How do I create a OS X installation disk?

Hi, I ran disk utility today and recieved a message stating:
"This disk needs to be repaired. Start up your computer with another disk (such as your Mac OS X installation disc), and then use Disk Utility to repair this disk.  I check the box my mid 2010 MacBook Pro came in and there is no disk.  I am currently running OS X 10.6.8.
I have tried searching online to find instructions for creating or downloading a Mac OS X installation disk, but my search has not been sucessful.
Can someone please answer the following question: How do I create or where can I download the correct Mac OS X installation disk so that I can make the repair?
Thank you in advance for your help.
Dustin

Call Apple with your machines serial number/model name located under the Apple Menu > About This Mac > More Info.
What you need are the machine specific 10.6.x disks that came with your machine, this way you get the free iLife that comes on them as well as the hardware check.
If your machine was upgraded to 10.6 from 10.5, then you have to order the 10.6.3 disks from Apple's online store. It doesn't include the free iLife.

For the downloaded OSX Lion form the Mac App Store you can use this http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/39701/lion-diskmaker to make yourself a disk.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Time Machine should be enough to make a backup of your files. Also, it should back up all folders, so open System Preferences > Time Machine > Options, and make sure that there are no folders included in the excluded items list.
If you want to create a bootable clone of your hard drive, you need to use an app like Carbon Copy Cloner or the Disk Utility's Restore feature > http://pondini.org/OSX/DU7.html

What is the capacity of the flash drive?
You might also be able to reinstall Lion without a flash drive, by booting up the computer holding the Command + R keys, and choosing Reinstall OS X.

  • Creating a Windows 7 installation disk for S12-ION (and similar)...

In a recent (now dissapeard) thread the subject of creating a backup Windows 7 Installation disk that will work with the Win7 Home Premuim OA key on the sticker on the bottom of S12-IONs.
Unfortunately that thread got stomped on because it strayed off path.
So, I've started this thread to discuss the afore mentioned subject and request that we do not discuss anything outside that that we are legally allowed to do (and I suggest it might be sensible to avoid making any kind of comment that could be deemed to be outside the acceptable usage policy for these forums).
OK, so, does anyone have any further information on this process?
I know we need to start with a (legally obtained) Win7 install disk.
This can then be altered to operate as any given (or optionally all) version of Windows 7 install disk.
However, does the disk that one alters need to be a specific version?
My guess would be that a Windows 7 Ultimate disk is most likely to work, but I suspect all Windows 7 install disks are essentially identical, bar a configuration that one needs to modify.
Now, one could also, at this point, 'slip-stream' the disk to contain specific drivers, or required other software, for the target hardware (in my case, an S12-ION).
    Would this be necessary?
What S12-ION drivers/software need to/can be slipstreamed in this way?
I'm sure there are other questions too...
Anyway, I plan to do some research, and will post what I find, but if anyone else knows anything about either of these processes, please feel free to contribute...
    Scott

'Sweet', as I believe 'the kids' say these days.
Though, I'm still going to look into slipstreaming stuff into a disk - essentially I want what I wish Lenovo provided - one disk with all the base-level drivers and Lenovo management software pre-installed - so I can manage my HDD my way.
@omgmog: it's exactly those *ways* (or, rather, those that are legal) that this thread is here to discuss...
Now, an update on my research: I need to stand corrected on one point - Microsoft haven't made it all that easy...
But, unless Lenovo come up with, I dunno, maybe an iso I can just download and burn to disk, I'm going to keep going and see if I can figure out what the best, most hassle free, way of achieving our legal right is.

  • How to use application builder to generate installation disk without compiling the the support files?

    Hello,
What I am trying to do is to use LV application builder generating an installation disk without compiling the support files. I mean:
the support fils like the help files are located on a different directory , for example, installation disk is D drive, help file directory is: D:\Help\...,  not compiled in the installation Data set.
So,  when the installation disk is running, it only copy this directory file into the destiny directory. Of course, we can write a different bat file to do this. However, beside this method, is there any way, like using LV application builder to do this without writing a batch file.  Any suggestion will be appreciated.

For LabVIEW 7.1, this can be done in a few short steps. First, add your help file as a support file in the Application Builder. Then go to the Installer tab, choose to create an installer and click on the Files button at the bottom. From this dialog (shown below), you can specify the destination for each component in your install package. If you have added your help file as a support file, it will show up in the Files in Installation list. Click on your help file to highlight it. You can now choose where to install the file to by specifying an installation destination and a subdirectory. The default subdirectory is called data, but if you want to change that, just type in a new subdirectory name as I have done below:
    Hope this helps!

