How do I consolidate music files from all the locations on my laptop where they currently exist?

My music files are located in at least four different places on my computer. I find them in c:/(user)/Music (all just stored in various folders outside the ITunes folder), in c:/(user)/Music/ITunes/ITunes Media/Music, in c:/(user)/ITunes/ITunes Music, and in c:/(user)/ITunes1/ITunes Media/Music. I think many are duplicated. How do I consolidate without painstakingly going through file by file? Win 8.1 brand new Dell laptop, 512 SSD.

Check your media folder is properly set to C:\Users\<User>\Music\iTunes\iTunes Media and then use File > Library > Organize Library > Consolidate files. This will however create copies of any files current stored outside the media folder which may be a problem on a smallish SSD drive. I have two scripts that could help you, Unconsolidated and ConsolidateByMoving. The first can make a playlist of all unconsolidated tracks, the second can consolidate a selection of tracks by moving them instead of copying.

  • How do I import music files from a flash drive to my iTunes library on my laptop

How can I import music files from a flash drive to my iTunes library? I put the flash drive into my laptop, selected " add file to library", selected the songs I wanted from the flash drive, and it looked like they were added as the names show under " recently added". Then I removed the flash drive from my laptop But when I select one of the songs and try to play it a message saying "the song could not be used because the original file could not be found. Would you like to locate it?"  So it seems the actual files did not transfer. What do I do? I have done this. With a cd in the past with nsomproble,.

Thank you!! This worked. It does seem there should be an easier way but this did work.
Dragging the files to "Automatically Add..." is pretty easy once you know where to look.  Just make sure iTunes is running when you do it; otherwise the files will just sit there until the next time you open iTunes.
(Interestingly, the way you originally tried to do would have worked fine except for one little detail:  you have to first go into Edit > Preferences > Advanced, and check the box for "Copy files..."  If that is not done, iTunes will reference the files on the flash drive, which of course are not accessible once the drive is removed, as you saw.)
Anyway, glad that all is now sorted.  Enjoy the music!

  • How do I move music files from the startup disc to iTunes in the other internal hard disk os 10.5.8?

How do I move music files from the startup disc to iTunes in the other internal hard disk os 10.5.8?
The music I want to move was in iTunes but is now just files. I had to reinstall a new iTunes and lost all my old music.
    Thank you!

That article is about using your iPod as an external hard drive, to move files from one computer to another computer.  It is not related to your question.
You can't use iTunes to move song files from iPod to computer, except for songs you purchased from the iTunes Store (and you can also re-download purchases).  However, there are third-party methods and utilities that can move song files from iPod to computer.  If you do a Google search on something like "ipod transfer," you should get some links.
Once the song files are on your current computer, add them to that computer's iTunes library by dragging the files (or folder containing the files) to the iTunes window.  After confirming everything is there (and fixing the data issue you mentioned) you can sync the iPod.  You may want to do a Restore on the iPod, if it might have a data corruption issue, which will erase the iPod's hard drive, re-install the latest software, and set it to defautl settings.

  • How do I transfer my songs from my old computer to my laptop? They are both the same iTunes account

How do I transfer my songs from my old computer to my laptop? They are both the same iTunes account.

These are two possible approaches that should work to move an existing iTunes library to a new computer.
    Method 1
Backup the library with this User Tip.
Restore the backup to your new computer using the same tool used to back it up.
Deauthorize the old computer if you no longer want to access protected content on it.
Keep your backup up-to-date in future.
    Method 2
Connect the two computers to the same network. Share your <User's Music> folder from the old computer and copy the entire iTunes library folder into the <User's Music> folder on the new one. Again, deauthorize the old computer if no longer required.
Both methods should give the new computer a working clone of the library that was on the old one. As far as iTunes is concerned this is still the "home" library for your devices so you shouldn't have any issues with iTunes wanting to erase are reload.
I'd recommend method 1 since it establishes an ongoing backup for your library.
Should you be in the unfortunate position where computer has died with no backup then see Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device.

how do i stop my itunes from changing the location of my itunes media.  i have it saved on a external HD and it keeps changing back to my local drive with out being told

No, an external drive will not always be mounted. If the drive goes to sleep, it can unmount, or it may unmount for other reasons. As Chris said, confim that the drive is mounted and active before launching iTunes.

  • How do I move music folders with individual music files from windows 7 to itunes folder so that they are recognizable and playble?

How do I move music folders with individual music files from windows 7 to the itunes library so the files are usable in itunes?

All of the following programs should work with Vista.
Yamipod. This is a free program that transfers music from iPod back to the computer. However, it does not transfer playcounts/ratings etc.
Another free program is Pod Player.
    SharePod is also freeware.

  • How can i transfer music files from my PC to my Mac?

