  • How to convert .avi files to .mov format for use in FCE ?

    Hi guys,
I need to import an avi file into FCE. How do I convert it to mov format ?
    Thanks

i am in the same boat. i have a canon G9 and automatically downloaded to iphoto without thinking. the videos i extracted seem to be .avi. what do i have to do to edit them in FCE4? i tried to convert them with prism, the video is messed up. i tried to put them into imovie instead, it won't let me do any effects on them. it's so confusing bc it lets the videos load in, or so i thought, but then it won't let me do anything to them? what do i do?

Turns out the answer to that question changes if you ask it more than 4 times, so ask it again....
The answer depends on the type of video files you want to convert.  If they are DRM protected commercial videos, no help can be given here.  Google.

  • How do I convert MP4 file to AVI or MOV using MacBook Pro (2010)

I am 10.6.4 new user on a new MacBook Pro. This is my first Mac computer.
I want to convert a MP4 video file to AVI or MOV file type. How would I do this on my new Mac? Documentation says I have Quicktime X, but I cannot find Quicktime X on my system. When I try to load Quicktime 7 Pro, my system says I have Quicktime X and cannot load Pro. Apple websites say Pro version will allow me to convert the MP4 files. Anyone have any experience or ideas on what I should do? How do I find Quicktime X? Will it do the conversion for me? Thanks

Use MPEG Streamclip, or open the QuickTime Player from the /Applications/Utilities/ folder, installing this software if needed.

  • Converting AVCHD files from .mt2s VS Ingesting Directly with FCE

I found this out by mistake.
I am working with lots of older footage taken on a Sony Camera in AVCHD. Originally I downloaded much of that footage to my PC using Sony's software Picture Motion Browser (PMB).
All of the files stored on my PC were taken from the camera into .mt2s format.
I have decided to work with Mac and now needed to convert those files to .mov to use in FCE.
I used a third party program called ClipWrap and it worked well. MPEG Stream Clip will also do this well.
My files converted to .mov this way ended with files that retained their same file names as existed from the original download to the PC in .mt2s format. I find this an amazing advantage as these file names hold the full date and time shot information. Year, month, day ... e.g. 20090223132124
If on the other hand I ingest files using FCE, the resulting file names default to clip numbers only e.g. clip #1 Clip #2 etc. ... and all the date information is gone.
? My question is this ... Is it OK or advisable to go thru this 2 step process for the file name convenience? Do I lose anything in this double step ... such as file quality, data or anything else that would hurt the end result in my final editing in FCE?

If you feel the ClipWrap/Streamclip approach is more convenient, go for it. As long as you're using the program to convert directly to the Apple Intermediate Codec then the only thing you lose is time (in my experience Log and Transfer ingests a bit faster + has a nicer interface).

  • How can I convert JPG files in multiple subfolders into PDFs with a batch?

So here's the situation. I'm sitting on 400+ files, each in its own individual subfolder which also contains 4-10 other files. Those files I don't care about, only the .jpg file. I want to be able to take all of those .jpg files and convert them into PDFs, saving them in the same original folder. I've tried making an action to do this but it selects all the files in the folder and converts them as well.

Should be, yes... It's one of the options of the batch processes. I believe
it's under the first step, the one where you select which folder/files to
process. There should be a window there to select which file types to
process as well. Untick everything except for JPG and it should work...

  • How to convert a mesh to an object for use with pathfinder?

(I tried searching for this problem, but all that came up were a lot of posts about crash reports.)
My problem is that I've taken over a document where a lot of objects have mesh fills. I need to take these objects and convert them to black and white, and they need to be compound paths (ie have holes in them where there used to be color). But whenever I choose two objects, where one has a mesh fill, I can't use the pathfinder. I also can't expand the object with the mesh.
I've tried looking in the help files and search the web, but not found anything so far. Does anyone have the solution?
Why doesn't the pathfinder simply discard the mesh in the first place if it can't work with it? I could always undo if it's not the result I expected.

I am not sure I understand any of this bu you can in CS 5 give the mesh point colors an opacity of 0% since transparency is now supported in gradient mesh.
Or if you need a shaped whole in the gradient mesh then you can simply make a non clipped non inverted opacity mask.
Here you have a combination of the opacity set to zero for one of the mesh points and a shape used as an opacity mask.

  • Best Video Converter (for Mac) For Use With CS5

I need a good converter for a Mac Pro so that I can easily bring in AVI i
    nto CS5.
    Thanks.

