How do I delete an iMac back up from Time Capsule?

I am attempting to delete an iMac back-up (Bob's 20" iMac) which is located on my Time Capsule and I don't know if I'm doing it correctly.
In the Finder, I have located the backup as follows:           Bob'sTime Capsule>Data> Bob's 20" iMac
I right-clicked Bob's 20" iMac and selected  "Move to Trash"
A small Trash window has been chugging on my desktop for about 36 hours which ststes "Deleteing Bob's 20" iMac"
The size of the backup is 1.16 TB. Is this proceeding properly in which case I just need to be patient and wait for the process to finish?
Or, is therw another method I should use to delete said backup.
Thanks very much.

You are doing things the right way, so hang in there.
In general....if you are using an Ethernet connection between the Mac and the Time Capsule.....data will delete at a rate of about 30 GB per hour, so 1.2 TB...which is 1200 GB, will take require about 40 hours to delete the backup of the iMac.
If you are using wireless, unfortunately things will take, on average, about 3-4 times longer than using Ethernet. It all depends on the speed of your wireless connection.

  • How do I upload pictures to my blog from time capsule?

    Hi,
I just started using Time machine, or time capsule (not sure what the difference is). I had to back up my laptop because I only have 185 GB on my computer. I'm a photographer so I take tons of pictures. I started backing up my computer to the time capsule and then had to delete the original files off my computer to make enough space. Currently I have 1 GB of space left on my computer. I need to delete basically all of my photos on the computer so I have more room to even load new pictures onto the computer.
My problem is I need to access these pictures in time capsule so I can load pictures to my blog or website. I know how to look at the pictures in time capsule by going to iphoto and clicking the file thing, but there must be an easy way to upload pictures to the web from time capsule.
Basically if I can't use my pictures to upload them onto my blog/website my business is doomed... Please help me!

Suggest that you consider a few things here:
The Time Capsule (which is hardware) uses Time Machine (which is software) to make backups of the original files on your computer. The reason that you need backups is to have a copies of your important data in two different locations.
The reason for this is that when....not if....a disk drive fails on either your computer or Time Capsule, you at least still have a good copy of important files on the other drive.
If...you move the "original" files on your computer to the Time Capsule drive......all of your images are on the Time Capsule.....and you have no backups. When....not if....the Time Capsule drive fails, you lose everything.
I suggest that you consider the following:
Add an external hard drive that will attach directly to the USB or FireWire port your computer and move your the iPhoto library to that location.
Then, Time Machine will backup both your computer and the external drive, so you have your "originals" on one drive and backups on another.
The bottom line here is that the Time Capsule and Time Machine should be used for backups....not for everyday use. With an external hard drive attached directly to your computer, it will be a simple matter to navigate to the image file using iPhoto and "export" it to the desktop or another folder for uploading.
The Time Capsule is not meant for this type of use.

  • How to allocate x-GB amount of disk from Time Capsule to back up two Mac?

I have a 1TB Time Capsule, and two Mac - iMac with 320GB, and MacBook with 160GB. How can I allocate 600GB of the 1TB Time Capsule to back up my iMac, and 300GB of the 1TB Time Capsule to back up my MacBook? And leave the rest (around 100GB) just sitting around to act as a drop box.
    Kenneth

Hello kennethium. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
The sure way is to temporarily remove the Time Capsule's (TC) internal drive (voiding your warranty), and then, repartition it to three separate partitions of the sizes you desire. Finally, of course, reinstall the drive.
The other way that maybe partially possible is to create a disk image on the TC, using the Disk Utility for a size your require as the "drop box." I don't believe you can use disk images in this manner for Time Machine backups. Time Machine, in turn, should leave this disk image alone. The disadvantage of disk images is they are not accessible by Windows or Linux clients.

  • New iMac: cant use back up from Time Capsule to start it up

I decided to replace my 4 year old iMac with a new one.
Today, I installed the new iMac and had hoped to build it up using the last back up on the Time Capsule from the previous iMac. It took about 5 hours to copy something across, but it seems all I have are the applications. No iTunes, photos, or documents.
I am signed up for the iCloud, but have no idea if that is relevant.
    Thanks,
    Alan J

Did you use Setup Assistant when it first started up, or did you create a user account, then use the Migration Assistant app later on?  If the latter, see Problems after using Migration Assistant.

