How do i create a partition

I've Been trying to figure this out for 2 days now. How do I partition my mac book pro and put windows on that partition? Trying to finish my school work and continue using and learning on Mac Book Pro.

You use Boot Camp, and you need to backup your Mac and then read the Boot Camp Documentation before you do anything at all.

  • How do I create a partition using diskutil command

I've shrunk my original partition and now filevault2 has converted it to corestorage, as follows:
    $ diskutil list
    /dev/disk0
       #:                       TYPE NAME                    SIZE       IDENTIFIER
       0:      GUID_partition_scheme                        *500.1 GB   disk0
       1:                        EFI                         209.7 MB   disk0s1
       2:          Apple_CoreStorage                         315.3 GB   disk0s2
       3:                 Apple_Boot Recovery HD             650.0 MB   disk0s3
Now Disk Utility tells me it won't create any new partitions, and to use the command line "diskutil". I guess it doesn't work with anything other than HSF or FAT.
But, reading "man diskutil" reveals no command option to add an individual partition. Can someone help .. what is the option to add an additional partition without disturbing the others? As I read it, partitionDisk and splitPartition are both destructive. I see that resizeVolume is non-destruction, but I'm fearful of making any changes to the 4 existing partions, since they're all System partitions.
And, while I'm asking, I also don't see any remove option listed .. maybe mergePartitions, but again, I'd be reluctant to merge something into one of these system partitions for fear of killing it?
    regards,
    Paul

AFAIK, you have to turn off FV2, restart, and then repartition. But, that's just a WAG.

  • How do you create a partition for OS X Mavericks?

I have a 2011 MacBook Pro with Lion 10.7.5 installed and am wondering if there is a way that I can keep it on my computer while I try out OS X Mavericks. Since it is my understanding that you can not revert back to an old OS once you install the new one, I am looking for a way to try out Mavericks. I have heard that partitioning the the hard drive could be an option, but I do not know how. Can someone let me know of the steps, the size to allocate, and the precautions to take?
In addition, will a partition allow for me to: 1) keep everything as is and simply update my computer completely to Mavericks later, or 2) delete Mavericks and keep Lion and make my hard drive 1 entity again? Finally, how will I choose/switch between operating systems when I start & login to my computer? Thank you in advance for your help.

Let us try a different tact then.

Use Parted Magic. But you *should* backup any important files just in case, regardless of method you use. You never know. Someone could unplug your computer, a power surge might happen, etc. A cousin of mine actually did something similar while I was gaming, the extension cord has a red button which he "accidentally" pressed. I would've cracked his skull had he done it while resizing a partition.
Anyway, the partitioning scheme should be the first thing you do when you decide go this route (dual booting). I remember about a year ago I forced myself to use Linux by formatting the entire drive to ext4, except for the 2 GB + 20 GB ntfs partitions. It was what kick-started me on this path. Here's my partitioning scheme for both computers, maybe you'll get an idea and do something similar:
    Older computer:
    2 GB ntfs - MicroXP
8 GB ext4 - Arch Linux + Home dir (to keep the dot files organized in one place)
20 GB ntfs - games partition
Rest is for media, formatted as ext3 with inode 128 (so it can be loaded as Read-Only in Windows too via Ext2fsd so they won't be affected in case of a virus infection)
    New computer:
    20 GB Windows 7
10 GB Arch Linux + home dir
    50 GB games partition
Rest of the space is ext4 mounted to /media
Note that they're all primary partitions for remembering easier (sda1, sda2, sda3, sda4) instead of a combination of primary and extended which would probably look like sda1, sda5, sda6, sda7, etc.

  • How to create a partition using Boot camp assistant 4.0.1 ?

Hi, i would like to "Partition" my drive and not "Install" windows 7 like the assistant asks me... I wanted to increase the size of my bootcamp partition. So i used winclone to save it and now to restore it i need a NTFS partition that is normally created with the bootcamp assistant. But with the latest (4.0.1) i have no choice to partition and report the installation for later. As it was before.... So can someone tell me how i can create that partition on my drive? Because when i choose the size and then click install, the assistant requires a disk that i don't have. Thx for your help.

So i called apple today and the outcome is that i cannot partition my disk with BCA 4.0.1. Not anymore. The only way to do it is to go back to Snow leopard, with BCA 3.0 to partition your disk. and then upgrade to lion once you made your partition with BCA 3.0. And another thing: you can only install Windows 7 not Vista or XP. with BCA 4.0.1 its the only one allowed. So for everyone out there trying to increase the size of your Bootcamp partition using Winclone, it's not possible with Lion anymore. I ended up bying a windows 7 copy at retail price.... and start over again..

