How do I crop out the pillarboxes in my video without losing quality?

Hello all.
I'm using Adobe Premiere CS6 right now to edit a promo video I did, but I have the problem of black boxes all around the video. I have tried to stretch it to fit but the quality suffered dramatically. I tried to crop it to 16:9 but the same thing happened with the quality. I'm okay with a little bit of letterboxing, but preferably I would like the video to fit the screen. I am trying to upload to Youtube.
I shot the video with a Canon EOS Rebel T3, which has an aspect ratio of 3:2. It records up to 720p. So Basically I'm just trying to get rid of the black borders while keeping the video at 720p quality.
I tried exporting in H.264, MPEG, MPEG-4, cropping, stretching, but something always either gets cut off or the quality suffers or both.
If you need more info I'll provide what I can, just ask. Thanks.

It seems that the Sequence doesn't match the footage, for instance editing SD footage in an HD sequence would exhibit the issue you describe. Is the footage 720p, which would be 1280x720? If so, and the Sequence is 1080p, that would also put black around the smaller video in the larger frame. They should match.
If you drag a clip from the Bin to the "New Item" button next to the Trash Can, that will create a Sequence matching your footage. In the current Sequence, Select All and Copy, then Paste everything into the New Sequence, that way you don't have to start over with editing.
Hope this gets you going
Thanks

  • I want to crop out a section of my m4v without losing quality

I have an m4v file, and I import it into imovie.
Then I say share, and I export it for apple tv as a m4v file.
Now this came in as a m4v, and it's going out as an m4v, all i did was isolate a scene.
I would think it should have exactly the same quality, but now suddenly the movement isn't as smooth, and some of the images look pixelated.
I've tried a bunch of different settings but I've had no luck. Tried it with exporting it to a mov too, nothing works. Been working on this from various angles for 7 days now
I tried with and without the optimize video setting checked.
How can I just edit out a section of the movie without losing quality?
I don't care if I have to buy a program.. I have already bought two and used trial versions on a couple others, including final cut pro nothing has worked for me

I had to go all the way back to 2005, but I found my answer here:

  • How do I edit a .mov file in iMovie '09 without losing quality?

    Hi!
Can anyone tell me how to edit .mov files in iMovie '09 without losing quality?
I have perfectly fine looking screen capture video from iShowU. It's 1024x768, 30 fps, Animation compression codec. It's a .mov file that looks great played in the QuickTime player. I can't even tell it's a movie -- it just looks like the screen I captured.
Now, I bring it into iMovie '09, trim the ends, and Export to QuickTime using no compression and the same fps and size. The output quality is noticeably lower than the input quality, which makes no sense to me because I'm telling the export not to compress (and my Preferences are set to "Import HD video as Full-Original Size".
I just want to trim the ends off a video -- maybe combine a couple files -- but without wrecking the quality of the originals. That really doesn't sound like it should be all that hard, but so far, it's been impossible.
    Any pointers are greatly appreciated!!

I've found the answer. On the File/Import/Movies... dialog, uncheck "Optimize Video" even if you have "Full - Original Size" selected. You don't want any optimizations done, even at original size. Then make sure you are exporting at precisely the same size as the original file, which means that under the Export to Quicktime/Options/Video Size dialog you do NOT want to check "Preserve aspect ratio using:" Just use "Custom" size and set your size to exactly what "Get Info" tells you when you view the file in the Finder.
Make sure that Video/Settings is set to Compression Type: None, and that you have the Frame Rate exactly what your original was.
    Hope this helps someone.

  • How do I edit out the middle of a video clip?

I am used to shortening a movie clip on either end, but don't know how to cut out a portion in the middle. Please help me. Thank you.

    Hello Miriam Griggs
There are a few ways you can do that. Check out the  page below and it will layout the multiple ways to trim clips, even the stuff in the middle.

  • How can I reduce a large podcast video without losing quality?

I am in the process of putting online a podcast video, that I have exported for ipod with quicktime. However, the file is rather large (100MB) and it is complicate for me to break it into smaller files. As I start iWeb it warns me that the file is large and it would require long download times. I was wondering if there was a way to reduce the size of podcast/ipod files without compromising quality too much.
    Thank you very much!

  • How can I print out the graph I need only, without the controls and indicators?

I'm doing some programming in LABVIEW. I need to print out only the graph, without the buttons, controls, indicators. I tried to look for such a function in LABVIEW, but in vain. How can I achieve the result I expect in my programming?

    Hi Fenny,
you should use the report generation functions to create a report containing your graph image and print it.
Take a look at the Sample Test Report.vi you find in the report examples of LV.
Just look at the part of the diagram where it is used Append Control Image to report.vi (in the center of the report functions chain); a graph reference is wired to the Ctrl reference input ( to create a reference of your graph right click on it and select create reference).
Let me know if you need more help,

I do not know if the itunes giftcard i currently have has been activated and can be redeemed. • What's the best way of importing, editing, exporting and watching AVCHD videos without losing quality?

