How do I convert a DVD to a format suitable for a Digital Download?

I need guidance as to the best way to convert a DVD to a format suitable for a digital download. I am a web developer not a video expert, I only have access to Premiere Pro as a Creative Cloud subscriber. I'm not even sure if this is the best application to do what a need to do.
My client sells books some of which have accompanying DVD's, she wants me to convert these to a format that can be downloaded. I don't have the original files, just the DVD's themselves to work with.

Change steps 2 and 3 to your preferred web format.

    Many Thanks

To convert a DVD for iPod use, you'll need to use third-party software.
You'll first need decrypting software to remove the encryption on the DVD.
Then you'll need conversion software to convert the decrypted files into an iPod friendly format.
Sometimes, both of those tasks can be accomplished with one piece of software.
PQ DVD seems to be popular for Windows users, as well as ImTOO.
Many other titles have been mentioned in this forum. Your question gets asked, and answered, a lot.

I don't find it difficult to try but some have said that it is. YMMV.
I know how to use it and do all the time, it's just hard to do it 'blind'.

Your problem is not exactly the same as that of the original poster of this thread, and it can be very confusing for everybody if we try to answer more than one question in each thread.
In order for us to give your problem our undivided attention to try to solve it, would you kindly start your own thread, describing the trouble you are having in the fullest detail, including completing your details to show what Mac you are using, what operating system, what camera and what version of the iMovie in question.

  • How Do You Convert a DVD video to an mpeg video?

I was just wondering...how do you convert a DVD disc that has videos in it and make it into quicktime mpeg videos that can make the computer understand?

    Hi Ryan.
The FREE program HandBrake will convert DVDs or just sections into mpeg4 files. They can't be imported directly into FCE but they can be imported into iMovie.
Then you just copy the iMovie files into FCE.
    Download it here:-

  • Converting an MP3 to WAV -- How can I convert an MP3 to wav format, 16 bit

How can I convert an MP3 to wav format, 16 bit, 44,1 khz? I like the program Switch which I know can convert MP3s, but how to I set it up for the specific settings that I need?

Just import into a logic session. Then bounce at the specs you require. Logic or Waveburner, iTunes and even Quicktime I think can each do this easily.
A question though. I am assuming you are converting an MP3 to 44.1/16 bit just so you can play the file in a consumer quality CD player?? IF so - that makes sense.
But if you are doing this because you think it will improve the sound quality of your MP3, I will save you some time here. It won't improve the sound quality at all. It will just turn the MP3 into a larger audio file.
44.1/16 bit resolution enables you to have a much better sounding file than MP3 formats, but not by going at it this way.
No offense to you if you know all of this already. I am assuming that you may not know this - because if you did you would also likely know how to convert an audio file.
    Cheers

Thanks for any help you can furnish.

Well, this question really belongs in the iTunes forum, which is where you will get fast answers.
Just go to iTunes Preferences.  Click on the General icon.  Set When you insert a CD to Ask to Import CD.  Click on Import Settings.  Set Import to MP3 decoder.  Make sure you're using Good Quality.
This should deal with your CD's.
With your current music, as long as it does not have DRM restrictions (older iTunes Music did), select the song, right click on the song (or group of songs), pull down to Create MP3 version.

  • Final Cut Express 4.0.1 How do I convert MP4 to a usable format without loosing quality

Final Cut Express 4.0.1 How do I convert MP4 to a usable format without loosing quality

If you shoot in one of the following modes you should be able to Log & Transfer directly into FCE:
HD:  1920x1080/60i (FX or FH mode)
HD:  1440x1080/60i (HQ or LP mode)
    SD:  720x480/60i
1080/60p (PS mode) seems to be the default mode in your camcorder.  FCE only supports progressive video in 720p50 or 720p60.   That's probably why you have had to import via iMovie.
It would be better to upgrade to Final Cut Pro X, the version currently supported.  FCE was discontinued over 18 months ago and is not supported on Lion or Mountain Lion.

How do I import movies with an AVI format taken with a digital SLR?