  • Using bootcamp to create a partition.

How do you create a partition using bootcamp without installing windows? I'm using lion and trying to install Windows XP. I heard you can do it this way.

There is a long discussion in this forum about installing XP with Lion.
IMHO, it is not worth the effort. Does not work 100%. There are no drivers or support for Lion and XP. XP is at end of life, insecure, and not supported even by Microsoft.
Search this forum for XP and Lion.

  • How can I create a new partition to install Windows 7 by not using Bootcamp

How can I create a new partition to install Windows 7 by not using Bootcamp?

If you want to dualboot you have to use boot camp i think. I think you have already a full disc and cannot make another partition I'm I right?
Your question seems a bit blurry so I'm giving you a general tip here.
If you want to just try the beta you can always use Sun's "Virtualbox".

  • How to create a partition on a Satellite A200-14D?

    Hello,
I have a problem with my partitions as I first had on the notebook 2 apparent partitions on the HDD, labelled C:\Vista
(Vista Home Premium) and E:\Data ( 57GB and respective 55GB ). I've decided to format vista because I had some problems with FN key. After using the Product Recovery CD in order to install fresh windows I've relished I have only one partition in total of aprox 115GB. I wanted to have at least two partitions, so I used again the CD to reinstall windows and try to find how I can make a partition during the installation process. After I chose language there was a window saying I can adjust my disk space, so I did, distributing 40GB for the partition where windows should be installed, presuming that the rest of HDD label will be distributed to a second partition.
After I reinstalled and made all updates I had a big surprise seeing that I have only 1 partition with 39GB. Now I used device manager to see what's wrong. I went to the HDD section properties/volume and clicked on populate. there it shows the windows partition of 40gb and unallocated space of aprox 72 GB. My main problem is I need to have that space partitionated and since the Recovery disk does not give me this option is there any other way vista can make a partition with the remaining space? I look forward for some advice please.
    Thank you

    Hi
Dont worry dude there is everything ok. It seems the partition was created but not activated.
After installation of the Windows Vista please go to the disk management.
There you will find the first partition C and maybe a second or only a free space.
If you want you can shrink the partition C firstly. After this process you can right click on the free space and create a second partition or add the free space to the second partion which is already created.
    Good luck and best regards

    Exactly 1TB? Slightly under/slightly over?
Traditional Solaris disk labels are in VTOC format, but this format cannot describe disks larger than 1TB. So EFI labels must be used on disks larger than 1TB. Setup is slightly different.
Are these physical disks or LUNs from a SAN array? If they are array LUNS, it is often the case that they don't have a Sun label of any type. So...
    #1 Apply a Solaris label
If the LUNS don't have a label (when selected in 'format', it gives a warning that no label is present and offers to apply a label immediately). When run non-interactively, format assumes "yes" for any questions. So all you'd have to do is select every disk to have it apply labels to any unlabled disk. Run 'format' once and find the highest number (maybe it's 50 for you). Create a text file that looks like this:
    disk 1
    disk 2
    disk 3
disk 50Then feed that to format like this:
    # format -f /tmp/disklist or whatever you've named the file.
#2 Apply the partition layout to all disks you want.
You asked if you should do the same procedure, but I don't see that you've actually done anything above other than print out the existing layout. Take one of your 48 drives and partition it the way you want manually (set the slices to the sizes that you want). Then you can copy the layout of that disk to others. You only want to do this between disks/LUNs of the same size. As an example, if you've explicitly partitioned c1t0d0 and you want to apply this to c1t1d0, do this:
    # prtvtoc /dev/rdsk/c1t0d0s2 | fmthard -s - /dev/rdsk/c1t1d0s2Repeat for all of your other disks.

  • How to create recovery partition in new(changed) HDD.

my new HP pavilion g4 laptop HDD have crased, then I replce it by HP care. I upload original win 7 by recovery disk(DVD) but when I open my computer it shows only one partition (C drive, there is no recovery partition and HP tool.
So how to creates recovery partition by recovery disk(DVD)...........please help me.

