How do I control a first generation airport express with 10.8.2?

How do I control a first generation airport express with 10.8.2?
I have an old airport express that one of my machines running mountain lion will not support.  If I upgrade all of my systems to mountain lion, is there any way I can still control and configure the airport express?

You may need Airport Utility v. 5.6

It does work with Mountain Lion.

Hi guys, recently had the same issue. You require an older version of Airport Utility to configure the older Airport Express. It can be found here.

  • Can my first generation airport express be used with airplay using iOS 7.1.2? It stopped working after one of the big iOS updates.

I have a first generation Airport Express.  Although it appears on the Airplay screen on my iPad and iPhone 5 (using iOS 7.1.2) the music does not play through the Airport Express.  The Airport Express does function correctly when I stream music via iTunes from my desktop computer, so I know that the device is working.  The Airport Express firmware version 7.6.4 is up to date.

    Hello lorifromminn,

  • Set up first generation airport express?

I have just bought new Airport Extreme and would like to use  first generation express to extend the network (even if it slows down the extended region a bit) but the utility does not let me configure it. Any ideas will br apreciated!

Let's make sure that you have a 1st Gen AirPort Express.
Please look on the side of the Express for the model number. The 1st Gen is A1264.
    Is this what you have?
Which version of the AirPort Utility are you using?

  • How to: Force-sync a first generation Apple TV with iTunes 12

For anyone else out there who's still using a first generation Apple TV and iTunes 12 and realized there's no longer an option to "force" the device to sync, I have a work around.
    Background
With my first generation Apple TV, I "manually" manage the content stored on the device. As well, I don't add content movie-by-movie (song-by-song, etc.). Instead, I have three playlists (Movies, TV Shows, and Music) that I then sync to the Apple TV. The problem is, even pre-iTunes 12, modifying the content of a playlist didn't trigger iTunes to offer to "sync" the device (I don't think it was smart enough to deal with the EOL first generation Apple TV in terms of playlist content changes). But, at least with pre-iTunes 12, you were able to right-click on the device in the sidebar and this would bring up a contextual message with "Sync" as one of the options. So, even though the "Sync" option was greyed-out in the main iTunes window, you could still initiate the sync via the contextual menu (thus "force syncing" the device with iTunes). But, with iTunes 12, this contextual menu has been removed (right clicking does nothing) and thus the ability to "force sync" is gone.
    Solution
After trying many different options to get the first generation Apple TV to sync with iTunes (after updating the content of a synced playlist), this is the only solution I've come up with that works:
    1. Create a playlist called "ATV Force Sync".
    2. Put a single movie in the playlist (I used a short, 10 second video, but I'm sure you could also use a song or any other media—just use something that is short and you don't care if it's on or off the device).
    3. To "force sync" the Apple TV, iTunes > Apple TV > Settings > Movies > Sync Playlist, check the checkbox beside the "ATV Force Sync" playlist. This will then enable the Sync"button and you can now force the Apple TV to sync with iTunes (it'll sync the "ATV Force Sync" playlist, but also sync any changes to any other playlist the Apple TV is set to sync with). Then, the next time you want to force sync (i.e., if you've updated the content in a playlist you want to sync), just uncheck the checkbox beside the "ATV Force Sync" playlist, and the Sync button will be enabled again (and so on, enabling/disabling the "ATV Force Sync" every time you want to force-sync the device).
Anyway, it's not an ideal solution, but at least it works. I've filed a bug report with Apple, but let's be honest, I don't think supporting the first generation Apple TV is on their "to do" list anymore. <G>
Hope this helps someone else out there!
    Kristin.

Hi minjak—I'll see if I can help?
Has the Apple TV ever been connected to iTunes at all (on that, or another computer)? From the sounds of it, the ATV has already been "paired" with an iTunes library, thus it's not (and won't) show up in your current version of iTunes.
So, here's what I'd suggest. On your Apple TV, do the following…
Go to Settings > Computers > Select iTunes Library (or something like that—I don't remember 100% what the option is called as I don't have the screen in front of me right now) and select "Disconnect".
This should remove and "synced" or "paired" computer (iTunes) from your ATV.
Then, re-sync it back up to your version of iTunes. You have to do something like this…
On your ATV, go to Settings > Computers > Connect to iTunes and a passcode should display on your screen. Then, go to iTunes, and the ATV should appear (give it about 15-20 seconds). If it does, select it and enter the passcode showing on the ATV. This should re-sync the ATV to your copy of iTunes.
Make sure both the computer and Apple TV are on the same internal network. And if possible, connect the Apple TV to the network via ethernet (rather than WiFi). Again, make sure the Apple TV is "online" and connected to the same network at the computer running iTunes.
If all works, you should see the Apple TV appear in iTunes, something like this (i.e., there's now a small Apple TV icon at the right end of the row of icons along the top)…
Anyway, have a go at the instructions above and let me know what happens, and we can go from there!
    Thanks,
    Kristin.

  • Does the first generation Airport Express work on newer Macs and IOS devices?

I would like to know if an older Airport Express(M9470LL/A) will work on:
    Macbook Air 2011
    iPhone 4
    iPod Touch 2nd Gen
    iPhone 3Gs

Check again very carefully and make sure that you are downloading the correct AirPort Utility 5.6 for Mac OS X Lion
You likely downloaded AirPort Utility 5.6.1 for Mac, which is only for Snow Leopard and Leopard operating systems.....so it will not run on Lion.

