I am syncing w/ Windows Contacts in Vista. Is it possible to create multiple groups of contacts? For example - a group for friends and family, another group for customers, etc...

You should have an option to create groups in the File menu. To add contacts to this group, simply drag and drop them to it (switch to Groups display, to view all your groups).
Otherwise, you may create "smart groups", based on some criteria you define (File menu too).

You cannot create a contact group in the built in Contacts app. If your contacts sync with iCloud you can log in to https://icloud.com and manage contact groups there. Or with a contact app on your computer that syncs with iCloud. Alternatively, there are several iPhone apps that are more powerful than the built in Contacts app. You can use one of them to manage groups and contacts within groups. I use Speed Names, but there are several others.

Anyone can create Private Groups or Member Only Groups. You must be given
administrative rights to create Public Groups on the Calendar Server. The
Calendar Server Admin (SYSOP) can give anyone rights to create Public Groups by
using the uniadmrights tool.

Go to /users/unison/bin/
and run the uniadmrights
tool. Some sample syntax:

To list all users with administrative rights:
% uniadmrights -ls -host yourhostname

To give John Smith, a user on node 10000, rights to administer Public Groups:
% uniadmrights -e "S=Smith/G=John" -add -pgrp -n 10000

In Calendar Server 4.0, you also have the option of using the Admin Server GUI
to assign Administrative
rights (instead of using the command-line method) by going to User Management,
Administration Rights.

With the proper administrative rights, log into the Calendar Client. Go to Options,
Manage Groups to create a new group. Choose PUBLIC from the dropdown window,
add your users and/or resources and click OK to create the Public Group which
can be seen by all users on the local Calendar Server.

You're setting up internal DNS services, you referenced your ISP DNS servers and you should not have, and now those servers have no translations for your hosts. This is a common misconfiguration.

And if there are any references to your ISP DNS servers here (within your client settings, within your server settings, your Airport settings, etc), then you're usually going to have DNS and connectivity problems. But I can hardly believe that the people at Apple would be so stupid not to include such a thing, as there are iPhone users who do not own a computer. How should they manage their contacts?

Only contacts added to the iCloud group will sync with iCloud. To make this your default, go to Settings>Mail,Contacts,Calendars...scroll down to the Contacts section and tap Default Account. Here, choose iCloud as your default. After doing so, new contacts will be added to iCloud and sync with your iCloud account.

How am I supposed to use my created iCloud contact group on my iPhone?

I followed the instructions & 'help notes' on creating a contact group by logging into my iCloud account. Now on my iPhone I can see the group when I go to Contacts & click on the upper left hand "Groups" button, but that screen only lists which list of contacts I've got synced with my iCloud. About all you can do is when addressing the email, tap the "+", navigate to your groups, uncheck all groups but the group you want to send the email to and tap Done, then tap each member one at a time to add them to the list of recipients.
Otherwise you can use an app that will allow you to select an entire group at onece (such as Speed Names).

Found out I was using Outlook 2000. Syncing won't work unless you use Outlook 2003 or higher. I got around this by going into Outlook contacts and did the following steps under the file tab I:
1-Export to file
2-Comma Separated Values (Windows)
3-Named file
4-Saved file to desktop
Then I copied the contacts file to mobile thumb and imported them to Windows Address on another computer. From there I synced with my IPhone.
I found out Windows Address mirrors anything under Outlook. Because my Outlook is old and in the wrong format using my Windows Address will do the same thing thus I needed to copy info to another computer in order to use Windows Address. I will upgrade Outlook and see how that works but for now I have a temporary fix to problem.

I attend music events several times a month, where there are often 1-30k people attending. I've made a lot of friends who also attend these events and like to meet up with them during the event, usually at different times as they often don't know each other.
For example, at one event I might want to meet up with 20 different people. Some I know or perhaps someone who's a friend of a friend might want to meet me. I'll get their phone number as well to text them during the event.
When I was on Windows mobile, I'll create a category named after the event, and I would add whoever I knew who was going the event to that category. After the event, I could just delete the category as it was no longer relevant.
With the iPhone, I don't know how to do anything even close to this. I've done some research, and it looks like you move contacts into a folder, sync, move them back, and then sync again. This sounds pretty tedious, and doesn't account for the fact a contact may belong to several categories at the same time.
Is there a solution in the pipeline or perhaps a 3rd party app that can let me assign contacts to multiple groups?

In the contacts app there really isn't a way to do this. What I do however, is create a note in the Notes App with the email addresses of the people I want to email to like this: [email protected]; [email protected]; [email protected]
Then when I want to email that group, I just use the copy feature of iPad, pasted it into the to line in an email and voila, I can email to a group.
