How do I create a TXT record?

I'm trying to figure out how to create a TXT record on OS X Server 4's DNS server.  Specifically for the Caching service's multiple public IP address requirements.  I'm, of course, using OS X Server's DNS implementation, but see no definitive method for creating TXT records.  I see there is a Text field for most record types, but usage is confusing at best.  Why would Apple choose not to implement TXT records, when this is a requirement of functionality for other supported services?  Not to mention, a good DNS implementation needs to have TXT record support.  Achieving this is trivial on Linux/Unix or Windows, but I can't even find reference to the BIND configuration file for Server 4, and it is no longer in the /var/named/ directory.
Also, if anyone can point me to any documentation covering these services in detail, that would also be appreciated.

Thanks for the reply,
I actually found the "named" directory just before reading this, and was able to edit the respective zone file, like a standard BIND configuration file.  I understand that Server.app will create a TXT record using the inheritance of the A record label, when using the Text field of the new A record dialog box.  However, this will not suffice if you need to create a TXT record starting with an underscore (_), as is required by Apple's own Caching service, when using different public IPs for clients.  Go ahead and try to make a TXT record entry for "_aaplcache._tcp", with the Server.app GUI and let me know how it goes...I'll answer that for you; "Not well, Mike."  This could likely function correctly if Apple implemented RFC 2181, in Server.app's GUI.  This expands the character set allowed for DNS names, stating that any binary string may be utilized for DNS labels.  Luckily, Apple implements BIND correctly, and serves the TXT entry when queried.  It also appears to leave the zone file intact when modifying other entries with the GUI.  The Server.app GUI does not parse the manually created TXT record however, and thus must be modified and maintained by hand.

You're setting up internal DNS services, you referenced your ISP DNS servers and you should not have, and now those servers have no translations for your hosts. This is a common misconfiguration.
See [configuring DNS on Mac OS X Server|http://labs.hoffmanlabs.com/node/1436] for how to set up your internal DNS server.
And if there are any references to your ISP DNS servers here (within your client settings, within your server settings, your Airport settings, etc), then you're usually going to have DNS and connectivity problems. You're running a server now, so you'll be running your own services, and (particularly because of NAT here) referencing only your own DNS server(s).
You may be setting up external DNS (if and when you need that), but that should happen after you set up your internal DNS. The above article has a link to setting up external DNS, when you get around to that, if/when you need in-bound connections into your LAN.

  • How can you create a voice recording and save it as an mp3?

I want to create a voice recording and save it as an mp3.  How can I do that on the MAC?  Right now I can only think of recording the voice in iMovie, but it does not have a choice to save as an mp3.

Rather that iMovie, you may want to check our Audacity.
It's a free, open-source audio editor and recorder.
You can easily save a recording as an MP3.

  • How do I create a txt box in Photoshop on a picture?

I have to buy photoshop for my son's classes anyway.  But I am currently on the 30 day free trial trying to learn how to use it myself for a class reunion.  I have already wasted 4 days and made very little progress.  I removed some blemishes.  Took out some unsightly background items.  I can place text in a picture.  But how do I place a solid coloured text box in a picture?

Add a new empty layer on top of your image. User the rectangle marquee tool to draw out the size of the rectangle you want. Fill the selection with the color you want. Add a text layer over that layer.

    Hi,
You can create a TXT record by using DNS Manager on a server running Windows Server 2008 that has the DNS server role installed. Also, you can use the DNSCmd command to create a TXT record.
For more information, here is an article for your reference:

  • TXT records in mavericks server

I am trying to create a TXT DNS record in Server 3.02. I have read the docs and followed the steps in there. They state that creating a service record is the way to create a TXT record, but no matter how many times I try no record is ever created!
Has anyone tried this in Server? Is there a way I can just go the the Command Line and modify a file? If so (and I'm sure you can), which file is 'managed' by the DNSsection of Server?

