How do I consolidate all of my photos to one location

I have been using iPhoto 6 on my MBP and had it reference all of my photos on an external harddrive. Then I started importing new photos directly from my camera, and I believe it saved them on the my local hard drive somewhere. So now I believe I have original photos in two places.
I am getting a new iMac this week with iPhoto 8 on it, is there away I can prepare for it by consolidating all of my photos into on location and not loose all of my iPhoto albums and tags?
Second question, should I just in the future pull the photos off to a folder from my camera and then import them into iPhoto?

Natalie
What exactly is an "alias" in the context of iPhoto? What is the usefulness of this?
By default, iPhoto manages the files when they are imported - they are copied to the iPhoto Library. However, some people prefer to manage the files themselves, so along the way it became possible for iPhoto to reference files - that is not copy them to the iPhoto Library on import. (iPhoto Preferences -> Advanced -> Uncheck 'Copy Files...') In this scenario, instead of having picture file in iPhoto Library Folder / Originals / you have an alias pointing to the actual file.
The down side of this is that importing and deleting files become multistep operations instead of single step ones, plus - and more importantly, migrating to an external HD or a new computer can be much more complex. There are a couple of open threads on the forum right now from folks trying find a simple way to change to a managed library from a referenced one. There is no such way. I have yet to see a good reason to run an iPhoto Library in referenced mode unless you're using more than one Photo organiser.
Also, I was getting quite familiar and comfortable with the last version of iPhoto, and I'm now all screwed up with iPhoto 8. Why can I not manually arange photos within the event folders? I used to be able to drag them to the placement that I most desired in a second. Now, the best I can do is to take an seemingly unnecessary amount of time to individually "flag" photos, move them to different events, unflag them, and start all over. Is there any way to allow for manual drag and drop within "events"?
Events are a really crude form of organisation. They are strictly based on time. Change to Photos view and go View -> Event Titles: Now you can easily drag and drop between events and go View -> Sort Photos -> Manually
Lastly, I never quite got my head fully wrapped around the differentiation among folders, smartfolders, and albums.
An album is a collection of pics that you create - by drag and drop, for instance: My Cat Pictures
A Smart Album is an album created by iPhoto to match instructions you give: (File -> New Smart Album -> You can see the possible criterea). For instance, when I import pics I keyword them on a Who, What, Where basis. (The When is recorded with the pic automatically). Now When I tag a pic with my daughter's name it's added automatically to the Smart Album (Keyword > Is > My daughter's Name)
There are no Smart Folders in iPhoto.
A Folder is a collection of Albums, both or either 'dumb' and smart. (Folder: My Pets contains Album My Cat Pictures, My Dog Pictures)

  • How do I share all my files, photos etc.. on my wife's MAC?

How do I share all my LR photos on my wife's MAC - really having two users both able to change photos for their own use?

The only way I would recommend is to put the photos on an external HD, and also put the catalog file on the same external HD, and move that external HD back and forth between computers, and both of you work on the exact same catalog file.
    If that's not acceptable ...
Lightroom really wasn't meant as a multi-user tool, and the only other way I know to do this is kind of tedious and involves repeated manual operations.
If the photos are on a server, and you each have your own catalogs, then there's no problem with each user working on the photos independently on their own computer in their own Lightroom catalog. The problem comes in if you want to consolidate the changes made by the different users into one master catalog somehow. Then, for each change made, you need to combine the changes into the other catalog, and this can be done via File->Export as Catalog and then File->Import from Another Catalog. And then tomorrow when there are more changes, you have to do it again. And don't wind up in the situation where you accidentally forget to update a photo(s) like this, because then you have two catalogs that don't match.
Better you should look at software like Daminion which is designed to be multi-user. (Note: I have not used Daminion, and so I am not recommending or endorsing it, I am simply stating that it allows multi-user catalogs)

How are the images stored on your original iPad? Are they in the camera roll, in events downloaded using the camera connection kit, or are they in albums synced to your ipad from a computer?
If the photos are in the camera roll or in events downloaded from a camera, you can transfer them to your iMac and MBA by directly connecting the iPad using USB. Then you can download the photos to iPhoto like from a camera.
Only, if your photos have been synced to the iPad from a computer, you will have to save them first to the camera roll; then you can download them by connecting the iPad via USB.
What IOS version has your iPad?
For new photos you might consider using Photo Stream to transfer your photos between the devices.

Go to Settings>General>Reset and tap Erase All Content and Settings.  This will erase your phone.  Then you will go through the setup screens again as you did when your phone is new, and when given the option, select Restore from iCloud Backup.

  • How do I move all my ipad photos to icloud? .

How do I move all my ipad photos to icloud? Since the last software update none of my ipad pictures upload to the cloud. i just want to empty all the picture to the cloud and free up the ipad.

