How do I create a white stroke?

I am trying to make a line with the pencil tool in Illustrator CS4 which I can use as a "white out" line to paint over black lines I dont want to see.
I want a line which has a white stroke with a white fill - or no color at all, which will make it look white.
Whatever I try, the pencil line keeps appearing black, or white with a black centre bit. I select the color to be white or no color (diagonal red line) but I cannot make a line which is just white. It is very frustrating.
Can anyone show me how to do this in Illustrator 4 (I am using a wacom with a Mac).

I asked you to select the path then take the screenshot and show us the apprearance panel but not just part of the appearance panel all of it so we can see what is going on.
But off hand it looks like you have two strokes applied to those paths.
But take the shot over and let us see everything in the appearance panel and select one of the paths and only one, where you are applying the white.
BTW this is not a guessing game we are here to try to help so help us help you.

You highlight the path in the layers panel but did not select it on the canvas select it with the selection tool on the canvas.

How can I create a white hotspot in an image, i.e. A bright spot with feathered edges for a figure to walk out of, a bit like a sun?

Create new layer, make an eliptical selection, and fill with the colour of choice. A muted yellow perhaps.
Use a high value Gausian blur to soften and feather the layer. High values of blur will make the flare very thin, so if too thin, duplicate the layer.
Use Free Transfor to size and shape the flare.
or
Select the figure, and copy to a new layer.
Double click the new layer to open Layer Styles, and use Outer Glow, and some inner glow. This is by far the better option as you can control the inner and outer glow independantly.

Open a new document with a square aspect ratio. Make it at least as big as the other image.
make a new layer, and make foreground colour yellow, and BG colour white
Go Filter > Render Fibers. Use full strength, and a lowish variance. You are looking for strong, closely spaced vertical streaks.
Now go Filter > Distort > Polar coordinates. Make sure Rectangular to Polar is checked and OK it.
Duplicate the layer to your other image document, and place behind the layer with your figure on it.
You can play with the flare layer with curves, or maybe add a wee bit of blur and then harden with curves or levels
If you want the flare layer to overlap the figure a bit, Ctrl (Cmd) click the figure layer to load it as a selection, and add a layer mask to the flare layer. Move the flare layer above the figure layer. Now feather the layer mask, using the Mask Properties panel, or use Mask Edge options in the Mask properties panel to expand, or contract the mask.

How do I put a white stroke on EVERYTHING in my design?

I am fairly new to Illustrator, although since I'm pretty good at Photoshop (I have used it exclusively for graphic design for 10 years) I have been picking up Illustrator fairly quickly. I created a design but would like to put a white stroke on everything so that it will look good on both dark and light colored shirts, but I can't figure out how to do this. It's SO simple in Photoshop, but I need the vector capabilities of Illustrator more and more these days so I really need to learn how in Illustrator.
All of my objects are in separate layers so I have tried to combine them and merge them to create a new stroke around them but all this does is group them and still create new strokes on each individual object. How do I literally MERGE them as they are (front object stays in front, back object stays in back, and they retain their coloring) so that I can put a white stroke around them?

Create a new layer and drag all the current layers into it.
Click the circle to the right of the layer to "target" it.
In the Appearance panel create a new Stroke by using the flyout menu.
Assign "white" to the stroke.
This will add a white stroke to any object within the targeted layer. If you want the stroke to be seen only on the outside of the objectes drag the "Stroke" attribute below the "Content" in the Appearance panel.
By adding an "appearance" instead of actually "merging" your artwork, you can freely edit your artwork and the white stroke will be assigned to any changes. Read more about the "Appearance Panel". It will be WELL worth your while.

I have CS6 and am wondering how to create a white ("comic style"?) border around figures in an image, as in the examples below. I don't wish to include the black shadow of the border, just the white part.

If you make the image a layer (opposed to Background)...
You could Select the blue with the Magic Wand as Semaphoric says, then fill with white. Then choose Select - Modify Selection - Contract, and mask or delete the remaining pixels. The Contract operation will give you a nice border the size you choose.
For extra credit, you could use Refine Edge to make the selection more accurate.

