How do I connect an external hard drive to my airport for my macbook (10.4.11)?
The instructions below are what I found on Apple help. But when I double click on the base station name in the Airport Admin Utility, the configuration window that comes up doesn't have a 'Disks button', as the instructions below say it should. It seems like I'm seeing a slightly different user interface than these instructions assume. Can anyone help? Thanks. Angus
To share a hard disk on your network:
1 Plug the hard disk into the USB port on the back of the AirPort Extreme Base Station
or Time Capsule.
2 Open AirPort Utility, located in the Utilities folder in the Applications folder on a Mac,
or in Start > All Programs > AirPort on a Windows computer.
3 Select your AirPort Extreme Base Station or your Time Capsule, and then choose Base
Station > Manual Setup, or double-click the device icon to open its configuration in a
separate window. Enter the password if necessary.
4 Click the Disks button, and then click File Sharing.
5 Choose “With a disk password,” or “With base station password” if you want to secure
the shared disk with a password, or choose “With accounts” if you want to secure the
disk using accounts.
 If you choose to use accounts, click Configure Accounts, click the Add button,
and then enter a name and password for each user that will access the disk.
6 Choose “Not allowed,” “Read only,” or “Read and write” to assign guest access to
the disk.
7 Select the “Share disks over Ethernet WAN port” checkbox if you want to provide
remote access to the disk over the WAN port.
Data transfer speed may vary, depending on the network.
I assume that you are using Mac operating system 10.4.11, as your profile indicates.
The instructions that you referenced are for use with AirPort Utility....not AirPort Admin Utility.
Suggest that you download and install AirPort Utility 5.4.2 for Mac , which will run on 10.4.11.
Also noticed that the instructions do not tell you that the hard drive should be formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) to work with the AirPort Extreme, but they should.

Here what's going on. I have an old aiport, Iomega external hard drive and a Netgear N router. My goal is so connect the external hard drive to the airport via the USB port so I can access my photos through the network. I have a Mac Book pro with a full hard drive and a PC laptop. The Netgear N router is currently connected to my cable modem and the Airport is connected to the Netgear Router in bridge mode. However when I connect the External HD to the Airport it cannot be seen. I can see it when I connect it to my mac directly but I would prefer to share my pictures over the network and keep the External HD stationary instead of moving wherever my laptop goes. I also read that the Airport can slow down the internet speed because it is not an "N" so that is why I currently have it in bridge mode. Is there anyway to get this done? Thanks in advance.

There's dozens of different AirPort base station models, and the only ones that work with a USB harddrive are the AirPort Extreme's with 802.11 n (flat, square-shaped with 4 ethernet ports). The AirPort Expresses and older dome-shaped base stations do not have that capability.
If you have an AirPort Extreme which meets the requirements of connecting a USB drive, you can verify whether it's connected by configuring it manually using the AirPort Utility and looking under the disks tab.

How do I connect my external hard drive with all of my digital media to my Apple TV network and make it accessable 24/7? I have the latest Apple TV, ipads, iPhones as well as a solid HP Windows machine all on my home network. Is there a way that I can connect my hard drive to my receiver or Apple TV directly so that the digital media is available on my network 24/7 rather than have it connected to my computer and available through Home Share which never works anyway??

You can google the Seagate GoFlex which is a hard drive that has a wireless transmitter you can use to stream content from your drive to your iPad. There's also the WiDrive which is another wireless hard drive
In a lot of cases you do need to research deep. The iPad does not have a traditional file manager like computers, so the functionality of external or extra drives is very limited, often limited to whatever the app associated with the drive allows.
it's not a case of just plugging it in and having hundreds of gigs at your disposal to read from and write to at will. -

Thanks!To be recognized by the AirPort for sharing, the WD HDD has to be formatted in either HFS+ (ideal) or FAT32. The easiest way to format the HDD is to use the Disk Utility in OS X.

I like having a copy of everything at another site in case of a house fire. Can I connect an external hard drive to Time Capsule to make a duplicate of what is on Time Capsule? I would store that hard drive at work and bring it home monthly or something to back up Time Capsule. Thanks!

