How do i create a usb boot drive for OS X Lion 10.7.5

How do I create a bootable USB drive on a working iMac with OS X Lion 10.7.5?  I'm fairly new to the MAC world...

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
If you want to create a bootable USB drive with the Mountain Lion installer, follow these steps:
1. Open App Store > Purchases, and download OS X Lion.
2. After downloading Lion, close the Lion installer and use Lion Diskmaker to create a bootable Mountain Lion flash drive > http://blog.gete.net/lion-diskmaker-us/
When you want to start from this OS X Mountain Lion USB drive, press Option key while your Mac is starting and select the USB drive

    You should just be able to erase it using Disk Utiilty. I did with my 8Gb.
    If not I have a USB deep format tool, but it only works with Windows: http://tinyurl.com/mwor6s9
    You can download that and unzip it, then run it on a PC to fully erase and format the flash drive. Format it in FAT, and then the Mac will read and mount it so you cna once again format it with HFS extended for Mac use.

  • Can I create an external boot drive for an updated Mac OS Maverick system?

    I'm currently running Mac OS Snow Leopard (10.6.8) on my 24" iMac and would like to clone my current drive to an external drive & then update that external drive to Mac OS Maverick. First, can this be done to create an external Boot drive for my iMac System? Secondly, can I then select the internal system (OS 10.6.8) or the external drive Maverick OS system at boot time?

    Probably will depend on just what your machine is - i.e. how current and fast is the internal hardware.
    Generally though, the performance booting off a firewire 800 should be fine for most things with little if any system lag.  My late-2008 MBP ( 2.53Ghz core-2 duo, 8GB RAM) runs quite well when booted from a firewire 800 drive (7200rpm - even my 5400rpm portable clone is perfectly useable).
    Just remember if using the external for a long or serious work session, if the power goes out, that external is not going to be powered off battery (I keep my full size external drives plugged into a UPS because of that).

  • Creating A New Boot Drive For Mac Pro Desktop

    I have a Mac Pro 1,1 using Lion:
    I would like to create a new and bigger boot drive but having not done this before I would appreciate any direction that would make this as painless as possible.   I will continue to use Lion but am a little lost when it comes to doing this with the download process of Lion as well as transferring what has been created on the current HD in the MacPro.  I have a new WD Black 2 TB SATA that I would like to use as the new boot drive.  Again, thank you for the help.

    Don't. Use. 2TB for system. Seriously.
    Use that for data.
    Get yourself a $89 Samsung 840 120GB instead along with Icy Dock $15. You will. Love it.
    You don't need a large drive for the system. All you need to do is MOVE all the data and media files and every thing else, just leave the small 4GB /Users/myuseraccount/Library on the boot drive with the OS and apps. Everything else gets off loaded.
    Leave your drive you ahve now as is for backup. Move data and clone the system.

  • Creating a USB boot image for LabviewRT

    I have installed Labview 8.2 and the "update 8.2.1" for Labview RT Standard version from the web.
    I am trying to create a bootable image for a target Laptop PC, using a USB jump drive.
    When I run NI-MAX and select TOOLS->RT Disk Utilities->Create Desktop PC Utility USB Drive, a popup dialog appears that says:
       "This utility will reformat a USB drive with a Labview Real-Time boot USB utility for use with a USB boot-capable Desktop PC. Make sure the USB drive is connected to your computer before you continue.
        Do you want to use this utility?"
    Clicking on Yes, shows a dialog selection window, with a single entry ="Version 8.2", and an OK and Cancel button.
    Selecting the OK button, shows an error popup titled: Measurement & Automation Explorer" with text="Unable to detect USB drives"
    The jump drive is 32MB and is visible in WINDOWS Explorer.
    WHY will NI-MAX not see or use this jump-drive ?
    ( I have tried two different jump drives from two different manufacturers)

    Hello,
    Does your jump drive conform to the USB Mass Storage Device Class?  What drive letter are you using?  Did you create it by running the command line utility "subst"?
    Have you tried doing this on a different computer?  Are the USB ports 1.1 or 2.0?

  • How to install SSD as a boot drive for Snow leopard? I am confused...

    Hello; This is first time I will use SSD on my macpro. I ordered the SSD from amazon and it will come next week I hope. I need some help and advice. My boot drive is HDD (Macintosh HD) now. So, I Want to move from the HDD to SSD. What's the easiest and guarentee way to do it? I am not a good technician. I've read about carbon copy cleaner or disk utility to back-up everything to another drive, boot from there then select the SSD. Is this needed? Cant I just directly copy my application and operation System to SSD? How about using the installation disc and directly install to the SSD? I am confused. What do you suggest? Please help
    My system:
    Macpro early 2008 (3.1)
    OS 10.6.8
    SSD is samsung 840 series 256 GB... (Since My macpro dont use SATA 3, I didnt see any reason to invest more money and buy 840 pro series or 830 series)

