How do I connect my ancient G3 to the internet?

Hi. I need to get online with my old Powerbook G3 Series running Mac OS 8.1. Internet connection would be via a Motorola SB5100, or the PC that's currently connected to it. Can it be done? Otherwise what are the options to connect to the internet? Thanks for your help.

the modem sees the mac but I get error messages from the browser.
What did the browser report?
According to my modem's manual I should be able to use both the USB and the Ethernet connections at the same time, but maybe my ISP has a way to prevent this?
There is also a line about that not all service providers support multiple user service. It is not clear to me whether or not (for example) double IP addresses are needed from the ISP in order to handle two computers (one Ethernet and one USB), or if the modem contains some kind of routing arrangement. You may want to check this with your ISP. Do you have access to an external router?
I have tried disconnecting the USB cable to my other PC, restarting the modem and the Mac but still nothing.
Have you been using USB or Ethernet for the PC connection earlier?
Perhaps you could try to disconnect (power off) the modem for an hour or so, and then try with only the PowerBook.

I don't have a DSL or cable modem to access the Internet ... just a mobile WiFi (there is no cable available at our house and the mobile WiFi is our only option). How do I connect my Time Capsule to the Internet via the mobile WiFi?

    LOL!!
I am in Australia and the ISP... I think both the main ones would fit your description to a T.. big T in particular.
Your router is really unsuitable.. if it is only wireless and no ethernet.. just buy an ethernet one.
Do a search on ebay.. 3g router.
But you can get the TC to join a wireless network.
It is a non-standard setup that Apple will not support.. the option is hidden.
If you are on Lion download the 5.6 utility. Go to the wireless set up page and hold down the option key whilst selecting wireless mode.. a new option, join will appear. You can then put in the ssid and passkey of the 3g router.
But please note the end result of this setup..
very slow speed. The TC is now a second wireless hop from your clients.. this will halve the speed.
In this mode the ethernet are deactived.. for reasons only Apple know, they decided you should not use ethernet when doing this.

Thanks for replying. The plan you have it would be an additional charge to add the hotspot feature. It's not free with the Nationwide plan. You would need to add the feature online at www.verizonwireless.com/myverizon

  • How do I connect my MacBook pro to the Internet through the 3G server on my iPhone?

Does anyone know how to connect my MacBook pro to the Internet through the 3G server on my iPhone?

There is a service called Personal Hotspot that uses your iPhone's connection to share with other devices. You will need to sign up for this service through your carrier. Good luck

  • How do I connect my time capsule to the internet wirelessly

I recently moved to a house where the internet is provided wielessly. So I don't have access to the modem to hook up my Time capsule. Is there away I can hook it up with out connecting it to a modem? If so how might I go about doing so?

Go to the wireless area of the airport setup.. and select wireless mode but hold down the option key.
A new option will present, join wireless network.
This is really poor way to run the TC though. It will stop ethernet working. And you will double hop wireless to the TC.
Would it be possible to have the TC standalone and plugged by ethernet into the computer.. that would be a much better solution. or for the time being just use external drive..

  • How can I connect to multiple Macs over the internet?

I have forwarded the ports on my Airport Extreme as follows:
10.0.1.3 being assigned to my Mac Mini.
I also have a MacBook Pro at home I would like access to which has the 10.0.1.4 reserved/assigned. I cannot connect to it because the port forwarding points to the Mac Mini, and it doesn't allow me to create another rule since those ports are already being used by that first entry. How do I go about having the option to connect to either one of the two computers at home when I'm at work using Apple Remote Desktop?

it's not really a confirmed limitation of ARD, ARD is not designed to work outside of a LAN
it's designed for system admins to manage macs remotely while on the same LAN
but you want to use it outside of your LAN, you can by using VPN
VPN gives you remote secure access to your LAN
you will appear to be connected to your LAN
so you can do most things as you would if you were actually on your LAN
ARD does not facilitate a VPN connection
you'd connect using a VPN connection to your LAN then start ARD, ARD will behave just as it would if you were on the LAN
VPN client is built into OSX, system preferences, network, add choose VPN connection
You'd need a VPN server such as OSX server on your LAN
and configure any firewalls, routers etc to allow incoming VPN to connect to your server
You'd also need either a fixed external IP address and external domain name or use dynamic DNS setup
    you could also try logmein

  • How do i connect my powerbook G3 to the internet?

I recieved a Mac Powerbook G3 to take with me to iran to give to a less fortunate family but i have no idea how to connect to the internet (for updates and general usage) as the os is really old (10.2)
can somebody please give me step by step instructions on how to connect to the internet, either via wifi or ethernet or dial up if thats the only option.
    Thanks

It depends on which PowerBook G3 you have. The early ones had Ethernet and a 33.6K modem. The last one had fast Ethernet, a 56K modem, and an internal slot for an AirPort wifi card, which may be installed.
I can't remember exactly how 10.2 worked, but in System Preferences there should be a Network pane where you can configure the Ethernet and wifi. In most cases you can just leave them at default set to DHCP and it will connect to any Internet coffee shop or library.

