How do I connect Apple TV2 to an older TV?

Hi Apple Community
I just bought 2 Apple TV2s, one for my family room and one for my bedroom. My family room TV is a late generation Sony WEGA (Trinitron/CRT) with a YPbPr (RGB RCA) port in the back of it. I knew that AppleTV2 did not have a component video connection, so I bought a cheap HDMI to component signal converter to connect to the YPbPr port.
Well, when i connected everything up all I get are crazy lines on the screen (clearly there is a signal translation issue). In theory everything should have worked. I am sure this issue has come up for others in the community - is there an HDMI converter box that you would recommend that will work in this situation? I looked online and there seem to be half a dozen candidates, but I'd like to get an opinion from this forum. Any thoughts?
Dude

I'm not really willing to recommend any converters since most of them will run into an issue with HDCP which is included in iTunes content purchased and rented from the iTMS since component doesn't support HDCP. Any conversion device that circumvents such copy protection cannot be discussed in these forums under it's terms of Use.
I have one thought about the converter you have purchased, check that your TV is YPbPr and not YCbCr.

how can i get apple tv2 to recognize more than one computer in my house, I just got it and can only find one of two computers in my home

Same here. I have 1 ATV2 and 2 computers and each has separate iTunes accounts (mine and my wife's). The ATV menu says "computers" so I presume you can have more than 1 computer on 1 ATV. The big question is how do you set it up?

  • How to connect apple tv2 to receiver

Apple tv is connected to tv via hdmi - working perfectly. But i would like to connect apple tv to my receiver as well - for surround sound on movies and for streaming audio from the computer.
My receiver has 3 optical ports in addition to the DVD coax ( CD, CDR and TV) which one do i use to connect from apple tv  - none seem to work.
Apple TV set to dolby output.
receiver digital in is turned on
    No sound from the receiver
    Help!

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
You need to use one of the optical ports.
Are you sure they are optical ports.
Are you sure you are matching the input to the output correctly on the receiver.
Have you tried adjusting the audio out and Dolby digital settings on the Apple TV.

  • Problem connecting Apple TV2 to projector when passing through Sony Sound Bar

I'm having problems getting my Apple TV2 to work now that I'm passing it through my new Sony HT-CT150 Sound Bar to my Epson Megaplex Projector MG-850 (720p) Projector. I keep getting a "Not Supported" error on my projector - as opposed to a "No Signal" error which is what happens if I was to unplug the Apple TV.
My HDMI cables are all new and latest specs. I can connect the Apple TV directly to projector with either cable and it works fine. I have a 6 ft HDMI connecting the Apple TV to one of the Sony Sound Bar's 3 HDMI inputs and then a 40 ft. HDMI running from the sound bar's HDMI out to the projector's single HDMI input. Oddly, if I reverse the cables, it seems to work. Same two cables - just switching which one is connected to the Apple TV and which is connected to the projector. (I need the length to get to where my projector is positioned. Though I might be able to get by with a 30 ft. cable if length might be the issue.)
Anyway I think it must have something to do with the HDMI handshake or the lenth of the cables but don't know enough about it and have no idea why switching which cable comes first would fix the problem.

Ok,  I will ask the question in another way... My apple tv has one hdmi, and it goes to my hd projecter.. But projecter has no speakers, and as a result I've no sound at the moment. I am looking for a clear direction to go in, to solve lack the of any sound.. My only option seems to be, using the optical out from the apple tv.. I don't have  any equipment with this conecter. And I've never used optical before..   If i buy an, optical to twin phono converter and then I can plug into a large powered speaker I've got in my living room. And I will have big sound easily..?? Do I have any other reasonable options for optical enabled speakers, or AirPlay speakers or something simple I'm not aware of that will give me sound easily.. I don't want a messy 5:1 system, my house is very tidy, and I want to keep it that way. .  Only having this optical out is frustrating, and I need to get my head round the options I have.   Anyone understand from experience how to use the optical apple tv out.  Also, not  using anything but apple tv, no dvds, or tv , just apple tv and my ipad.. Is very quiet in my home right now though.  Ric

  • How do I connect Apple TV and surround sound to my projector?

My current set up is that I have a projector connected to my Blu-Ray player. My surround sound speakers connect to my Blu-Ray player. They all came in the box together and the speaker wires all go into the Blu-Ray. Everything works perfectly.
However now I have bought an Apple TV and although I can play it through the projector, the sound is only through the projector and not the surround sound. I tried plugging the Apple TV in the HDMI in the projector and then connecting the Apple TV to the Blu-Ray via optical cable, but that didn't work.
In the back of the projector there is 1 HDMI port and an audio port but no optical port
In the back of the Blu-Ray, you have the speakers, the HDMI, the audio in and the optical port.
How can I connect everything so that I can use my Apple TV with surround sound?