  • HT4500 How long will it take to transfer 400gb from time capsule to my iMac using mountain lion

I did a clean install on my iMac. Now I cannot access my backups. I can see the time capsule, but when I open time machine, I only have today  which is the newly installed system. I am now trying to use migration assistant to grab my files. I got to where I choose my time machine and entered my password. Now I don't see any action. How long will the transfer take?  My 500 gb time capsule is full. Should I be seeing something on my screen.

This depends on what the connection type is for the computer to the Time Capsule - wireless or Ethernet, how much data are involved, what generation of Time Capsule, and whether the transfers are to an HDD or SSD.

  • How do I delete an uncompleted saved folder in Time Capsule?

I have spent more than a few days searching for an answer to this problem in the support forum without success.
I was saving an important Folder from a previous 3 year old MacBook Pro as data folder (not backup) into my Airport Time Capsule, also about 3 years old (2nd generation I think) as I was having a lot of problems with the MBP. However, during the process, my MBP crashed and the transfer was incomplete. After I restarted the MBP, the Folder I copied into the Time Capsule is shown as a light shade text and when I click on this Folder it shows just a folder icon and not the contents of files and sub-folders in this Folder that may have been copied before the crash. The info says that the folder size is 20.52GB. I tried option key and delete but it stopped at 13,950 items with a statement "The operation can’t be completed because you don’t have permission to access some of the items." The folder is not locked, but I suspect some of the files in the folder may be locked.
Have just bought a new MBA and connected to the Time Capsule and still cannot delete this folder.
Can anyone assist. Thanks a million.

Do you have anything worth keeping on the TC?? If not erase it.
    See https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4865906?tstart=0
The quick erase will take about 1-2min. Reformat the drive.
If there is stuff you do need to keep on the TC. Try creating an empty folder with the same name as the existing one.. that can delete the folder. Although I may not be remembering all the details.
    I am hunting.
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/22895031#22895031
Seems to be extraordinary that a new folder of the same name deletes the old one but there you go .. it worked for at least one user.

  • Back up from Time capsule to External Drive

I want to move all of my media from my hard drive on one macbook to my time capsule. i currently use the time capsule with time machine to back up my hard drive. but, i have multiple computers. at home, i have a macbook and a macbook air. at work, i have an imac. i'd like to keep my photos, videos and music on the time capsule's hard drive, so i can access it from each computer. i have the time capsule registered with mobileme, so i can see the contents of it from each computer. presumably, then, if i put the media on that disk, i can access it from each location.
but, now i want to have a back up of all of that media. i have an external hard drive i can plug into the time capsule. my question is this: is there a way to use the time capsule as i have described and then have the time capsule's contents backed up to the external hard drive? if not, is there a way to put everything on the external hard drive, connected to the time capsule, access the content from all three computers, and then have the external harddrive back up to the time capsule?
any help would be really appreciated!

Hi, and welcome to the forums.
No, Time Machine cannot back-up any network drive.
Your options are limited. See #Q6 in the Using TIME MACHINE with a TIME CAPSULE *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum.

  • Messed up Utilities Folder, can't access system info, won't back up from time capsule

My iMac has 2 harddrives. 250 start up and 1tb  HD2. I was trying to make room on the 250 drive, and moved the Utilites folder to HD 2. Couldn't get system info, so tried moving Utilites folder back. Still can't get info, and there's an empty long bar under the size column beside the Utilities folder, even though the  items in each sub folder have a size reading.   There's a size reading in the HD 2 where I had moved it to.  There are probably other things I have now messed up. Also, when I tried backing up the computer from the time capsule to predate the changes, I got a case sensitive error and it won't restore...what have I done???

