How do I create a named destination in InDesign?

I want to create a hyperlink from an HTML page that will open a PDF file at a specific point. I'm generating the PDF in InDesign CS5. How do I create the named destination (Objective2) so I can do the following?
http://preparatorychemistry.com/Bishop_Book_atoms_1_test.pdf#nameddest=Objective2

I also had this question and, seeing no response to your post, submitted my own at:
http://forums.adobe.com/message/5856231
However, I was told by Adobe that a solution is not available (below). Have you discovered anything to the contrary? I was not able to get the suggested solution by Jongware to work for me.
Having just completed a phone call with Gaurev Sethi of Adobe escalated technical support in which I shared my screen to explain and demonstrate the desire to link from an external URL to a specific location within a PDF file that has been exported from InDesign, it was determined that the desired functionality is not supported in InDesign and has been identified as a limitation of the software.
In researching alternate documentation software that supports PDF export, I discovered that Madcap Software supports this functionality in its Flare product:
http://webhelp.madcapsoftware.com/flare9/Default.htm#Nav_Links/Named_Destinations/Creating _Named_Destinations.htm
Note that linking via URL to a bookmarked location within a PDF is not supported:
http://blogs.adobe.com/tcs/2011/01/tcs-specific/linking-to-a-page-within-a-pdf-and-more.ht ml
More about parameters that can be specified to open PDF files are available here:
http://www.adobe.com/content/dam/Adobe/en/devnet/acrobat/pdfs/pdf_open_parameters.pdf
Although the above link is for a previous version of Acrobat, I could find no evidence to the contrary in the current SDK documentation.

  • Creating named destinations in InDesign CS3?

Hello, I need some help with an issue I'm having. I want to create named destinations in a PDF file from InDesign so that I can easily access a specific destination in the file using the #nameddest="something" opening parameter. I tried using the hyperlink destinations but they didn't work. Out of desperation I also tried using the bookmarks but they didn't work either (as expected). Can someone please provide some info on how to create a named destination using InDesign or otherwise somehow allow easy access to a fixed anchor point in a PDF document created in InDesign.
If it helps, I'm using Adobe InDesign CS3, Adobe Reader 9.0, Windows XP SP2, and the file I want to access is on a UNC Server address.
    Thanks in advance.

Do not save as JPEG from Photoshop. Image quality degrades; how much that is, and how visible it is, depends on the compression and the resolution.
There should not be any problem placing your PSDs directly into InDesign. I don't really grok what you mean by "save Photoshop files as PSD's", how on earth are you saving them now? JPEG?
As for the preview quality, see Peter's answer, which applies to
    i any
    imported image of any kind.

  • How to open PDFs at named destinations with MS-Word hyperlinks?

    Hi forum,
In MS-Word you can create hyperlinks
to open local files, (protocol: file://...)
to open websites or (protocol: http://...)
to go to intern bookmarks or so.
Is it possible to open a local PDF this way at a defined point inside it? For example at a named destination or a bookmark...
In a word file I discuss some different PDFs and compare some issues in these PDFs. And so I want to hyperlink some views in the PDFs to illustrate the discussion.
thx 4 tips an tricks :-)
    stefan.thaens

Yes, I think you're right. I tryed the same in the HTML-protocol and it works: example:
    http://profiroll.fidom.de/pdf/01_Lastenheft_PPA_LH3_8.1_Elektrik.pdf#page=42
It would be nice to find a workaround to use this "addressing" in MS-Office!

  • How do we create a WSIL destination

    hi all ,
I need help to create a WSIL destination.
I have 7-8 Application Srevices in CAF exposed as Web Services , I need to create logical destinations for them .
I feel creating a WSIL destination is much more viable than creating a WSDL destination for each service.
I need help to create the WSIL file which i need to put in the 'destination url' field during creation.
Is it a servlet or something .
I am pretty new to Java Servlets , I know Core Java properly , so experts please help me out here.
    Thanks in advance

