How do I configure an older airport express with Yosemite?

I Have an older airport express and my computer will not recognize it in Airport Uitlity. I tried using an older Airport Utility (5.6) but it cannot be run on Yosemite

Please help!
I can't create a new thread
I am trying to get a A1264 to connect to a Macbook pro 2014 with yosemite.
- Airport Express A1264 (from 2008)
- MacBook Pro Retina mid-2014
- Last updates Yosemite blah blah
I usually use my old Imac as a wifi sender. It's running on a VPN, cable plugged directly in the wall.
Please explain step by step what I should do. For now, I plugged the Airport in the wall and plugged the Ethernet cable in it. It lights green (no flashing). But Airport Utility (the new one and the old one) doesn't detect it and I don't have an option to set a new Airport. There is "configure others" but then it asks for address and password.
Thanks

  • Configure an older airport express with my iMac running 10.10.1

I did a master reset on my airport express and now the software under the preferences/network section says...
Airport Utility does not support this base station.
How can I get or download the software to support/configure my older airport extreme basestation?
    Chers,
    Sean

Unfortunately, Apple dropped support of the older AirPort routers several years ago, so you will need to have.....or be able to borrow for 10-15 minutes......a Mac running Leopard (10.5.x) or Snow Leopard (10.6.x) or a PC with AirPort Utility installed on the computer to be able to administer the older AirPort router.

Here is my method.. the software is free that is required.. always a good point.
How to load 5.6 into ML.
    1. Download 5.6 for Lion.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482
Click to open the dmg but do not attempt to install the pkg.. it won't work anyway.
    2. Download and install unpkg.
    http://www.timdoug.com/unpkg/
Run unpkg on the desktop.. it is very simple.. drag the AirPortUtility56.pkg file over to unpkg.. and it will create a new directory of the same name on the desktop.. drill down.. applications utilities .. there lo and behold is Airport utility 5.6 .. drag it to your main utilities directory or just run it from current location.
You cannot uninstall 6.1 so don't try.. and you cannot or should not run them both at the same time.. so just ignore the toyland version.. the plastic hammer.. and start using 5.6.. a real tool.

  • How do  i set up apple airport express with my wi fi

how do  i set up apple airport express with my wi fi

What is the make & model of the wireless router that is currently providing your Wi-Fi network? What is your goal for the AirPort Express base station? To extend this Wi-Fi network or for streaming iTunes/sharing a USB printer ... or both? Finally which model of Express do you have?

  • How can I manage an older airport express base station with Mountain Lion?

This version of AirPort Utility doesn't support this base station. Use AirPort Utility 5.6 to configure or manage this base station. AirPort Utility 5.6 is available at AirPort Service and Support."
I tried to install AirPort Utility 5.6 on my Mac OSX 10.8 Mac Book and it will not allow me to.  How do I manage my "older" airport?

The 5.6 version can be installed but it does take an alternative route to do so. For example, you can use a utility like Pacifist to first extract the utility, and then, move it to the Utilities folder. Once "installed" by this method, it runs just fine on Mountain Lion.

  • Replacing an older Airport Express with an N

My older Airport Express was used primarily for streaming music to a stereo system which was intermittently dropping out. Since proximity wasn't an issue it was suggested to upgrade to the N version.
After installing the Disc Version 1.5 and plugging in the new Airport Express, which is currently blinking amber, it doesn't show up in the Utility menu. The old unit shows up in the Utility menu when reinstalled.
Am I missing a fundamental step to introduce the new Airport Express unit into the network?

    Vic,
I see you have multiple computers handy.
Have you tried any of your other computers using Airport Utility to find your new AX?
The new AX should show up as a new Base Station and be ready to configure unless something is wrong with it.
Some people like to attach ethernet cables to it to get started but I am not found of that.
I have owned 3 of the older "g" models and now 3 of the newer "n" models. Plus I have set up more AX's then I can count. Never had a problem.
If it can't be found wirelessly, then I would take it back.
However, first try some of your other computers and see if you can find the new AX...

  • Can I use my older airport express with an ext drive to backup time machine wireless, Can I use my older airport express with an ext drive to backup time machine wireless

Can I use an older (flat) Airport Express to attach an ext hard drive and backup time machine wirelessly? and how?

can I then connect a HD with itunes music and photos?
Now we are drifting from the original question.
Im alreadty using the HD attached to my Mac Pro...can I just connect it to the Extreme and access it wirelessly with any device on the wifi net?
You may get another opinion on this from another user, but I do not recommend this either, based on a number of experimens over the years with this.
Access to your data on the drive will be much slower. iTunes will tend to "lose" the library this way and you will have to re-point the iTunes application at the library on a regular basis.
Things are even worse with the iPhoto library. The experts over in the iPhoto support area strongly advise that you do not do this, since any break in communication between the iPhoto application and iPhoto library can easily corrupt the entire library.  A wireless connection makes things even more dicey.
My advice......Use a drive connected to the Extreme for storage or other backup copies of data.....not for "working" files or libraries.
But, you may get some other opinions from users here.

