How do I create or export a logo in Illustrator CS5 with an alpha channel to use in Final Cut Pro 6?

To anyone who can help:
I have created a logo using Illustrator CS5 and need to import it into a video sequence in Final Cut Pro 6.  The logo has a transparent background.  It seems FCP 6 will import both native .ai files as well as .tiff files, but when I open them in FCP 6, the alpha channel (transparent background) is no longer there; there is just the logo over a white background.  Is there a setting or step I am missing?
Shaun MacLellan

I have to insert AI images into Final Cut Pro and Motion quite frequently.
The most effective way I've found to get an AI image into Final Cut is to:
1. Select/copy all the objects in the AI doc.
2. Create a new file with a transparent background in Photoshop and paste.
3. Merge the layers and make sure the mode is RGB.
4. Save out as a .PNG or .PSD.
5. Drag the result into Final Cut (or Motion).
6. Resize and position the result to taste.
Attempting to export directly from AI to .PSD or .PNG is a wasted effort  and the results may not even be recognized by Final Cut.
Yes, it requires Photoshop and it is a few extra steps...but it works like a charm.
Additionally, when creating a new file in Photoshop, you may want to initially set its size to match the aspect ratio of your video. For example, if you're making an HD video, you might set the size to 1280x720 and position the AI elements where they are supposed to be in frame. You can set the AI elements in accurately by cutting and pasting a frame from your video into Photoshop and positioning the AI elements in place on another layer above the video layer. Delete the video layer before saving out as a .PNG or .PSD and it will appear in Final Cut exactly where it should be.

  • How can I export a file that may use in Final Cut Pro?

    Hello friends,
May I know how to export a file that I can use it Final Cut Pro???

If you are talking about rendering then just use any production codec that FCP supports. You have access to them all. Use the Render Cue or create a custom preset in the Adobe Media Encoder.
If you want to do something like dynamic link with FCP, that does not exist. You can save a PPro project as a FCP XML but any PPro effects or PPro settings unique to PPro will not come across. If you turn an After Effects project into a FCP project by going through PPro as was suggested then you will NOT get any of the effects you applied to your composition or any of the animation or anything but the footage In and Out points, opacity, rotation and position because that is all that will be moved into PPro because After Effects plug-ins are not compatible with PPro. If there is a dynamic link to an AE project in your PPro project that will not move to FCP at all. You'll get nothing.
So the long and short of it is if you want the work that you have done in AE to show up in FCP you must render the project. I use ProRez 444 10 bit for any work I do on FCP. You can make a custom Output Module preset to help speed up the workflow.
If you are new to AE please read this on rendering: After Effects Help | Basics of rendering and exporting
If you are really new please go through these three tutorials: Basic Workflow

  • Using the final cut pro trial, i can't export?

i downloaded the final cut pro trial a while ago, not activating until recently. i guess before i activated it, after downloading, i had to get switch my glitchy macbook for a new identical one. i don't know if this is the problem, but it could be. i am making a movie in the trial version, and under commands, export is not clickable. so, i used the share option, and tried to share it as a master file... then to an apple product... then tried to share to youtube. all result with the same thing. it'll act as if it's working, but after maybe 30 seconds a little message saying "Share Failed." when i click on details, all it says is "The operation could not be completed because an error occurred when creating frame 1543 (error -1)." I don't know what that means. Does it mean one of my clips is the glitch? I have no idea what the problem is here. Are you even allowed to export using the trial version anyway? I haven't been able to get a straight answer there either. Thanks!

As Bobbyyco said, you should definitely be able to share from the trial version.
In Preferences>General>Time Display, you can change the to Frames, which makes it easier to locte the slip that includes the frame in the error message.
You could then use a replace edit to substitute something ales in its place. Then use the range tool to select a short section that includes the replaced clip and export as a master file.
If it works, your project should export. (Transcode a new version of the clip by right clicking and use that as the permanent substitute clip.
If it doesn't work, turn off background rendering in Preferences. Select your project and from the File menu, choose Delete Project Render FIles. When prompted choose All Files. Do another test export as a master file without rendering.