  • Disk Utilities - How do I create a new Start-up Disk to repair permissions

I believe that the Disk Utilities program updates with Software Updates. To run the new Permission Repairs, I believe I am supposed to boot from a separate disk to make repairs to the master system on the computer. How do I make a separate, stand-alone disk that will launch my computer and allow me to run the new Permission Repairs.
    Thank you,
    Charles

Normally you Repair Permissions while booted from your Boot Drive, but in a pinch, you can do it from the Install Disk.
Repair Permissions uses the list of PKGs in Library Receipts to get it's info, so if you must do it from the Install Disk, you should do it once again from the Bot Disk.
Is it not booting from the Hard Disk?
Only Disk Repairs, not Permission Repairs need to be run from other than he Boot Drive.
DiskWarrior can fix both Disks & Permissions if you get the CD...

  • How do I create a single file installer for LV 6.1 App Builder Output?

I have created an application using the 6.1 App builder and it installs fine. To be able to send this app to others, I would really like to put it in something like a self extracting executable file. How can I do this with app builder or can you suggest another software to buy that will let me create this.
Thanks for any help that you can provide

You raise a number of important points. I'll answer to the best of my knowledge.
    1. Usually true. Win98/2K/XP have the Windows Installer Service built in, but 95/98/ME require InstMsiA.exe, and WinNT4 requires InstMsiW.exe. The difference is in the character set (ASCII vs. Unicode), and I don't know how that difference applies to the non-Roman alphabet installations. It's safest to include both if you're going to include one.
On the same subject, I noticed that the first thing the LV7 evaluation installer does on a Win2K box (and therefore probably on a Win98 box as well) is update the Windows Installer service, so LV7-built executables may very well require InstMsiA.exe/InstMsiW.exe on Win98/2K.
    2. I think so. I usually don't distribu
te LabVIEW EXEs as self-extracting installers, but it probably is safest to wait until the setup is complete before returning control to the self-extractor software.
    3. True. (And note that one of the circumstances under which you might repair/update msiexec is with LV7 on Win98/2K).
    4. True. Setup.exe appears to install/update msiexec if needed and then launch the MSI file.

  • BC doesn't create a win7 usb installation disk

    Hi there,
I have tried 4 different usb drives and 3 different win7 isos to run the boot camp assistant and create a usb install disk with no succes. It takes 30-40 mins to get to 75% of the process and always got the message A problem ocurred and we cant copy your files...
I got a DVD copy of the win7 ultimate but the soft doesn't recognize it as a windows intaller dvd, and it only allows me to continue if I choose the usb option with the WININSTALL usb drive name.
I had to edit my info.plist file to get the usb option as i got an imac 9,1, but bootcamp works perfectly
None of my usb drives got any problem, and my win isos are fine, i have installed them 2 or 3 times in some friends pc with no issues...
    Any thoughts?

Is this system a 64-bit version? With XP, that was not common.
Have you done any updates to AA XI? The updates may resolve the issue.

  • How do I eject a stuck Leopard installer disk with only a wireless keyboard

Today I bought a brand new mini at the Apple Store, with Tiger installed and the Leopard disk "in the box". On install, I decided to erase the disk and start fresh. I aborted after it started because I wanted to go back and partition. Sadly, it had already wiped Tiger, and now it refuses to install Leopard because it's a bare-metal install, and not an upgrade.
    Fine. Understood.
Problem is, my Leopard disk is stuck inside and I can't get it out. I've only got a wireless keyboard, and it isn't recognized during the boot, so I can't press the eject key (C?, Eject? Doesn't matter, it only sees the mouse). HELP! I'm in a Catch-22 situation.
Sure I could go wake the neighbors in the middle of the night, but isn't there some way? What happened to the paperclip trick? No more?

I did not realize that Apple had two kinds of Leopards - upgrade and full.
I would go back to the store where you bought it and demand they fix it immediately.
They also should have supplied you with a Tiger disk.

  • How do I create system installation (bootable) DVD?

