How do I create a shared network drive between a remote Mac and a remote PC?

I have read blog after blog to try to find a simple solution to my problem, with no luck.
I have two computers. 1 is a Macbook Pro Retina with paralelled-Window 7 access. The other is a Windows 7 PC. The two computers are remote. ie one is on a home network in 1 state, the other is on a home network in another state.
The PC is running a software program that has a large data file with sensitive material. I want my Mac to be able to share this data file. I am told I need to set up a network connection between the two. I have tried doing a Microsoft VPN connection through the paralleled-Windows 7 mac and the Windows 7 PC. I am setting up the network to have the PC act as the server, thereby creating a network connection directly to the PC's IP address. I receive several different errors for the network tunneling when trying to connect. I believe this is because both computers are running on home networks, rather than one running on a secured work network. I read every blog out there about resolving these error messages I get, but again no luck.
Is there an easier way to resolve my problem? Can the data file be stored on some sort of cloud server that would allow constant updating. For instance, we may both be in the software at the exact same time on our remote computers, but we need whatever I save on my mac to be accessible immediately to the PC.
If anyone has any VPN software suggestions, cloud storage suggestions, or input on the method I have already tried, please help!
Thank you!

I don't know if this will work for you or not but you might want to consider something like TeamViewer. Its a great program that can not only be used to remote control any pc or mac but you can also transfer files as well. Here is the link for more information.
http://www.teamviewer.com/en/index.aspx
Of course someone will have to be at the site to install it the first time and then it can be used remotely.

    Hi,
If you're in a domain, then as S Guna siad, you should guarantee appropriate permissions to users.
If you're not in a domain, then you can use "Password protected sharing", but this setting doesn't have effect on computers in a homegroup
Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Network and Sharing Center\Advanced sharing settings, All networks, turn on "Password protected sharing"

  • Can I Use a network drive to work with Mac and Windows?

Is it possible to introduce a network drive which can be accessed by both Mac and PC? I manipulate images in Photoshop on my Mac but the software I use to create slide shows is only available in PC format. This software is used more or less universally in the area of photography I am invo;ved with so changing is not an option. Can anyone advise me please.
    TC

Yes sure. Any NAS type drive formatted in any way will work. Both Mac OS X and Windows communicate by Ethernet Packets to a Networked drive and it is up to the NAS device OS to translate those Ethernet Packets to the format used on the drive.
Even if you are using a standard external drive connected to a Router or another computer, which is what a NAS is (A self contained computer with Operating System and hard drives), that router or NAS box does all the translating.

  • How to Best Create a DVD that will play on BOTH Mac and Windows

Hello - Looking for some direction. How can I create an iDVD DVD that will play on both Mac & Win? I can not find a solution that will accomplish this. What I did was create an .img then burned to DVD. This plays fine on my Mac & on home stereo DVD but not on a windows machine. The Windows machine can "read" the DVD fine but WIndows Media Player can not play it. Do I need to have folks use a special player on WIndows? Is there another format the I should have iDVD output? I need to send some DVDs to college coaches for my son and am trying to do this the best way without knowing what platform (Mac or WIn) they will be using. What is the best approach?
Thanks in advance for your help,
    David

    Hi
There are two ways to burn a DVD.
    • as a Data-DVD (eg including a video.img file or any data)
    • as a Video-DVD
    A. Data DVD is what You creat by just popping in a DVD disk and OK to format it.
    B. Video-DVD - You make from within iDVD and insert thed DVD WHEN iDVD asks for it
(OR - Via Disk Util tool - Still introduced when asked to do it !)
(or via Roxio Toast™ - STILL not inserted until asked to do this)
So what You've done is a Data-DVD with Your movie as an .img file on it.
    • Can only be playbacked on Your Mac
    Open "Disk Util tool"
Then on Dasktop - Double click the .img file so that it creates a fake DVD disk
Then in "Disk Util tool" - select it and click the Burn (Nuclear) button
THEN insert a new DVD WHEN asked to do this.
NOW ! ! Select a lower Burn Speed eg 4xDVD - This will result in a DVD with few burn errors and
a PC will read it easier !
Use of quality DVD brand is also important - I use Verbatim
    I use DVD-R
    Good Luck - Bengt W