If you cannot import using File Menu > Import Movies... You'll have to convert them on a Mac.
You will need to use a free app called MPEG Streamclip from Squared 5.
Basically, you drag the .mts file into MPEG Streamclip. Then use FILE/EXPORT USING QUICKTIME and choose Apple Intermediate Codec as your codec. And it will save out to a .mov file and iMovie will edit this format like there was no tomorrow

  • Converting .MOV files (pre snowleopard) to format suitable for iDVD

I purchased a new iMac and migrated my system across (from iMac5 (2.16 GHz) Mac OS 10.4.11 Quicktime 7.6.4 to a new imac 3.06 Mac OS 10.6.2 Quicktime 10.0).
Some of my quicktime files play ok but others prompt me to download quicktime version 7. I really want to convert them to a format that iDVD finds acceptable.
Any converters I have tried fail to read the files.
Is there any s/w available to convert these files to formats suitable for iDVD ?

I really want to convert them to a format that iDVD finds acceptable.
iDVD will support any "conversion" compatible compression format supported by your current QT component configuration. Therefore, what you need to do is find out what compression format(s) are contained in the files that no longer play/are not being accepted by iDVD (or other QT apps).
Any converters I have tried fail to read the files.
If the converters rely on your installed QT components, that is to be expected. If such apps include there own built-in codecs, then the files are either not supported or possibly corrupted.
Is there any s/w available to convert these files to formats suitable for iDVD ?
I would normally recommend QT 7 Pro ($30) or MPEG Streamclip (free) to perform the conversions. However, if your files contain content not supported by your current QT component configuration, then the files cannot be converted until the specific required components are installed. (E.g., Filp4Mac ($) for windows, Perian (free) for DivX, XviD, and similar files, the QT MPEG-2 Playback component ($) for MPEG-2 video content, etc.) To learn which codecs are missing, you might try opening the Finder "Info" window for the file or see if the free VLC app will load/play/info the file content.
Contrary to what many people think, there are many video compression formats (technologies) used and no single player plays everything without having the correct component support available. This is like trying to play a DVD on a CD player, or playing and Blu-ray on a DVD player.

how to get the french track for the digital download from having purchased a DVD at the store

    Hi, pascalegadbois.
Thank you for the question.  From your question it seems like you are looking to change the language setting for a movie downloaded via Digital Copy.  If this is the case, then the instructions below will walk you through how to adjust the language settings.  Also, depending on the region the video was downloaded, not all languages are supported.

  • How can I convert Imovie DVD to work on a PC

I am trying to make a class video in imovie. I want to make DVDS for the kids that will play on PC's Dell Etc. or on their dvd players at home? How do I convert it in imovie to burn to a DVD that will play on a PC

    Hi
There are two levels on this Q:
    A. If there is no iDVD on Your Mac (and it's not on newer Macs as Apple discarded it) then You need a program that can do this.
Your Mac can burn CDs and DVDs - BUT DVD as Data-DVDs not as Video-DVDs - they need a program to be encoded and STRUCTURED as such.
    • iDVD is part of the boxed version of iLife'11 and can only be bought outside Apple as on Amazon and e-bay
    • DVD Studio pro - Part of FinalCut Studio Pro bundle - this to has expired and can only be bought second handed. (High price and tough learning Curve - but best ever done.)
    • Roxio Toast™ - Not as elegant as iDVD - but has many other positive additions (I like it as 10-Pro incl BD-component) (now version 11)
    • Burn - only free alternative I know of on Internet. Very simple - Just for doing a plain Video-DVD
    Burn http://www.digital-digest.com/software/Burn.html
only You can buy from Apple is
    • FinalCut Pro-X which also can burn to DVD but without any nice themes.
    AppleMan1958
You can also buy Compressor from Apple for $50 US. It will also create DVD and BluRay but without the nice themes.
    B. If You got a DVD authoring program - then
Making better or worse DVDs still occurs
    • Brand of DVD matters - Cheap DVDs as Memorex and NoName known problem makers for VIDEO - I only use Verbatim
    • Type of DVD used - I use DVD-R as they also play on older DVD-players - and NEVER +/-RW as they usually gives lot's of problems
    • BURN SPEED - (Important esp reg. PC or playback on Mac that burned the DVD) - I set it down to x2 or x4 as this gives far less burn errors

  • How can I convert copied DVD's to play on iTunes/Apple TV?

I'm trying to convert my DVD collection to hard drive to play on my TV using Apple TV.  I can rip the DVD's to HD, but don't know how to get them into iTunes so that Apple TV can access them.  Any suggestions?

Assuming you have .avi or mkv files on your hard drive ( or most other formats!) download Vuze - the basic software is free - I've been using it for almost a year- never had lypsync problems. And it asks you what device you'll be sync'ing iTunes with the optimise the format.
    Way no