I had a windows XP and all my music files were in the Windows Media Player! Is there any way i can transfer them to my Mac Leopard?

It depends what format they are in. If they are MP3s then simply grab them all up and copy them to a Flash drive (or an external HD), and then drag-drop onto iTunes on the Mac (or Add to Library and navigate to the files).
If they are WMA then they have to be converted to an iTunes-friendly format, e.g. MP3. If you already have an app on the PC then use that, else there are apps for Mac that will do it - I believe one of them is called Switch Converter.
But don't worry, your music files will travel from PC to Mac fine.

  • How do I transfer music files from a portable hard drive to my current iTunes library?

Last year I moved from a desk top to a Mac. Geek squad helped me save my previous iTunes libarary to an external hard drive. I'm not a sophisticated user by any means, and I cannot figure out how to copy the music files from the external drive into my current iTunes library on my new Mac. Help, please.

Drag the files to the internal drive and from there into the iTunes application window.

  • Re-import music files from external library location (i.e. from archive)

    This is maddening as ___
I keep my iTunes files on a drive external to my OS drive for safe keeping. I did a clean install of the OS, backed up the library from iTunes beforehand, and now I can't reimport the library with creating a whole new library and duplicating the files. So I know how to...
    1) Set the music location to another drive - not a problem
    2) When I import the XML library I get my play lists, BUT I only get the message my other music cannot be found. Importing the library itself does nothing. I've also tried moving the library (from the original, with its XML file) and I get all the songs and preferences but none of the songs can be found - grrrr!
    3) So, how do I import the music into iTunes, and leave it on the remote drive. (iTunes always wants to create a new directory and copy it there it seems and since I don't have enough room to just let it make a whole new 48GB directory....
    4) Why is this SO difficult - it is consistently a sore point with this one thing (I otherwise love all my other apple goodies for 10+ years, but this...ugh!) Any tools people know of?
    Thanks

The 'iTunes Music Library.xml' file is not used by iTunes, but created by iTunes so it can be used by other programs.
If you still have the 'iTunes Library' file from before the clean install, putting it in the iTunes folder should reveal your library.
Read more about the library files here:
What are the iTunes library files?
You can also use the .xml file to restore the library.
Just set the folder on your EHD which contains all the music as 'iTunes Music folder location' in the preferences.
Then run iTunes (with the empty library), choose 'Import...' from the File menu and navigate to the .xml file.
Your library will be restored, no new folder, no dupes.
Before posting this message, I tested the procedure on my 'test' account, on which I keep a very small iTunes Library (about 10 songs), to 'mess up' and test certain procedures.
I moved (consolidated) the library to a 'testtunes' folder on an EHD, trashed the 'iTunes Library' file and used the 'iTunes Music Library.xml' file to restore the library. No dupes, no new folder. Worked just fine.
    Hope this helps.

  • How do I copy music files from an iPod 5thGen to a new iTunes installation?

My old WinXP computer crashed & burned (literally). I installed iTunes (11.2.2.3) on my new Win7 PC. How do I copy all my music from my 5th Gen iPod into the new iTunes? My music collection contains only MP4 files ripped from my CD collection--nothing purchased from the iTunes Store. I located a folder named Apple on one of my old flash drives which contains a subfolder named iTunes Music. That folder contains subfolders for each of my original CDs with MP4s for all the tracks. Could I use those files to restore my music to iTunes?

If is a MicroSD card you'll need a MicroSD to SD card adapter. Something like this.
Once you have one of those just insert it into the SD card slot on your Mac then open a Finder window and select all the images and press Command + c to copy then go to the folder you want to put them in and select it and press Command + v to paste to that folder.

  • How to I remove music files from my computer through Itunes?

I had to reinstall itunes and create a whole new library. All my music is kept on an external hard drive which I keep plugged into my laptop, and Itunes reads the files from that. Before I had to reinstall, when I tried to delete a file, a pop up would ask me if I'd like to remove it from my computer as well as my library. This is no longer happening. All I get now is just a warning asking me if I'm sure I want to delete from the library. What do I do to fix this???? I have a lot of music I need to go through and clean up and I really need this option.

Ok..got it thanks! But, that leads me to my next question. I have over 140GB of music on an external hard drive that I want in my library. I know I can set the media folder to that external drive, but when I add the songs to my library, it would copy the files into that folder and not just move them meaning I'd have double the files on my drive? Is there a way to set it so it just transfers the files directly to the media folder and keeps them there?
Drag the file into the "Automatically Add to iTunes" folder, which can be found in your iTunes Media folder.  iTunes will add the file to your library and will immediately move it to an Artist/Album folder and you will end up with only a single copy.  Try it now with one file so you can see how it works, before doing larger batches.
