I have a cable modem for my Time Capsule.  Do I need a separate cable modem for my Airport Express?  (I'm using it to "extend" my network and also for Air Play.)

No, you connect to your Time Capsule wirelessly to "Extend" the network..

  • Can i connect to the ethernet cable on a 2nd airport express

i have a wireless network setup from my cable box with an airport express (thru ethernet, of course).
i have a SECOND AE extending the network.
can i connect my roku box to the 2nd AE's ethernet port? will it make any difference? (as opposed to the roku box, used for netflix, picking up it's signal wirelessly).
trying to make this work as best i can, since my TV is not close to the internet connection...

can i connect my roku box to the 2nd AE's ethernet port?
    Yes
will it make any difference? (as opposed to the roku box, used for netflix, picking up it's signal wirelessly).
Probably not, since the AirPort Express is picking up its signal via wireless.
The same signal just appears at the Ethernet port. If anything, the signal at the Ethernet port will have a bit less bandwidth than the wireless signal since the Express must convert from wireless to Ethernet...and you always lose something in the conversion process.
Normally, you would use the Ethernet port if a device did not have wireless capability.

  • Connecting Motorola SB6121 Cable Modem and AirPort Extreme

I moved into a new house a couple of days ago so of course the first thing that I needed to do was get the home wireless up and running. My ISP is through Comcast. I purchased my own cable modem (Motorola SB6121) instead of renting and used my own AirPort Extreme as the wireless router.
First, if you're purchasing your own cable modem, you will need to contact your ISP and provide them with the HFC MAC ID on the cable modem. Once you've gone through the motions, you will be able to connect your Mac (in my case Macbook) directly to the modem via ethernet cable and access the internet.
    Issue:
When I connected the SB6121 to the AE, I could connect wirelessly to the AE, but I did not have access to the internet. So, basically the SB6121 and the AE were not talking to each other despite being physically connected via ethernet cable.
    Solution:
After days of searching for online answers and forums (and trying different solutions) I was able to successfully get everything up and running. Make sure that you have 2 ethernet cables available.
    Here are the steps.
I restored my AE to factory settings just to keep everything simple. Here are instructions: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3728 Once you've restored your AE, make sure that both the AE and the cable modem are unplugged from their power sources.
Plug in the power to the SB6121.
Connect your SB6121 directly to your laptop via Ethernet cable. Test to ensure that you have internet accessibility by going to any website.
Remove the ethernet cable from your laptop and plug it into the "internet in" jack in the back of the AE.
    Power up the AE.
Connect your laptop to the back of the AE using ethernet cable #2.
Launch a browser. You should now be able to successfully connect to any website.
Assuming that you reset your AE to factory settings, it should just be broadcasting the generic "Airport Extreme" SSID. Disconnect the ethernet cable and connect using wireless to the SSID. Launch a browser and you should be able to connect to the internet.
You can now use the AirPort Utility to configure the AirPort settings.
I assume that this solution would work with any of the base stations.

I was having the exact same issue tonight.  Just purchased the AE Model A1408 and haven't been able to maintain an internet connection on my iMac whenever I tried hooking it up via the Airport Utility application.  So after I had the SB6121 connected to the AE and the AE connected to my PC with no luck, I then went to the Network icon in System Preferences.  Clicked on "Assist me...".  Then clicked on "Diagnostics..." and followed the directions which basically had me first power down the SB6121 modem and power it back up.  Then I powered down the AE router and powered it back up.  At that point I was now getting an internet connection.  I then took my ipad 2 and went to the Wi-Fi settings and noticed it was asking me to setup a network through my AE.  I selected that and went through the simple steps to set up the network and password and now it all works.  I am a novice so don't ask me why but I now get a green solid light on my AE.  I can connect other devices wirelessly. I can still access the internet on my iMac.  For whatever reason, using the Airport Utility on the iMac doesn't work in my case and using my ipad to set up the wireless network did the job.