    Hi, There are any number of different ways to move the data from one drive to another. My preference (the last one) would be to do a clean fresh install using system disks because of the way SSD drive's lay down data.
    I'm not going to go into detail laying out HOW you do this. I assume you can do a Google (or other) engine search for details.
    1) SystemMigration - this is a built in MAC OS X utility that allows you to move system + data from one drive to another
    2)  Do a Time Machine backup of everything and then use TM to restore everything the way it is or REINSTALL a clean install of the data+new system on the replacement drive.
    3) Carbon copy Cloner is a great cloning application and can "block clone" from a smaller drive to a replacement drive of the same or larger size
    The above 3 methods assume you will transfer ALL the date, good bad & ugly, from the magnetic media to the SSD. This is the most efficient method,  but from personal experience you may end up not getting
    the faster boot up time and disk responsiveness you would expect from an SSD. I can't say why; it may have to do with the way data is initially "laid down" on the SSD OR all the extra "jetsam and flotsam" that accompanies a used system drive - "(how's THAT for non techno-geek detail).
    I have noticed that Drive clones are only as good as the source from which they are taken and that when I cloned a magnetic Lion 10.6 Drive to an SSD, there was no significant advantage in boot times with a 10.6 Lion boot taking anywhere from 45 to 60 to 75 seconds (pretty much he same for magnetic drives).
    I then did an original clean system install on the SSD as if I were doing it for the first time....updated it completely and THEN and only then did I reinstall all the apps individually followed by cloining the data files.
    By doing this, I was able to cut the boot time on that SSD (and all subsequent ssd clones of the original SDD) to 25 to 30 seconds.
    NOT BAD. Just simply cloning what you already have is a simple option, but if you're looking for optimal SSD performance, I'd opt for a fresh clean instll of everything.

  • Problems with creating a USB boot device for Windows 8.1

    My iMac (late 2012) running OSX Mavericks is encountering problems creating a Windows 8.1 install disk via a USB thumbdrive. The drive has 8gb of space available, which is enough to fit windows. But when I choose my ISO image and select the drive I recieve an error message. The error is 'Bootcamp only supports 64-bit Windows installation on this platform. Please use a ISO file for 64-bit Windows installation.
    I'm certain this ISO definately contains 64-bit, so I'm slightly confused.
    I've followed instructions found in other discussions talking about adding an extra line of information to 'info.plist' found inside the Package Contents for bootcamp, but that has also not worked. If I try that, Bootcamp crashes upon being clicked every time.
    Any help is appreciated

    First up: a question. How did you fix the crashing Bootcamp Utility? It would help out this guy: https://discussions.apple.com/message/23523783?ac_cid=tw123456#23523783
    Next up: A possible solution (also posted here:https://discussions.apple.com/message/23523783?ac_cid=tw123456#23523783)
    =====================
    It's possible you have a Windows ISO for both 32- and 64-bit. In this case it's probably detecting the presence of the 32-bit installer and forgets to look for another 64-bit version.
    A way to work around this is to not use the Bootcamp Assistant utility by following the listed steps:
    The way installing Windows should work either way using the Legacy BIOS mode:
    - Get a Windows ISO or DVD and copy the contents over to a freshly fat32 formatted USB stick of at least 4GB.
    - Download the Apple Bootcamp Support Software (4.x or 5.x, 5.x only supports 64-bit, get that if you are going 64-bit);
    - Copy the content of the Support Software folder over the the same USB stick from the first step. It should fit just right (it did on my 4GB stick with 2MB te spare!);
    - Use disk utility to partition your disk. Make sure the partition for Windows is Fat32 and at least 30GB;
    - Reboot your machine while holding Option/Alt at the chime;
    - You should be able to select either your OSX HDD or your USB stick labeled "Windows" -> Select Windows and press enter or click the arrow;
    - The Windows installer should now load, format the previously made Windows partition to NTFS;
    - Continue on your way.
    Can you try what I typed above? If it doesn't work, can you let me know at what step things go differently than described?
    Edit: This is based on the logical conclusion that any Mac that was shipped without ODD should be able to boot from USB.
    Edit2:
    One other note is that Mac's have trouble booting from USB when multiple USB storage devices are attached. So make sure you connect only one storage device.
    =====================
    Best of luck to you!

    Creating a Mavericks USB boot drive after the horse has bolted.  Can I create a bootable USB drive from my iMac after installing Mavericks without saving the Install OS X Mavericks.app file?  Do I need to re- download the whole 5.29 Gb from the App Store again?  My problem is my 4Gb/month allowance on a 12 month contract.  I cannot purchase a data block from my ISP and although my speed is theoretically slowed to 64k after reaching my 4Gb, it actually ceases to download in reality.

    HI tasclix, it depends what you mean by an OS X boot drive.
    If you want a recovery disk from which you can reinstall (by re-downloading) or recover from a time machine backup, then nbar is correct.
    If, however, you want to boot and run the OS X installer from the USB drive (so that you don't need to download again), then you will need a copy of "Install OS X  Mavericks.app"; see this article:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5856
    Before downloading again, search your system to see if the installer is still there - it's usually in the /Applications folder unless it has been deleted, but check your whole system for it anyway, you never know, you might still have it somewhere.

