How do I Delete music from my hard drive but keep it on my ipod?

My hard dive is full, I have an external that I am dumping a lot of files on, including music. I have enough space to maintain all of my music on my iPod but not my computer. I want to clear some of the music off my computer but I still want to have it on my Ipod. Anyone know how to do this?

You simply have to change the update option of your iPod to "manually manage music and videos". Connect your iPod and in iTunes go to Preferences>iPod, you can amend the option there: Managing content manually on iPod
One major word of caution. If you delete songs from your PC and have no back up other than the iPod you will risk losing them permanently if your iPod fails or you find you have to restore it to solve a problem. You should consider investing in an additional internal or external hard drive to store/back up your music. Alternatively at the very least back up songs you can't replace such as iTunes downloads to CD or DVD. Forum member Buegie has compiled a very extensive procedure for backing up your music which you'll find at this link: Backing up iTunes
Something else to be aware of when using an iPod in manual mode is that the "Do Not Disconnect" message will remain on the display until you physically eject the device. In that case use Safely Remove Hardware icon in the Windows system tray on your desktop or check this link: Safely Disconnect IPod

  • How do I remove music from my itunes library but keep it on my ipod

I am trying to download my cds onto my ipod.  I imported them into the itunes library and synced them onto my ipod but when I deleted them from my itunes library, they were deleted from my ipod.  Is there a way to download the music onto my ipod, remove the music from my itunes but not lose it on my ipod?  I share the computer with my wife and we don't want don't want each other's music on our ipods.

Make sure the iPod is NOT connected to your computer when you delete songs from iTunes.

How can I move music from a hard drive to iphone?

Import it into an iTunes library and then sync the iPhone with that library. If desired, launch iTunes with the Shift key held down and create or choose an iTunes library on that drive.

how do I transfer music from old hard drive to Mavericks?

    You need only post once.
More information would help.  The simplest answer is drag the files from the old drive to the iTunes window when you have the application open, or the Automatically Add To iTunes folder.  If you mean the whole library that is a different answer.

  • How to recover deleted songs from iTunes hard drive (not iPod)

I have a Western Digital hard drive that I use to play all of my mp3 files. Tonight I was creating a playlist by dragging and dropping songs. Although I thought I was editing the playlist, it turns out that I accidently deleted a song from my library ("MUSIC").
Now anytime that I delete something from the external hard drive, it ends up in the recycling bin on my desktop. But that does not seem to be the case with songs that I delete from the "MUSIC" library on my hard drive.
I'm confused. When I accidently deleted this song, where did it go? The folder containing the mp3 file is gone, it is no longer in iTunes and it never appeared in the Recycling Bin. In the past whenever I've accidently deleted a song, I simply went to the Recycling Bin and clicked on "Restore File".
Does anyone know where to find the missing file(s) and how to restore them to my 'MUSIC' folder in iTunes?
Note that this has nothing to do with my iPod, but rather the external hard drive associated with my PC.
Thanking everyone in advance who can help!
    Chad

How I wish it were that simple.
My Recycling Bin is empty, which is what is perplexing. Just to see if this function was working properly I deleted a song from the LIBRARY and guess what? It appeared in the Recycling Bin.
Its a mystery what has happened to these songs.
This has happened on several occassions. I waited years for a few rare songs to come out in digital because only vinyl copies existed. When Apple finally reached a licensing agreement to sell these songs, I downloaded them and created a playlist. Somehow the playlist disappeared including all of the songs from the library. I didn't think anything of it because I thought that I could simply go to iTunes, select PURCHASED songs and add them. To my suprise iTunes does not have a history of my purchase.
Finally, after much trouble back and forth with Apple customer support they sent me a link for two of the most recent songs that I downloaded, but the ones that I downloaded a year or more in the past.
The whole entire scenario has left me scratching my head.

  • How do I get music from External Hard Drive to iTunes?

Hi, I recently got an external hard drive to free up some memory on my powerbook. I put all of my music on there and deleted it from my computer, following the article about "Moving your iTunes folder". It copied most of the songs and worked temporarily, but then I had to erase my hard drive, because I was having some issues with a few programs. So now I have my "iTunes Music" folder on my external hard drive, and when I choose that as the source of music for the library and try to consolidate, nothing happens.
So, how can I use the folder on my external hard drive for my iTunes library? I even tried reloading it onto my PowerBook hard drive and importing from there, and it didn't work... Any help would be fantastic.

if your main library is on your external, then when not connected, you wont have access to it.
so first decide, where do you want to keep the files.
E.g. In my case, I keep my files on "C:\iTunes Music".
I have a backup on external "Z:\iTunes Backup". If I format my laptop, this is how I restore everything.
    Edit -> Preferences -> Advanced.
The iTunes music folder in selects as "C:\iTunes Music"
I have checked Keep iTunes Music Folder Organized, and also Copy Files to iTunes Music folder when adding to ibrary". Click OK to save and close preferences.
My iTunes list is now empty. I go to file, and select "Add Folder to Library". From that window, I select "Z:\iTunes Backup". iTunes then copies everything from the backup to "C:\iTunes Music". For me, backup is backup, I dont need it to play music.
Now decide this. If you do not want to keep music on C:, but want to only connect the external to update music on your ipod, do this:
In preferences, set iTunes Music folder as "Z:\iTunes Backup", and uncheck Copy files to iTunes Music folder, since they are already there. Then in files, select Add folder to library again to build and update the list.

