How do I connect airport extreme to seagate hard drive using windows

How do I connect airport extreme to seagate hard drive using windows?

First the AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS) cannot share out an external HDD attached to its USB port unless it is formatted in either HFS+ or FAT16/32. It will not work if the HDD is formatted in either NTFS or ExFAT.
If the HDD is formatted properly, when you access the AEBS with the AirPort Utility, does the HDD show up properly on the Disks tab of the utility?
If it does, then you would access the HDD as any other network share, using the following format: //servername/sharename. In the case of the AirPort Disk (a HDD attached to the USB port of either an Extreme or Time Capsule), the "servername" would be the Extreme's Base Station Name, and the "sharename" would be the volumename of the HDD.

  • Airport Extreme with External Hard Drive on Windows 7

I just purchased an Airport Extreme in order to connect my collection of old hard drives so I can share the files with my Windows computer and Apple TV.
My main problem is accessing a single hard drive (exFAT, one partition -- couldn't format into FAT32) from my Windows 7 laptop. The Airport connects wirelessly to my Fios router with no problem.
Using the Airport Utility > Disks I can see the hard drive (although it only shows its physical name "SAMSUNG HM302JI" not the name I gave it when I formatted it, "Storage300GB"), however it doesn't show any files on the drive (and there are a few test files of all types: jpg, xlsx, a sub-folder, etc.). I can't see the drive via My Computer nor can I map the drive using the IP address (192.168.1.13). When I tried adding a USB hub (for adding the other hard drives once I get this one working) I see the same problem, just the name of the device but no folders.
Norton 360 can see the device, but Windows cannot. I've tried turning off Norton, but that hasn't helped.
I have searched the web and support communities high and low, and I have yet to find any help.
    Any help would be appreciated!!

The real main problem is that the USB port on the AirPort Extreme will not support exFAT or NTFS.
It will support HFS+ and FAT16/32.

  • Since upgrading to Mavericks, I can't connect to my external Seagate hard drive. How to I fix this??????

I have two Seagate hard drives that were working fine for a couple years until I upgraded to Mavericks. They connect via USB and never show up in Finder.

I tried to connect a Samsung hard drive. Before Mavericks it was working fine. Now it won't appear in Finder and it can't be mounted in Disk Utility. As with previous issues I reported concerning iOS 7 and Mavericks, I wrote in this forum, but Apple never reacts. People are trying to help each other with workarounds, which is great, but the core issue isn't solved by Apple. It seems after Steve Jobs they're not concerned about quality that much anymore. The fact that I can't use a very common Samsung external hard drive on Mavericks is just way beyond deplorable. And what did I get in return? iBooks?

Could you help me, I would like to use my Seagate hard drive that I used on my PC on my IMAC but It does not recognize it and I have a lot of documents I need on this small hard drive....

Please provide more information. Do you mean the drive cannot be seen in Finder or on the Desktop? If it is visible in the Finder sidebar but not the Desktop you just have a setting to correct Finder - Preferences - General Tab and make sure External Disks is checked.

  • How do I connect Airport Extreme and Time Capsule to my new iMac so that AE is used for network and TC only used for Time Machine backup?

I didn't realize that Time Capsule will only support the print function of a wireless multifunction printer.  So I want to use Extreme for my network to have full use of my printer and use TC as the Time machine backup only.  How to I make the connections?