  • Selling Mac OS X USB Boot Drives

    Hi everyone,
    I know that a lot of people want/need USB Boot drives as a backup for their OS X (Yes, I know about Recovery HD, but some people want it for ease of installing without internet etc…) and I wanted to sell them. My question; is this legal? I know that the EULA of 10.8 says it can be installed on computers you own or have control of, so do I need to buy a copy for each drive I sell, and if so how?
    Of course, this might be illegal or illogical, in which I'd appreciate any help or pointers anyone can give me.
    I was thinking of creating drives for 10.6, 10,7, 10.8 and 10.9 (Just for convenience, as obviously it is free).
    Thanks in advance,
    Harrison

    My question; is this legal?
    No. Refer to the section regarding "transfer" in each of the respective EULAs:
    https://www.apple.com/legal/sla/
    They're all essentially identical, and begin with the words "You may not rent, lease, lend, sell, redistribute or sublicense the Apple Software."
    I was thinking of creating drives for 10.6, 10,7, 10.8 and 10.9 (Just for convenience, as obviously it is free).
    In the case of Snow Leopard, you can certainly sell the DVD you purchased at any price you deem appropriate, and provided you retain no copies of it, but nothing purchased from the App Store may be transferred. Its purchase price has no bearing on the question, even if it was $0.
    In any case you absolutely may not make a copy of any Mac operating system, sell it, and remain in compliance with Apple's license Agreement. It has been this way since 1984.

  • Can I switch out a hard drive for an SSD without having to clone the existing hard drive, and then install Yosemite from an USB Boot Drive onto the new SSD?

    Can I simply replace a hard drive with a new SSD and just install Yosemite from a USB boot drive onto the SSD? I recently bought a used MBP and it has absolutely no files on it except for the OS, and so I'm assuming I don't need to clone the current hard drive as I can just reinstall the OS onto the new SSD.

    Just a quick follow up question, is formatting the SSD with HFS+ done in Disk Utility?...
    It's possible that the SSD will be set up for use on a PC, which means it will have a Master Boot Record partition table rather than a GUID Partition Table, which is what Yosemite needs. In Disk Utility, select the SSD and click the Partition button. Create a new Partition Layout and click the Options... button at the bottom. You'll likely see MBR is selected. Choose GUID instead and Mac OS Extended (Journaled) for the Format.

  • Is there a way to access purchased apps from the app store on windows computer? For USB boot drive

    Having a problem with my Macbook (13", Late 2009 I believe) after attemption to update iOS to OS Mavericks. Have run into the grey screen of death, and have almost exhausted all options, including reseting pram, accessing fsck, and even using disk utility to reinstall the iOS. I believe that during the initial update (which is the root of the problem), there was some corruption within the directories which I believe can be contributing to my problem.
    I was hoping to find a way to access my purchased apps from the app store on a windows computer so that I can make a USB boot drive in order to rule out the hardware problem that I am currently speculating.
    Please advise, thanks in advance!

    Yes if you have the iPod and iTunes set up to sync via wifi. However, you have to do it from your one syncing computer and the iPod and computer have to be on the same network.

  • How do I create an External Hard Drive iPhoto Library

    How do I create an external Hard Drive iPhoto Library? Will it remember faces and places, and the camera settings?  I have over 20k photos. Most pictures are already stored in files on my external hd, but everytime I need to edit, I need to import the pics back into iPhoto. Is there an option for "editing software" outside of iPhoto? I do not want to store pictures on my computer, but I do like the "faces" feature! Please help!

    Sure it can be UnDone in the same way it was done. By Copying the iPhoto library back to the original location or any other location on your internal drive and then Repointing iPhoto to use that Library as you did when you moved it to the external.
    Have no idea about the thumbnails being blurry as I only use iPhoto for testing and helping others. I find iPhoto lacking in many ways and I already own Adobe Lightroom so I use that on my Mac.
    I wouldn't think the thumbnails wouldn't be any different. They are the same files and even if the external is slower the Thumbnails should display the same way not differently.
    I also do not allow any of the "i" programs, Photo & Tunes, to Copy my image or music files into their folder structure. I have them set to Leave the Files where they are, as I copy them to my hard drive where I want them Not where Photo and Tunes want to put them, and then just create a Library Database of them. So if I wanted to I could have just the actual image files on an External drive and then have iPhoto just create a Library database reference to them.
    One Note though.
    If you move the Library, including the actual image files, to an external and then start iPhoto without that external connected iPhoto will then Create another Library in the normal Default location that is blank and then you will need to point it to your original that is on the external once you reconnect that external.
    That is one reason I don't care for iPhoto. Apple has made it fairly easy for novice users, placing everything in their User folder but IMHO that is not always the best way to do things.
    Also at any point in time, even with the external connected, iPhoto will lose that association to the external Library and create another in the original Default location. Which will look like all your images are missing.

    Thank you for responding. I understand. After reading quite a bit about this procedure, can it be undone? So many out there have stated that everything slows way down and the thumbnails are blurry. What is your opinion?
    Do I first create a New File on the EHD and name it "iPhoto Library"? Then paste?
    Most pictures are in folders on my EHD, how do I move them to the new library?
    Thanks!