Whenever I import AVCHD (.mts extension files) to Final Cut Pro X (via Import from camera), iMovie, Adobe Premiere Elements 10 or Adobe Premiere Pro CS4; when I later export those videos to any format I can imagine, I can't get the same quality than when I play them through the camera connected by HDMI to TV (the camera's movements are not any smooth).
How have you solved this problem? Is it just me?
By the way, maybe the problem is in watching: what apps do you use to play the exported media? Do you watch the final videos just on TV? Do you create blu-ray discs?
I was also wondering what would happen if I created a blu-ray image, have you tried this?
    Thanks in advance,
    Pol

My video was shot by a Canon HF100 at 1440x1080 25fps 1080i 25i (interlaced) and imported to Final Cut Pro X without transcoding to ProRes (1st time) and transcoding (2nd time).
The project settings are set to: set automatically based on 1st video clip (so they're 1440x1080 1080i 25i) and I used to leave Audio and Render to default settings (Surround, 48kHz, ProRes 422), but I have also done a few tests with ProRes 422 HQ and Uncompressed 10-bit 4:2:2. Should I try with ProRes 4444?
I usually export the project using Current settings (in video codec), and I've also burned an AVCHD DVD (I plybacked it on PlayStation 3 - also looked choppy). I've also exported to H.264 codec.
The video looks choppy on Mac played by Quicktime and VLC. The video I could export to MP4 also looked choppy on PlayStation 3 and Samsung LED TV.
    Thanks for taking your time,
    Pol

  • How can I get my text into a wedge shape (without losing quality)?

I'm using PS CS3... So the effect I'm going for is like what you would get if you had an image, and you do Edit > Transform > Distorted it, moving the lower right corner towards the center. The problem is that Distort is not an option for text layers . I tried making my text layer into an image layer and distorting it, but this method make my letters look pixelated. The closest I've got is to do Layer > Type > Warp Text with zero Bend and a negative Horizontal Distortion... But doing that makes both the top AND bottom of my text taper inward. I only want the BOTTOM part of the text to slope. Please help!

One could convert the Text to a Smart Object and then apply the Distortion or Warp.
If the result appears pixelated one could open the SO and increase the resolution, which should alleviate the problem somewhat.
Edit: In CS3 the perspectival transformation for SOs is not directly available, but can be simulated with Warp.
A further option would be creating a Layer with a Vector Mask from the Text (Layers – Type – Convert to Shape; best done on a duplicate of the original text layer) and transform that; this would maintain sharp edges at the price of losing text-editability.

  • How to export a slideshow in iPhoto 9.5 without losing quality

    Hi
Would appreciate comments from the forum on how to best export a slideshow in iPhoto 9.5 without losing quality. I tried the highest quality option on the export menu but still noticed a signficant degradation in the quality of the slideshow in iPHoto vs the exported file.
I read some of the posts on earlier versions of iPhoto were the "Custom Export" could be used but understand this functionality has been removed from the latest version (iPhoto 9.5).
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

In iPhoto, when you play a slideshow it's showing you the actual photos.
After export , you're watching a movie made from these images. The process of exporting to a movie necessarily involves compression. Even HD export is still about 2 MP range. If you're shooting 6, 10, 12 or more MP images there is an inevitable loss of data. The enormous stills from your camera are being squeezed down into HDTV quality. It's even worse if you try export for a DVD. TV avoids this by not shooting such high quality images.
So, what you can try is use another app and one that has different algorithms for this process. Frankly, it'll be a process of trial and error to find the one that works best for your images.
    Alternatives to iPhoto's slideshow include:
iMovie is on every Mac sold. It's worth a try, though it only has the same export options as iPhoto now. Older versions had more.
    Others, in order of price:
    PhotoPresenter  $29
    PhotoToMovie  $49.95
    PulpMotion  $129
FotoMagico $29 (Home version) ($149 Pro version, which includes PhotoPresenter)
    Final Cut Pro X $299
It's difficult to compare these apps. They have differences in capability - some are driven off templates. some aren't. Some have a wider variety of transitions. Others will have excellent audio controls. It's worth checking them out to see what meets your needs. However, there is no doubt that Final Cut Pro X is the most capable app of them all. You get what you pay for.

  • How to resize large images without losing quality

Hello I have an image that I am trying to use as an email. Right now it is 2108 pixels. And for an email it should be 600 px. I created this image in illustrator as vectors and type.
Whenever I go into image size and i change it to be 600 pixels it gets extremely blurry. I have also tried converting this to a smart object... doesnt work. How do I resize my large image to be smaller without losing quality???

here is an example sceenshot of the opening dialog (.ai opened directly in Photoshop)
your illustrator vector should be rastered sharp at 100% actual Pixels in Photoshop
that is where you want to evaluate sharpness in Photoshop...
then File> Save for Web & Devices (and drag that saved file icon into an open web browser)
still no joy, embed your saved image here using the forum's camera icon...

  • How to export from iMovie HD without losing quality?

I created a movie in iMovie HD made from clips from my camera which records great quality HD video, and now I want to export it and save as a movie file so that I can import it into iMovie '09 as part of a larger project. However, every time I try to export it, the resulting file has noticeably worse quality than when I view it in iMovie HD. I have tried the "full quality" option which exports as a .mov file, but the quality is much worse. I have also tried "Expert settings" choosing DV, AVI and MPEG-4 and have changed the settings to the best options I could find, but still the quality is worsened every time. How can I export my video without losing quality??

Do you mean import what I have in iMovie 09 into iMovie HD/06 instead? I suppose I could but I wanted to add some of iMovie 09's titles and adjustment effects to my iMovie HD/06 project, so it could get quite complicated trying to piece it all together. I may have to do that as a last resort, but does anyone know any way I can get around this?
I would think there must be some way to save my iMovie 06 file as something other than an iMovie file without losing quality... but things aren't always that easy are they?
