How do I compress or resize a pic?

iPhoto newbie here trying to figure out how to take a TIFF that is over 400mb and reduce it.

pianoorlando:
Try exporting the file to the desktop via the File->Export->File Export menu route. In the last window change the format to jpeg and resize the pixel dimension to what you want. That will give you a greatly reduced file, size wise and dimension wise although not as much as the file size.
Another way is to use the freewareResize!. Drag the photo's thumbnail in iPhoto to the desktop to get a copy of it there. Then drop it on the Resize! application where you can change the format to jpeg, set the pixel dimension to what you want and select the quality level (amount of jpeg compressions). This can reduce that 400 MB file down to a couple of hundred KBs.
Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

How do I resize a pic? I don't want to crop it, just make it smaller.

    Why?
There is a reason to ask.  Aperture gives you superb tools dedicated to two things: storing and organizing your digital photographs, and converting (from RAW) and developing them into the best possible photographs.  It featuress a _lossless_ workflow:  your digital photographs are never altered.  In general, your workflow is:
    . shoot
    . import
    . add metadata and organize
    . develop
    . export.
"Export" means "Make me a sharable image-format file according to these specifications".  You select a size when you export.  For almost all uses, it does not make sense to resize before exporting.
When you export you can specify any size you want.  This and other specifics are set in the "Export Preset" you use.  You can view and edit your Export Presets at "Aperture→Presets→Image Export".

  • Compress or resize image in jpg format?

    Hi guys,
I am developing a video rental web application using JSF, Spring, Hibernate and Tomcat 5. The administrator is able upload image. One of the page is to display a list of available DVD for rental just like ebay product listing page. The problem is that the administrator always upload the image with file size around 100K to 200K bytes and cause slow loading on the listing page, which will display 20 records (20 images). So if 100K bytes per image mean 2MB of images to download.
I am wondering how to compress and resize the image to a smaller resolution once the administrator uploaded the image. I saw eBay that each image is just 2Kbytes an image on the listing page.
Please forgive me if i ask in the wrong forum as i really don't know where to ask. Thank you !!
    regards,
    kmthien

You can do that in Java (you may need to use the -Djava.awt.headless=true option when running the server on headless Unix systems)....
You can use javax.imageio.ImageIO to read an image file to a java.awt.image.BufferedImage object, and write one back out to a JPEG file. And you can create a new BufferedImage simply and draw the original image at a new size on it, then save it. There's plenty of examples around the forums of doing all of that.

to compress (zip) the file, right-click on the document icon and select Compress from the contextual menu that appears. This will likely not reduce the size substantially, as JPEG is already a compressed format.
You'll get much better results by reducing photo resolutions from within the application.

  • How do I compress a pdf with Create PDF so that I can attach it to e-mail?

How do I compress a pdf with Create PDR so that I can attach it to e-mail?

    Hi, Blue Mamba.
Your file is automatically compressed when using the CreatePDF service to convert from some other file type (e.g. Word, Excel) to PDF. For example, most PowerPoint files get compressed 50% to 90% over their original size.
If there is a particular file you're converting to PDF using the CreatePDF service, and you are not seeing the size savings that you would like, please provide more details.
    Thanks.

I don't believe .tifs are a web compatible format. Two options:
    1. You either have to compress it, where it becomes a .sit  or .zip file that is emailable. Your receiver will need to be able to decompress the file.
    2. Change it to a .jpg or .png file which are emailable.
Like Mr. Perkins says your ISP may limit the size of files that can be emailed.
I don't see where web compatibility relates to this issue in any way.
I'd be shocked if any computer whatever is unable to decompress a zip file.  However, as Mr. Perkins and I have confirmed via testing, the amount of compression can range from negligible to significant, depending on the original TIF file.
As far as changing to JPG or PNG, I don't know if that helps the OP.  The question was specifically related to TIFs.  Personally, I still prefer the MobileMe or Dropbox solution.  The recipient receives exactly what the sender wishes to send and email is not clogged up in any manner.

  • How Do I compress video?

I produce sports instructional videos. Trying to learn stuff to podcast. I had my video editor take parts of my videos and put together four 15-20 minutes videos for four separate podcasts. I was able to get the four complete videos in i-Movie. How do I compress the videos?

what I do for my podcast is to edit the Podcst in FCP down to 22mins in length,
export it out as a Quicktime .mov file, and then use Visual Hub to create my
iTunes compatible .mp4 file, which is what you need the files to be compressed to.

  • How do I compress my itunes MP3s to 192kb

How do I compress my whole itunes library MP3s to 192kb? I want to make some space on my HD

in iTunes, go preferences > general. click on +import settings+ and set +import using+ to *MP3 encoder*. in setting, choose the desired bitrate (192 kbps) and okay out.
select the songs to be converted and, from the advanced menu, choose +create MP3 version+.
be aware though that iTunes will create a new file for each one you convert.
you can take care of the duplicate 320 kbps files by sorting your library by +bit rate+ and deleting the 320 kbps versions

For most users just using a browser other than Safari solves the trouble.
When I encounter pages that don't show the Pro "pull down" (right end of the controller) I simply Control click on the video window to bring up the contextual menu.

OK, this may seem like a stupid question for most of you but I haven't used FCP for years.  I am trying to make and upload a 2 min video to the web and don't know how to turn it into a size of 100MB or less.
Yes, I realize that I have Compressor but it does not work on my computer for some reason.  I think my laptop is too old for it or something.
It needs to be in one of these formats and I would like to use the highest quality.  Suggestions needed for this also since this will be my first attempt at an uploaded video.

First, let me apologize for the way we were chatting on your thread while waiting.
Let me summerize what I think we have here:
    1. You have a 2 minute show you want to convert to some codec appropriate for high quality presentation, but under 100MB final filesize.
    2. You feel you don't want to use Compressor or a preset for YouTube.
    3. You're in a hurry.
The fastest and highest quality method of making this conversion is using Compressor. It is designed to do precisely what you ask. The codec you want is H.264.
The YouTube preset is being suggested not because we think you're going to upload the clip to that site, but because the YouTube preset is a remarkably easy way to get a HQ H.264 clip with acceptable filesize. I'm staring at a 3:40 clip of 1080p that would knock your socks off and it's 90MB!
Even on a laptop the conversion is a matter of minutes.
If you're OK with my arguement, I'll write out a step-by-step proc for you and you can be done with this in time for that primetime show you want to watch.  OK?
