Photos transferred from your computer are removed from the iPhone the same way they were transferred from your computer, via the iTunes sync process. To remove all such photos, deselect Sync Photos under the Photos tab for your iPhone sync preferences with iTunes followed by a sync.
Photos in your iPhone's Camera Roll can be imported by your computer as with any other digital camera followed by deleting the photos from the Camera Roll after the import process is complete.

When you say "account," do you mean your iTunes library, because your iTunes library is what is on your computer? Your iTunes library does not have an email address. An account that is related to iTunes is your Apple ID (which is an email address) and you use it as your user name to sign in to the iTunes Store, to make purchases. Changing your Apple ID will not make songs disappear from your computer's iTunes library.
If you had an Apple ID and used it to make song purchases from the iTunes Store, and then started using a different Apple ID, you should be able to re-download the songs purchased with the old Apple ID. In iTunes, sign in to the iTunes Store using your OLD Apple ID (and password). That may not be your current email address, but Apple uses it as your user name, so it does not matter.
On the iTunes Store Home screen, click on Purchased under QUICK LINKS. This takes you do the Purchased screen, where you can re-download previous song purchases (for that Apple ID) at no cost.
NOTE: If those song purchases are from more than a few years ago, you may also need to authorize your computer to play (and sync) songs for your old Apple ID.
For songs that were not purchased from the iTunes Store, if they are also gone, you cannot get them back unless you have a backup (or they are still loaded on your old iPod).

I was unable to delete 'Local Disk' files, (aggravating), and when I checked on my phone, all the photos were gone from the Camera app, yet there were still many photos in various collections in the Photos app. How do I delete those? Sometimes, hitting Select and Select All on a Collection allows me to hit the Garbage Can icon to delete, but sometime the Garbage Can is not there. I don't know why that is the case.

You can only delete photos directly from the Camera Roll and the Photo Stream. If the other photos are on your device because you sync'd them to it, you have to remove them the same way - via a sync.

In iOS 8, how can I delete pictures from photos app because I have run out of space, I need to delete at least 6 GB of pics. I deleted many purchased apps but it did not restore space. When I connect to iTunes it shows about 4 GB's allocated to documents & Data. I do not have any documents or data , also it shows a couple of GB's allocated to "other" I checked everything on the iPod and the only thing I can see using all my space is the pictures. Almost 12 GB's of space. I have all the videos and pics backed to iPhoto library on my iMac. The trash can is disabled on iPod, but enabled on iPhone and iPad. Why is the delete/trash can feature disable on my iopd? I need to delete the videos and a lot of pics.

Were the photos synced to the iPod?
If so you have to unsync them or use a third-party computer program like TouchCopy or PhoneView
An "other" larger than about 1 1/2 GB indicates corrupted files.

(They are backed up in Time Machine, but I like the immediacy of having them available.) So question 1 - is it possible to split the iphoto library so that the directory tree points to an external drive in some cases? And if that doesn't work--I am willing to export and delete some of these photos. However, an earlier delete left me with events that have a name in the event folder, but no photos. Question 2 -- How do I properly delete photos so that all references disappear?

Warning: Time Machine is not an Archiving application. It keeps rolling back ups. That means if you delete something from the source Mac it will eventually be also deleted from Time Machine. 2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
Now you have two full versions of the Library.
3. On the Internal library, trash the Events you don't want there
Now you have a full copy of the Library on the External and a smaller subset on the Internal
Some Notes:
As a general rule: when deleting photos do them in batches of about 100 at a time. iPhoto can baulk at trashing large numbers at one go.
You can choose which Library to open: Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library'
You can keep the Library on the external updated with new imports using iPhoto Library Manager

I have already put the originals into albums, edited them, and renamed them. Can I/should I delete all other versions located in Masters, I think? If I want to keep events, but want them to include the newly edited albums, can I delete the specific event and somehow bring the photos used in the album into a new event. Understand iPhoto just keeps space or manages photos, so how can I have events that include the edited pix and clean up disk space. Thanks.

It's very simple. If you want to use iPhoto, just let it manage things as it does. Other than that: Export from iPhoto and delete the image from iPhoto. That will remove the master and all versions.
If space is an issue... use an external disk.
Don't change anything in the iPhoto Library Folder via the Finder or any other application. iPhoto depends on the structure as well as the contents of this folder. Moving things, renaming things, deleting them or otherwise making changes will prevent iPhoto from working and could even cause you to damage or lose your photos.

There are a couple of ways to do this. As a precaution, I like to import my pictures to my computer first ... which gives me a backup of the photos, AND gives me the option to delete them after import. This article explains how:

I have taken it back to the Apple store genius bar, but they say they don't see anything wrong. Well unless you use it all day and experience the problems when they happen, you wont see anything wrong. But there are lots wrong with it. But this would be the same store as I purchased the phone. If this is an iCloud account the Outbox only appears when sending an email, so if it is still trying I suppose it should be showing now (not sure though, hard to replicate this)

Another person said, "Reset information in settings to restore to the default." That would erase ALL of the conetent I have on the phone and I do not want to erase all of the other settings and content from my iPhone -- just the contacts.

Go into Settings...Mail, Calendar and Contacts and siwtch off the Contacts section from the account in question.
The phone should ask you if you want to keep or erase the contacts stored on you phone.
However, if they aren't synched to anything and only exist on your iPhone, you'll have to delete them all one by one
