How Do I Convert an HD File to Non HD

I just bought a Flip Ultra HD video camera and the HD resolution is nice, but the file sizes are just enormous. I do not need to save every video I shoot as HD, so I am wondering if there is a way to convert the file to a non HD format when I import it? The default resolution is 1280 x 70 and format is H.264 video compression, AAC audio compression, MP4 file format.
I'm a relatively new Mac user and completely new to the Flip so let me know if I am leaving out any important information.

I am not familiar w/ your vid cam, but when you connect to IM does is it give you a choice between Large or Full import? If so, choose Large and you will import at SD.

Yes to both.
In Quicktime Export -> Export Sound to Wave
In iTunes, check your preferences for General>Import and then right click on the file to convert to WAV
Also STP can do that.
Double click the file to open it in the File Editor and Save as, then select Wave as the filetype.

Rather than try to buy a box, I suggest you take the computer to a FedEx or UPS store. They will wrap and safely package the device for a reasonable cost (I have shipped two iMacs this way).

Thanks for your reply but that's not my problem.
I know that I can burn an M4A file to a CD and then import it back as an MP3, but that's an annoying process and wastes blank CDs. I thought iTunes had a menu choice to convert a selected file to MP3 format. I guess that's not true with M4A versions.
I will simply buy my music from Amazon from now on and I won't have to deal with this file format and protection nonsense. I can download music from Amazon in MP3 format as the rest of my music is in.