  • How do you get more free effects to use in Final Cut pro x?

I am looking for a safe free place to download more effects that I can use on my videos in Final cut pro x that include effects that aren't just limited to the colors of the video. I also hope that the place will have clear instructions on how to download them onto final cut pro x. If you know of a place like this let me know, thank you!

fcp.co is my go to place for transitions and effects. Most are between $20 and $50 and because they have many effect in each are well worth the money spent. My favorites are Pixel Studios and Lucas, both purchased through FX Factory. Look at the examples and demo videos before you buy.
    Good luck!

  • !!!!HELP!!!! Exporting project with clips still referencing from memory card - Final Cut Pro X

I was working on a project recently (music video) where I had about 75 clips to cut up and edit, but my HD was too full to import all of the clips.
The clips still added to an event and I was still able to drag them into the project and cut them up like any regularly imported clip, but now that the clips are all lined up and edited where I need them to be, Final Cut won't let me export the project to youtube or a master file because the clips are still "referencing" off of my memory card.
Is there any way to bypass this or maybe import them and be able to not lose my edits or cuts?
    Thanks.
    - John

    FOUND THE SOLUTION!!!!!!!!
In the event window, all of the clips that have the little camera icon on them, I highlighted and went to File >> Import >> Reimport from Camera/Archive. I had to do each clip individually which was annoying, but it worked.
And most importantly, none of the clips were taken out of their place.
    Thanks for your input guys.

  • Can one export using the Final Cut Pro X demo?

I downloaded the demo app to use for school until I can afford the full version. I need to export the video I made for school, but it seems that I cannot do so. I assume the only reason for this is because it is the demo version of the app and they did not include the export feature. However, I could be incorrect, do to my unfimiliarity with the software. I have tried to change everything and nothing has worked. If anyone could shed any light on this situation, I would highly appreciate it.
All footage is from a Canon Rebel t3i. No matter how I select or deselect or view the file, nothing changes.

I feel a bit stupid right now, but I am not sure I am doing the right thing here. It just isn't working.

  • How to upgrade My Mac Book Pro 15" Mid 2010 from Ram 8go to 16go to use for Final cut pro ?

    Hi,
I have a MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2010) 2,66 GHz Intel Core i7 with graphic card NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M 512 Mo and would like to know if its possible to upgrade my Ram from 8 to 16 Go to work more faster with final cut ... Thanks for your feed back

    scrutinizer82 wrote:
So, you do recognize that one can upgrade MBP RAM past 8 GB? It means Niel was incorrect.
Only for certain models will that apply.  Niel gave a correct answer.  Note that tofaustral has a 2010 MBP, I have both a 2010 and 2011 MBPs.  The former is limited to 8 GB RAM and the latter can accept 16 GB RAM.  In both cases, Apple specifications state that 8 GB is the maximum.
if technically it's possible to have 16 GB of RAM will it affect performance positively (speed up), that is, without excessive amount of unused RAM? Did you feel improvement after installing 16 GB?
RAM does not speed up a computer.  It will allow for more applications to be run simultaneously and will allow the computer to run more efficiently when a resource intensive application requires more RAM than might otherwise be available.  If an application requires to run efficiently with 2 GB RAM, there will be no difference in performance if the computer has 4 GB RAM installed or 16 GB installed.  A resource intensive application will run more efficiently if it requires more than 8 GB RAM on a computer with 16 GB RAM installed as opposed to one with just 8 GB RAM.   RAM not used has no affect in performance.
Furthermore, what about Apple's warranty in this case? Will it be automatically terminated?
If the user manual has instructions for installing RAM, then doing so will not void the warranty unless you damage the computer in the process.
    Ciao.