If you use Server.app, follow these steps:
1:  Select DNS from the list of services
2:  Click the Gear action button and select "Show All Records"
3:  Press the Plus button (which is now a menu) and select Add Machine Record
4:  Complete the fields, adding your TXT value in the Text box.
This will add the TXT record next to the A record and the values will look like this in the zone file:
    happy.carbontechnologies.com.         10800 IN A        172.16.0.254
                                                                10800 IN TXT      "hello"
If you want to manually add these, then look in /Library/Server/named for your zone files.  Be mindful that modification outside Server.app may result in odd behaviors.

  • SBS 2011 Make TXT record visible in DNS

After creating a TXT record in my domain under my domainname.local in an effort to qualify for the dig lookup by GoDaddy, the Dig cannot see the TXT record.   To create TXT record, I right click DomainName.local and select "Other New Records",
choose TXT and name the record DZC and give it the text value as indicated by GoDaddy.  What needs to happen for that record to show up in a DNS lookup?

  • PowerShell 3: Add multistring TXT record to DNS

    Hi,
I have been working on a PS script for Windows 2012 to create DNS records for AirPrint services. I can get SRV, PTR records created fine. I am having a bit of trouble with TXT records though.
I am using the following command to create a TXT record:
    $TXTData = "line1`r`nline2`r`nline3"
    Add-DnsServerResourceRecord -ZoneName testdomain.internal -
    Name MyNewTXTRecord -Txt -DescriptiveText $TXTData
This works fine and creates a record with multiple lines in it.
There are 2 problems. If the length of TXTData is greater than 255 characters then PS won't process the command. I know each string in a TXT record can only be 255 chars long, but there can be multiple strings. The `r`n is creating the multiple strings.
The second, is that if I run a command to retrieve that same record, I only ever get the contents of the first string. So, the code below only gives me 'line1'. This could be a formatting thing, but I just can't seem to see the rest of the record.
    $record = Get-DNSServerResourceRecord -ZoneName testdomain.internal -Name MyNewTXTRecord
    $record.recorddata
The big issue is the creation of the records. I'm a bit lost, so any ideas?
    Cheers
    Craig.

    Show output:
    Add-DnsServerResourceRecord
    -ZoneName testdomain.internal
    -Name MyNewTXTRecord
    -Txt -DescriptiveText "a","b","c","d"
    dnscmd /EnumRecords testdomain.internal MyNewTXTRecord

  • Don't see TXT record

Hello, I created a TXT Record to validate my domain in Office 365 and up to now it does not work. When i do a nslookup on my domain name, i don't see it and Office 365 don't find it too. ---------------------------------------- Operating System: Windows 8 Browser: Chrome 26.0.1410.64

I am also having this problem and have waited 24 hours now for the TXT record to propagate with no success. I have attached screen captures of the record instructions from office 365 and the record I created in business catalyst. Looks ok to me but perhaps I am missing something here. I also tried entering "@" in the host name box but that returns an error, I think it said invalid host name.

  • How to create a DNS record for a domain itself (without a hostname)

    Hi,
Normally, you can create a DNS record that points to the zone itself, e.g.:
    @               10800 IN A    196.197.200.201
How do you accomplish that on a Mac OSX Lion Server? The DNS requires you to enter a hostname and it does not accept "@" as the hostname as it normally appears in the zone file.
(manually modifying the host file does not work - I tried that ;-) )
    Any help is appreciated
    Thanks

Create either a blank record with a ., or a FQDN such as 'domain.com.' (note the trailing dot). Either of these should map to the domain name.

  • How Can I Create a Record/Report Grid on a Page

I want to build a page on which I can display a MySQL table record grid as a report, so that a user can select certain lines for further processing (e.g. emailing "action due" information to a customer).  I've searched and searched, but everything I find just dances around the edges.
For example, I want to be able to display the results of a MySQL query into a customer detail, based on an action date in the records, in a row/column grid, so that those with an action due can be selected, and an email sent to the customers reminding them to post the required action code.  The columns in each row would include: Customer ID, Employee/Applicant's Name, DOB & SSN, the current Action Date and Code.
OK, well I guess after two weeks without a response, I must be some kind of outcast, though I don't know why/how that happened.  While I'm new to web programming, I'm trying to learn, and attempting to follow the rules, when I know what they are.