  • Sharing external drive between PC & 2 mac laptops - ntfs VS fat32 WARs

and I am having issues with file format.
my goal: to use one of my external drives as an easily sharable storage place through the airport extreme for media, and basic work dosc for me and my wife.
we have a PC desktop and each have mac laptops - me a macbook pro and her a mac pro.
I have an external 380 gig drive that I'd like to use thru the airport extreme. it is currently formatted ntfs and of course airport will only properly work with drives formatted as Fat32.
PROBLEM - command line in windows will not reformat this as a FAT32 drive as WIN XP only supports FAT32 drives up to 32 gig - at least through the format command.
questionm - how do I format this drive so a all or at least a large portion of it is accessible through my wireless network? ? (also why won't airport extreme work with ntfs drives?)
    again:
    pc desktop running xp pro
    mac book pro
    mac pro

ps: thanks in advance for any suggestions here

  • How do I make my FireWire/USB Drive work on a Mac and windows computers

I have an Iomega Fire wire/USB 2.0 Potable hard drive I know that to use the hard drive on Windows the hard drive must be set for both Windows and Mac I forgot where to go on my Mac to do this. Its been a while since I had to do this thanks.

The drive must be formatted as MS-DOS for it to be seen natively by a windows machine. The problem with this is you are limited to a 2gb file size limit - which can be a real problem with video files.
There is a PC program called MacDrive that will enable a windows machine to see and access Mac formatted drives. Mac formatted drives do not have the file size limit.
    Good luck,

  • Is there a way to create a shared net conn. between Airport and Ethenet?

Is there a way to create a shared internet connection between one airport computer and another via ethernet?
I have one computer (lets call this computer 'A') connected to the net via Airport which connects to a router, which is directly connected to my ADSL line.
However, my other computer (computer 'B') is not located within range of this wireless router.
Is there a way for me to send my internet connection via computer A to computer B, via an Ethernet cable or Airport connection or otherwise?
    ADSL---Wireless Router---(Airport)---Computer A---(Ethernet)---Computer B

Is there a way for me to send my internet connection via computer A to computer B, via an Ethernet cable or Airport connection or otherwise?
Yes, it's called Internet Sharing, and here's how to set it up...
To setup for Internet Sharing (Wireless to Wired):
    Enable Software Firewall (Computer A)
System Preferences > Sharing > Firewall
o Click Stop to start the software firewall
    Setup the Network
ADSL Modem > (Ethernet cable) > (Ethernet port) Wireless Internet Router > (wireless) > (AirPort Card) Computer A (Ethernet port) > (Ethernet cable) > (Ethernet port) Computer B
    Setup Port Order (Computer A)
System Preferences > Network > Show > Network Port Configurations
o Verify that "AirPort" and "Built-In Ethernet" are enabled.
o Verify that "AirPort" is at the top of the list, followed by "Built-In Ethernet."
    o Click "Apply Now."
Configure the Internet Connection (Computer A)
    System Preferences > Network > Show > AirPort > TCP/IP
    o Configure IPv4: Using DHCP
o Configure IPv6: Automatically or Off
    Enable Internet Sharing (Computer A)
System Preferences > Sharing > Internet
o Share your connection from: AirPort
o To computers using: Built-In Ethernet (checked) (Note: Uncheck all other entries in the list.)
    o Click Start

  • Creating a folder alias on a shared network drive

    Hi,
I have a folder that is housed on my computer that I would like an alias of on my company's shared network drive. I will have access to the shared network drive from my home computer either through Citrix or a VPN, so I would like the alias on that drive so that it will reflect any changes I make to the files within either from my work or from my home computer. My question therefore is, how do I create an alias of a folder on a shared network drive? I tried creating an alias on my local drive and then dragging it to the shared network drive, but that just copied the folder and removed the alias.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Nevermind. I must have copied over the original folder the first time instead of the alias, as a simple drag and drop of an alias folder just worked fine for me.

  • How do I get the second HD to be a shared network drive??

PowerPC G5 / dual 2Ghz - used as our file server.
    running OS X Server - v.10.3.9
Have one internal HD - 160GB partitioned into two drives (General Access & Archive) in the Public folder of this computer
Appears as Network: Local / G5 Server. When you click the connect button you get a choice of which volume to mount/connect to (ie. General Access; Archive or both)
Running out of space on the drive so I purchased a second 160GB HD. Installed it, formatted it (with DiskUtility), named it, and copied all files from Archive (partition)
The thought is to make this new 160GB drive Archive and to remove the partition from the original 160GB HD and have that be just General Access.
How do I get the second HD to be a shared network drive??
Also can I remove the partition to the first without having to clone it and reformat?