  • Configure an older airport extreme with an ipad1

I'm a complete noob regarding wireless. I bought an ipad1 and an older aiport extreme (the white round one) off of ebay and am not sure how to get it all up and running. My Mac Pro does not have a wifi card so I can't use that. I plan to connect the airport to my router via ethernet. I've read that you can't configure an airport extreme with the ipad. What do I need to do to set up the extreme so the ipad can see and use it?
    thanks

If the extreme is already configured, can I edit it using the app?
Sure, if AirPort Utility recognizes the AirPort Extreme. Otherwise, you have to perform a Factory Default Reset on the Extreme and start over from scratch
Open AirPort Utility, select the Extreme, and click Manual Setup
Click the Wireless tab below the row of icons to get to the wireless settings.
You want Wireless Mode set to "'Create a wireless network"
Wireless Network Name is your choice
Radio Mode = Automatic or 802.11b/g
    Channel =Automatic
    Wireless Security = WPA/WPA2 Personal
    Password = Your choice
    Confirm Password
    Click the Internet icon
    Click the Internet Connection tab
    Connect Using = Ethernet
Connection Sharing = Off (Bridge Mode)
    Update to save settings.

  • How can i use my old airport express with my new imac and wireless hp print

i just bought my first imac (intel) and a wireless hp printer. i now realize that a wireless connection between my imac and my printer needs a router.
i have an airport express base station, which is a few years old. I can't find my documentation, so i don't know its specifications.
how can i find out the specs of the airport express i have and whether i can use it now? it says that it is model a1084 100-240v~ 0.2a 50-60 hz.
does that tell any knowledgeable people out there about the specs? can i search the apple website by serial number and find the specs?
thank all of you potential responders ahead of time.

  • How to use more than one airport express with multiple speakers

I have 2 Airport Express. Prior to the multiple speaker enhansement I changed spekers by changing the wireless network. Each of the Airports is recognised as a wirelss network. Is there any way I can make my computer and itunes to see all of my Airports so I can use the Multiple Speaker function for both of my Airports at the same time withour having to change wireless network.

You need to have a single wireless network.
If you con't have a wireless router, then you will need to configure one of the Airport Express (AX) units to join the existing wireless network of the other AX.

  • How do I hard wire multiple airport expresses with a switch

I have two airport expresses and other hardwired devices.  I am trying to get them wired together for a roaming network not to extend the network, but can't seem to get it to work with a switch.
Here is the setup Modem -> Airport Express -> 5 ports switch -> one of the ports is ran to an airport express.  What I'm trying to determine is if the airport device needs to be physically plugged in to the other airport to create a roaming network or can it be ran through a switch. Notice the dotted line vs the solid line.  Now obviously because I found the picture on the internet, I only have two devices not 3.
    Here is mine:
Here is what i'm trying accomplish. (Image from: http://forums.macrumors.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=345142&d=1340677218)

If you have a simple modem.....then you must connect the modem directly to an AirPort....then connect the switch to the AirPort and then connect other AirPorts and devices to the switch. So, it would look like this:
Internet > Simple Modem > AirPort > Switch > Other Devices
If you have a modem/router or gateway type of device.....then you can connect the switch to the modem/router or gateway.....and then connect the AirPorts to the switch. In this case, things would look like this:
Internet > Modem/Router (Gateway) > Switch > AirPorts and other Devices
So, before we go further with this, it is important to understand what type of modem that you have, as it will dictate what you can and cannot do on the network.
What is the make and model number of the device that you call your "modem"?

  • Configuring Older Airport Express

I have an older airport express but I'm running 10.8.2 and my airport utility won't talk to it. And 5.6 airport utility which will configure the older airport express, won't run with 10.8.2. Is there any possible workaround? Or is my barely used airport express useless?
    Any help would be appreciated.

See this article for a workaround to be able to install AirPort Utility 5.6 on Mountain Lion.

As you might imagine, this is not supported by Apple. It works fine for me, but there is unfortunately no way that I can say if it work for you.

How do I replace a older Airport Extreme with a newer model? (Mac Mini OS 10.6.8 )

There is not much more to it than to buy a new one, and configure it using AirPort Utility.
You should be using AirPort Utility 5.6.1.
Power down your modem before removing your older Extreme and connecting the new one.
