How do I copy & transfer iPhoto library from one mac to another?

I have a Power mac G5 and want to transfer a complete copy of my iPhoto 6 library (with all the specific albums) from my Power mac G5 to a new mac mini. I have an external drive. Is there a way to do this operation direct, between computers, or do I go through the external drive? Which do you recommend and how do I do this?
After the copy transfer is completed, in the future, when I add new photos to my iPhoto library on my G5 and I want to transfer a copy of the new photos to the mac mini, do I follow the same process you outline above? Will the future copy transfer require I delete the library on the mac mini, and make a new complete copy transfer, or will a future transfer only pick-up the new photos?
Thanks,
HDP

1 - connect the two machines together (a network or firewire target mode) quit iPhoto and drag the iuPhoto library from the old to th enew machine
2 - alternatively you can connect the EHD to the old machine, drag the iPhoto library to it, move it to the new machine and drag the iPhoto library to the picturews folde on it
3 - there is no way to sync the libraries - if the two are on a network you could use iPhoto library manager (only if both use the same version of iPhoto ) or use image capture to move the photo to the desktop from the camera and tehn impor tthem into both - but you can not automatically sync them you have to load the photos twice or use IPLM to do it

  • How can I move my iPhoto Library from one Mac to another without losing the comments on the individual photos in the process?

How can I move my iPhoto Library from one Mac to another without losing the comments on the individual photos in the process? The source Macbook (OS 10.4.11 and iPhoto 6.0.6 (3.2.2.)) is with my husband in Germany, the target MacBook Pro (OS 10.8.5, iPhoto 11) is with me in Japan. Thanks for your help.

I copied the iPhoto Library to a CD and from there to the new MacBook
If you copied the library to the CD via the Finder it would be no different than the methods Terence suggested.  If you used the Share ➙ Burn menu option from inside iDVD you'll get a mini library that has to be accessed from the open library and the events/alubums copied into the destination library.  Not the same as the other methods.
The Share ➙ Burn method is no longer supported with iPhoto 9 and later.

  • Transfer iPhoto library from one mac to another

How do I move my iPhoto Library from my old MBP to the new one (iPhoto 11)?

Link the two Macs together: there are several ways to do this: Wireless Network, Firewire Target Disk Mode, Ethernet, or even just copy the Library to an external HD and then on to the new machine...
But however you do choose to link the two machines...
Simply copy the iPhoto Library from the Pictures Folder on the old Machine to the Pictures Folder on the new Machine.
    Then launch iPhoto. That's it.
This moves photos, events, albums, books, keywords, slideshows and everything else.

  • How can I copy an iPhoto book from one Mac to another?

I'm wanting to copy an iPhoto book from one MBP (OS 10.7.3) to another (10.8.3). Is there an easy way to do it?

You will have to copy the entire iPhoto Library to the other Mac as the library is a virtual entity in the library recorece in the database files.
Once it's been copied launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and select the libary in the window that appears.  I
NOTE:  if the new Mac has  newer iPhoto version than the old Mac check to make sure it has the same theme that you used in the book.  There were some changes in themes from iPhoto 8 (09) to iPhoto 9 (11).  If your new iPhoto doesn't have the same theme you may want to complete the book on the old Mac.

  • Transfer iPhoto library from one computer to another

I have many photos in my PowerBook G4 library. They are arranged in many folders. I have recently acquired another Mac using the same OS X 3.9. I have not been succesful in tgransfering my iPhoto library to the new computer. I did copy the entire library to an external drive and then copied it into the Pictures folder of the new computer. When I start iPhoto the new computer does not recognize the library.
Could somebody please tell me if there is a way around this?
    Thanks,
    Pierre

    Hello EWW:
Before telling you more about my problem, allow me to make three comments:
    1) I have never been a member of a discussion forum and am amazed that somebody (you) took an interest in my problem. Thanks a lot!
    2) I have been a PC person all my life. The reason I now have 2 Macs is that I inherired them when my son was killed in an airplane accident a short while ago. Although I have learned a lot about the Macs I will need a lot of TLC to get up to speed.
    3) I use the notebook primarily for internet access and I intend to use the desk top unit for photography. I just acquired a copy of Photoshop CS2 for it.
Here is the background you requested about:
    1) Both computers run iPhoto 2.0.1. {Is it worthwhile upgrading?}
    2) On the laptop the file “Pictures” contains a single file which is called “iPhoto Library”. {Can I have several library files? How do I do that?}
    3) I copied the iPhoto Library file to an external hard drive and then transferred it to the new computer.
    4) The new computer also had an iPhoto Library file in the Pictures folder. I deleted this file and replaced it with the newly transferred file.
    5) When I double-click on the iPhoto icon (in the dock) it tells me that the “Photo library”, the “Last Import” and the “Trash” are all empty.
    6) When I open the iPhoto Library using Finder>>Pictures>iPhoto Library I find that my pictures are there, but there are no Albums.
Question: Is there a way that I can connect the two computers directly and use Import?
    Thanks for your help

  • How can I move my iTunes library from one Mac to another?

I recently purchased a new 13" MacBook Air to replace my older 17" MacBook Pro.
How can I move my iTunes library to my new MBA?
I also plan on purchasing a new iPhone in the next month or so.  Can I move my songs from my iPod to that too?