    Roam & Ali B,
    Thanks!!
    Next dumb question(s).
We have a laCie FW external HD that I was using as a back-up drive (temporarily)
I do have some files on it that I have to bring back onto the server to use. I get a admin user&passsword prompt every time I have to copy something back. It usually copies over a locked file that can only be deleted from the Server terminal.
    1. Why isn't this working without the admin prompt? I used DiskUtil to format it before I could use it.
    2. How exactly do I "clone" the current content - its not a simple 'Select All' and drag&drop? Is it going to bring over the partition as well??
    3. Once I have everything on the FW HD, re-boot using it as the System, and re-format the original 160GB HD - will I run into #1.

  • Can I use it for both a backup drive and shared network drive?

Is it possible to use the Time Capsule for both an automatic backup drive for my Mac AND use it as a shared network drive to store my large library of home videos?  If so, does it require partitioning the drive and are there instructions available?  Alternatively, if I store my home videos on its own network drive, will Time Capsule backup this drive too?  If I don't want any external drives tethered to my mac, how would set up the  2 drive scenario, so that home video drive can be shared on the network?
To be specific, I'm looking for a networked drive solution that allows me to do the following:
    1) automatically back up my Mac
    2) act as the primary storage drive for 750GB of the kids home videos (to save room on Mac) [Side question - ]
    3) have the ability to watch the home videos on both my family room Apple TV (is this even possible?) and my kitchen Mac Mini display (would my Mac's iMovie's library be able to include my home video content  that is stored on a network drive, or does it require the content to be  on the Mac hard drive?).
    4) If I use a two drive solution  (time capsule backup and cheaper second drive), I want to be able to have Time Capsule back up the home video content on the second drive.
    5) I do not want any drive tethered to my Mac, only wirelessly connected.  Would the second drive be connected to the Time Capsule?  How would this be set up?
    Many thanks!

basically yes, but i wouldn't recommend it.
If so, does it require partitioning the drive and are there instructions available?
the disk in the TC can't be partitioned in the traditional way. but you can use disk utility to create a "fixed-size" sparse disk image on the TC's disk for use with other data. use the instructions here, just leave out the encryption part.
Alternatively, if I store my home videos on its own network drive, will Time Capsule backup this drive too?
    no.
time machine can not back up from network drives.

    1) automatically back up my Mac
    2) act as the primary storage drive for 750GB of the kids home videos (to save room on Mac) [Side question - ]
consider a NAS that is time machine compatible.
    3) have the ability to watch the home videos on both my family room Apple TV (is this even possible?) and my kitchen Mac Mini display (would my Mac's iMovie's library be able to include my home video content  that is stored on a network drive, or does it require the content to be  on the Mac hard drive?).
it's possible to stream content stored on a TC (or NAS) to TV. using home sharing, your mini would be able to access files in homeshared libraries.
it doesn't matter where the files are stored as long as iTunes knows they are there. in other words, the content needs to be in an iTunes/TV friednly format and in your iTunes library - that doesn't mean the content can't be stored on an external HD, a TC, or a NAS.
    4) If I use a two drive solution  (time capsule backup and cheaper second drive), I want to be able to have Time Capsule back up the home video content on the second drive.
What can Time Machine back up, and where can it put it’s backups?
    5) I do not want any drive tethered to my Mac, only wirelessly connected.
IMO, your best course of action is to get a NAS. if you're interested, i can highly recommend this device by Synology.
Synology NASes play very well with Macs and have excellent backup features on board. given enough space (i have 4x2 TB drives installed) you can store your media files there, use time machine to backup your Macs to it and can use the on-board backup solution to back up the whole shebang to a USB drive connected to the NAS.

  • Map shared network drive from a Win XP pro machine to use with Time Machine

I have an external USB hard drive connected to a Windows XP Pro computer. The drive has two partitions that I created on my mac. One is a formated for Time Machine and one formated in fat for windows.
When connected by USB to the mac I can access both partitions and Time Machine works great. When connected to the XP I can only see and access the fat partition but Time Machine does not see it.
My goal is to have the external drive connect by USB to the XP machine (because it is always on and connected) and use the external drive to backup the pc by USB and the Mac with time machine over my wireless.
Can I do this and where am I going wrong?

Tech support advised me that this will not work. Time Machine can not backup to an shared network drive unless unless it is connected to Time Capsule. No doubt this is a marketing strategy and not a design flaw.

To give a sensible answer, a little more information is needed.