    Hi,
The process is to first populate the values in the lookup(can be a part of main table or qualified table) and hierarchy tables. Once done, create the main table record and then fill the details in the qualified table for that particular main table record. Since the details of the qualified table are stored in the link established between main table record and qualified table record hence you cannot first create a qualified table record before creating main table record.
Also when you first create a main table record containing set of lookup & hierarchy fields then you wont find the values in the drop down since you have not filled the lookup tables, hence we always fill the lookup table data first.

  • How to create a txt file, load it, modify it and then save it again?

    Hello everyone!
I have a question and I hope you'll help me.
I'd like to create a txt file (please see attached pdf file) but I don't know how. I've tried many methods but it's not working
The user should be able to change the parameters (for example "Time", "Time Type" ...etc) and the corresponding values from the Front Panel.
The number of section (Begin Line......End Line)  is 128.  Means, the final file should contain  "Begin Line1....End Line1"   till  "Begin Line128....End Line128".
Please, take a look at the attached file to see how does the structure of the file look like.
Note:  the seperator between a parameter (example, "Time") and its value (example, "7" in the section "Begin Line1....End Line1") is a colon( " : " ) and not an equal (" = ").
Thank you very much for your help.
    Best regards

    Hi
    thanks for your answers.
I'm using LV 8.2  and my file should be saved in txt.
Initially the file doesn't exist. So, the user choose the parameters and their values from the Front Panel
and then hit a button to create that file. The user should be able to reload (Front Panel button) the created file, modify it or not and then resave it.
Before hitting the "create file" button the user define (on the Front Panel)  the number of sections ("Begin Line.....End Line") to be created.
I joined a VI here just to explain the idea. May be that can help you to help me.
    I appreciate yoyur help!

  • How do I create a DVD with no theme, i.e., it plays what was recorded when inserted in the player?

How do I create a DVD with no theme, i.e., it plays what was recorded when inserted in the player?  Nothing extra, just the recorded content.

    Hi
    No Menu on DVD
    from. Mishmunken
How to create a DVD in iDVD6 without menu (there are several options)
    1. Easy. Drop your iMovie in the auto-play box in iDVD's Map View, then set your auto-play item (your movie) to loop continuously.
Disadvantage. The DVD plays until you hit stop on the remote
    2. Still easy. If you don't want your (auto-play) movie to loop, you can create a black theme by replacing the background of a static theme with a black background and no content in the drop-zone (text needs to be black as well).
Disadvantage. The menu is still there and will play after the movie. You don't see it, but your disc keeps spinning in the player.
    3. Still quite easy but takes more time. Export the iMovie to DV tape, and then re-import using One-Step DVD.
Disadvantage. One-Step DVD creation has been known to be not 100% reliable.
    4. (My preferred method) Easy enough but needs 3rd party software. Toast lets you burn your iMovie to DVD without menu - just drag the iMovie project to the Toast Window and click burn.
Disadvantage. you'll need to spend some extra $$ for the software. In Toast, you just drop the iMovie project on the Window and click Burn.
    5. The "hard way". Post-production with myDVDedit (free-ware)
    Tools necessary. myDVDedit ( www.mydvdedit.com )
    • create a disc image of your iDVD project, then double-click to mount it.
    • Extract the VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS folders to a location of your choice. select the VIDEO_TS folder and hit Cmd + I to open the Inspector window
    • Set permissions to "read & write" and include all enclosed items; Ignore the warning.
    • Open the VIDEO_TS folder with myDVDedit. You'll find all items enclosed in your DVD in the left hand panel.
    • Select the menu (usually named VTS Menu) and delete it
    • Choose from the menu File > Test with DVD Player to see if your DVD behaves as planned. If it works save and close myDVDedit.
    • Before burning the folders to Video DVD, set permissions back to "read only", then create a disc image burnable with Disc Utility from a VIDEO_TS folder using Laine D. Lee's DVD Imager.