    Hi Experts,
        Problem :
When the Composite Application deployed on the CE server are transported onto another server. The operations that are accessed in Visual Composer (using a WSIL), do not function even when a WSIL of the same name is created at the new location with the proper parameters.
        Explanation :
For a Composite Application, we have created Composite Application Service which includes operations.
This Composite Application Service is exposed as a Web Service.
The operations are tested from WSNavigator.
These operations are then used in Visual Composer models, for which a WSIL is created and the operations are dragged  and placed on the VC canvas.
Then input and output mappings are done for all the operations.
But once the application is moved to another location, and a WSIL of the same name is created at the new location with the proper parameters
The Visual Composer models do not recognize the operations which existed earlier.
For the Visual Composer models to operate properly, a new WSIL needs to be created.
And the same WSIL has to be searched for in Visual Composer, and again the operations have to be dragged onto the canvas, and the input/output mapping has to be performed.
The tasks that are performed is similar to creating the whole application again.
    Question :
Do the above observations imply that the WSIL stores server specific information ?
What is the idea behind creating the WSIL and using that operations, if when the application is transported I have to recreate the WSIL and in turn the entire Visual Composer model ?

  • How do I create a descent PDF in InDesign?

Im creating a 2 page PDF in InDesign. When I convert it as 'smallest file size' the images come out really poor quality but when i save it in 'press quality' or any other format the file size is huge - way too big to email.
I need to get a small file sized PDF that shows good quality images when viewed. Help!
So you know I am importing the images in from Photoshop.

Your requirements are contradictory. You cannot have a combination of large images and a small PDF. Choose a realistic target; you mention "e-mailing", so you don't need "press quality" (*). Downsample your images to a screen resolution -- 120 dpi is fine, as long as your readers don't zoom in too much.
(*) Unless you need press quality. Then use it, and don't use e-mail to send the file around.

  • How can I create template documents for non-InDesign users to edit the text of later?

I'm looking to produce a small system for people within my company to edit and print labels as needed that comply with our internal design standards. I would like to use InDesign to produce a few templates for labels that people could then edit one or two fields later on, things like item name and ID number. I'm not averse to producing a small application in XCode that users can start up, enter their data and it saves the printer-ready label sheet to their desktop. I started out using Acrobat Pro, but I'm running into trouble embedding fonts for use in form fields, centering text, and outputting a filled-in pdf for print use, and not a form that submits info to an email or server. If InDesign is the wrong tool for the job of setting up a template like this, please feel free to suggest another route.

I would direct you to the Acrobat forums, personally. You can enable rich-text formatting of Acrobat form fields from within Acrobat Pro, and also IIRC embed fonts for use in form fields. If you can spec out what you mean by "fine detail that we'd need" then we, or someone over at the Acrobat forums, can tell you whether or not rich text in Acrobat forms will work for you. I suggest this to you because centering text for Acrobat form fields is dead easy, so I suspect you've not investigated the tools available in Acrobat after you've exported the PDF from InDesign.
Post-export PDF data merge sounds like, I dunno, variable-data printing? which doesn't sound like it would fit your case.

  • How to create Named Destination using Acrobat SDK

I have to bookmark a paragraph or section. I am using JSO and using textselect I am selecting a paragraph/section. Now I want to create a Named Destination so that it can be assigned to a bookmark. Kindly help me out.

  • Links to named destinations in IFRAME positioning the PDF a page and half past

I created a PDF file w/ named destinations so that I can allow the Internet user w/ browser and Acrobat Reader plug-in to link to specific sections of the PDF. The zoom is set to Fit Horizontally, and the position is the top of the page in my example PDF. I used Acrobat Pro 8.1 to create the PDF.
Problem is when trying to load the PDF into an IFRAME, displayed with the named destination using a tag like:
    <a href="http://ekensqldev5/ePadmin/documents/Raw.pdf?rand=1000#view=FitH&nameddest=Mission" target="myframe" >Click 1 </a>
When clicking on the link to the named destination, the .pdf is loaded or reloaded into an IFRAME and the page with the named destination is usually correctly displayed. Only in IE 6,7,8 the pdf will frequently (about 1 out of 4 times) be positioned a page and a half past the named destination.  Clicking to a different link, and then back to the original link will usually reposition the PDF correctly. Chrome and Firefox always position the PDF exactly to the named destination.  I'd like to know how to create the named destination so that it will always be positioned correctly, or to use a different link that will always position correctly.  I'm using Reader 9.1.2

