How can I create a smart playlist of least played complete albums? (of a specific genre, say jazz)
What I would like to do is to have a playlist that will always automatically pull the least played albums of a specific genre (ideally, but not necessarily, with a random album play within that playlist) Hope you are getting the concept!

As you say, you can't access the Gapless property in a smart playlist rule.
The obvious way that comes to mind would be to create another playlist with stuff to exclude from your final list and put the gapless tracks and anything else that won't filter out easily into it.
Yes you say but I have oodles of gapless tracks and I don't want to gather them up by hand.

Basically I have a number of playlists containing specific types of songs, and also have an "All Songs" playlist that contains everything from these playlists. It would be really helpful if the songs I add to the smaller playlists could also be added to an "All Songs" smart playlist automatically. How would I do this? I tried to make a smart playlist by selecting "Playlist" "is" "[names of each playlist]." But nothing happened. Is there something more I'm supposed to do? I'm not really familiar with how smart playlists work, so I may be doing something wrong.

Check up at the top of your smart playlist rule for "All Songs". Is it currently saying "Match all of the following rules"?

SERIOUSLY!!! I was pretty shocked when I realized iTunes DJ isn't on my iPhone. It seems like it should be, seeing as 1) it's one of the main perks/rewards of going through the hassle of rating all your songs, and 2) for many people (including myself) most music listening time is spent on their iDevices (listening in the car, at work, etc.). So the fact that it's not there to be utilized is pretty weird and slightly upsetting. Also the DJ mix should sync between iDevice and computer so you can continue listening to the same list going to and from home.

That is a view option, not a smart playlist option. You can enable it for any playlist (smart or regular) by choosing View > Column Browser > Show Column Browser.
In that same menu, you can choose exactly which columns appear on the left.

When i connect my phone to pc using Itunes these "Ghost" playlists do not even show up when I click "on my phone". Okay. Try checking "manually manage music and videos", and then click the flippy triangle next to your device. Then select the items you want to delete and just press Delete on your keyboard.
Uncheck when you're done.

Creating New Smart Playlist by Album name - Missing From Drop Down List

I hope i'm not the only person with this issue but since upgrading to Windows Vista i have noticed a very annoying little bug with iTunes.
When trying to create a Smart Playlist there is no longer the option from the dropdown list to create a smartplaylist using the perameter 'Album'.
Any lists created when my PC was using XP still have the correct parameters in place but you cannot create any ne ones.
I have tried creating a new library without success. If i revert back to XP there is no problem.
Are Apple aware of this issue? If not, how do i contact them to report this bug?

my setup uses an intricate system of smart playlists building other smart playlists. when i add a new "theme", as i call it, like "party", "chart", "sad", "happy", etc, i dont want to have to go back through and create dozens of smart playlists each time... that is a job for my friend, applescript!

I am also interested in an answer on this. I'm not an AppleScript guru but I'm learning. My goal is to create a Smart Playlist with two criteria -- one is that the tracks exist in a specific other Smart Playlist and the other is that the track's play count is less than the average play count of all tracks in the other playlist.
I have already managed to use AppleScript to find the average play count of all tracks in a selected Smart Playlist, I just don't yet know how to use that to automatically generate a second Smart Playlist.

When I tried to do this I chose smart playlist, album starts with, and then did it again for each podcast I wanted. That didn't work. If it can be done how do you do it?

Hi Try a Reboot press & hold power button & menu button hold both down until you see Apple Logo . Then go to music click on play list and try to make one. Cheers Brian