    I got a broken Macbook A1342 - cracked screen/liquid damage - fixed it to a working condition.
I have now a system booting nice to Snow Leaopard 10.6.8 with some previous user logged in...
Do not have a password for it, so even updating the current time is impossible now.
I want to swap a HDD to a bigger one and install a fresh copy of Mac OS X on it (possibly newer version?).
How do I create a set of installation/bootable DVDs so I can put new/empty HDD and install system on it?
Can a Macbook "clone" itself to a set of installation DVDs? What app should I use for this?
The other option would be to nuke the laptop to a factory default state, erasing everything which on there now.
I admint, I am a newbie. This is a first contact with a Macbook computer for me... Thanks for understanding :-)

How did you delete the file? It lives inside a directory owned by the OS. It isn't possible to delete it in normal circumstances without the admin password.
I deleted it by booting my laptop to a single user mode and issuing "rm" command line instruction.
No administrator password was required to delete this file! In fact, no password at all was required.
After deleting and rebooting, Max OS X asked me to create a new administrator account, which allowed me to access to EVERY file on this drive.
Sorry this has been common knowledge for a long time (ever since OS X existed about 15 years ago), it may seem shocking to you but the reality is the same on Windows & Linux. All consumer machines have tiny little cracks that can allow an experienced user a way in.
Single user mode means you are root. When someone has root on your machine - all bets are off - they own the system. No if's, ands or buts - they have won full stop.
I keep saying this in an attempt to make it 100% clear - when someone has physical access to a computer is is practically impossible to mitigate attacks like this…
The OS is stored UNENCRYPTED by default so any way to access the disk leaves it wide open to reading and modification. In addition, removing the disk from the machine can allow you access to EVERY file - defeating all permissions that the OS uses as a basic protection (when the OS is running).
The firmware is open to all startup keyboard combinations that can boot the machine from other OS's or make it mount on other machines (Target disk mode).
Hardware has features that allow direct RAM access (Google for 'firewire direct memory access attacks' - these also exist in Thunderbolt too). Passwords be stored in memory so the RAM modules could be pulled from a running machine (PC or Mac). Encrypted memory can mitigate this little hole to an extent.
The case has screws & can be opened so RAM can be ripped out & transferred to another machine for reading (Google for 'cold boot attack').
This list is likely to go on and on if you keep thinking about it.
    To stop attacks like this…
Add an EFI password - it stops all keyboard combinations & booting into single user mode.
Add full disk encryption - it stops the ability to read the disk even if removed.
The final items to overcome are the direct memory access attacks (glue up your Firewire & Thunderbolt ports). You can also set the machine to shut down & disable sleep/ hibernation.
If you are interested subject in this I'd recommend reading how the NSA goes about making a Mac 'secure' for it's agents… (basically crippling every feature that makes it convenient).
http://www.nsa.gov/ia/_files/factsheets/macosx_10_6_hardeningtips.pdf They stopped releasing this info after 10.6, but a lot of it is still relevant, also see the iOS version if you use that.
    http://www.nsa.gov/ia/_files/os/applemac/Apple_iOS_5_Guide.pdf
TLDR: Secure your Mac before you allow any chance of physical access.

  • Imac 5,2 installation disk stops

insallation disk stops during "preparing for installation" but when I put the cd in my macbook pro the cd opens up with the normal screen. Is it my dvd drive? Can I attach the new hard drive to my macbook pro and install on the new hdd from there, if so how?

As I mentioned in my initial post, this will not work because the original media shipped with a Mac is specfic to that Mac. Therefore attempting to use the Installation Disk from an iMac on a MBP or vice versa will NOT WORK.

  • 10.4 installation disks - nowhere to be found

How do I get the pair of installation disks for Tiger?
My husband installed the first of the two 10.4 disks that came with his iMac, but he gets errors when he puts in the second disk. Now his iMac G5 cannot boot off a CD by holding down the "c" key. It can do nothing until its demand is met.

If your system can't run Leopard, or you have a business need for Tiger, call and speak to Apple about it. They may be able to assist you, although you may need to speak with a product specialist.
That second Disk thing happens frequently, the best way around it is to do a Custom install, and eliminate enough Printer Drivers, Languages, Fonts, and Applications you don't need... then it may skip #2 altogether.

how can I create a disk image of snow leopard installer disk from my Imac which runs it? It came without DVD installer, and I want to make a copy of it's OS installer but can't find out how.

You need to have the disc in order to create disk image of snow leopard installer disc. What did your machine ship with? If something later than SL, then why? If earlier, then you can buy the SL installer disc and make the disk image.
