Share a GarageBand song as a ringtone or text tone
In the My Songs browser, tap the Select button, then tap the song you want to export (or touch and hold the song).
Tap the Action button , then tap Share Song As Ringtone.The Export Ringtone panel opens, showing the name for the ringtone. By default, the ringtone uses the same name as the song.The maximum length for exported ringtones is 30 seconds. If the exported ringtone exceeds the maximum length, a dialog appears. Tap Continue to have GarageBand shorten the ringtone automatically, or tap Cancel to return to the song so you can shorten it.
To rename the ringtone, tap the name and type a new name.
Tap Export.
In the Ringtone Export Successful panel, do one of the following:
To return to the My Songs browser, tap OK.
To choose a use for the ringtone, tap Use sound as, then do one of the following:
To use the ringtone as your standard ringtone, replacing the existing ringtone, tap Standard Ringtone.
To use the ringtone as your standard text tone, replacing the existing text tone, tap Standard Text Tone.
To see a list of your contacts, tap Assign to Contact, then tap the contact you want to use the ringtone with.
To return to the My Songs browser without assigning the ringtone, tap Done to return.
The next time you sync your device, the ringtone also appears in the GarageBand File Sharing area in iTunes. You can drag it to the Tones list to add it to your iTunes ringtone library.

exactly what the title says.

Set your import settings to AAC format, and maybe 128kbps or less.
Go to Get Info for the song you want as a ringtone, then set the Start and/or Stop times on the Option tab. The total length must be 30 seconds or less.
Right-click on the song an select "Create AAC version". This creates a new entry in your library.
Delete this newly added song from your library, but do NOT send the native file to your Recycle Bin.
Go back to the song you modified and reset the Start/Stop times.
Outside of iTunes, locate the native file for your modified song clip (the size will be much smaller than the original).
Re-name this file with a .m4r file extension instead of .m4a.
Drag and drop this .m4r file into your iTunes library.
Connect your iPhone to iTunes and change your sync settings to sync the new ringtone.
In your iPhone's Settings, select the ringtone as needed.

The name of the folder shown on the left under Library changed to Tones recently but I thought the tab at the top, while syncing, still said Ringtones. I guess I'm not sure. At any rate there are many youtube videos that will walk you through this if you want to check to be sure you are doing it correctly. I bought a ringtone from iTunes, but it downloaded itself to 'Music' folder instead of the 'Tones' folder. I can sync it to my iPhone (in the music folder) but cannot select it as a ringtone. Bizarre!
In addition, the inflexibility of iTunes means that I cannot simply drag and drop the ringtone to the tones folder in iTunes on my mac prior to sync. No idea why?

You probably purchased a song that was designed to be converted to a ringtone. To confirm this, right-click on the file in iTunes, select "Get Info", then verify on the Summary tab that ie says "Kind:Ringtone". If it doesn't, you must frst convert it to a ringtone, then import the converted file into the Tones folder of your iTunes library in order to sync it to your phone. Unable to create ringtone from purchased song.

Hi,
I have a client that wants to create some ring tones. I looked up the steps to do this and tried it on his PC and it did not work for all purchased songs. When I click on the bell icon, it brought me to the help screen on creating the ringtone. On other songs it brought me to the right menu for actually creating the ringtone.
If the song was purchased, why wouldn't it bring me to the correct menu?

I understand that, but my understanding is that if a song has the Bell icon next to it, that the song is in fact eligible to be made into a ringtone. Its these songs that aren't working.

Your MacBook Pro should have an application called GarageBand. Its icon looks like a guitar in your dock. Open GarageBand, go to "Help" in the menu bar, and type Create an iPhone Ringtone. It will walk you through what to do.

Trying to update my Ipad this morning to 'IOS 8.whatever', in the vain hope it might work a bit better. ITunes says I should transfer purchases. I found the option in Files/Devices but the option is greyed out so cant be selected. Does anyone have any ideas? If so, not good, you can transfer itunes purchases from the iphone: File>Devices>Transfer Purchases
You may be able to purchase a third party program to get the rest ( not supported by Apple).

Creating Multiple Ringtones from 1 song

Does anybody know whether or not we'll be able to make multiple ringtones from one song with out having to pay 99 cents for each one? i.e. you buy one song, +another one bites the dust+, and then you want to make 4 different ringtone from the same song, do we have to pay for each one, even though they're from the same song technically?

Many thanks for your answer. And yes this would be a solution. However I just simplified my case as the decision to create an second record and where to post is depending on more than 1 field in the source.
But I will keep it in mind, because I also can opt for a solution to store data differently in BPC fac-tabels which will help me to use script logic.
If it is not possible to create multiple records from a single records in the standard functionality in the Transformation and/or Conversion file, I have to create a custom DTSX or change my way of storing data.
Anyone else who is having an alternative idea like Greg came up with?

Okay, so here is what happend.
I deleted the song from my library since iTunes would not allow me to delete it from the purchased item list. Then i pluged my phone into my computer and got this message:
"iTunes has found purchased items on the iPhone “Paul’s iPhone” that are not present in your iTunes library. Do you want to transfer these items from this iPhone back to your iTunes library?"
I selected "Transfer" and it showed up with a dotted circle next to it where a a song number would normally be displayed. Then fter a couple of minutes the dotted circle magically dissapered and was replaced by a number just like all of the other songs in my library.
And best of all...it plays!!!