The manual doesn't say anything an optical port on the BD ?

  • How can I connect Apple TV to iMac with ethernet

AppleCare told me to plug the Apple TV into the iMac using ethernet to transfer the iTunes content faster with less glitches.  But how do I see the Apple TV screen on my iMac to configure it???  When I connect Apple TV using ethernet, nothing appears on the iMac screen.

This only applies if you have a first generation Apple TV. Also I hope you have a router and are not connecting the ATV directly to the iMac.
Usually I sync my First Generation Apple TV wirelessly, but sometimes I'll have some huge media files I want to sync on it which can take a long time. In those cases all you do is connect your Apple TV via ethernet cable to the same router your iMac is connected to. Don't worry about it not being connected to a tv because all you are going to do is SYNC your Apple TV. If you do not see your Apple TV in iTunes, turn off the Apple TV, and quit iTunes. Then turn on the Apple TV first, wait a minute and then start iTunes. Once iTunes sees the Apple TV, manage your content, then sync it.
Once the Apple TV has completed its sync, quit iTunes. Unplug your Apple TV, and then put the device back by the TV you want to enjoy the content on.
I have done such a thing a few times and it works flawlessly.

  • How do I get Apple TV2's "Computers" to display my computer ??

How do I get my computer to display on the Apple TV2 menu in the Computers category ??  I have homesharing turned on in iTunes and Apple TV2 using the same login name and password.  Is it a firewall problem ?  The other areas of Apple TV2 are working.  Strange, any thoughts ??

Unfortunately I don't know much about PCs.
The ports needed by the Apple TV are 53, 80, 123, 443 and 3689 (TCP) and 5353 (UDP)

  • How do i connect apple tv

Tried unsuccessfully to connect Apple TV.  Worked fine before I upgraded my Comcast service about 5 months ago and I only recently tried to use it again. I coincidentally have lost the cable signal to my television.

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
I'm assuming you mean that something is already using your single HDMI port. Two options:
    Get an HDMI switch
The second is a little more extreme, but worth mentioning if ever you've considered going down that route. Most modern home theatre systems have multiple HDMI inputs which will do the same as a switch, but also give you access to multitrack audio.

  • How to connect Apple TV to an older TV?

I used to connect my iPad to the TV through a specific lead which had the red/yellow/white inputs (sorry - not sure of the technical term!) and that worked really well - when I lost my iPad and replaced with the newer version, this lead would no longer work and only gave me audio through the TV.  Therefore I was considering using the Apple TV, but our TV is quite old (around 8 years).  It works perfectly well so I don't really want to replace it.  It seems our TV does not have the connections needed to use Apple TV.  In our house we have a full Airport Mac network (plus MacBook Pro & iMac) so I think everything else is ok, just not the TV...
I've taken a photo of the connections on the front of the TV (below), on the back of the TV are the usual red/yellow/white options (it was too dark back there to take the photo!).
Can anyone give me any suggestions on how to set this up - or do I need to face the fact that our TV needs to be replaced...?
Thanks to you all in advance!

This can be done - I've just connected an Apple TV 3 to my 12-year-old Samsung with good results and some limitations.
What you're showing in your picture is composite video with left & right audio. You can get HDMI to composite converters; assuming a decent converter, you'll get a picture and sound. But - with reduced quality - composite is the lowest quality of video connection available (becquse it squeezes the video into one of the 3 connectors)
Have a look at your TV's manual and see whether there are any other types of connector, possibly at the back (many TVs have loads of odd conenctions round the back).
    Possible options are :
SCART (more common on European devices,so maybe not on yours)
DVI (not very common, but my old TV has DVI, so yours might)
Component video (splits the video into three channels, so you end up with 5 connections - 3 for video and 2 for audio)
If your TV isn't HD, the picture won't be perfect. If your TV *is* HD, then there should be an HDMI connector - Panasonics often have them at the back.
    Hope that helps

  • Connecting apple tv2 to a projector, but need to use optical from apple tv to connect to something, to get sound.. What do I buy

Ive got an apple tv, and a new hd projecter. I've now got a huge lovely picture on the wall, but I've zero sound.... The projector has no output for sound, and is conected by hdmi...which leaves me with one option. Using the optical out from apple tv, now i have no idea.  Will this optical output work when hdmi is sending sound to projector ?  What I need is the best option to use optical out.. I would have prefered a simple phono out, and then I can plug into a big active speaker im using in the room, I owne nothing with optical connections... So what do buy ?  Ric
