How do I delete all songs on an external drive?

iTunes recently decided to scan my computer for addtional music and it found and added all the songs in a backup folder on an external drive. Now I have duplicates of over 2000 songs in my iTunes. I want to delete all the backups and use only the original songs on my hard drive in iTunes. Unfortunatly, I cannot tell them apart just by looking at them in the list view. To delete them manually, I have to "get info" for each song and check the "where" at the bottom to see which folder it is from. This is taking forever. Is there a way to delete an entire folder from iTunes, just like you can add a folder? Is there a way to display the folder address in the list view so I could sort by that and delete them all. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Thanks, I tried that, but iTunes also added a lot of songs from my hard drive on that same date that I do not want to delete. So I cannot just delete every song added on that date.
OK, here's what to do. Unplug the external drive. (Nothing will change immediately about your iTunes library.) Next, sync your iPod. iTunes will tell you which songs it could no longer find, and also it will note them with an exclamation point. Then you will know which library entries to delete.

    Hello there, Laetidela.
The following Knowledge Base article offers up some great steps on how to move your iTunes library from an external hard drive to your computer:
iTunes: How to move your music to a new computer
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4527
    External drive
This option requires more work than Home Sharing, but it creates a backup of your iTunes library on the external drive in addition to moving your content.
    Notes before you start:
You can use most iPods as an external drive.
Windows operating systems don't recognize Mac OS-formatted disks (HFS or HFS Plus formats). Because of this, you can't use a Mac-formatted iPod or external drive to move your music to a Windows PC. See iPod: How to determine iPod's hard disk format if you're not sure how your iPod is formatted.
Mac OS X can read Windows-formatted iPods and drives. This means there are many ways to migrate your information from your old Windows-based PC to your new Mac.
Mac OS X: To be sure external drives appear on your desktop, choose Preferences from the Finder menu. Be sure the options for "External disks" and "Hard disks" are enabled.
Part 1: Locating and consolidating the iTunes Media folder
Part 2: Copy iTunes folder from the old computer:
Part 3: Get iTunes ready on your new computer
Part 4: Back up any music that's already on your new computer
Part 5: Copy music to your new computer
Part 6: Add preexisting music that was on the new computer back into the library

  • How can I delete all songs from iCloud library?

    Hi,
I have a strange issue and couldn't really find any information about this on Google, so I thought I would try here. I'm kind of surprised this hasn't come up for other users yet (or maybe it has and I'm just missing it.)
I matched my iTunes library yesterday. About 60% of the songs were matched, 15% were uploaded and 25% were errored. I really like iTunes Match but I decided that I want to micromanage the library to get the best match results. To do this, I wanted to do the following:
    1. Remove all songs from my iCloud library
    2. Create a new iTunes library for use with iTunes
    3. Add to the library, artist by artist to match/correct.
I began to do this in my new library and it was working fine. However I then decided to completely clear the old library, so I went into my original library, deleted all songs and definitely selected the option to delete from iCloud. I am 100% positive I did this. However, none of the songs deleted. They are not available in my original library (I have checked the option to display songs not on this computer) and they don't show up in my other library, either. I have no option to download the songs from iTunes on any computer, though I retain access from my iPhone.
So, I need to delete these songs from iCloud. It does me no good to have them there when they're so disorganized and especially when I can't access them from most of my iTunes enabled devices. I was thinking of calling Apple to see if they could clear my iCloud library but a. I'm not sure they will and b. I don't want to pay $29 to discuss this with them, as I feel it is an issue with iTunes Match/iCloud and should be complimentary.
I thought that maybe the songs would delete over time, since I know the iCloud servers are heavily taxed at the moment. However, it has been about 15 hours and there is absolutely no change. The iMatch section of iTunes shows that there are songs available, but none of them are; and since my plan is to reupload to iCloud anyway, that's fine--I just need to find out how to actually make the delete go through.
    Thanks!

I called Apple and spoke with a customer service representative regarding this issue. I was given the two things to try, and if they don't work, I was told I can call back in:
    1. Go to iCloud.com and look at the advanced options. Since Photos can be deleted here, the representative thought there may be an option to remove songs here as well.
    2. Go into the library that has the songs that were deleted and click Update iTunes match.
I tried #1--this didn't resolve the issue, as there is no option to remove songs this way. I can't try #2 right now since I'm at work, but if anybody else with this issue can try that step it can help us get the ball rolling on it. After I try that, I'll call Apple back to discuss this further.