  • How do I connect a PowerBook G4 to the internet?

    I have a 2003 Powerbook G4 with OSX 10.2.3 Jaguar, 1GHz, 867 MHz.
In the past I have upgraded the OSX to 10.4 but I have recently done an erase and reinstall from the original CD.
I now want to connect to the internet. The machine recognises my ISP router but when I try to enter the password I get  a message saying it is incorrect .
The information given on About This Mac says:
    Airport
    0x8863<Up,Broadcast,b6,Running,Simplex,Multicast>
(NB I do not have this problem when connecting from my new MBP).
    Please can anyone help?

  • How do I connect my Airport Extreme to the Internet, It will not connect

I just got roadrunner internet and switched from dsl. I've been using the modem that came with dsl, but now I'm trying to use the Airport Extreme. My Imac does have the airport card, and I am able to get it to work with the airtunes to work with my stereo speakers, but I can't get a wireless internet connection. I've tried going through the set-up and I still can't get the internet connection to work. Can someone help me set it up?

I'm a little cofused. Do you have an express or an extreme? Or both? In the case of either the solo exrpress or the extreme, they need something to access the internet with. It would need a source, most likely to be ethernet connected to the modem. Unless you have a modem that also acts as a wireless router or some such concoction. You would then have a wireless router to give your iMac a wireless signal.

  • How do I connect my airport Express to the internet connection of my Macbook Pro without an ethernet cable?

I would like to use my Airport Express (802.11n) to provide audio in another room for a pair of powered speakers, however the iTunes remote software for Android requires (for some dumb reason) an internet connection so I can't control iTunes
So my computer is connected to a cabelmodem via ethernet and the Express has established a network connection with the computer
How do i give the Airport internet access without an ethernet cable?

To share your Internet connection from your laptop, select 'Sharing' in 'System Preferences' and enable 'Internet Sharing'.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH13855
You will need to set a WEP key. You may need to root the system do some things at the command line. I recommend against that.
Laptops don't work well as routers but it is possible.
Hook up the AirPort express to the laptop using an Ethernet cable and configure with the AirPort utility as if you are setting up a print server or base station. The Android should see the AirPort Express after that.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4587
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2312443
This might work better if you used the AirPort Express as a base station instead of trying to use the laptop as a base station. Then your Android would have Internet access.

  • How do I connect my 27" iMac to the HDMI port of my LCD TV ?

How do I connect my 27"iMac to the HDMI Port of my LCD TV ?

    I have the 22" imac
beside it I have an 24" dell monitor
I used a miniDisplayport->DVi converter in the TB port of the imac
thats the best performance because DVI like Displayport are both digital interfaces
    same deal with hdmi really
so you need a miniDisplayport to dvi or hdmi depending on the inputs on your tv
and a cable and thats it

Normally, you just connect the monitor to the MacBook using a VGA adaptor that you can buy from an Apple Store.  Now try System Preferences > Displays > Detect Displays.  You should now be able to select a display mode for the monitor.  If it still doesn't work, then I'd check that everything is properly connected.  I've had problems with colours disappearing due to a faulty connection in the VGA adaptor.

  • Don't know how to fix this - status says no internet connection, yet I'm on the internet.

So this is a weird one.
I got this new MacBook Air and the WiFi started up without a hitch.  I had finished migrating from my old computer to my new one and all of a sudden the status bar signal went from full bars to an exclamation point.  The info says Alert: No Internet Connection, yet I am on the internet at full speed.  Even though I have restarted several times, the status in the status bar remains the same.  Since internet is running smoothly, part of me says to forget about it, but it bothers me.
Does anyone have an idea on how to fix this issue without ruining my internet connectivity on this computer?
    Thanks!

Migration may have corrupted the network preferences ..
Open the Finder. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
Type or copy paste the following:
    /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration
Click Go then move all the files in the SystemConfiguration folder to the Trash.
See if that makes a difference.
Your Mac will generate a new SystemConfiguration folder for you.

  • After updating to 4.3 I can't connect to wi-fi because the "internet speeds are too slow". How much speed does this require?

After updating to 4.3 I can't connect to wi-fi because the "Internet speeds are too slow". So what speed does it need?

I called tech support and I got the same **** canned response, backup and reset to factory settings.  Yeah right!  Everything was fine until Verizon shoved the software update down my throat.  I finally unchecked the box in Wi-Fi settings for auto network switch.  However, I still get the "Your Internet connection is unstable" warning no matter what Wi-Fi connection I hit.
In a related story, I received a new or refurbished phone as my original SIII had AC/charging connection issues.  I called probably three times to attempt to back up my data, went into two stores in attempts to have them transfer the information over, and all were too incompetent and inept to assist me.  Only when talking to someone about this Wi-Fi issue, did someone actually know how to back up everything.  Of course by this time, I had to send the new phone back because Verizon charged me $400 before I got everything squared away.  What a colossal waste of my time!