Thanks for your response and this is getting complicated but I just purchased a new iMac as well as the Airport TC.  I've had the Airport Extreme for a year or so.  The Airport Extreme worked perfectly with my old iMac wirelessly and I had all functions of my printer with no problems.  I was expecting the same with the TC.  But the instruction that came with TC say to connect the printer to the TC via USB...which I did.  And the print function worked perfectly but nothing else.  In researching I discovered that when wired that way the TC only supports the print function...not scan or fax or anything else.  I tried going wireless since my AE worked perfectly via wireless but I got no printer functions at all that way.  But I'm wondering also if I tried that during a time I was having other issues...I had to delete and re-add my printer which solved some other problems.  I may try that again...and see if I can get all print functions with just the TC connected
As far as connecting both your AirPort Extreme and Time Capsule on your network, we're not clear on exactly how you want to do this.  Will the AirPort Extreme connect to your modem using an Ethernet cable and the Time Capsule connect to the AirPort Extreme using an Ethernet cable?.......or......do you want the Time Capsule to connect to the network using wireless?
Well... first of all I would like not to have to use the AE at all...I would prefer using just my TC for network, all print functions and Time Machine backup if that's possible. My printer will not accept Ethernet connections (Canon MX512).
After failing at getting this to work, I decided I would try to use my AE for net and print functions and just use my TC for Time Machine backup.  I tried several different connection configurations with no success until finally I connected cable modem to my AE via Ethernet and went wireless with the AE and printer. but connected the AE to the TC via Ethernet and amazingly everything worked like a charm (for a while) and I was patting myself on the back for being so smart.  But now I find that the connection only lasts for a short time.  If I leave it for a while the TC goes invisible...or at least I see a message saying the Ethernet is unplugged...but it is not... and I lose internet connection even though I have a green light on my AE. So now I'm at a loss. I don't know why I keep losing network signal and why my system thinks the Ethernet is unplugged.
So... after all this...I figured I wasn't so smart after all and I must have things wired incorrectly.
So... it sounds like you are saying I should go back and try again to get my new TC to work as I want it to via wireless instead of connecting via USB...is that correct?  Could you tell me exactly how I should wire my equipment from cable modem to AE and/or TC to achieve net capability, full functions of my printer and Time Machine backup...
    Thanks...

  • How do I connect Airport Extreme to XBox 360 live

I just bought an Airport Extreme to use as my wireless router.  Everything connected beautifully EXCEPT my all in one HP Printer and my XBOX 360.  If I manually enter the settings, I can connect but only for a minute or 2.  Once my son starts using xbox LIVE, the connection gets dropped.  All instructions I can find must be for older utilities.  I eventually plugged in my old G Router into an open LAN port on the back of the Airport Extreme and got my printer working when connecting to the old network ID but still can't get XBOX 360 to connect and stay connected.  Any help is appreciated.

Ok, thanks for the update. Do you have the Xbox connected to the 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn) by Ethernet (wire) or by wireless? If wireless, temporarily connect it by Ethernet to verify that you can get connectivity via this method.
If you were using wireless, which of the following is the wireless adapter that you are using?
    802.11g or
    802.11n?

  • How can I connect airport extremes using a wired-switch connection and have roaming capability?

My goal is to have 2 airport extremes and 1 timecapule connected via an ethernet switch so that I can enable roaming. I have no problems connecting them wirelessly where I create the wireless network on a primary airport wireless then add the others "extending" the network. However, if I attempt to do the same thing with a wired connection everything stops working (no connections from any airport). Here's the topology I'm trying to achieve. I believe my problem relates to the switch and the fact that I am serving up DHCP from a separate server. Is there a way I can achieve this (or similar) type of configuration? Thanks in advance.
BTW, I have read the various documents on the roaming network topology  but none seem to be a match to this.

To answer your question, yes, if I _only_ have the main "create wireless network" airport connected/wired to the switch, everything works correctly.
    OK, got that.
Also, if I have each of the 3 airports/timecapsule "create wireless network" using the same ssid name and passwd/protocol, everything works correctly (but of course, no roaming under this scenario
Sorry, you have me confused on this one. When the AirPorts are all configured to "create a wireless network", use the same SSID, security and password, and all AirPorts are in Bridge Mode........that is the exact definition of a "roaming" network.
Not sure what you mean when you say "no roaming" in this configuration.
Also, if I have the main "create wireless network" configured and have the 2 other airports "extend the network" and _not_ have them connected via the ethernet cable, everything works correctly (wireless airport interconnection)
    That is correct.
However, if I plug the 2 other "extend the network" airports into the switch via ethernet, all connectivity shuts down.
This is not a correct setup. The "extend" setting on the AirPort assumes that they will connect using wireless.  If you then try to connect an Ethernet cable to an AirPort that is expecting a wireless connection, that will result in a big feedback loop and effectively crash the network.

  • How do you connect Airport Extreme and share HP Photosmart 3210 Printer?