  • E2000 keeps losing internet connection on Motorola SBV5121 Cable Modem

I bought a E2000 last week. Used my wired PC to setup which failed as it said internet connection not detected.
tried reinstalling after powercycling the modem and routers but still it could not detect the internet.
I used my friends macbook pro to setup router wirelessless and the E2000 + internet connected successfully.
I connected my PC using ethernet and it worked bingo! Shortlived as in 2 days again no internet was detected. Now i have tried everything but no avail. My friend out of town so cannot try reinstalling it using Mac book.
Any known issues with the cable modem and Linksys E2000?
    Thanks
    Akshay

Bypass the router and connect your computer directly to the modem.
Make sure that you can access the Internet when you connect the computer directly to the modem.
If you can access the Internet through the modem then try to configure the router manually.
Connect the modem to the Internet port and computer to Ethernet port on the router. Press and hold the reset button on the router for 30 seconds. Release the reset button and wait for 30 seconds. Now try to reconfigure the router manually.
Follow this link to configure the router with CABLE Internet service.

  • DSL to Cable Modem switch - now Airport express doesn't work

I just switched from DSL to Cable and now connecting to the internet via my Airport express doesn't work. It's fine direct connecting via ethernet.
Is there a known issue? I've tried various things but no dice.
Are my Airport expresses now married to the older modem?
    Any help would be appreciated.

Okay I got a new Airport extreme since there was a chance that the new modem and the expresses weren't 100% compatible and the Extreme worked almost out of the box.
Truth is, I might have just had to hold down the reset buttons on the expresses longer so that they would revert to the manufacturer's default and they might have become functional since I did that later and my old expresses are now connected to the home network.
For anyone else with this issue, before giving up or if you don't need an excuse to buy an extreme, hold that airport reset button in a good two minutes before and then another two during the plug-in and you might get lucky.
    Thanks.

  • Remoting from Work?:  Cable Modem Vonage Router Airport Express Computer

    Hey all.
I'm trying to set up my network at home so that I may connect to my home network while at work. My setup is in my subject line. I can "remote" local computer to local computer just fine within my LAN, however, when I try to connect from work, I have no such luck. I would assume this is because I have not set up port forwarding correctly, yet all attempts thus far have failed. I have tried to simultaneously open particular ports on all my devices, yet from the outside, the ports still don't seem to be open for me. Can anyone offer any suggestions to enable me to remote in to home from work?
I realize that I have probably been pretty vague on details, so if there are any specifics you need, let me know.

Alright, so I "think" that I configured the Airport Utility properly. I obtained my external router IP address. Remote Desktop is enabled on my Mac. I forwarded the port within my router (Vonage). When I try to connect to my Mac from work, I still get a message that it is unable to connect. What could I be doing wrong?
And of course, I can connect remotely (local computer to local computer ) within my LAN just fine.

  • Connection an Iomega Network Hard Drive to an Airport Express Network

I am trying to hook up my hard drive to my network. My network consists of an airport express, which I use as my base station hooked up to my cable modem and another airport express which acts as a wireless relay station. My Iomega Ethernet Network hard drive (300Gb) is hooked up to the Ethernet port of the remote base station.
When I initially installed the drive and ran the Iomega discovery software I found the drive. I then transferred data to the drive and then closed the connection.
I then installed on my computer the apple programs Ilife and Iwork, which should not have an effect I would imagine. However, now when I try to run the discovery program it crashes. I have reinstalled the program and it still crashes. I also don't see the drive on my network. However, if I use the netstat program I can see the drive on my router table, it has an IP address and I can ping it. However, I don't see it when I browse the network.
Is there any way to connect to the drive without using the Iomega discovery program and does anyone know if there is any known conflicts with the discovery software and ilife or iwork.
    Thanks
    William
    Powerbook G4 17"   Mac OS X (10.4.4)   2 Airport Express stations

By the way, I have managed to figure out the problem. It turns out that the discovery software that comes with the Iomega network hard drive does not appear to work. After calling customer service at Iomega, they directed me to look at the routing table in network utility to get the IP address assigned to the network drive. Then using my internet browser to login to the drive by entering the IP address as the URL. This worked and there was a html page on the hard drive that allowed me configure the drive.

Switched from DSL to cable modem. My Airport light won't turn green. Keeps blinking orange. No wireless now and can't connect to more than one computer! ?????

    Hmmmm.
If you reset the AirPort Extreme by holding in the reset button for 9-10 seconds and then releasing, the AirPort should be back in default settings which would allow mutliple computers to connect to the LAN ports on the AirPort.
Power off the cable modem for now and leave it off at least 15 minutes.
With the AirPort Extreme still powered on, hold in the rest button on the back for 9-10 seconds and release. Allow a full minute for the AirPort Extreme to restart to a slow, blinking abmer light.
Then, power off the AirPort Extreme.
Check to make sure that the Ethernet cable from the modem is connected to the WAN "O" port on the AirPort Extreme.
After the modem has been powered off for at least 15 minutes, power it up and let it run for 5 minutes by itself.
Now, power up the AirPort Exteme and let it run for 2-3 minutes
Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
Connect an Ethernet cable from your Mac to one of the LAN <-> ports on the AirPort Express
Click on the AirPort Exteme, then click Continue to follow the guided setup tp configure the AirPort Extreme.  You can use the same wireless network name, password, etc that you used before, or set up a new name and password, etc.