Can't connect to Sonos now that I've switch Time Capsule from Bridge Mode to DHCP and NAT.
There was a reason why AirPort Utility either configured the Time Capsule in Bridge Mode automatically, or told you to set up the Time Capsule in Bridge Mode.
Bridge Mode is the correct setting for the Time Capsule on your network.
If you want to run the Time Capsule in DHCP and NAT router mode, then your Comcast modem/router must then be configured to act as if it were a simple bridge mode modem.  Whether that is even possible is a question for the support folks at your ISP, since providers in general seem to be locking down the settings on the devices that they provide to prevent users from changing the basic operation of the device.  ISPs do this to make things simpler for the their support folks, as you might imagine.
The simplest and best option......if possible......would be to swap the current modem/router for a simple bridge mode modem.......the kind of device that will have only one Ethernet port.
The worst option......Double NAT.....is in my opinion not worth fooling with, since it can cause unpredictable things to occur on your network. Sure, some users can get away this setting.....on a very simple home network.....but yours does not meet this qualification.
Strangely, we have seen some posts from users who claim to have been told by Apple Support to "ignore" a Double NAT error. That is hard to believe.

  • Retrieving a back-up from Time Capsule

Hi there, I'm hoping someone out there can help me!
I completed my back-ups via a wireless connection from my Mac Pro G5. However, I've recently had to wipe my hard drive.
I have a complete back-up on my time capsule, however, the G5 only seems to recognise the time capsule wirelessly. When I try to connect the Time Capsule via ethernet, the G5 doesn't seem to recognise it.
I'm having to use migration assistant to move everything across wirelessly and it is taking forever!
Does anyone have any previous experience with this issue?
    Thanks in advance, Andrew

Your backups are safe unless you manually erase the disk.
We still don't know how your TC is configured, so it may take some guesswork initially.
Open AirPort Utility and click Manual Setup
Click the Wireless tab below the icons
Write down all of the settings that you see on the Wireless page
    Change Wireless Mode to Off
    Update to save settings
You should now be able to connect using an ethernet cable from your computer to one of the LAN <-> ports on the TC.
Keep the ethernet cable connected after you have transferred your files.
Open AirPort Utility and click Manual Setup
    Click the Wireless tab
Enter all the settings that you wrote down before
    Update to save settings

  • Deleting Sparse Disk Image Bundle from Time Capsule

Howdy. Thanks in advance for help on this issue to anyone kind enough to spend time answering it.
I've got a 1TB Time Capsule which I use primarily for external file storage - it's currently got just about 120GB of files on it which I have manually copied there. I only sporadically use Time Machine to do automated backups, but since I've had the Time Capsule for a good long while, there have been many backups, and relatively little space left on it. As I am not interested in files that are 8 months old, I have gone into Time Machine and deleted all the old backups I don't want, then done a fresh backup so there's a current copy of everything on my laptop. It's my understanding that deleting backups from within Time Machine clears space off the Time Capsule, and when I did those deletions, saw that the available space on my Time Capsule did in fact increase, but not nearly as much as I would have expected.
Now, there's a file sitting on my Time Capsule called a "Sparse Disk Image Bundle.dmg", which has a filesize of 564GB - so there's where all the "free" space on my Time Capsule is accounted for.
My question is, if I know that I don't want the contents of all the old backups, but I DO want a copy of the files I have manually copied onto my Time Capsule, is it safe to delete the 564GB .dmg file? I use my Time Capsule more than anything else as the repository for my iTunes library, and it'd be a huge bummer if I wiped out my entire music collection by deleting that file.
So far as I can tell, the contents of my Time Capsule and that .dmg file are separate, but I don't know enough to know whether that's really the case.
    Any advice is well appreciated!

Hi, and welcome to the forums.
Yes, network backups are in an odd container called a +sparse bundle.+ It should be named with your Computer name plus a string of 12 numbers and letters (the hardware address of your Mac).
Do you see your "other" files separate from it? They shouldn't be inside it, unless you specifically copied them into it.
As long as they're shown separately, yes, you can safely delete the sparse bundle. That will delete all your backups, though, and take quite a while. If it seems to be taking forever, see the blue box in #12 of [Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/FAQ.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).
There is an alternative, however. You can limit the +maximum size+ of the sparse bundle, per #A8 in [Time Machine - Troubleshooting|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/Troubleshooting.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum). As noted there, however, if you update to Snow Leopard, 10.6.3 or later, it will be automatically re-sized to the size of the TC's internal HD.
If it's already too large, you may need to delete some more backups and/or "compact" it first. See the pink box in #12 of the FAQ.

  • How do I delete the iCloud back up from your previous iPhone that was used to restore my new iPhone?