  • Streamclip - exporting for use in Final Cut Pro

Hi, I've just downloaded Streamclip and have several DVDs (made with a dv video camera, fcp and DVD studio pro) about ten minutes long each, that I want to re-edit in Final Cut Pro into one whole movie.
What is the best/correct way to do this? I tried demuxing to M2V and AIFF but the video was faulty (it was stilted in horizontal lines), should I be demuxing to Unscaled M2V and AIFF, or something else completely?

Thanks, but when I look at the sequence settings (by right clicking the sequence and going to settings - I assume that's right, but there's always a way to do it wrong!) I can't find anything that matches the demux options. What should I be looking to match up?

  • How can I import HDV-Files from a CF-Card to Final cut Pro 5.1.4

How can I import HDV-Files from a CF-Card (recorded with the Sony HVR Z 7E) to Final cut Pro Version 5.1.4 – is this possible at all?
I managed to import the files to Premiere, but it was just a test. I am working at a very huge documentary project with Final cut Pro Version 5.1.4 thats why I would prefere not to change the program or the version.
Simply exporting from Premiere back to final cut is also very complicated.
    Thanks for any ideas.

First, copy the card to a hard drive connected to your fcp workstation.  I always back up all card based media at least 2 or three times.  All hard drive will eventually fail.  It's a question of when, not if.
I'm not familiar with this particular camera, but examine the contents of the copied files and see if you can find any .mov files.  You can try importing these directly into fcp.
If you don't, you can try something like clipwrap
    http://www.divergentmedia.com/clipwrap
    or
    Magic Bullet Grinder
    http://www.redgiantsoftware.com/
But, I'd really advise upgrading to at least fcp6 or ideally fcp7 if you can find a copy.  HDV is a problematic format.  Although you can certainly work with it and it's a fcp approved format, converting your media to prores would make your life much easier.

  • How do I get copyright or license to show Final Cut Pro in use by a character in a film?

    Hi,
I am working in a Film Production team in Brazil.  We are producing a film where the main character is a film editor and he uses Apple Final Cut Pro at his work.
The film is for all ages - no restriction.
I have already written to "Copyright Permissions"  but had no answer since June!
Do I need a copyright license for that?
And if I do, how do I get it from Apple?
    Thank you in advance.

I am not a lawyer, but I don't see how you are infringing on Apple.   Remember, most e-mails are not read or replied to.  Your best course of action would be to send a priority letter to Apple's street address.   They still may not reply, but it will be read.
A test that usually (but not always) works.  Is your activity costing the other party money.  Is your activity resulting in the other party losing sales.
If your movie is showing some guy at a desk using a companies software; it's beyond my comprehension why they would have a problem.  In fact, many companies pay for “product placement”.  However, I understand that Apple does not engage in this practice.
But I can assure you, every time you see someone with a Coke (and other products) in a movie the producers were probably paid.

  • Best quicktime export settings - compression - from final cut pro

i have done this for a while. still don't know.
to translate an ntsc 24p project onto a dvd, which export settings (compressor)do you use in final cut pro? i use current settings, and once i am done with idvd ("best quality") it just doesn't look high quality. is this an idvd question?
    powermac g5 2.7 ghz dual   Mac OS X (10.4)   2.5 gb ram

    I didn't know iDVD could handle 24fps project. Or is it a 29.97 (23.98 with a pulldown).
Best quality in iDVD just means that it works on it longer to compress it more to fit more on disk. Have you tried Best Speed version?

  • How to use garageband loops in final cut pro x

    I have O/S 10.6.8
I have looked in the following for garageband loops, but see nothing.
    1. Mac HD > Library > Audio > Apple Loops > Apple > Apple Loops for Garage Band,
    2. Mac HD > Library > Application Support > GarageBand > Apple Loops > Apple Loops for GarageBand,
    and
    3. Username > Library > Audio > Apple Loops > User Loops. (cannot see any files here)
I am wanting to access these Apple loops to use in Final Cut Pro X.
Do I need to 'unhide' these files