That is exactly what the Archive function on the Time Capsule is for. Connect a USB drive and click Archive, and a mirror image of your Time Capsule will be copied over to the USB drive. It's a slow process that will take 4-8 hours depending on how much data is on the Time Capsule, so best to start things late at night and let them run overnight.
Another option would be to use a commercial application like Carbon Copy Cloner to keep your backup. The advantage to this approach is that once the first "master" backup is done, the application will only back up the changes on the Time Capsule that have occurred since the last backup. So, subsequent backups will be much faster, probably only taking about 10-15 minutes. -
I am having an issue with connecting my external hard drive to my airport time capsule.
I just recently purchased the new AirPort Time Capsule. The network set-up easily. However, when I connected my external hard drive (via USB) to it, the external hard drive does not show up in my Finder and I am otherwise unable to access the external hard drive from any computer connected the the network. When I plug the external hard drive in directly to my iMac, the external hard drive is recognized right away and I am able to access all folders. Any tips?
Check to make sure that the drive is formatted in Mac OS Extended Journaled or FAT32.
If the drive is formatted correctly and recognized by the Time Capsule, it will appear when you open AirPort Utility and click on the Disks tab.
Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
Click the Time Capsule icon, then click Edit
Click the Disks tab at the top of the next page
If the drive is formatted correctly and not recognized, you will likely need to use a powered USB hub with the drive....even if the drive has its own power supply, since the USB port on the Time Capsule tends to be underpowered. -

FelipeDid you have any luck with this? I have the same issue... my Samsung TV used to connect fine with USB drives connected to other routers, but since I upgraded to Airport Extreme, the TV no longer sees any external drives, although WiFi is working great via Airport Extreme.

How can I use my external hard drive with my new (firewire-less) MacBook?
I read in another post that the available firewire adapters don't work for external hard drives. So how can I get my music, etc. off my external hard drive and onto my new computer?

They are USB ports - the smaller one is a mini-USB (like you might find on a digital camera) and the third is a USB-B port (such as on a printer). You can use a mini or standard USB cable (depending on the port) to connect it to your Macbook.

Hi, I am attempting to see my extrenal hard drive, connected to my airport extreme base station, in time machine. I formatted the disk, backed up my mackbook pro to it via usb, and now want to be able to backup over wifi with my disk connected to my airport extreme base station. I spoke with Apple Care, and they told me Apple doens't support this. I used to be able to do this with my older MB pro and under older osx's. I do see the external hard drive connected under disks, just not in time machine preferences. Is there a workaround available that anyone is aware of?

How do i access an external hard drive through time capsule from my macbook
I've just bought a 2GB Time Capsule but I can't see my external hard drive plugged in to the Time Capsule's USB in Finder from my Macbook.
When I plug the hard drive in to the Macbook the drive appears on the desktop. HDD was originally set up for a windows machine, I've read some other posts that say the Time Capsule won't back up the drive unless it's Mac Formatted... does the same apply if you are just trying to access it and copy files etc?
I'm connected wirelessly through the Time Capsule.

... so if I have a correctly formatted HDD, I presume I can just see the HDD in Finder under 'Data' in Time Capsule?
I might just transfer the files I need from my HDD connected to my Macbook on to the TimeCapsule over the wifi and sort the formatting issue later. -

Using an airport express can an external hard drive be used successfully to store photo files directly to be used with Iphoto?
The only way a network drive format can be relevant is using a virtual disk. Otherwise it is not offering HFS+ or FAT32 or NTFS or anything else.. it is offering a network protocol for file storage. You can of course create a virtual disk space using methods pondini mentions here.

I know TM requires HFS+ to work.. and I do have it working on an SMB drive in a NAS.. the NAS has formatted the drives XFS I think or EXT3.. but it will be some linux format.. TM creates the sparsebundle on the disk.. the sparsebundle is a virtual disk which is HFS+ as required..
Whether that is required ofr iphoto I don't have experience with to know. You could well be right.. in which case it explains why iphoto gives so much trouble if people even use TC as a place to store the library.
Nevertheless the NAS itself cannot use HFS+.. the only device that i know of that uses HFS+ for internal format of the disk is Time Capsule. There is no other NAS on the market that uses it because Linux cannot reliably write HFS+.. it can handle HFS. Almost every NAS in existence runs Linux.. again the TC is unusual running NetBSD. Which is probably a requirement so it can run HFS+ on the disk. And so Time Machine can work reliably.