  • How do I extend my wifi using Airport express with my time capsul?

I want to extend my wifi from my time capsul.  Can I do this with airport express?  I have my wifi with cable so would I need to get another modem and hook the express to that?  Would that help?  I want to keep the same network and not add another.

You need to pay attention to something, while extending your network with the latest AirPort Express upgrade, your devices will be connected to it except your iPhone, you'll see your iPhone always connected to the capsule instead, even if you're at 1 foot from the AirPort Express.
You need to change the radio settings from automatic to 802.11a - 802.11b/g on your capsule, then I put it back to the default settings...
Now in the AirPort utility you should see your iPhone connected to the AirPort

  • 2nd generation AirPort Express with Belkin HD ethernet

    Hi,
I've just tried to configure my new 2nd gen AirPort Express to exend my Time Capsule network via Ethernet over mains. I've folloed the other posts here and set up the TC and AP accordingly, using Belkin HDs to provide and internet-over-mains connection. Everything is fine until the Mac in question has to re acquire the Aplle network that is being extended, at which point it reports Internet unavailble!
My question is simply this - can anyone recommend a mains over Ethernet supplier that works correctly with the 2nd gen. AP? The Belkins are cealrly at fault here. If I connect the TC and AP by cable everything is fine, btw. The Belikins have the latest firmware.
    Thanks in advance,
    Pete

You already know the answer. The AirPort Express must be the router in charge of DHCP and NAT services for the Guest Network option to appear...and your AirPort is in Bridge Mode.
In theory, if you could configure the Zyzel gateway to act as a simple bridge mode modem, the AirPort could be configured to provide DHCP and NAT for the network and the Guest Network option would appear.
But, check with your ISP before you do this....to see if this type of setup would even be supported.

  • Second Generation Airport Express (MC414LL/A with two ethernet ports))

The link http://manuals.info.apple.com/en_US/AirPort_Express_Setup_Guide.pdf (page 7) still points to the first generation Airport Express (802.11n - Part FB321LL/A).
Can anyone provide a working link to the User Manual?
Is WDS supported on this dual mode device?

The new manual is now available.

The only theoretical solution is an USB ExpressCard adapter and FireWire ExpressCard. I don't know if anyone's actually attempted it.

A FireWire 400 to 800 cable or adapter, also known as 6 pin to 9 pin.

  • How can I configure my first gen Airport extreme?

does anyone know how I can configure my 1st Gen Airport Extreme with my latest Airport Utility? Or is there another way?

A 1st Generation AirPort Extreme is model number A1143.  Please check on the bottom of your device to confirm that you have this model number.
A1143 can be configured using the latest version of AirPort Utility in Mountain Lion OS X (10.8.4).
If you don't see model A1143......you do not have a 1st Generation AirPort Extreme. What model number do you see?

  • I can't access my 1st generation airport express devices using airport utility

I have a new Motorola Surfboard Extreme wireless cable modem & router set-up on my main internet cable line. To it i've connected 1st generation airport express using an ethernet and extended it with another 1st generation airport express so i can connect to itunes and a remote printer.  When I go to Aiport Utility to perform the set-up, i'm told i need to update to version 5.6.  When installing Aiport Utility 5.6 I receive an error prior to completion which prevents me from performing the set-up or even seeing the two airport express devices in the program.  Anyone have any ideas on how to fix this?

By "1st generation" AirPort Express are you referring to the 802.11g or 802.11n model? Version 5.6 of the AirPort Utility would be required to administer the older 802.11g Express.
If you do have an 802.11g model, are you actually running OS X 10.7.5 on your Mac?

  • How do you "talk" to a second Airport Express?

I have an Airport Express with ethernet connection to a modem wirelessly supporting my iMac. I thought I could add a second Airport Express in another room, connect it to my stereo receiver and play my iTunes library. I connected the second Airport Express to my receiver audio and plugged it in, but can't get my existing wireless network to "see" it. Just get a continuous blinking yellow light.
How do I communicate with it to either configure it or enter a security password to connect it?
Thru my System Preferences/Network how do I differentiate one Airport Express from another? Do I go thru the process to setup a second wireless network? Not as simple as just plugging it in is it?

You have to slave the new AirPort Express off the old one. The easiest way to configure it would be to connect your Mac to it with an Ethernet cable, which will make it a lot easier for AirPort Utility to see it.
If both Express units are 802.11n-capable (model A1264), you should configure the first Express to "Allow this network to be extended" and the second to "Extend a wireless network". You should give each Express its own base station name to allow iTunes to distinguish between them.

  • How do I use a Mac Mini + Airport Express + Time Machine disk to backup another iMac

How do I use a Mac Mini + Airport Express + Time Machine disk to backup another iMac?
The question pretty much says it all.
I have a Mac Mini with an attached 3TB Hard Drive used for Time Machine Backups.
I have an Airport Extreme base station which services that machine plus several others.
I would like to backup my new iMac and a MacBook Pro to the Mac Mini.
What do I need to do on the mini to export that hard drive so that it can be used as a Time Machine target from the other systems?
    All systems are running 10.6.8.

Well you would have to do backups over a network which is much slower and has highest chance of becoming corrupt. I think your best option would be to get an apple time capsule to act as a network and back if thats how you wanna do that
