotlight's behavior or use a third-party search utility, EasyFind, instead.
Some applications install a receipt in the /Library/Receipts/ folder.  Usually with the same name as the program or the developer.  The item generally has a ".pkg" extension.  Be sure you also delete this item as some programs use it to determine if it's already installed.
There are many utilities that can uninstall applications.  Here is a selection:
    1. AppZapper
    2. AppDelete
    3. Automaton
    4. Hazel
    5. AppCleaner
    6. CleanApp

  • Anti-virus for Windows on my Mac Pro

I have recently purchased my Mac Pro and would like to install VMware Fusion in order to put Windows Vista on my system. (Have a lot of old PC storage I want to bring in.) What is a good anti-virus program for this type of installation?
    Thanks,
    3D Dad

I use Fusion to run Win XP Pro on my Mac Pro, as well. While I mostly use it to access my company's network using a set of company-supplied Windows utilities -- I'm satisfied with the overall result. For anti-virus protection, I use AVG Free Anti-Virus. Every time I run Fusion or Boot Camp, AVG Free AV checks for updates (too frequently, for my preferences); but it scans my system for viruses every time as well (a scan frequency that I really like). So, overall, it works well.
I don't tend to use my Win XP applications very much, so I try to only use freeware there. (But I had to buy SnagIt -- an excellent tool for capturing anything on your screen, including videos.) Otherwise, I have this bunch of freeware applications installed (and occasionally used):
    1. AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition
    2. AVG Anit-SpyWare Free Edition
    3. Mozilla Firefox
    4. Mozilla Thunderbird
    5. Apple Quicktime
    6. Apple iTunes
    7. Apple Bonjour for Windows
    8. Free Launchbar
    9. Irfan View
    10. VLC Media Player
    11. doPDF
    12. Anti-AdWare 2007
    13. FileZilla FTP client

A little late to the game, but .sit files are Stuffit files as developed by http://www.stuffit.com/ Apple used to use this compression format, but does no longer, and no longer includes the free Stuffit Expander program made by Stuffit.com. If you need to extract an old .sit uninstaller, get it from Stuffit.com. And also any company making such a program for Mac OS X should seriously consider upgrading their downloads to be .dmg.zip files instead, which are more easy to extract on Mac OS X without downloading extra software.

    Hi All,
i uninstalled AV successfully using as below mentioned links:
Moved to VirusScan Other where hopefully an expert can help you.
Until they do I Googled 'How to uninstall VirusScan 8.6 for MAC' and got this as one of the many choices:  https://kc.mcafee.com/corporate/index?page=content&id=KB54975
There are also uninstall instructions in the User Guide: https://kc.mcafee.com/resources/sites/MCAFEE/content/live/PRODUCT_DOCUMENTATION/ 22000/PD22134/en_US/VirusScan%20for%20Mac%208.6.1%20User%20Guide%20Addendum.pdf
By condemning files to the bin you may have scotched any automated method of removal but I will defer to the experts on that.
    Thanks lot,

  • Lost disk space after Avast anti-virus scan

I used the free Avast anti-virus software to scan my MacBook Air running Mavericks and after the scan about 30 GB of disk space seems to have vanished according to software like Freespace but not according to the Finder's "Get Info" function.  Where is it?  How can I get it back?

In anticipation that most of the responses here would be to uninstall Avast, I did that and it did not solve the problem.
So I ask again:  Does anyone have a solution that is actually a solution.
I am not interested in yet another lecture on how Macs don't have viruses etc etc.  Whether or not they do now, there is no real reason they can't should some teenager in Russia take on the challenge of writing such viruses.   Also, I use Parallels to run some essential Windows applications and I'm sure I will pick up viruses that way.  I have the Windows version of Avast installed in the virtual machine and so far no problems with it--and that I'm keeping unless someone has a better idea for free Windows anti-viral software.
I am a long-time Mac user and I've heard it all, so spare me.  Just advise if you have a specific solution to the problem I've got.

  • Can't uninstall all anti virus files.

I would like to uninstall old anti-virus files. Both Virusbarrier and Norton were used at one time.  Both programs have been deleted but I still get asked about Virsubarrier renewal as well as Norton safe files questions....  I've gone thru applications, library folders and I've used Appzapper.  Where are the hidden files?  What am I missing?

The User Tip (which you are welcome to print out and retain for future reference) seeks to offer some guidance on the main security threats and how to avoid them.
Bear in mind that from April to December 2011 there were only 58 attempted security threats to the Mac - a mere fraction compared to Windows malware:

  • Can't install avast anti virus on my laptop, error self exstract

Windows could not start avast! Anti virus service on local computer.
Error 1075: the dependency service does not exist or has been marked for deletion.
    Please help me

Can you post your full model number and operating system.
A general answer is to only have one anti virus installed, Toshiba normally has a preinstalled antivirus program and it needs to be removed before installing avast anti virus.
Avast can give you problems even BSOD if windows defender is turned on so go to control panel then windows defender, under administrative - uncheck the use this program to turn off windows defender.
Then if you are using Avast internet security you also need to turn off windows firewall so you are not running 2 firewalls.

  • How do I completely uninstall ClamAV from my system?

    Hello folks,
How do I completely uninstall ClamAV from my system?
I trashed the application, but once in a while, the system console pops up with the "ClamAV update process" trying to update ClamAV. How do I safely completely get rid of ClamAV from my system?
    Cheers!

If you are talking about ClamXav, this you would need to follow these directions as posted on his website.
    15. How do remove ClamXav and the associated engine?
First, you must download the Engine Remover. When you unzip it (making sure to use either OS X's built-in unzipper or the most recent Stuffit Expander or similar), double click clamavEngineREMOVER.command. This will open up the Terminal where you'll be asked to enter your Admin password. The rest takes care of itself.
Finally, drag the ClamXav application from wherever you installed it, to the trash.

Intego has their own uninstaller which is the best thing to use. Otherwise, see the following. From a practical point of view you really don't need any such software on the Mac.

How do I complete uninstalling itunes? when I try installing i get an error message saying it can't find the path ,itunes64.msi missing

For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.
The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it, which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down page in case one of them applies.
Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there is backup and recovery advice elsewhere in the user tip.
The section Install missing components has advice on breaking down the iTunes installer into the individual .msi files which might prove useful if one component won't install normally.