    Creating the recovery partition
Right-click the start orb, and start 'Disk Management'.
Shrink the C: drive by let's say 20-30GB.
Then create a new Partition and assign the R: label to it and name it RECOVERY.
Then open command prompt as administrator and type: 'recimg /createimage <directory>',
In this case: 'recimg /createimage R:\' to save it on the new partition.
This step may consume a lot of time.
Now we need to register the newly created recovery image: 'recimg /setcurrent <directory>'
    'recimg /setcurrent R:\'
    Voila you are done.
    Restoring from recovery partition
You may want to use this restoring method by default, because it is the easiest way to do so if your recovery partition is still intact. If not, look at the other recovery methods to see which suits you best. This is usually the way you reset or refresh your Windows installation if you purchase a computer from a brand like Lenovo instead of building one yourself
Press the Windows-key + C to open the charms bar or swipe in from the right.
    Click Settings.
    Click Change PC Settings.
Click Update & Recovery in the menu on the left.
    Click Recovery.
If all your documents are safe and sound in your user folder, you can use Refresh your PC without affecting files. However I still recommend taking a back-up... If you want to do a complete reinstallation of Windows and also clean your user folder in the process then choose Remove everything and reinstall Windows.

  • How do I create a bootable hard drive partition?

    Hello,
Would someone out there be kind enough to give me step by step instructions for creating a partition on my external hard drive that I could use to boot my computer in the event of an emergency? I understand how to use Backup for my files, but I want to know how to make the hard drive bootable, as well.
    Thanks!
    Eli Garfinkel

When you say step by step I'm guessing you're saying you are a little inexpierenced so I'm going to give it to you very thoroughly.
First: If you are not using this external HD for anything else then there is no need to partition and you should skip to "Making Bootable Clone"
    "Making the Partition":
    1) Plug in the external HD.
    2) Launch Disk Utility
    3) Click on the ext. HD in the left hand column
    4) Click on the Partitions tab.
    5) Create the number of partitions by clicking the dropped down menu under "Volume Scheme"
5a) The partition that will be the bootable one should be as big as the internal HD.
    6) Format it as Mac OS X Extended (Journaled)
    7) Check the Mac OS 9 Drivers...just in case.
    8) Click the Partition button in the bottom right and let DU do its work.
    "Making Bootable Clone"
-I highly recommend you buy the $27.95 copy a SuperDuper! (shirtpocket.com)
-It will allow for easy incremental backups, which can be done each day, that will keep you up-to-date.
    1) Once you've downloaded SuperDuper! & have the disk partitioned open SuperDuper!
    2) In the "Copy" box select your internal HD.
    3) In the "to" box select the partition.
    4) Make sure "using" says "backup-all files"
    5) Select "Options" button and under the "During Copy" make chose the first option. This erases the partition and then copies the internal onto the external.
-After this is completed you can continue to do this, daily. The only difference is you'll have to change the "During Copy" in the "Options" button to the second option. This is the "Smart Update".
-A Smart Update will delete or create files on the ext. HD so it mirrors the internal. The results is the ext. HD is exactly like the internal and it only takes 10-15min. You ext. HD will always be up to date then. You can run this every night.
-This will result in an exact clone and you can boot form this partition if you ever need to.

  • How to create another partition on mac and restore from time machine

I want to create another partition on my macbook running on OS X Yosemite. I want to recover a time machine back up on this partition. Basically this is a backup of my other old PC which I saved on a time machine external hard disk and now I want to create it as a new separate partition which I can log into to as opposed to continuous to connected to it via USB.
Any advise on how I can do that?

    Hi Patrick,
Thanks for the that great tip.
In that time machine back up I have some applications for e.g. MS office etc and I wanted it to be like a virtual machine as such that I launch when I want to use the applications, see my data etc....I have bought parallels as that allows you to have multiple virtual machines on your laptop whether these are multiple mac images as time machine backups or linux, Microsoft Windows 7, 8 etc....
Thats what I eventually want to do here...
This feature that you provided is also of good reference for me in future.

    I have an HP EliteBook 2760p using Windows 7 - 64-bit Professional
My original problem is that I couldn't create the Repair Disc
I found out that the problem was with a file that was on the recovery partition
I backed up the recovery partition from the same make and model computer
I reformatted the partition and recovered the backup to the reformatted partition
    It didn't work
How do I create the recovery partition  I have the 2 disks that came with the tablet PC

If you do a factory restore using HP recovery discs it will put everything back including recovery partition. I don't know if any way to manually re-create the recovery partition.
NOTE: back up your files as Factory Restore wipes ALL data.
