How do I control my fan speed?

Hello, I have a HP ENVY dv6 laptop, and from time to time it gets really hot, so i would like to have the opportunity to control my fan speed manual. Is there any way I can do that?
Please Help
Sincerely
Crab

Hi Crab,
If your Notebook is running hot then there are few methods you can try to maintain the Temprature.
1.) Go to www.hp.com/go/support website and go to Download Driver section listed under Support.
2.) Look for BIOS and download and install the latest one.
3.) Follow the on-screen instructions to install BIOS and NB might restart multiple times and make sure Ac-power Adapter is connected during the update/installation.
4.) From the Download Driver page, look for Software-Solutions and download HP CoolSense Technology software and install it.
(HP CoolSense Technology is a feature in some HP notebook PCs that combines hardware, software, and mechanical design to dynamically manage the temperature of a notebook).
5.) Restart the Notebook and check.
Also, check the below links for more troublshooting instructions for PC being warmer than normal.

  • How can I control my fan speed?

How can I control my fan speed on my macbook pro? I use SMC for gaming and streaming video from the internet when using my Mac OS, but I partitioned my drive and installed Windows 8 in order to play a different game (not a huge game) and the computer heats up dramatically when playing on Windows through Boot Camp to the point that it freezes every time (it never does this when playing a mac game or streaming on the normal partition Mac OS).
Any suggestions or programs to control fan speed of the mac from windows?

Get a cooling pad.  That will much better than trying to constantly adjust fan speeds.
    Ciao.

  • How do you change the fan speed (rpm)

On a mac, how do you change the fan speed to 7200 or something?

As was mentioned, installing smcFanControl will do this:
    http://81.169.182.62/~eidac/software/page5/page5.html
However, as others have indicated, you should determine what the issue is.  For starters, is your machine actually running hot?  Have you run something to let you know what the actual temperatures are?  Setting the fan at max speed will make your system noisy, will reduce the fan life, and significantly reduce your battery charge.

  • Is it possible to control CPU fan speed (lower) with K8T NEO2-FIS2R (MS-6702)?

    I have:
    MSI K8T NEO2-F motherboard
    AMD Athlon 64 3000+ processor
Bios is latest I found, AMI BIOS 9.20
Operating system is Windows XP pro.
Processor was boxed and with the normal amd fan.
Processor fan is plugged in CFAN slot.
My problem is that the cpu fan spins a bit too fast. Cpu temp stays at 25C and fan is spinning at 1800 rpm.
Setting manual mode from corecenter didn't change the fan speed at all. Not up or down. Neither can SpeedFan program. But if I stress the cpu, the fan starts spinning faster.
What is controlling the fan speed and can I manually control it?
There are no control options in bios.
If I missed any information, please do ask more.

    Hi,
Core Center is crap, you can't do anything else with that than uninstall.
Speedfan works. You'll have to set "PWM 2" from "thermal cruise" to "manual control" somewhere in the advanced configuration menu, I don't remember where you can find that. The help file provided with speedfan is quite good, I strongly recommend reading it carefully. Using speedfan you can also control a second fan connected to the SFAN-connectors.
The built-in fan control sets the speed of the CPU fan to 2/3 of its nominal RPM value (my fan starts at 2100/min, max is something about 3300/min or so). Its speed increases quite late, on my system at temperatures above 50°C. And it increases quite slowly.

  • Motherboard or CoreCenter controls CPU Fan speed?

    I have the 865G Neo2-PLS board running 3.6 bios.
I'm not so sure I want to use CoreCenter; but I liked the way it adjusted the CPU fan speed, based upon the temperature reading.  Or was it the MB itself doing the adjusting?  I know the CPU has a feature which throttles down activity if it gets too hot, but I'm curious what controls that CPU fan automatically.  Thanks.

    Hi
I must say that am very happy with Corecenter in automode!
I have it on my autostart in the program list! It kicks in automatic and controls the rpm of the CPU fan ( 1300 - 2200rpm) depending how much I push it!
I have never had any problems with it...........Use liveupdate to get version 1.6.2.0.
I must say that zalman have saved my day......its silent.....hmmmmm silent...

  • Satellite A100: looking for software to control the fan speed

    Hi,
I'm looking for software to control/read out the fan speed of my laptop, because Power Saver does not seem to do anything. It does not seem to matter if i set the 'Cooling Method' to 'Battery Optimized' or 'Maximum Performance', or even the fixed CPU processing speed. I've (de)installed the Common Module & Power Saver a couple of times to no avail.
Also SpeedFan & NHC do not work.

    Hi
Sorry but I do not agree with your opinion about Power saver utility. Do you really believe that Toshiba create tool like this for nothing? Just for info: power saver utility is not available with Vista OS and on this forum you can find topics where people really missing this nice and useful utility.
Anyway it is well known that many tools you can find on the internet have no much influence on notebook cooling fan speed. To be honest, something like that can be very dangerous because most users want to have silent notebooks and overheating issues are totally underestimated.
Can you please be a little bit more specific about your problem? Is your notebook too loud for you or is battery running time to short? Why you are not satisfied with this tool?

