How do I compress a file

Is there a way I can compress a file to send it through email. For instance, say I have a 10mb, poster sized .jpg and I want the recipient to be able to open the full quality file. Or an even bigger .mov that I don't want played in a 1-1/2 inch screen. I kind of thought create archive would do this since it creates a .zip file, but compression there, if any, is minimal.

Hello,
You might try Stuffit Expander. Go here: http://www.stuffit.com/mac/index.html
I use it to compress video and audio files both. Works like a charm and no loss in quality.

    Select the file with one click, then go to File in the menu bar and select Compress...
    By the way Niel's post says control - click. This means click with the control key held down. It produces the same result as going to File in the menu bar and selecting Compress...

  • How do I compress Wav files

    Hi, I have some sound files that I want to be able to email to people, but I can't because the files are too big. Is there a way to compress these files(wav)?

    You may refer to the following there method to compress WAV files
    Method 1: Compress WAV to other audio format
    Compress WAV to lossless compression audio format without losing audio quality like compress WAV to FLAC, compress WAV to Apple Lossless ALAC M4A
    Compress WAV to lossy audio format like compress WAV to MP3, compress WAV to WMA, AAC, RA and etc.
    Method 2: Lower WAV bit rate
    With this method, we can easily reduce WAV file size without changing WAV audio format.
    The lower the bit rate, the smaller the WAV file size, the lower quality of the WAV audio.
    In most cases, WAV audio quality shows little difference between 128kbps and higher bitrates. WAV quality will become crappier if the bit rate is less than 128kbps.
    Method 3: Compress WAV to other audio format as well as lower bit rate
    The third way to compress a WAV file size is that we simultaneously apply Method 1 as well as Method 2.

  • How to Automate Compressing PDF files in a Watched Directory

    I want to automatically compress PDF files as they get placed into a watched directory. I would like the compressed files placed in another directory and have the original file either deleted or place in another directory. If Acrobat Pro X can do this, how do I set it up.

    I noticed that Acrobat Distiller will watch an input directory and move files to an output directory. I tried using Distiller to compress a PDF file, but all it did was move the PDF file to the out directory without doing any compression. Is there any way that Distiller could be configured to do what I want?
    I also called the number listed on the Adobe web site for LiveCycle products. They told me they don't sell their product to non government companies and they referred me to 4 Point to get further info. I called them and only got a voice mail. I'm waiting for a call back.
    I found a product that does exactly what I need. It is called PdfCompressor Professional Edition. But, it costs more than what I want to spend. I'm guessing that LiveCycle will cost more than I want to spend also. If there are any other products that cost less than $150, I would like to know what they are.

  • How can I compress the file?

    I've created a video that starts off with 20 layers and ends with 100, so the video starts moving at a decent speed in the beginning then slows down tremendously from the middle to the end. How can I make the video run at a steady speed? Also how can I make the file size smaller without ruining the quality and changing the image size?

    Alright, there are several things to consider here.
    1. Motion Tweens are expensive, when it comes to speed.  Especially when you layer them on top of each other.  So, if you have 100 layers of motion tweens, the player will tend towards slowing down.
    If you are using Classic Tweens in CS4, or using a prior IDE, then check for broken, or unnecesasry tweens (tweens where there is no motion happening).  Removing these will inevitably speed up the playback.  Also, if there are layers that are continued but invisible, drop a blank keyframe at the end of their visible time.  Less objects = faster playback.
    If this isn't enough, and it many times isn't, consider exporting the whole thing out as a video or image sequence, and importing that into a new project for playback.
    As for file size.  You can change the JPG compression in the publish settings for the project.  I've found that, unless using a lot of raster graphics, you can make this quite low without too much quality loss.  Otherwise, my other suggestion can help with this too (exporting it out and reimporting for playback)

  • How do I compress the file

    My movie file is 4.8 gb and I need 4.2 to fit on my dvd. How do i make it smaller???

    You have several options:
    1. Make the movie shorter by editing it.
    2. Split the project in two halves (by exporting half to Quicktime (best quality) and importing that into a new project, and burn two DVDs.
    3. Use double-layered DVD if your superdrive can do that.
    4. Use Roxio Toast to burn the DVD of the existing project. Toast has an option called 'compress to fit' that means you can burn the entire 2:20 hours on to one single DVD:

  • How do I compress PDF files using Acrobat SDK?

