How do I copy a non-protected home made DVD to my iMac?

Hello - My daughter's camp musical was burned to DVD and I want to rip it to my iMac. It is NOT copyright protected. I tried to make a disk image with disk utility but I must have used it incorrectly because I can't figure out how to play it. Can somebody assist me with this?

Duplicate a CD or DVD
1. Insert the DVD/CD;
2. Open Disk Utility, and select the DVD/CD from the left side list (select
      the DVD/CD icon on top);
3. from the DU File menu select New | Disk Image from Disk 1;
4. Choose to format the disk image as DVD/CD Master, name the disk
      image and click Save;
5. When the .cdr file is finished select it with mouse and press
      COMMAND-I to open the Get Info and check the box to lock the file;
6. Choose the .cdr file from the left side list, click Burn, and insert a new,
      blank DVD or CD.
This is not the same as "ripping it to your iMac."

I have made a number of VCR to DVD coversions and also DV camcorder imprints on DVD+R discs. I now would like to load these onto my iMac for further editing before i either reburn to another DVD the finished product to send to my children. These are all childhood movies of events. You need to convert the VOB files in the TS-Folder of the DVD back to DV which iMovie is designed to handle. For that you need mpegStreamclip:

For the benefit of others who may read this thread:
Obviously the foregoing only applies to DVDs you have made yourself, or other home-made DVDs that have been given to you. It will NOT work on copy-protected commercial DVDs, which in any case would be illegal.
If you are running Lion:

The installer of the MPEG-2 Playback Component may refuse to install the component in Lion. Apple states the component is unnecessary in Lion, however MPEG Streamclip still needs it.

The current versions of MPEG Streamclip cannot take advantage of the built-in MPEG-2 functionality of Lion. For MPEG-2 files you still need to install the QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component, which is not preinstalled in Lion. You don't have to install QuickTime 7.

There are many methods, however you are specific about the type of files you want to move. The first time your Mac turns on it begins with Setup Assistant and asks if you want to migrate from another Mac or PC, you must have missed that. I'd recommend looking over Pondini's Guide and following the directions for using Migration Assistant. You can find them by clicking How to Use Migration Assistant From PC to Mac 10.7 Lion.
If you have specific files you are attempting to migrate then moving them to an external HD and then just dragging and dropping them from the EHD to the Mac would be very simple. Apple explains migration strategies in Switch 101

Hello again.
I recently lost my external LaCie 250GB (it stopped working after power cable was pulled accidently) and with it ALL my daughter's older, original music MP4s and original iMovie files.
Now- I DID make 5 DVDs of them BEFORE this happened but I would like to make more and incorporate the original 7 songs in this project. So- long story short: I need an application to "rip" my own work OFF the DVD to "reuse" on a new one.
I realise I will lose quality but hey- beggars cannot be choosers.
Does anyone know of a free or reasonably priced "ripping" software to let me extract from my home-made DVDs?

the unspokable MTR is a ripper.. it strips-off the copy protection of commercial DVDs.. absolutely NO need for homebrewn disks, and I really don't understand, why so many people 'recommend' that tool for a process, you simply accomplish with the Finder (non protected disk: drag'n drop onto harddrive... done)
plus, a conversion from lossy mp2 (=DVD), to lossy mp4 (which most rippers support...), to lossy mp2 again (=new DVD)... that is beyond my horizon ... (??)
for converting just parts of a DVD, the usual reply is the combo of Apple mpeg2 plugin (19$) + Streamclip (free) .. it allows to set In- and Out-point in the DVD's content and converts straight into iM/iDVD 'native', internal format dv-stream...

I was given a DVD+R disc by a missionary which has an audio/video file on it which plays on my IMac with Snow Leopard but which will not play on my Magnavox
NB500MG1F Blu-Ray DVD player. I rerecorded the disc on a compatible DVD-R for the DVD player, but it still won't play. How can I copy the disc to make more copies to give to other people who are interested in the project? There are no copyright considerations, as it was home-made by the missionary.

If it was burned as a data DVD, you need to use a product such as iDVD to burn it as a video DVD. If you used the DVD Player to play the video, it's a video DVD. If you used the QuickTime Player, it's probably a data DVD.