My phone was replaced yesterday by the apple store. I restored my data from my old phone onto my new phone. Now I am receiving alerts from iCloud that I do not have enough memory to back up my new phone. I noticed that I have the old iPhone , my iPad, and this iPhone. When I try to delete my old profile, the system does not allow it as it is currently in use. As a result, I cannot back up my new iPhone due to not enough memory. Is there a way to delete the old profile?

    Hi Cynatalya!
Here is an article that can help you manage your iCloud storage:
    iCloud: Managing your iCloud storage
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4847
Specifically, this section addresses your exact question:
Deleting backups and turning off Backup for your device
    iOS device
Tap Settings, and then tap the iCloud icon.
    Tap Storage & Backup.
    Tap Manage Storage.
Tap your iOS device in the Backups area.
    Tap Delete Backup.
You will be asked to confirm this change. Deleting this backup will also turn off Backup of your iOS device. Choose Delete if you want to turn off Backup and remove all backups for this iOS device from iCloud.
Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities!

  • On an iMac backing up with Time Capsule -- several Firefox windows open w/tabs -- Firefox froze -- had to force quit. In the past the various windows and tabs reappeared on restarted Firefox. Not this time. How to recover windows and tabs.?

I think what I have written (above) sums up my problem. I can't think of anything to add.

When a new bookmark is added to one "device", Sync immediately sends that change to the Sync Server. And if you are watching a different "device" you should see the newly saved bookmark almost immediately. ''At least I have seen it happen that fast when Syncing between two Profiles on my desktop PC and I had both Profiles running and Tiled vertically, with the Bookmarks Sidebar open.''
Keep in mind that internet congestion and Sync Serve load may slow then seemingly "immediate" action down a bit.
As far as '''Tab''' Sync goes, open Tabs are Sync'd to the Server as Firefox is closed. I'm not sure, but I believe '''Tab History''' is Sync'd to the Server as each tab is closed.
I'm not sure if a complete Tab History is Sync'd to a tablet device, or if like on a mobile phone the last 25 or so URL's are sync'd as "history" to the mobile device.
Sorry, I can't advise you on whether to purge your data or to create another Sync account, I have never used those features. I am surprised that you don't have another email account to use to set up a 2nd account; it isn't that hard to create another email account at Gmail.

  • Removing old Time Machine back ups from Time Capsule

I have just purchased a new iMac (2.7GHz Intel Core i5 running LION) that I am using to replace both my wife's old iMac (2GHz Intel Core Duo running Snow Leopard) and my 17" MBP Intel Core Duo - we've both made the switch to iPads for lap browsing. I migrated my user accounts from both the MBP and old iMac to the new iMac and I want use TimeCapsule as my back up disk. However, I cannot back up my new machine because the older back ups that I no longer need take up most of the TCs disk space.
How can I remove the older, no longer needed backups from TimeCapsule to make room to run back ups of my new iMac? I've tried deleting the sparsebundle, but that did not seem to work.
If anyone can help, please be as detailed as possible in how to remove the back ups. Thanks in advance.

    Thanks for the tip.
You did forget to mention that it is necessary to click on the "MANUAL SETUP" button located at lower left part of the Airport Utility window to get to the Disk.
I went through the more generic/standard setup windows a couple of times because I was not seeing the disk and thought I was missing something. After I had an "ah-ha" moment and clicked the manual setup key, everything was there and erasing the disk was easy.
    Thanks again,

  • How Do I Delete backup data from Time Capsule if have 2 computers on 1 TC?

I have been backing up 2 computers (one desktop/one laptop) to a 1TB Time Capsule. I have now added an external hard drive for the desktop computer and would like to delete that computer's backups from Time Capsule to free up space for the laptop computer. How do I delete the desktop computer's backup data from Time Capsule without disturbing the laptop back ups? Do I drag the desktop computer's backups.backupdb and sparsebundle to trash and empty?

Thanks though I am still a bit confused as I had read NOT to delete via Finder, but via Disk Utility (erase). Does it make any difference?
You're probably referring to the advice never to change, move, or delete anything inside your backups via the Finder, as that can corrupt them.
A number of folks have tried to delete a single backup that way, and caused all sorts of troubles.
Deleting the entire sparse bundle is ok.