  • [solved]Manually control the fan speed[/solved]

To enable fan control, the module parameter fan_control=1 must be given to thinkpad-acpi.
For example, in ArchLinux kernel 3.6.10, add the following to /etc/modules-load.d/thinkpad_acpi.conf: options thinkpad_acpi fan_control=1
Having done so, reboot and you can use the following commands to control fan speed:
    # echo level 0 > /proc/acpi/ibm/fan (fan off)
    # echo level 2 > /proc/acpi/ibm/fan (low speed)
    # echo level 4 > /proc/acpi/ibm/fan (medium speed)
    # echo level 7 > /proc/acpi/ibm/fan (maximum speed)
    # echo level auto > /proc/acpi/ibm/fan (automatic - default)
    # echo level disengaged > /proc/acpi/ibm/fan (disengaged)
If you receive a PERMISSION DENIED error you can use the following command syntax instead as a work-around:
    # echo level 0 | sudo tee /proc/acpi/ibm/fan ##(fan off)
    # echo level 2 | sudo tee /proc/acpi/ibm/fan ##(low speed)
    # echo level 4 | sudo tee /proc/acpi/ibm/fan ##(medium speed)
    # echo level 7 | sudo tee /proc/acpi/ibm/fan ##(maximum speed)
    # echo level auto | sudo tee /proc/acpi/ibm/fan ##(automatic - default)
    # echo level disengaged | sudo tee /proc/acpi/ibm/fan ##(disengaged)

    Reset SMC.

  • Hp dv9000(dv9392ea) How do you change the fan speed settings

    Hi
I have now been looking for hours on how to change the fan speed settings for this laptop and all the things I have used do not work, has anyone been able to get it work or knows of away?
    Please let me Know
    Thanks

If you have a higher version it should include the earlier version settings.Usually each update is a rollup of previous changes plus newer.
If you are having serious overheating problems I would use a laptop cooling pad with fan/fans. Also,a less radical approach to the mod posted above is drilling some air holes in the bottom of case where the GPU is located. Adding copper shims shown HERE  or HERE on his 'About ME' also keeps temps down.

  • My 2006 iMac has begun to run hot which often causes issues.  How can I adjust the fan speed with supported software?

24-inch iMac (2006) funning hot.  Used "power button while turning on" trick to cool it so we could load some software which was telling us it was too hot;  it was also smellong like it was going to burn up on fire one day while running a slide show for an hour.  Need to figure out how to un-do the constant-on fan and need to find "supported" software that allows me to vary speed.

There is one called smcFanControl 2.2.2 released, but you really need to make sure that your iMac's air intake vents are clean and free from dust so that it is not sucked deeper into the iMac.
To clean the iMac's intake vent:
    1. Shutdown the iMac and disconnect everything from it including the power cord.
    2. Lay the iMac face down on a soft towel or cloth and go get out the vacumm cleaner.
    3. Usinge the vacumm's brush or cravass tool, vigrously vacumm the bottom grill and small vent under the stand.
    4. You also might want to remove the center RAM cover on the bottom and carefully vacumm it out without distrubing the RAM modules.
Then next before using smcFanControl, use the iStat Pro, a Dashboard Widget by iSlayer to first check all the sensor temp's and the speed of all three fans.
Finally if it is still having a cooling problem or you find that a fans has failed, you should stop using the iMac until the problem is fixed by an Authorized Apple Service Provider.

  • How can i control the download speed?

    HI:
when i am downing a software or media from a downloadurl,
    i want to control the speed, eg: 100k, 30k, 20k, ...
    how can i do!

    'greatness'?
@OP you could try lowering your socket receive buffer size to the desired bandwidth-delay product.

  • Why is it that I have to install a third party software to control my fan speeds when my iMac gets hot. Should't the system manage this. My iMac is over heating because of this. Is there a way to let me iMac manage the fans?

I've read many posts talking about using a third party software to manage the fans in my iMac. Can the iMac not do this on its own?

You don't have to do anything. The fans will run when the temperature gets hot enough to trigger them.
My new 2012 iMac isn't like my older 2007 iMac in terms of fan noise. I knew when the 2007 fans were running, I could hear the sound of rushing air and under heavy load they were load. Because the new 2012 models are very different in construction I don't hear that typical sound. In fact, until I saw a teardown I wondered if it had fans. The fan sounds more like a hum and I just never associated it with being a fan. Yes, the top of the computer does get hot, I think part of Apple's design is to use the alumnium back as a heat sink.

  • Cannot adjust R5870 Lightning fan speed

    Hi @all!
    I have a big problem:
The catalyst-center and the afterburner show me options to slow down or speed up the vga-fan - but both do not work.
It seems again as made for the reference design with one fan.
How do I control the fan speed of my brand new R5870 Lightning 2-fan card?
    Any ideas?
    THX!
    EH

    Okay. THX so far... :-(
I want to get that damn thing silent!
    What about watercooling this card?
As far as I know, I need the plate (80,-) a water pump (40,-) a radiator (30,-) aquabox (40,-) and so on and so on... right?
So should I take the pc and walk to the next pc-shop to get the right parts?
Any better ideas? I still have the possibility to return the card to get a more quiet one - but that's a bad feeling... :-)

  • My laptop fan speed is always going so high...

    Hello there.
My laptop fan speed is always running so loud most of the time when I don't even have many programs running. How can I control the fan speed?

    Yes, you can:
    http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/23049
However, I'd look at the root cause also. See what processes are running and see if any are hogging the processor

Not sure you can.  I have never seen any app that would do that.

  • Is there a way control fan speed in ubuntu linux to replace hp coolsense?

My computer is prone to over-heating when I'm using Ubuntu and so I'm trying to control the fan speeds. I've researched a little and I'm blocked  on how to control fan speed  and then installed `lm-sensors`and `fan control`.
I'm now trying to configure lm-sensors to no avail. In terminal I typed `sudo sensors-detect` and answer YES to all YES/no questions. Installed modules with` sudo /etc/init.d/kmod start`.
    Now when I typed `sudo pwmconfig`
    I get this output
/usr/sbin/pwmconfig: There are no pwm-capable sensor modules installed
The way I tried to fixed this is to edit /etc/default/grub to add `acpi_enforce_resources=lax` to the `GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT` and then perform a grub update. I'm still having the same issue.
Could it be that my fans  are PWM 3-pin  where fan speed is controlled by voltage?
This is the output of the `sensors` command.
