How do I delete email without opening it?

I can't seem to delete an email without opening it, and I'm worried about malware and all that. How do I delete an email without it getting opened? I've tried selecting it with another message and then deleting the group, but it still opens. Someone told me to double-click the separator bar between the preview and message panes, but nothing happens when I do that.
I am a new Mac user, only been at this a few weeks, so please bear with me and use small words. Thank you for helping a noob.

Tuttle's tip of putting your arrow icon in the middle of a message and dragging to the trash is a good one.
If your concern is that selecting an email will trigger hidden tags in html messages giving the sender the opportunity to see if you clicked on their email then your point is valid.
Apple Mail defaults to loading remote images in HTML based email.  You can turn this setting off by going to the menubar and choosing Mail > Preferences.  Chose the Viewing option and turn off "Display remote images in HTML messages."
Now when you delete a message it won't matter if you selected it or not.

  • How do I delete emails without having to open them please? I have a Mac Air. Using my previous PC I could delete emails without opening but I don't seem to be getting this option on the Mac. Thanks.

I am new to using a Mac. How do I delete emails without opening them? Using my old PC it was possible to delete suspect emails prior to opening them, however I don't seem to be given this option. If I click on a message it opens straight away and I am worried about opening emails when I don't know where they are from. Thanks

All I can suggest is that you open that file on the MBA and save it as a new file, then see if you can open the new one on the iMac.

In your mail list, do you see the word 'edit'? If you choose that then you can select whatever mails you want gone and delete them at once.

  • Since last update I do not have a "delete" button showing on a toolbar. Therefore, I cannot delete emails without opening them. Please help.

Ask Apple to re-enable it. I had an unauthorized purchase last October. They disabled my account until the problem was solved. However, I asked them to reopen it, and they just asked me to provide some security information (billing address, a recent purchase you made, etc.), and then they re-enabled it.

  • Spoofing ??  Delete eMail without opening 'Mail'

Can I delete a specific emails without opening the 'Mail' program? A company sent me an email saying I must log in to a certain web site. I don't want to do this, and want to instead delete this message. I did manage to move it to the TRASH so I can again use Mail. But if I attempt to open TRASH to delete everything, I get this pop up window that puts me in a loop.

What you need to do to avoid reading messages that have these types of popups embedded is go to Mail > Preferences > Viewing and uncheck "Display remote images in HTML messages"; and change the configuration of your Mail window so that selecting a message does not open it in the viewing pane automatically.
To do this, open Mail, look for the horizontal bar with the dot in the middle running across the right side of the mail window and double-click it to move it to the bottom of the window. From then on, as long as that bar is positioned there, you will need to double-click a Mail message to open it, so you can delete any message without opening it or reading it.

I want to delete emails from the list without opening them. Is this possible on iPad Mail?

Swipe across them to delete them...

  • Received an infected email from someone whose computer was hacked. How do I delete it without opening?

I ask because just highlighting the email opens the message pane and therefore opens the file.

While you are looking at another message, press F8 to close the message pane. Then you can highlight the bad message (only one click!) and delete it with the Delete key or right click and chose delete.

  • Send email without opening mail app

    Hi
So how can I send email without opening mail app.
From: Overview of requested additional functionality, Ayuba Audu
    Hi Peter,
There are a couple of services available that support sending emails via REST API calls. Of course, each such service requires a WADL connector to be created, but by taking advantage of resources such as the early alpha of our
    WADL Generator, along with
our documentation, one will be enabled to do this.
This way you do not need to have the Mail application available, on the machine the app is running on.
    Thanks.
    Hi Ayuba
I guess the comment above was mentioned for this thread. If so can you please share a simple example file here or anywhere elese?
    Thanks

Basically all I'm trying to do is to build an app for multiple users in one company. Each employer (user) is stored in collection with their password and email address. To get access to man screen of the app, employee must login in login screen. Chose his
name and type the password. I want to add a button for forgotten password so in case one of the employee would forget his password he can click on the button and receive on his email his password. The email what he will get would be for example from
[email protected] with mail body : your password is 12345.
So is that what you meant I can do with WADL generator?

  • On an iMac why can't you delete an email without opening it?

Why can't I delete an email without opening it first? Is this not a security risk as I have always been advised that, if I don't know who the email is from, I should delete it so as to avoid opening any suspect attachments that open immediately.
This is my first Mac so could it be that I have not realised how to do this?
My wife can do this on her iPad.

    A couple of points:
    1. Your concern is not really an issue with macs. More of a PC thing. "Suspect attachments" are extremely, extremely rare for a mac. I mean, like one since 1984, when I bought my first mac. The reason is that Apple seems to be on top of things and keeps updating mac software to protect your mac from this sort of thing. Just keep up with the system updates and you won't have a problem. Microsoft, on the other hand, makes tons of security holes in their software because of their mindset, i.e., that the consumer is a moron and the enemy.
    2. In my mail.app, there are three columns in the message viewer, the first which lists the mailboxes, the second which lists the emails, and the third which is a preview window. I can select an email in the second column and delete it without opening it, so I don't see what the problem is that you're having.

How do I delete emails from my i phone, without highlighting each on eindividually, then deleting them one at a time. I would have thought you could highlight many emails then delete them all at once

In you mailbox you have an edit button up top on the right, click that and a button will show up next to each email, then you click the button on all the emails you want to delete.

How do you delete spam without first clicking on it and therefore opening it?

I'm running 10.6 so I don't know if this works the same in 10.7 -- I would think it will. But if you double click the separator at the center bottom of the Mail window, thereby expanding it (the mouse pointer will turn into a cross), you can then single click and highlight a message without opening it. Next hit CMD-Shift-S, which will save the message to the location of your choice (I use the Desktop), where you can safely read it without ever having opened it. If you like, you can trash the message at this point.
Double clicking the same point on the window will return the window to normal viewing.
And, yes, it's a good idea to never actually open spam. Also, make sure load remote images is turned off all the time. An opened remote image is one way spammers know they've found a sucker and they keep it up. If you never open spam, it discourages further spam.
Opening spam may sometimes actually "do something." A friend of my wife just recently opened a message and it stole her address book. But maybe she clicked on a link inside. Don't know all the details.

  • How do I delete email from my iPad and iPhone without deleting it from my laptop?

how do I delete email from my iPad and iPhone without deleting it on my laptop. I'm trying to free up space.

It would depend on the type of mail account you are using. If you have an IMAP or Exchange account deleting mail from one client is going to sync to the other clients. You cannot remove from one device and not the others. POP mail however, does allow one to delete mail from one client and it remain on the other clients. Because POP mail is downloaded to the individual clients, whereas mail in IMAP and Exchange resides on the server, and is just viewed on the individual machines.

  • How do I delete email from iPhone without deleting them from my Mac

How do I delete email from iPhone without deleting them from my Mac?

To remove a photo from iPhoto and your Mac:
Put it in the iPhoto Trash, then enpty it. Then empty the system trash as well
If you want to remove a photo from iPhoto but keep it on your Mac:
First Export the file from iPhoto (File -> Export) to whereever you want it and then go through the steps above.
Confusion arises as the notion that you would want to remove a pic from iPhoto but keep it doesn't make a whole lot of sense. It's like saying I want to remove one address from Address Book, but still keep it on my Mac. The point of iPhoto and such apps is that they are used to manage your photos. Anything that you need to do with the pics cn be done either with or via iPhoto.

On an iOS device, just go to Mail, then tap Edit in the upper right,  and tap the circle to the left of the messages you want to delete, then Trash lower right.  That removes them without having to open.
