In a very general answer to your question, since the most basic Photoshop instruction is kind of outside the scope of the forum, may I suggest using the Photoshop Help menu, choosing Photoshop Online Help, then entering Crop into the search box. There's a wealth of information there, though at the moment the versions of Photoshop seem a bit jumbled up.
A specific answer to your question is to do this:
1. Open your image into Photoshop.
2. Choose the Crop Tool from the Tools panel.
3. Either drag a rectangle around the part you want to keep, or use the little rectangular handles around the edges to move the edges in. Move the edges around until you like the way the bright part, which indicates what will remain of your image after the crop, looks.
4. Press the checkmark near the top of the Photoshop main window in the options area to complete the crop.

When you crop, the only control is the aspect ratio. You can crop an image with a custom ratio by selecting "custom" at the bottom of the aspect ratio popup menu in the Crop HUD that appears while in the Crop command.
The size only matters when you print the image. In the print dialog you can set the size in inches of the printed image. The dpi of the printed photo will depend on the pixel size of the image divided by the printed size in inches.
If you want to control the exact dpi of the printed image, you'll need a pixel editor such as Photoshop.

There is no tool to crop the image, you can make an mask on it but still the whole image resides within the stage. May be you can break apart and remove the unwanted sides, but not for practice.

But how do you control it in Fireworks?
I make a selection with the marquee tool, go to edit and choose crop selected bitmap.

Can you at least delete the crop without deleting the image?

Masks, yes, masks are great! If you just want to hide parts of your image from view, create a mask. Masks can be other bitmaps or vector objects. Create and position your mask object over your original bitmap. Select both then Modify > Mask > Group as Mask. You can easily undo the masking. White areas in a mask reveal the underlying object. Black or transparent areas in the mask cause your original image to be transparent for those pixels. Grey or semi-transparent produce a proportionally transparent result.
There's also the Paste Inside option, where you can paste your bitmap into a vector shape. The nice thing there is that you can move your bitmap around. (I'm pretty sure, anyway. I don't use this feature.)
Anyway. You have lots of options to remove or hide pixels. The approach you take depends on your needs and preferences.
If you have an image to share and a goal to achieve, we might be able to advise you better.

How do I crop an image to print

Please help. I have a horizontal image in lightroom that Im trying to upload to Shutterfly. When I upload it to Shutterfly, it crops some of the people out of it. I've tried everything to adjust the size in LR but it still keeps cropping the image. I'm trying to upload it to an 8X12 print.

You must do the crop to 8x12 in Lightroom, if you want an 8x12 print.
So, select the crop tool, and then from the dropdown menu, you can select 2x3 or 4x6 (they are equivalent to 8x12) ... I believe the dropdown menu actually shows 6x4 which is the horizontal layout.
Then when you export this photo and print at 8x12, it will retain the crop you created.

How do I crop an image with a Clipping Mask using a circle instead of a rectangle?

I watched Adobe TV Illustrator's tutorial about cropping images with a clipping mask. In the video, the presenter uses the rectangle tool with the clipping mask, and makes a reference that the circle or vector shape could be used, but I cannot figure out how to get the circle.

As Larry said, and as I said in the first post:
For a Clipping Mask, you just create a path, in this case a circle, and place it on top of the image, then select both and Object>Clipping Mask>Make.
You can see the shortcut when you use the dropdown; it is Ctrl+7 for Windows.
At least in the old days, you could also use Alt/Option+O+M+M (easy to remember, Object>Mask>Make).
It is easy to skip/overlook the exact steps.

Acrobat help says I can find the CROP function at tools > Page > Crop. This path does not exist on my latest Acrobat version XI. Where did it go? How do I find it?

Found it the answer.
There was no Tools button. I found the Tools button under Views -> Tool Sets -> Default Tools. Clicking this turned on the Tools button.

CS4- How do I anchor my image from floating when performing a crop?

I just upgraded to CS4 from CS3. (I've had the disc for a year but delayed due to workshops I was giving)
When I open an image (after ACR) and try a crop by clicking and dragging from top left to bottom right, then let go the image starts floating upward! I then have to select the Hand tool and pull the image back down. This is most agravating!
It never did this in CS3, as the image stayed anchored and centered in the screen. I've gone through all the preferences and presets and find nothing about crop tool options or image handling for a crop.
How do I anchor my image, so it doesn't move?
On a related problem, when I open an image from ACR, by default, it goes into a reduced window, which I have to make full screen by pressing the F key. In full screen mode, the image then goes in behind my tool windows.
In CS3, the image rested nicely within the working space between the tool window on the right and the screen on the left.
How do I get the images that I open in CS4 to replicate what I had in CS3?
Any assistance or ideas someone can render would be most appreciated.

Frequently I will quickly click and drag from top left to bottom right. The crop line then sits around the perimeter of the image. Then I will move the curser to the sides-top-bottom of the image and adjust it up or down for the desired crop, such as if I make a pano. In CS 3 this worked like a charm.
In CS 4, when I do the quick click and drag diagonally across, the window floats up as I continue the drag to the bottom of the page.
CS 3 didn't care if I worked this way, the image didn't move. Pour CS 4 is touchy and doesn't like it! It wants to be treated with RESPECT! Hah! So I've had to change my ways and just slowly stop in the bottom right corner if I don't want the freakin image to drift up. Wish I had a vid camera to show you what I mean.
Talked to my webmaster 'bout this problem. He could not reporduce this either. Mind you he says he opens his windows in TABS, which I don't do. I'm going to change my preferences and see what happens.

I'm looking at buying a 2nd cheapo 23inch screen to have all the windows and action panels on, so I leave my Cinema screen open for just the image.
Maybe this way it will reduce the aggravation level. Grrrrrrrrrrr!