Easy. Copy it from the old Mac to the new one.
There are a variety of techniques including Setup Assistant (as soon as you get your new MacBook Air, it will ask you if you want to transfer information from another computer), Migration Assistant (if you elect to transfer information later), enabling file sharing between the two computers, or copying your music to a flash drive or other storage device followed by importing it to iTunes.
iTunes: How to move your music from one computer to another
Once your music library and everything else you want to transfer from the MacBook Pro resides on the new MBA, sync your iPod to the MBA. Sync the iPhone too when you get it, and they will both have identical iTunes music libraries.

  • Transfer iPhone Library from one Mac to another?

    Hi, Everyone:
I would like to move my entire iPhoto Library from my iMac to my MacBook.  I tried dragging the "old" Library to an external USB drive, then attaching that drive to the MacBook and re-dragging it there.  I am getting the following error message, though:
"You can’t open your current photo library using this version of iPhoto.  You have made changes to your photo library using a newer version of iPhoto. Do you want to quit and use the latest version of iPhoto, or do you want to create a new photo library?"
The dialog then gives me only one option, "Quit."
What do I do?  I'm about to go away to school, and would like to have my photos with me on my MacBook, rather than at home on the iMac.
    Thanks!
    Caroline

What version of iPhoto do you have on yhour iMac and on the Macbook?  If they are the same then do the following on your Macbook: apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
2 - run Option #4 to rebuild the database.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button and select the library you want to add in the selection window..
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu option.
4 - In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments.  However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • Can I copy a Photos library from one Mac to another?

I have upgraded an iMac and MacBook Pro to Yosemite 10.10.3, and am switching to the new Photos app and iCloud Photo Library.  I want to keep full copies of my Photos library on both the iMac and MacBook Pro, with an Optimised version of the library on my iPhone.
My iMac has the master Photos library.  It is slowly uploading the 28,000 photos in the library to iCloud Photo Library, and they are slowly appearing on my other devices.
The question is, can I copy the Photos library from the iMac to the MacBook Pro via a USB hard drive, and expect iCloud Photo Library to work out that each photo is duplicated in the two libraries, or will I end up with duplicates in iCloud Photo Library?  What would be the effect if I were to change the MacBook Pro to Optimised after copying the Photos library?
If I can do this, it will mean I can see my Photos library on my laptop much sooner, and I might be able to get my MacBook Pro to the office which has much quicker upload speeds.  I don't fancy taking my iMac in to the office, and my boss might ask an awkward question or two...
Thanks in advance for any advice.

Yes, and no.  Yes, if the plist(s) don't contain any pathname info.  Obviously, no, if they do, unless of course the other system has the exact same directory structure and filenames.
I should add a little caveat about preference panes.  User prefpanes may store plists in ~/Library/ByHost.  And the plist filenames in there usually have a long code and letter sequence which I think is machine specific.  So they probably would be problematic moving to another machine.

  • I own a MacBook Pro and an iMac. How can I copy my iPhoto library from my MacBook to the iMac?

I own a 13" MacBook Pro and a 27" iMac and I have different iPhoto libraries for each one of them.
How can I copy the iPhoto library from the MacBook to the iMac without losing the pictures I have on the iMac library?
Is it possible to merge the libraries?
Can I do this without using an external HDD? (e.g. connecting them through an ethernet cable?)
    Thanks for your help!

    1. By eirher a: renaming one of the Libraries or b: copying them to another folder
    2. If you have Aperture 3.3 or later and iPhoto 9.3 or later you can merge libraries with Aperture.
Otherwise the only way to merge Libraries is with the paid ($20) version of iPhoto Library Manager
    3. Yes.

  • How to transfer printer settings from one Mac to another (both OSX)?

Hello, I have not found a detailed description on how to transfer printer settings from one Mac to another.
My issue is that I have a Mac G5 with 3 different settings saved as "presets" for the same printer. This works great, since the posters I print (on the large format printer) need different margins and different paper at times.
This G5 is basically retired and only used for printing. G5 has OSX 10.3.9
I have a MacPro as its replacement (OSX 10.4.11).
The MacPro has all my apps and other settings setup to my liking.
I found several links via Google saying copy this folder or directory, but I am not sure I did it correctly. I don't see the "presets".
I tried launching the Migration Assistant (I hope that's the correct name), but was concerned the settings on the new MacPro would be overwritten with ALL the old stuff on the older G5. I did not start the transfer process because of this.
If someone would list the steps needed to accomplish the transfer of printer settings or advise if this is possible, then I would be very grateful! The previous user of the G5 I am using was a "Genius" and I don't know how he created these "preset" choices.
    Thanks!

Hi SCChelpdesk, and a warm welcome to the forums!
I found several links via Google saying copy this folder or directory, but I am not sure I did it correctly. I don't see the "presets".
This is the File that holds that info on Tiger, not certain on Panther...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.print.custompresets.plist
After moving, you very well might have to change the Owner's Permissions within Get Info window, then log out/in.
I tried launching the Migration Assistant (I hope that's the correct name), but was concerned the settings on the new MacPro would be overwritten with ALL the old stuff on the older G5. I did not start the transfer process because of this.
MA would transfer the info, but/and, if the user that had that info had the same Shortname as on the new one, it'll demand you give it a new Shortname to use... but then those settings would be transferred to that new user on the new machine. I think the 1st one will work though.
The previous user of the G5 I am using was a "Genius" and I don't know how he created these "preset" choices.
We can go through that way if you like... not all that hard.