How do I create a white line border for my video

So I've got standard HD source video with 16:9 aspect ratio (1920 x 1080 pixels) and I've made it "wide screen" by putting black slugs as bands at the top and bottom of the screen. I would now like to place a white line border at the top and bottom of the visible video. How do I do this in FCP? Is there a "draw" like function within FCP similar to those in Microsoft Word or Powerpoint, so that I can draw a line and then define it's colour and width?

if you need to do this often a plugin may also help you to quickly and easily create, reposition and change the width and color of one or more lines. One of these plugins is a free one of mine (actually I have two line genertors available for you).

I'm creating a collage with lots of photos, and need an efficient way to add a thick, square-cornered stroke to all of them in Photoshop CC.
I've googled till my face is blue and can't find the answer...anybody? Thanks!

To my knowledge that's not possible outside the vector based apps like Illustrator and InDesign.
I'd just make an action using Canvas Size, and if you do it a lot assign an F-key to it.
Edit: oops, missed the collage part, so that's obviously not an option...

How do you create a white fade to clear?

I'm working in the first CS.
I have an 8.5 x 11 box filled with a multi-colored blend (using the gradient tool).
I want to draw a small thin white box over top of it that fades from 100% white to zero (clear).
I cannot figure this one out. I know this is a very easy "do" in Photoshop, but cannot get this to work in Illustrator.

You will need to use an Opacity mask (from the Transparency Palette) with a black to white gradient.

Hi all, I'm just wondering how I can create a black and white image similar to what I see in the preview window of the "Replace Color" tool. See attached screenshot for clarification -- I need the grass to be black while the soil is white or vice versa. Any tips?

One way is to use Select>Color Range
Make a new Color Fill Layer>White
(Layer>New Fill Layer>Solid Color)
Put a new color fill layer below>black
Just invert the layer mask on the top fill layer for the opposite effect.

It's fairly easy if you know Ai. (Image trace is okay, but I'd recommend making your own (the right way), then use any Adobe pro video app to composite on your video, no need to export, just use the .Ai file)
But an easier way might be to use the .png by itself if it carries an alpha channel.
After Effects, PremierePro, and possibly AME will let you do this.
QT7 will also allow you to do it.
You could create a logo in Draw, then send it to Illustrator or Photoshop (it carries an alpha channel - bonus!)

How do I create transparent text with gradient stroke?

I'm creating text that will be printed on a deep gray to black tshirt.
I created text, added an offset path to it with a gradient, and a deep gray color fill on top, achieving the gradient stroke. However, I'm not exactly sure what color the shirt itself will be, other than deep gray to black. And I didn't want the deep gray/black fill in my text to appear and look awkward on the shirt. Unless that is something I shouldn't be considered about.
To be safe, how would you create transparent text with a gradient stroke? I'm using Illustrator CS5.

Based on a guess that you wish to have the stroke fade into the basic tshirt colour, you may use transparency rather than colour.
But the transparent text in the headline raises a few questions.
No fill colour for the Type/text, or different fill and (basic) stroke colour, or?

In the export settings there is a panel called Compression. You can set downsampling and compression, or lack thereof, there.

I have downloaded the LegoThick font... but because its an outline font and not white, the outline is only black and if I change it to yellow the black obviously changed too...oh and I cant get the font filled in white.. A picture might be worth a thousand words, but to be useful this one requires an explanation of how you did it.
This is very easy using multiple strokes in Illustrator, not so much in ID, but it can be done with a custom stroke style of type Stripe using half the width for the stroke and half for the gap. Fill the text with [Paper], then apply the stroke in Black with Yellow gap, or Yellow with Black gap (depending on which side of the stroke is gap). Is that what you did?

i know its not a problem whit my carrier o data plan or sharing preferences on the ipone because when i use it un my laptop it works perfectly through
the usb and even works on the Imac through wifi and bluethood tethering but NOT through usb!!.
the problem is that trying to make it work i deleted the "profile" usb iphone on the network prefereces panel. Now i only have 3 options: ethernet / wifi / bluetooth
but not the usb iPhone i used to have.
And when i try to add a new one i dont get a USB option.
can some one help me please??