  • I've deleted songs from my hard drive, but not itunes. How do I find the missing file entries in itunes?

The problem I have is that there are songs in my library that are no longer on my hard drive. I've either removed them or renamed them. And now, when iTunes comes across one of these song entries it gives the the prompt to locate it. I know that there used to be a way to find all these, but with all the changes in itunes 11, I have no idea how to do it now. Is there an easy way to highlight and delete all of these entries?

"One of the benefits of Match, right?  Saving hard drive space."
I would not use iTunes Match as a backup. There are too many bugs and I don't think that's what they intended it to be anyway. The main advantage of using it is to make your music available on OTHER devices, not to replace the music on your original computer.

  • How to play itunes music from external hard drive

How do I either play continuous music from my external hard drive, or make itunes recognize my external hard drive as the library.

    Hi Jim
I've recently upgraded to a macbook Pro and I copied all data, profiles etc across from my old macbook. I have also created a second account in my mackbook Pro. I am able to play my iTunes music from the external HD in the 'old' account, but not in the 'new' account, despite trying what you've said above. On the external HD, there are two folders: iTunes music and iTunes media. I have tried selecting each of these, but both times, I get this message: "An iTunes library file could not be found in the folder "iTunes Media". Please choose a different folder." ... Please can you help?
    Many thanks in advance!

  • How do I delete items from the hard drive?

Im trying to make more space in my hard drive and want to delete items that I no longer want or need. How do I see everything I have in my hard drive and delete it?

Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on freeing up space on the hard drive. Also Freeing space on your Mac OS X startup disk.
There are a few utilities for scanning the drive. One good one that is free - OmniDiskSweeper.

  • How do I delete backups from my hard drive

I have an external hard drive that backs up my laptop daily.  I am trying to create some movies but have run out of space on my laptop due to low memory.  When I check my hard drive it shows 79 GB as "Backups".  I do not need this backed up to my computer and would like to delete as I use external storage.  I can not find where these backups are so need direction to access and delete them.

  • How do i delete pictures from the camera roll, but keep them in different albums?

i have added pictures from my camera roll into different albums. but every time i try to delete the ones from the camera roll, it asks if i want to delete the picture from everywhere or cancel. how do i keep them in the other albums, but delete them from the camera roll?

You can't because the actual photo is in camera roll.  The albums only contain links to the photos.  If you delete the photo from camera roll it will be gone from your phone and therefore also removed from any albums that contain links to it.

  • How do I transfer pictures from a hard drive back to iphone 4s or ipod touch 5?

hello, I am trying to get pics i have taken off my phone and ipod and put them back on after tranferring them to a hard drive. any help would be appreciated. oh and windows xp

Happy new year! Now that I've told you the official answer, there are other options. If you use Google's free Picasa web albums, for example, the app "MyPics" will sync your Picasa albums to your phone, and it does a better job than the built in Photo app because it syncs over the air and preserves photo titles and comments. Dropbox also has a photo syncing option, and there are several others in the app store.

  • How to fully delete safari from mac hard drive

I'm using OSX 10.6.8 and a few weeks ago thru the automatic "Software Update" was offered an update to Safari. Unfortunately I didn't feel the need to check if it was compatible with my version of Snow Leopard. After installing, I was "then" told it was incompatible with my OS. So I re-downloaded Safari 5.1.7 and it wouldn't install, saying that there was already a newer version installed. So I deleted everything I could find that I thought was connected to the new Safari but evidently I don't know where to find it all. I also tried to upgrade my OS but was told it was incompatible, thankfully, before I bought it.
I need directions on how to dig out everything that's preventing the re-install of Safari 5.1.7, AND how to conclusively determing if Mountain Lion will work on my Mac. Is there a site online that will survey my Mac and tell me if Mountain Lion will work, and, what version.
    Thanks,
    Tom C

In order to get back Safari, you have to reinstall Snow Leopard. Insert the Mac OS X DVD, start your Mac holding the C key and reinstall OS X. You won't lose any file. After reinstalling, go to  > Software Update.
Another thing you may do is to upgrade to Mountain Lion instead of reinstalling Mac OS X Snow Leopard. Check that your Mac is compatible > http://www.apple.com/osx/specs
If it's compatible, open the App Store and purchase Mountain Lion. When the download finishes, the OS X Mountain Lion installer will show up, so follow its steps to upgrade to OS X Mountain Lion. Make a backup before upgrading to Mountain Lion and check that your applications are supported > http://www.roaringapps.com

  • Project (movie) not showing up in trash when I delete it from iMovie (version 10.0.4).  Thus, I can't figure out how to permanently delete it from the hard drive.  I'm running out of hard drive space fast!  Any ideas?

It's an iMovie Library file that you need to search for. By default iMovie Library files are in the Movies folder.