You turn iCloud Photo Library on in Settings > iCloud > Photos. However it doesn't "empty" the pictures to the cloud. The most you can do to free up space using iCloud is to turn on Optimize Storage to keep a smaller device-sized version of the photos on your iPad. See the quote below from iCloud Photo Library FAQ - Apple Support
Can I use iCloud Photo Library to save space on my device?
iCloud Photo Library automatically keeps all your photos and videos in the original, high-resolution version. Follow these steps to choose how you store your photos and videos on your device:
In iOS, tap Settings > iCloud > Photos or Settings > Photos & Camera, then select a storage setting.
In OS X, click Photos > Preferences > iCloud, then select a storage setting.
If you turn on Optimize [device] Storage, iCloud Photo Library will automatically manage the size of your library on your device, so you can make the most of your device's storage and access more photos than ever. All of your original, full-resolution photos and videos are stored in iCloud while device-size versions are kept on your device. You can download the original photos and videos over Wi-Fi or cellular when you need them.
If you turn on Download Originals, iCloud Photo Library will keep your original, full-resolution photos and videos in iCloud and on your device. Download Originals is the default setting for iOS devices with the free 5 GB storage plan and for all Mac devices.

Generally all you need to do is fill in an appropriate Album Artist. For more details see my article on Grouping Tracks Into Albums, in particular the topic One album, too many covers.

  • HT204053 I have just bought a new iPad but I can't see how I can sync all my iPhone photos that are stored on the iCloud onto my iPad. Can someone help?

I have just bought the new iPad but can't see how I would sync all my iPhone photos that are stored on iCloud onto my iPad. Can someone help?

Photos on the camera roll can be included in an icloud backup from an iOS device (if camera roll is turned on).  But getting the photos back from a backup is risky.  Many users have performed restore operations from a backup only to discover the photos were not returned.  icloud is primarily used to sync photos to other devices using photo stream - but only new photos taken after the stream is turned on in Settings>icloud will actually be synced, not old photos.
Settings>icloud>Storage & Backups>Manage Storage,  tap the device's name and on the next screen, be sure Camera Roll is turned on.
    IMPORTANT...
Photos should be regularly synced to a computer (like you store photos from a digital camera) using either USB via iTunes (on a mac use iPhoto or Aperture to move them to an album).  You can then sync the photos to the iPad.

  • How do I store all my old photos from my pc to iCloud?

I'm just transitioning to Apple products from a PC.  I have an iPhone and have purchased extra space in iCloud.  How do I move all my old photos from my PC to iCloud?  I can't seem to find instuctions anywhere.

iCloud will only store photos for 30 days, after which they are deleted. This is to give other devices enough time to download your photos.

Note: Photo Stream does not count against your iCloud storage space.

I only have one iTunes account.  The other day I made the mistake of downloading purchased songs and movies logged on another user account (Administrator) on the same computer.  How do I consolidate all my purchases in my preferred user account?

copy the songs that you downloaded as admin and put it somewhere you can access it from you're preferred account (usb stick / cd / shared folder / external hard drive) log into with you preferred user account and drag and drop the files on top of the itunes icon and they will be imported.
if you have a second computer you could use home sharing to move the music from admin itunes to the second computer and from the second computer to the preferred itununes
ps you can only connect 5 computers to you're itunes account so don't forget to de-autorise when you no-longer wand it.

  • HT201317 i have enabled photostream on my imac but only a small selection of old photos from my iphone have streamed through.  How do i get all the existing photos from both my iphone and ipad onto my iMac?

I have enabled photostream on my imac but only a small selection of old photos from my iphone have streamed through.  How do i get all the existing photos from both my iphone and ipad onto my iMac?

This usually happens because iCloud only keeps photo stream photos for 30 days (even though your last 1000 photos will remain on your phone until deleted).  When you enabled photo stream on your Mac you only received photo stream photos from the last 30 days.
To get older photos to your Mac, create a shared photo stream containing them and invite yourself as a subscriber (see http://help.apple.com/icloud/#mmc0cd7e99).  The be sure you check Shared Photo Streams in iPhoto>Preferences>Photo Stream.  You can then import them to your iPhoto library by opening the shared photo stream album in iPhoto, then going to Edit>Select All, Control-clicking on any of the selected photos and selecting Import.

Consolidate your files in the iTunes folder
You can consolidate all the files in your library in the iTunes folder—for example, to make it easier to move your library to a new computer.
Choose File > Library > Organize Library.
Select “Consolidate files.”Files remain in their original locations, and copies are placed in the iTunes folder.
To create folders (Music, Movies, TV Shows, Podcasts, Audiobooks, and so on) inside your iTunes folder, and place all your imported media files in the appropriate folders, select “Reorganize files in the folder ‘iTunes Media.’”
    Locate your iTunes files
    Do either of the following:
Find out where a file is stored: Select the item in iTunes, and choose File > Get Info. The path to the file is shown at the bottom of the Summary pane (next to Where).
Show the file in Windows Explorer: Select the song, and choose File > Show in Explorer.