  • Hi can i connect hifi digital and my home wifi to airport express.

Hi i have been thinking about adding my hifi  and sony digital TV to my home network which consist of three mac computers and has a wifi internet connection. What are the advantages of using airport express over bluetooth hardware. Using the male single plug on the airport express what is the sound clarity like from my Iphone. At present it is not very good using earphone jack on my Iphone 4 to Hifi. Will it improve with airport express. What is the difference between airport express and extreem. Lots of questions maybe a few answers. thankyou Paul

Re Airport Express.  I use one of these to play Apple Lossless files through my hifi.  The stereo connector on the Express is capable of both analogue and digital output. To use the analogue output - which is the same from standard stereo equipment like CD Tape players, and iPhone headphone connector, use the standard plug with the appropriate connectors for your amplifier. To use the digital output, you will need to use a toslink cable - AND your amplifier will need to have a digital in port. The toslink will need to have a connector that fits inside the connector on the Express ( it is a bit longer than the usual stereo / headphone jack and allows the laser light inside the Express to shine down the cable to the amp - which may have a slightly different connector and require an attachment to the end of the tosling cable. If your amp does not have a digital connector - my does not - then you could purchase a stand alone DAC that takes the laser light and converts it to analogue output.  These can vary in price substantially but MAY givea  better sound - depending on the quality of the DAC and the quality of the amp. The Express has a built in DAC that is used if you use the standard stereo cable, and by-passed if you use the toslink cable.
    Quality
The difference in quality will depend on the type of files you are using, your amp and your speakers.
MP3 files may not sound any different, but Apple Lossless or FLAC files which are much higher quality MAY - or MAY NOT - sound better using toslink cable and the DAC compared to using the analogue output and standard stereo cable from the Express.
Personally, I use Apple Lossless files from iTunes and the analogue output from the Express into Rega Amp and Royd Speakers and I'm very pleased with the sound.  I have considered using an stand alone DAC but feel the extra expense is not worth it in my case. You could start with the same setup and see how it sounds to you. The quality is difinitely very good and you can add the toslink cable and DAC later. The latest Airport Express may contain an even better DAC than earlier versions so may sound even better.
If you have an iPhone, you can use Apples Remote app to control iTunes on your Mac, to choose music, change track, change volume etc. This all works over the wifi network. You can also stream music directly from your iPhone - or your friend's iPhone - to the Express over the wifi network.
I have my MacBook Pro in my office space, 15 metres away in the next room, my Express and stereo in the living room and my iPhone in my hand on the couch and I'm delighted with the flexibility and the sound.
I have no experience with bluetooth for sound.

  • HT4259 How can I extend a wireless network from a 2Wire modem by usingan Airport Express? Years ago I could do this just by plugging in the (old) Airport Express. TIA Travelmonger

How can I extend a wirelss network from a 2Wire modem using an Airport Express? Some years ago using the old Express I was able to do so simply by plugging on the Express witha minimum of tweaking. Still the same?
    TIA
    Travelmonger

    Still the same?
    Unfortunately, no.
Apple's newer "Extend a wireless network" feature was designed to only work with other Apple products, so it would be extremely unlikely that it would work with a 2-Wire device if you plan to extend using wireless only.
If you plan to connect the AirPort Express to the 2-Wire device using a wired Ethernet connection, the Express can be configured to provide more wireless coverage that way.

That's what I thought too, then I bought this USB Ethernet adapter and on the package it says :
"Compatible only with MacBook Air Computers"... so I am not sure if I should open it.
When it was originally released it only worked with the MacBook Air which came with a special version of OS X that supported this adapter. Apple seem to have since built this support in to versions of OS X 10.6 and later for all Macs.
If you have an older version of OS X e.g. 10.3 to 10.5 then an unofficially driver is available here http://www.sustworks.com/sb_site/downloads.html
There are also third-party USB to Ethernet adapters with their own drivers like this one http://www.kanexlive.com/usb3lan