    <iframe name="myframe" width="100%" height="800">
    </iframe>
    </body>
    </html>

I'm working with Lyle on this, and I have done some additional testing.
What I found is that the positioning for named destinations seems to work ok with IE8 when the html page and pdf file are located on one of our external web servers (rather than local intranet servers).
I am wondering if this is due to the latency involved in downloading the file, allowing the DOM to register the plugin?
I've posted a query at Microsoft's forum, but they are pointing me back to Adobe...saying they cannot know how the plugin handles rendering...even though I responded that it seems to work across the board with Firefox and Chrome.
Here is my thread in the Microsoft forum.

  • Named Destinations

I want to open an acorbat document to a specific page. I have found the following in the parameters for opeining a file. (Parameters for Opening PDF Files)
    nameddest=destination
Specifies a named destination in the PDF document.
How do you create a nameddest? A bookmark does not work
    I have the following. acrobat.exe /a "nameddest=basic" "C:\NFPA13.pdf"
The document opening but does not go to the bookmark "basic"
    Thanks
    Tim

A named destination is different than a bookmark. A bookmark may link to a named destination, but they are different things. To create a named destination, you'd set up the view (page number, zoom, etc.) and select: View > Navigation Panels > Destinations
Then click on the "Create new destination" button (little target + yellow star) in the upper-right of the Destinations pane. Then give it the name you want.
    Edit: corrected typos

  • Linking to Named Destinations

    Hi All
I have been trying to link from a web page to a "named destination" inside a .pdf document, using a URL like: www.webPageName/docName.pdf#namedDestination
The problem that I am having is that the link works the first time it is followed, but if the user scrolls to another page in the .pdf file, then follows the link again, the latest view is remembered rather than going to the named destination.
Has anyone had any experience with this or any ideas how to get to the named destination each time?
    Thanks in advance
    Geof

    Hi,Geof.
See http://www.adobeforums.com/webx/.3bc5423d/32, "Linking to within a PDF using named destinations." Many issues and tips are discussed in that thread.
To your particular question, you do not say which vers. of Acrobat you have. As you will find when you check the above link, named destinations do not work in Acrobat 7. So, if you have that vers., you will need to upgrade. Another simple tip that is also mentioned in the other thread is that you need to make sure that your Web Browser option is set to display the PDF in the browser.
Hope the thread above answers your questions. --GMc

  • Named Destinations not Working in PDF

We have book files that contain several chapters and a glossary. We created numerous named destinations (specify named destination/jump to named destination) throughout the FM files. If we check the links in the FM files, they work fine (i.e. the linked word jumps to the correct spot). However once we PDF, it loses some (not all) of those links. Anyone have any suggestions for figuring out why or fixing the issue? To PDF, we print a PS file then distill it. We are using FM 10. There appears to be no rhyme or reason for which words work and which words don't. Any help is greatly appreciated!!

FM will always have at least two versions of the maker.ini on your system. The first version is in the default FM installation folder. The other is each of the Users areas. The one(s) in the Users area contain your specific settings to the FM environment. So it looks like your display settings are set properly in FM.
It really helps seeing the FM & PDF versions.
What specific version of the Palatino TTF font are you using (mine is the 5.00 as shown in the previous reply)?
In your FM paragraph designer, you seem to be using a Justified setting. What are your settings that you have in the Advanced properties of the paragraph designer for tthe Word Spacing options? I've tried duplicating your example (using a wid range of settings), but I don't seem to have any spill over issues:
In your example, it looks like only the word-spacings are messing up. The individual word lengths look to be correct when compared ot the FM file. Did you use any special spaces (i.e. non-breaking, numeric, etc.) between any of the words. (Turn on your View > Text Symbols in FM)? Are you using any special character tag, the default Emphasis tag or did you manually apply Italic (or footnote superscipt formatting) in the paragraphs that shoot over the margins?
What PDF joboptions did you use for creating the PDF?
Are you using the AdobePDF printer instance for creating the PDFs?
In Acrobat, have you checked to see if you actually have the Palatino Linotype being used in the PDF document? (Use either the File > Properties... and then look at the Font tab or use the Edit Object tool, click on the wonky text area and the right-click to get the Proprties context menu and look at the Text tab).