I appreciate your help. As you can guess, I am new to the Apple discussion groups.
I tried unhiding files with Terminal, but that did not appear to help in this situation
I did find an answer that suits me for the mean time.
    First  -  (to see loops)
to see the Apple loops on my computer with Finder-
    -1 open Finder
-2 Click on 'Go' icon at top of page
-3 This brings drop down box
-4 Click 'Go to Folder' and enter the following
           /Library/Audio/Apple Loops/Apple/Apple Loops for Garageband
Second  - to get them into Final Cuty Pro X
Create new folder in     /Library/Audio/Apple Loops/Apple
called                         Apple Loops for Soundtrack Pro
Now copy all files from    'Apple Loops for Garageband'
to       'Apple Loops for Soundtrack Pro'
By creating the folder 'Apple Loops for Soundtrack Pro', it livens its existing link within Final Cut Pro X,
so when you are in Final cut and go to the 'Music and Sound' icon you can now see the folder has changed from gray to blue, and you can see any files you copied into it.
Cheers to all the help from others in trying to understand Finder.

  • Mac App store and Final Cut Pro X can a single Apple account purchase 3 separate copies of Final Cut X? Also how do we allow our editors to update FCPX, but not have access to the credit card?

I work for a medium sized compand 400+ people. We have a 3 person video crew. How does our company start an Apple account that will allow us to purchase three separate copies of Final Cut Pro X, but not allow us access Credit Card info, but still allows us to update purchased software? Surely Apple cators to small businesses needing multiple lisences. I appreciate any feedback, thanks!

I would assume that since your company has a video department, it probably also has an IT department.   Have them set up the needed account(s) and download from the App Store for you.
You should also contact Apple about a mulit-seat licensing arrangement, but those usually involve 25 seats or more.
Apple doesn't really cater to small businesses ... or any business group in particular.  They primarily cater to the consumer market.

  • How do i export multiple full resolution movie files at the same time in final cut pro 6?

I've been using Final Cut Pro since version 3 came out, know the program well, have even had jobs consisting of just operating the program.  I'm currently running version 6 because that's the latest one that works on my computer.  Back in verison 3, there used to be an option under Export to export a "Final Cut Pro" movie, which was really a Quicktime movie but appeared with a FCP icon and defaulted to opening in FCP, but the important thing about it is that it was a full resolution copy of the movie with no compression.  Now, that option seems to have been changed to "export Quicktime movie."  In my opinion that change is kind of stupid since it is so much less specific and is even less of an implication that one is exporting a full resolution file.  But in fact you are.
One also has the option of using Compressor to export a version of a movie, and therein there are so many different options that if you are not confused by it I think there's something wrong with you.  Moreover, it would appear that there is no equivalent of exporting a full resolution version of a file in Compressor.  Fair enough: a full-resolution file involves no compression so is not appropriate for "Compressor."  BUT, suppose you want to export multiple uncompressed, full-resolution movies at once.  When you use Compressor, you are able to create batch lists and export many things at the same time, for instance, lists that will take many hours to complete so you can go to bed and get the results the next day.  But as far as I can tell there is no way to do this at full resolution without compression.  Instead you have to sit at the computer waiting for each one to finish and after each one, manually go to the next and select "export Quicktime movie."  Even if there is a way to do this I would complain that such an obviously desireable thing is so unaccessable.  In fact, the only reason I've typed out my question at such length is because I'm stuck here waiting for each one of my movies to export.
Anyway, all my complaints aside, anyone know how to do this?

what you're missing to export multiple files is the batch export command available in the file menu or by control clicking on the items in the browser.  You can export multiple sequences/clips at full resolution with this.
This has been available in fcp for a long long time.
Wow, you are right.  Now that you mention it, I can't believe I never noticed that.  Thanks.
Only if you have the 'Self-Contained' box checked.  Otherwise you'll end up with a reference movie.
Correct.  That box is typically checked by default.  There are other default settings you could change that would not result in a full-quality version, but what I meant was hitting that option from the pull-down menu, then changing nothing and hitting ok.