  • How can I delete all songs and data from my 80GB ipod classic without opening itunes?

I have an older 80GB ipod classic that works but will not play any songs. I'm trying to delete all songs and data from the hard drive to see if that will fix the problem, however, it will not appear in my itunes. I've tried various ways to help it appear in my itunes but I do not want to delete my itunes because I have another ipod that has all those songs on it.
I was wondering if there was a way to restore my ipod back to the beginning without having to go through itunes. Thanks!

It might, but I wouldn't bet much on it.  Either way, give it a shot.
Otherwise, if appears in Windows an external hard disk, try a low level reformat of the device's hard drive.  See here for instructions on how to do this.

  • Transfered all songs to an external drive and now cant access them

I thought I could move my songs to an external drive and still access them the same way I did when they were on my PC. I have the external drive plugged in Itunes gives a message "the song could not be used because the orriginal file could not be found. Would you like to locate it." I can then search and find it on the external drive one song at a time. I wnat the Itunes to work as if the song were in their orriginal location. Can this be done with out mooving them one by one back to an almost full hard drive?

Yes you could move everything back to your computer start over with a new a new library if you wish. Just so long as you aren't concerned about things like ratings or playlists or the number of times something was played etc. If the songs are all in one folder you could add that folder to your new library and it would bring all the songs with it just go to Edit>Add Folder to Library. To create or access a second (or more) library, hold down the Shift key in Windows when launching iTunes. In the resulting dialogue you will get the option to create a new library or open an existing one: Using multiple iTunes libraries -Windows

  • How can I delete all songs associated with an Apple ID from my library?

I added songs from my friend's library to my library; however, many of his songs were purchased on the iTunes Store.  I cannot play these tracks as my computer is not authorized to play them.  How can I easily remove all songs associated/purchased with with an Apple ID from my library?
    Thanks for the help!

Go to appleid.apple.com, click Manage your Apple ID and sign in, select the Name, ID and Email Addresses section, then click Edit next to her name to the right and change as necessary.
If she is using iCloud email and needs to change her sender name on an iOS device, go to Settings>Mail,Contacts,Calendars...tap iCloud under Accounts, tap your iCloud account at the top of the next screen, tap Mail at the bottom of the next screen, then enter the name you want to use in the Name field at the top.  Also go to icloud.com, sign into her account, open Mail, click the gear shaped icon on the bottom left and choose Preferences, go to the Accounts tab and enter the name she wants to use in the Full Name field and click Done.

  • How do I delete all "songs that can not be located" at one time?

In trying to move my music files around from drive to drive in my computer, I messed up somehow (I don't know what I'm doing, exactly and am just making things up as I go along)....but long story short, I now have duplicates of most of the songs in my music library. With each set of duplicates, there is one music file that plays fine and is "located" to the new drive (where I was trying to move everything) AND a duplicate of that music file that "cannot be located". My ultimate goal is to just delete all the duplicate titles that can't be found. Is there a way to group them all together more easily that using the Ctrl key to hunt and peck then delete them in chunks? Help!! Thanks!

Using a playlist to collect dead tracks.
Create new regular playlist – Playlist1
Select whole library and drag to Playlist1
Create new Smart Playlist with the rule: Playlist is not Playlist1
Live updating checked – after you run it, uncheck live updating or you may not be able to delete tracks.
This playlist should contain all the dead tracks ready for deletion

Or you can use a Robert Jacobson script - iTunesremovenotfound at:
    http://mysite.verizon.net/teridon/itunesscripts/
The playlist method doesn't work on large libraries - iTunes get indigestion.

  • How can I delete all my documents in iCloud Drive?

I started using iCloud drive on my PC, but it has got in a complete mess syncing the files. I want to delete all files and start again. If I try to delete them on iCloud.com I can only delete a few files at a time (if I select too may it gives an error "there was a problem deleting XYZ please try again later" which is very tedious). I have unlinked my PC and all my apple devices from iCloud drive.