    Hello,
I have a Mac and PC Network composed of:
iMac 24'' Leopard 10.5.2 (main computer)
2 PC Fujitsu Pentium 4 on Windows XP
2 PC HP Pentium 4 on Windows XP
my network/connections are done via Airport Extreme and 2 hubs (other devices connected to the network like Wii, XBox etc.)
I am trying to share my HP Photosmart 3210 using the USB connector on Airport Extreme but I am experiencing strange problems while printing from the iMac. I can print an e-mail or a "light" document however if I want to print a Mac powerpoint (Mac office) largest document, the problem starts after the second or 3rd page, the printer goes on pause at the middle of the page and the interface indicates "problem communicating with the printer" or something like that.....unique possibility is to turn the printer off and start again but the problem persists. However, it seems that the printer works ok from the PC's.
I have tried to install the latest versin of the HP driver on my iMac but while configuring, the printer doesn't appear....I have checked on the printer settings and the IP address is 0.0.0.0.
I am now thinking about connecting the Printer via one of the Ethernet port on Airport Extreme.
    Questions:
    1. Any help on the above ? Any advice ?
    2. Is it normal to have no IP address on the printer when connected via USB on Airport Extreme ?
    3. Why HP config doesn't recognize the printer on the network ?
    4. Why does it work from the PCs and not from the iMac and why does it print light documents and not big ones ? Is this a memory7buffer problem on the printer ? What can I do if this is the case ?
    5. On the Airport Extreme Utility, do I need to share the printer via "Bonjour"?
    6. I am willing to plug an extrenal HD on the Airport Express USB port. Is it possible to put first a multi USB port on the Airport Extreme USB or is it going to cause problems ?
Thanks a lot for your help.

NCBob, Welcome to the discussion area!
If I understand correctly you are replacing the Linksys. It should be a simple replacement. Connect the cable modem to the WAN port on the AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS). Connect your Ethernet devices (including the switch) to the AEBS LAN ports.

  • How do I connect Airport Extreme to U-verse Internet Gateway: Motorola Model NVG510

I tried to set up a new network with the Airport Extreme and get no Internet connectivity from the AT&T gateway.  The Extreme network sets up fine and I can access it from all my devices, but no Internet.
    What am I doing wrong?
    Thanks,
    Mick Jones

It will only take a minute to check the Ethernet cable. Just connect it from a LAN <-> port on the Uverse gateway to  the Ethernet port on a computer. Turn off the wireless on the computer and see if you can get a good Internet connection that way.
If you can, great. You cannot, then you either have a bad Ethernet cable or the port on the gateway may not be working correctly.
Power up the AirPort Extreme for a few minutes
Then, hold in the reset button on the AirPort Extreme for 10-12 seconds and release
Allow a full minute for the AirPort to restart
Connect the Ethernet cable from a LAN <-> port on the Uverse gateway to the WAN "O" port on the AirPort Extreme
Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
    Click on Other WiFi Devices
    Click AirPort Extreme
The utility will open up automatically, take a minute to analyze things, then suggest that the AirPort will be configured to create a new network.  The window will look like the example below, except that you will see an AirPort Extreme instead of an AirPort Express.
Network Name......type in a short, simple name that you want to call your wireless network
Base Station Name.....type in a short, simple name that you want to use to identify the AirPort Extreme
Password......type in a password that will be used for both the Base Station and Wireless Network
    Verify the password
    Click Next
You should have a green light on the AirPort Extreme in a minute or two, and you should be able to log on to the new network and get an Internet connection.