What sort of "AVI" are you talking about? An AVI is just a container/box/dufflebag for all sorts of stuff; Macs and QuickTime will handle a number of codecs stored in an AVI container, but not everything. So ultimately, a Mac converter might not do you any good if there isn't a decoder available for the Mac. For example, Lagarith and Ut are two popular lossless codecs that write to AVIs, but there are no decoders for Mac, so the AVIs are unusable there.
Another thing to consider is that, in all likelihood, if a converter can open up the AVI on the Mac, then Premiere will be able to import it without any other necessary changes. Get MediaInfo to analyze the file and discover what is inside of it. Once you know that, we can make better recommendations about how to treat the file.

  • How do you format an NTSF external hard drive for use with Mountain Lion

I'm switching over to Mac from PC, and have an external NTSF formated hard drive I regularly use. I understand from the forum the initial file transfer should be no issue, but for ongoing use of the HD, does it need to be formated to something other than NTSF... and if so, to what and how.

    Do this when you're ready:
    Drive Partition and Format
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Apply button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.

  • How do I install WIndows 7 from a download for use with Parallels?

I had installed Parallels and Windows 7 to my Macbook when I first purchased it.  Had some issues and uninstalled both.  Now I'm trying to reinstall and I can seem to get Windows installed.  HELP!

Haven't used Parallels, but have VMWare and VirtualBox on the Mac and must be similar. First off, by "download", it must be in an .iso format file, that represents the contents of a physical disk.
After creating the new virtual machine, configuring all the settings as needed for Win7, go to the virtual CD/DVD drive configuration. There should be means for attaching the .iso file to the device: Fusion calls it "Use disk image" and presents a drop down menu for selecting the .iso file. Then confirm that the startup order and/or startup device prioritizes the CD/DVD device. Once that is done, just go ahead and start the virtual machine up and it will boot from the .iso image. You can then use the standard Windows installer to set up your new Win7 instance.

  • How should I build Berkeley DB 4.7 on a mac for use with Java?

How should I build Berkeley DB 4.7 on my mac so that I can call it from Java? I don't want to run the pure-Java BDB.
I got the 4.7.25 tarball and built it using:
    cd build_unix
    ../dist/configure --enable-java
    make
    sudo mak install
This produces binaries and the java jar, but when I try to construct a new Database() I get:
    java.lang.UnsatisfiedLinkError: /Users/james/Library/Java/Extensions/libdb_java-4.7.jnilib:
         at java.lang.ClassLoader$NativeLibrary.load(Native Method)
         at java.lang.ClassLoader.loadLibrary0(ClassLoader.java:1822)
         at java.lang.ClassLoader.loadLibrary(ClassLoader.java:1715)
At this point, I've copied the contents of /usr/local/BerkeleyDB.4.7/lib to ~/Library/Java/Extensions, but it doesn't make any difference. If I set -Djava.library.path=/usr/local/BerkeleyDB.4.7/lib, I get the same error but with the jnilib in /usr/local.
I'm running OS X 10.5.7, with Java 1.6.0_07 64 bit. Machine is a unibody MacBook Pro.

    Hi,
I hope you have resolved this yourself. If not, I'll try to help.
It is possible that you are building an incompatible binary. Are you using a 64-bit build of Java? If so, you might need to "force" Berkeley DB to be built for the x86_64 architecture. This user had a similar issue.
Have you succesfully built and installed any other JNI libraries?

  • Copying Time Machine files to external drive for use with PC

Hello! Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.
My MacBook Pro recently died. I have it backed up by Time Machine on an external drive. Now I'd like to copy my files from the backup to another external drive so that I can access them later from a PC computer running Windows (7 or 8). Is that possible? The Time Machine drive, I believe, is formatted specifically for Mac, but the external drive I'm trying to copy to is FAT32. Can I connect both to a friend's Mac, look for the files I need, and then copy them from the backup drive to the other external drive? Will a PC computer be able to read them?
    Thanks!

Usually that error indicates a drive malfunction; specifically, the drive is spinning down and not responding to bus signals. Some "Eco" or "green" drives are known for this behavior. The following steps may help:
Select  ▹ System Preferences ▹ Energy Saver ▹ Power Adapter and uncheck the box labeled Put the hard disk(s) to sleep when possible, if it's checked.
If the drive is connected to a hub, connect it to a built-in port on the computer.
If a firmware update is available for the drive, apply it.
Contact the drive manufacturer to see whether there's a firmware setting you can change.
If you installed vendor software for the drive, uninstall it.
If none of the above steps resolves the issue, try another drive.

  • How can I trigger an automatic update of firefox for use with selenium?

Firefox auto-update is not working on the server that I am working on. I am only able to update firefox by going to the menu|about page. I want to automate the update of firefox so that before I run my tests every night it will be updated to the newest version.

You normally trigger an update check by opening the Help > About window.
I don't know if you can trigger this action via Selenium.
Otherwise you would have to check the update.xml file to see if updates are available.
The Live Http Headers extension should give the URL after opening the Help > About window.