  • FM10/Acrobat X 10-use named destinations for PDF linking

My company wants our documentation to be accessible from a web page. No problem there. But they want to provide users with links that open the PDF files to a specific section.
My books are in FM10. I created hypertext named destinations (example hyperlink syntax: newlink alarm) at the points where they want to open the PDF. I then saved the book to PDF, with the Create Named Destinations for All Paragraphs check box selected.
We are now trying to build a link from the web page to open the PDF at the named destination. Here is some info from the web developer on his syntax:
These zoom but do not position you to the named destination:
         <a href="Documentation/IO.OS 2.1.3 Technical Overview.pdf#nameddest=alarm&zoom=40">Tech Doc</a>
         <a href="Documentation/IO.OS 2.1.3 Technical Overview.pdf#alarm&zoom=40">Tech Doc</a>
This positions to the indicated page and zooms:
         <a href="Documentation/IO.OS 2.1.3 Technical Overview.pdf#page=20&zoom=40">Tech Doc</a>
What are we doing wrong? I've been searching the forums and community help and we've tried all the syntax examples we can find. Thanks so much for any help you can provide!

    Hi Kim,
Our team recently found a way to put custom named destinations in our FrameMaker files that can be used for linking to specific places in the PDF output (with no strange alphanumeric codes added to the named destinations).
The named destinations are anchored in FM so they stay with whatever heading/text/graphic/etc they are "attached" to, even as content is added to/removed from the FM files.
Will the following work as part of the solution you're looking for? (We're also using FM10 and Acrobat X.)
In FM, insert a new text frame object.
Type the following code in the text frame: [/Dest /Help123/Dest pdfmark
where “Help123” is the name that will appear in the PDF for this named destination. This is name you would use in your hyperlinks. Our programmers use this name for the context-sensitive help links in the user interface.
Right-click on the text frame and select Object Properties. Click to select the PostScript Code check box, then click the Set button.
NOTE: Once the PostScript Code check box is selected, the text in the text frame cannot be edited. To edit the text in the text frame, you have to first turn off the PostScript Code option, edit the text, and then turn the PostScript Code option back on.
Select the text frame object, then cut and paste to create a new instance of it. This places the text frame inside an anchored frame.
You can now “attach” the anchored frame to whatever heading/figure/text/etc the named destination should link to.
Here's the catch. To get the named destination in the PDF output, you can’t use the “Save as PDF” command in FM – you must print to PDF instead:
In the FM file, click File >> Print Setup.
Select Adobe PDF in the Name drop-down list, then click the Properties button.
Deselect the Rely on system fonts only; do not use document fonts check box, then click OK.
    Click OK.
    Click File >> Print.
Select the Generate Acrobat Data check box.
Click the PDF Setup button to define bookmark links, print quality, etc, then click the Set button when done.
    Click the Print button.
The generated PDF file should contain all the bookmarks you’ve defined as well as all the named destinations you added (with the exact names you specified).
Hope that helps. Thanks, and good luck,
    Jason

  • Export Named Destinations

In business I have to work with technical drawings that contain field equipment like sensors e.g. Each equipment has a tag (string). The CAD system generates bookmarks/named destinations for them.
However, I have to know on which page each sensor is located, without searching by hand and writing down the page number.
I found that all information I need (plus more) is stored in the Named Destinations pane in Acrobat, but it's not possible to export that information!
Is there a way to do it (and without scripting)?
    Thanks a lot!

    Almost,
It does create a nameddest but it does not give it the name specified.
Using your suggestion I found a way to create a named destination and I called it Testlink
When I tried accessing it by that given name it did not work. http://MySite/help/operation.pdf#nameddest=Testlink
When I viewed the doucment in Acrobat and asked it to show me Destination Navigation panel
I finally found my link but FrameMake renamed it to M8.newlink.Testlink.
I tested that with internet explorer and it worked http://MySite/help/operation.pdf#nameddest=M8.newlink.Testlink
Which I could live with if I can be guaranteed that the M8 will never change.
Does anyone know what the M8 represents? Is it stable or will it change over time as the document gets edited?