    have a web service created in a .net environment that examines existing pdf files in a staging directory prior to sending them over the wire using FTP.
    Part of that process requires that I rename individual files in order to associate them with a particular batch.
    I also have a requirement to reduce the size of individual files as much as possible in order to reduce the traffic going over the line.
    So far I have managed about a 30% compression rate by using an open source library (iTextSharp).
    I  am hoping that I can get a better compression rate using the Acrobat SDK, but I need someone to show me how, hopefully with an example that I can follow.
    The following code snippet is a model I wrote that accomplishes the rename and file compression...
                const string filePrefix = "19512-";
                string[] fileArray = Directory.GetFiles(@"c:\temp");
                foreach (var pdffile in fileArray) {
                    string[] filePath = pdffile.Split('\\');
                    var newFile = filePath[0] + '\\' + filePath[1] + '\\' + filePrefix + filePath[2];
                    var reader = new PdfReader(pdffile);
                    var stamper = new PdfStamper(reader, new FileStream(newFile, FileMode.Create), PdfWriter.VERSION_1_5);
                    int pageNum = 1;
                    for (int i = 1; i <= pageNum; i++) {
                        reader.SetPageContent(i, reader.GetPageContent(i), PdfStream.BEST_COMPRESSION);
                    stamper.Writer.CompressionLevel = PdfStream.BEST_COMPRESSION;
                    stamper.FormFlattening = true;
                    stamper.SetFullCompression();
                    stamper.Close();
    Any assistance is appreciated.

    You can't use Adobe Acrobat on a server.

    I want to open Avi files which are compressed via different codecs.
    How i able to open those videos through JMF.You'd need a version of the codec that JMF can use...which basiclly means it needs to be written for JMF.

  • How do I compress sound file?

    This is a procedure I've done hundreds of times before, but have now forgotten how, and two people at Apple support (I have the Apple Care Protection Plan) couldn't help and even said that it couldn't be done. All I want to do is to compress a song in my iTunes library. I can now highlight the song and then click on ADVANCED on the menu bar and a compressed copy of the song will be produced in a fraction of a second. The problem is, I want to change the settings of ADVANCED, but I don't remember how to do that. There is a way to change ADVANCED's settings: format (MP3, AAC, WAV, etc.), bitrate, etc, but I just don't remember how. Anyway, after these settings are made, a click on ADVANCED will produce a copy of the song in accordance with the settings that have been selected.
    I know it is extremely easy to do, but I have forgotten. How do I change the settings of ADVANCED?

    This is such a basic procedure, it makes you wonder about the calibre of people that Apple are hiring ...
    Usually, I only have good words for them, but they are only human. My biggest disappointment was a few years ago when I asked for help with SimpleSound, a recording program that used to come with their computers. However, the person I talked to had never heard of it and denied that it existed. I got the same response from someone he consulted. That bothered me, but it was when their supervisor categorically stated that SimpleSound had nothing to do with Apple that I finally gave up. I knew I was right but in the face of three "experts" my conviction was shaken, so I went surfing to find the history of SimpleSound. Well, if I had been wrong, I wouldn't be telling this story, but I wasn't.

  • How do i compress .mov files for sharing via email?

    "COMPRESS" is greyed-out/unavailable.

    Do you really want to compress the jpeg or reduce the image size?  Those are two different things entirely.  To compress a jpeg while keeping the pixel dimensions the smae export out of iPhoto via File ➙ Export ➙ File Export  and in the Quality menu select the amouth of jpeg compression you need to make the file size smaller.
    If you need a smaller picture export as above but set the size to Custom and enter the largest dimenion you want in the image. The image qualtiy will remain the same but the image will be smaller and, to some extent, so will the file size.

    What is the best format to import images into iBA? How should I compress my images before importing? What is the best file format? PNG? Jpeg? I'm trying to figure out the best file format / compression for importing images into iBA. Also, does anyone know how iBA will compress the file? Are the assets attached (like a website) or flattened out? Does anyone know how iBA handles this? Many many thanks to anyone with insight into this.

  • How to compress PDF files

    I have a 72MB PDF file that I want to email. How do I compress this file.

    A curious observation confounded me. I was using OS X to create PDF files from the Print dialog box of  an application, and I found the file size that OS X was creating to be rather large. I used Adobe Acrobat Pro to reduce the file size by using the product's capability to do so. A rather time consuming task, but necessary since the original file sizes were too large to email.
    Completely by accident one day i used Preview within OS X to view a newly created file (4.9 Mb in size), and then "saved" the file to disk. For some reason in doing so, Preview had automatically reduced the file size from 4.9 Mb to less than 200 Kb (coincidentally the same size reduction that Acrobat Pro was doing manually).
    I don't know why, but simply opening in Preview and then saving the file was initiating a massive reduction. To this day, I find that the two step proces of creating a PDF, then doing the Preview reduction is necessary to make the files smaller for email.
