How do I delete an old user account?

About 8 months ago my dad gave me his Macbook Pro. He had used up about 150 out of the 250 gb available on the computer so I deleted his account, but while deleting the account my computer crashed. Ever since then my computer has not had the free space it would from deleting everything that was on his account. I have run out of space now and can't find a trace of his things anywhere. How do I delete all of these old files?

The applications are stored in a global folder to be used by everyone, so deleting a user doesn't delete the programs installed.
If you don't want to do it manually, you could backup what files you do want to keep off the machine and erase OS X and everything in it's entirety and then reinstall it with the programs you want then files last.

First of all, you need to make sure your current user account (the one you intend to keep) is an administrator account (not standard).
Go to System Preferences Accounts pane. Click the lock, if it's locked, and enter your authorization, to unlock.
In the sidebar, you will see the list of user accounts. To delete a user account, select it on the list and click the minus sign.

That's the classic behaviour after using Migration Assistant and that's normal.

Hi Did you use the same Apple ID toxset up new iPhone? Try a Reboot press & hold power button & menu button hold both down until you see Apple Logo. You may need to do this for upto 50 Seconds. Cheers Brian

If your device is signed into an old ID of yours that is an earlier version of the ID you want to sign in with, do the following:
If you are using iMessage and FaceTime, make sure you are signed into these services with your current ID. If they are signed into the old ID, go to Settings>Messages>Send & Receive and Settings>FaceTime, tap the ID, sign out, then sign back in with your current ID.
Then temporarily recreate the old ID by going to https://appleid.apple.com, click Manage my Apple ID and sign in with your current iCloud ID. Click edit next to the primary email account, change it back to your old email address and save the change. (You should not have to verify the old email account so it doesn’t matter if you no longer have access to it.) Now go to Settings>iCloud, turn off Find My iDevice and enter your current password when prompted (even though it prompts you for the password for your old ID). Then save any photo stream photos that you wish to keep to your camera roll (unless you are using iCloud Photo Library). When finished go to Settings>iCloud, tap Sign Out (or Delete Account if you are not running iOS 8) and choose Delete from My iDevice when prompted (your iCloud data will still be in iCloud). Next, go back to https://appleid.apple.com and change your primary email address back to the way it was. OK that's what Ithought you were talking about.
You can't actually delete an old Apple ID. You just sign into the new ID to use that one. Your old ID must be popping up because you used it in the past to purchase content with it. You cannot transfer purchases from one Apple ID to another Apple ID. You have to continue to use the old ID if you want to update content that was used to purchase with that ID.
Did you sign into your new account in the settings and you can't stay signed in?

I have a macbook pro 13" 2008 with 8 gb of ram that has been showing stuttering in hd video lately (or maybe when i upgraded to lion). I created another user and it doesn't seem to suffer any stuttering. Perhaps it doesn't have weird things running the background like the 655mb kernal task I see in activity monitor. My question is, how do I make my old user account perform like the new one? I've tried to turn off things running the background, but it doesn't seem to do anything. Thanks!

You have to open iTunes -> click iTunes Store and login with the old email and then logout -> Now login with the new email that you want and connect your iPhone via USB to your computer and synchronize your iPhone with new email.