  • Airport Extreme + shared USB hard drive // Mac + PC Access

We are getting ready to purchase an Airport Extreme for our home network. Here's what we are working with:
    1) Airport Extreme
    2) MacBook
    3) MacMini
    4) PC
    5) TBD USB hard drive that will be connected to AirPort Extreme *for use as shared hard drive*
From the Apple website, regarding the Airport Extreme "Hard Drive Sharing":
+How does it work? Just connect the external hard drive to the USB port on the back of your AirPort Extreme and — voilà — all the documents, videos, photos, and other files on the drive instantly become available to anyone on the secure network, Mac and PC users alike. It’s perfect for file sharing, collaborative projects, and more.+
Can anyone recommend a specific brand and model USB hard drive that they have experience with in this scenario that was/is used as a shared drive that is accessible from both Macs and PCs?
I ask this question because I have a WD external hard drive that did not play nice - it was either PC or Mac, not both.
    Thanks

I have 1-4 and a Seagate FreeAgent Desk drive (not an endorsement, just answering your question), and can access the drive from all of 2-4. How you format the drive and/or what files you store on the drive will affect your ability to access/use those files on the drive from Mac/PC. For example, I can't use my iTunes library stored on the drive from the PC, as it's formatted for Mac. Honestly, I never have accessed the drive from my PC until you asked this question, but it worked!

  • Help With Airport Extreme and External Hard Drive

I just purchased the Airport Extreme and I couldn't have been happier. I have attached my western digital external hard drive, but I have run into a slight problem/dilemma which I'm hoping someone who is apple savvy can help me out.
I live in a house with a couple of other guys and so I put all of my movies and media onto the hard drive so we can stream it throughout the house, but how do I make sure that someone won't accidently delete the files (The copies on the hard drive are the only ones I have)? I have tried to right click "get info" and change the sharing & permissions properties on the folders that I don't want deleted, but it doesn't save the changes or even allow me to select another option other than Read & Write. I formated the hard drive with the disk utility before I connected it to the AirPort so I know that it has nothing to do with the format of the drive. I also tried to create different user accounts for each roomate so that they could view the files (Read Only) but I get an error message explaining that if I continue, the contents of the hard drive will not be accessible. I'm sure its something simple but I'm obviously missing it.
    Thanks!

Airport Utility under Disks/File Sharing has guest access rights.

  • Airport extreme with USB hard drive permissions problem may be parallels

I cannot access my external hard drive because of some permission problem. I know because I can see this through the disk repair utility. I've attached my external hard drive to my airport extreme. It originally came up well and worked fine. Then it lost connection and now doesn't recognize my password. To confuse matters worse I have parallels installed. This might be where the password problem is as the mac wants to access as a guest and the parallels (windows MX) as my account name. It's all pretty complicated to explain. What I want to do now is just to forget the airport plan and reach my hard drive but it won't boot up even with airport off and a direct firewire connection. It does show up in disk repair utility but with permissions. How can I get to these permissions and drop them. What if they're windows permissions somehow? How can I get started.
    Thanks

I have a very similar problem. I have a 2.8 GHz iMac with 2GB RAM and am using OS X v10.5.4, and an Airport Extreme (v7.3.2), both updated to latest firmware. I have a 500 GB TrekStor external HD connected to the AEBS via USB. The TrekStor HD was pre-formatted in FAT32 and is visible on my iMac's desktop and in Finder but I cannot transfer files to it or see files on it. When I drag and drop a file on the TrekStor, it sometimes seems to go well but then the file is not visible via Finder, and sometimes I get an "insufficient privileges" message. I repair permissions on the iMac's internal HD without any change. I am logged in as the admin. All assistance is much appreciated!

  • Read/Write speeds with Airport Extreme and USB Hard Drives

Anybody know how fast the read/write speeds are with a USB hard drive and the Airport Extreme Base Station?
    My Setup
    I have a 17 MBP (2010) and a 13 MBP (2011) - no SSD's
MBP generally connect via 802.11n 5Ghz with a very strong signal
Gigabit connection on a Windows Desktop
    I have a variety of external drives (7200, 5400, Drobo) at varying capacity (320GB, 2TB, 5.6TB)
    Goals
    Backup: Time machine
Backup: File copies of pictures and home videos (greater than 1GB files)
    Backup: Crashplan
File sharing: Aperture libraries--not sure if that is possible or practical. That is something that I need to research further...but on the off chance people have experience with it.
    Thanks!

    Welcome to Apple's discussion groups.
Apple's AirPort base stations aren't known for fast file serving, but for most purposed they're fast enough.
I can't comment specifically on your Aperture plan, but with some software it's important to avoid simultaneous access by more than one user.