Having the same problem same as this one:
Installed "Arc-Media" S/W was automatically installed on iCloud Drive, after connecting, with USB, to an older Kodak camera. Did this in order simply save just a few (10 pix) to iCloud.
The Arc Media files, from the program somehow got stored on iCloud drive too.  Here's the kicker. When I tried to delete these files from iCloud Drive, somehow, some Network drivers and adapters for my PC's WiFi were deleted or corrupted with them. I lost all ability to log-in on my Wireless Network!
My wirelss provider could not troubleshoot since the problem was not with their Network; it was with my PC's sudden loss of Railink Network Adapters. It took 5+ hours on this PC reinstalling them from an "HP Manager site".
Therefore, my question and concern is: HOW do we delete "program files" unintentionally installed on an iCloud Drive, without affecting or losing other System Files? Do we need to completely "uninstall" and "re-install" iCloud Drive on a PC? If so, will I lose the photos/videos already stored?
Also, can someone--ANYONE please, post a single link to go to, without having to muddle through tons of other links, just to COMPLETELY UNINSTALL iCLOUD DRIVE?

  • How do I view all "volumes" of my external drive?

I have seagate external drive, and today I notice that my tivo transfer folder was gone. All the files are still there, but apparently, the drive now mounts as "Mac External/Volumes/Mac External 4"
To my surprise, my tivo files are on Mac external 3, however I can not get that to mount except when I open my tivo transfer program, I see they are still there.
How do I mount all the volumes of my external drive 1,2,3,& 4? I want to delete all these extra volumes and just have 1. I have no idea how I ended up with all these different volumes.

There is nothing you can do to stop another computer writing anything it wants on a hard drive. No matter what you do to the drive, he could always reformat and do anything he wants. Can you send him data on DVD-R disks instead?

  • Moving songs to an external drive

    Hi,
I know this may sound like a stupid question, but I'm not an iTunes user, my husband is... My hard drive is completely full because he has downloaded too many songs. We have a huge external drive. How do I physically move the songs to my external drive so that they can play in iTunes?
Also, can I delete the songs after they are exported? HOw will I know they were moved successfully? How do I open the songs from the external drive in iTUnes?
Thanks in advance to whomever answers my questions! Happy July 4th!

The simplest way to move itunes on to an external drive is:
    Close iTunes
copy your iTunes folder onto the external drive. (That's My Music\iTunes)
Start iTunes with the shift key held down and when asked to choose a library navigate to the itunes folder on the external drive and choose iTunes Library.itl.
If everything works OK, rename the iTunes folder on the internal drive and make sure everything still works.
Once you are ABSOLUTELY certain everything works OK you can delete the old iTunes folder, which you renamed.
Most peope's recycle bin is not big enough to hold all the music so don't delete things until your are sure everything is working OK on the external drive.
It is also a good idea to have a separate backup of your music.
Note that this procedure only works if you have a standard set up with all your music in iTunes\iTunes Music.

How do I delete duplicate songs in my iTunes? I have hundreds and I don't want to delete them one by one. They were all added on the same date, so sorting by the date won't help.

Hi, if this is in regards to your library simply open up itunes and do the following steps:
    Click File
    Scroll down to "show duplicates"
A list will then appear of your duplicate song titles.
Be sure to CAREFULLY review each song to make sure it is a duplicate ( as I have some music that is the same song but live, acoustic etc...)
Proceed to manually delete each song from the list and leave alone any song that you wish to keep.
    Best of luck,

  • Each song on my iTunes has a duplicate. How do I delete all duplicates and prevent this from happening again in the future?

Each song on my iTunes has a duplicate. How do I delete all duplicates and prevent this from happening again in the future?

After I had updated to Itunes 11 (also on Windows 7), I had the same experience, but I suspect that it was because I accepted a proposal to set up an external media library in order to simplify security backups. An associated result was that I had lost all of my playlists!
What I did was to restore the entire library off my Ipod, using a very good program called PodToPC (a free download is available) selecting an option to replace all of the stuff in the Itunes library. I use the Ipod Classic simply because it has a large capacity to hold my collection of CD and Vinyls. No way was I going to modify duplicates of 10000 tracks in 750 playslists by hand!  I did have a few residual problems with some of the playlist specs but, after a few hours of work all was restored.
    I hope this is useful.