I have a secure pdf file and the password to open it. I need to upload an unsecured copy of it. I unlock it then attempt to copy or save to my computer or upload and when I go to the copied, saved or uploaded version, it is locked. How do I copy it so I may use it unsecured?

Unlocking the PDF would not remove the password from the PDF. You need to remove the password and then save the PDF which can be achieved via Adobe Acrobat.
If you are using Adobe Acrobat, then follow the below mentioned steps:
Click File
Click Properties
Click Security Tab
From the drop down select "No Security"
Save the PDF

Copying old home made DVDs w/ a menu

I would like to duplicate a DVD a friend made a few years ago. It has a menu and the video on it. This is NOT a copyrighted DVD but one that he made in DVD SP2, i think before he got rid of his equipment. It might have been made on another program. He can't remember.
I have a program YadeX that will write a disk image but I haven't had much success playing back DVDs once I write that disk image on it. It will usually play back on my computer if you tell the DVD player program to open the Video_TS folder BUT it will not play back on a regular DVD player.
Is there a program out there that will allow me to copy this DVD with the menu and video on it? Hopefully so because I don't feel like grabbing the menu and footage off of it and then rebuilding it in DVD studio pro.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

A week ago, my Nik plugin to Aperture and Photoshop crashed the these two apps. I created a new account, and now the plugin works without crashing int he new account. i want to transfer all my settings to the new account. How can I do it?

Create a new folder on the desktop, choose Go to Folder from the Finder's Go menu, provide ~/Library/ as the path, move some of the items inside to that folder, keeping track of what you moved, try the plugin again, and repeat as needed.
Moving the wrong item to a different user account will transfer the problem.

I am trying to import my contacts from my old PC to my new iMac. I had all my files transfered by an Apple store tech. My contacts went to my Address Book. Which is fine, but I now want to import them into Office for iMac 2011 Outlook. So I exported them out of Outlook 2007 for Windows into a file on a flash drive. I am now trying to import them from the flash drive into Outlook on my iMac. I can't figure out how to find the flash drive on the iMac to import the file. HELP!!!

By default, all drives are hidden from the desktop. Pretty dumb in my opinion, but that's the default.
From the desktop, choose Finder > Preferences. Turn on the check boxes for all drive types you want to always appear on the desktop.

How to obtain copy of OSX 10.3 Panther for install on Imac DV400

I have added 1 gig of RAM.This IMAC is running OS9. I was told to buy Panther OS 10.3 Panther as it is the best operating software for this older machine.
I was going to go to apple store education and buy it but all there appears to be for sale is Tiger? I thought Apple required upgrades to be per machine, a new copy of Panther for each machine. I have a full copy of Panther for my Desktop G5. This is for a student 1st grader. I need advice. Where can I buy this? I was at EBAy many times and was scarred off because I do not know much about macs and cannot tell if a seller is advertising something which is stolen, previously used and not for real. If I want to set up my Imac with all the software on OS9 for the first grader to play games efficiently would you recommend partitioning hard drive into one for OS9 and most for OS 10.3. I can then put on my Office apps, photoshop ect.

I have never seen an imac function with OSX so can only relate to the simple games in 256 colors I see when we use it to play games. Is there a way to copy or sync specific pictures just from a photo album from my iPhone (5s) to my iMac?
I don't want to have to select each & every one again from my camera roll when I've already taken the time to organize the photos I want to an album on my iphone.

For photos that were originally synced from a computer you will need a third-party app such as Simple Transfer (which has a free lite version called Simple Photo & Video Transfer) which can copy them off via your wifi network. But as photos are 'optimised' when they are synced to the iPad, any that you then copy back to a computer may not be exactly the same as they originally were on your computer.

It is possible to get a seperate decoder such as the one offered by Creative, but in my opinion the easiest route is to simply buy a new dvd player.

Note about some dvd players: If your player doesn't have 5.1 channel outputs like the pictured one does, then you will need to get a player that does. Unfortuantly, most basic dvd players do not include these outputs anymore because digital surround sound receivers are so affordable and readily avalible. Therefore, in order to be guaranteed that your new player will have these outputs, look for a dvd player that also plays dvd audio and/or sacd. These players MUST have these outputs for the multi-channel audio playback, and most can also output the dvd signal through these outputs.
Also, a lot of cheapie players sold at small movie and music stores have 5.1 outputs, but check before you buy. Good Luck!
