How do I delete OS X install data

I have installed OS X Mavericks on a external hard drive. It gives me the ability to see my macintosh hd hard drive but I can't delete anything. On another forum it said it would fix everything with the hard drive if the 'os x install data' folder was renamed or deleted. But as I can't delete it, I can't fix it. Does anyone know how to delete that folder??

The topic has been much debated and analyzed over the last days / weeks. You must boot iinto SL install DVD (restart and, after chime, press C key or option key, then wait to see the boot options, then choose DVD), choose the install language, then go to the upper Apple bar, run Disk Utility, choose the disk on the left side, then reformat it with 1 partition or more, if you want more partitions. Repartitioning the disk will erase everything on the disk, including Lion recovery partition. Now you may install SL.
Warning: this will ERASE ALL YOUR DISK, so make a backup first.
I do not think Lion is so bad as you say, I have the feeling that many problems arise because Lion default installation is via upgrading SL, which may lead to numerous incompatibility issues. Using the same procedure, you may have an erase-and-install option for Lion. In order to do this, copy Lion installer on a flash drive, and install from there; when options are displayed, choose to run Disk Utility  first, and erase the disk. This will install a pure version of Lion.
IN ALL CIRCUMSTANCES, backup your essential data, at least via simply copying them unto an external drive / flash / dvd etc. Note that, as I understand, Time Machine will not restore a downgraded volume (Lion to SL), am not sure, because I do not use it. I prefer iBackup (grapefruiit.ch). Such apps have the advantage of restoring system settings to, so you do not waste time to reset your system.
Erase-and-install method is also shorter than upgrade, but—I repeat—backup your data first.

  • How can I delete or reset bookmark data in iCloud?

    How can I delete or re-set bookmark data in iCloud. I have sync'd with blank from safari, then re-loaded safari with new list. Sync to phone works fine.
    Now everytime I re-enable backup to iCloud 500 duplicates are made and all old folders restored.
    Reset should not be that hard to do. FFs I would be fine with a delete all button on the phone.
    Deleting 1000 bookmarks one by one is ridculous.
    Thanks for any suggestions.

  • How can I delete all songs and data from my 80GB ipod classic without opening itunes?

    I have an older 80GB ipod classic that works but will not play any songs. I'm trying to delete all songs and data from the hard drive to see if that will fix the problem, however, it will not appear in my itunes. I've tried various ways to help it appear in my itunes but I do not want to delete my itunes because I have another ipod that has all those songs on it.
    I was wondering if there was a way to restore my ipod back to the beginning without having to go through itunes. Thanks!

    It might, but I wouldn't bet much on it.  Either way, give it a shot.
    Otherwise, if appears in Windows an external hard disk, try a low level reformat of the device's hard drive.  See here for instructions on how to do this.

    Thanks!

    yep it would be great, to get rid of unwanted installs. or at least have an option to prevent them loading and showing. but til thats happening the above suggestion is poss. best, create new page, shuffle all the "useful" apps you dont need from system over there and place it as the very last page. any other solution would bring you into grey areas / require jailbreak

    I put my cd collection in itunes and now have duplicates of most songs (don't know how I did that). The duplicates have the exact same date and time, so the method to delete a "newer" duplicate will not work. Is there a simple way to delete exact duplicates from the itune library?

  • How to uninstall/delete software not installed through Pacman.

    I tried to search for an answer, with limited success. I have installed some stuff from external sources using various installers. In particular, I installed some stuff from Humble Bundle which, if I recall correctly, used this automated installer called Nixstaller, which I thought would register the packages in Pacman. And when I look at the website, it says that if it fails to register the software in the package manager, it will generate an uninstall script. I installed e.g. Torchlight in /usr/local/games, but there is no uninstall script to be found there, or in the generated folder in /home. Neither does it seem to be registered in Pacman. So how do I get rid of it? Is there a way to uninstall it, or would I have to remove everything manually? If I have to remove it manually, how do I know where everything is located? I assume the installation isn't necessarily limited to the /usr/local/games folder I picked and /home, so how would I go about getting rid of it all?

    Not to my knowledge.  You can ask pacman to show you ALL files not owned by a package and then begin to manually delete ones you feel do not belong.  Note that you should NOT just blindly start removing these!
    Here is ~/bin/pacman-disowned that I got from here; can't remember who authored it.
    #!/bin/sh
    tmp=${TMPDIR-/tmp}/pacman-disowned-$UID-$$
    db=$tmp/db
    fs=$tmp/fs
    mkdir "$tmp"
    trap 'rm -rf "$tmp"' EXIT
    pacman -Qlq | sort -u > "$db"
    find /bin /etc /lib /sbin /usr \
    ! -name lost+found \
    \( -type d -printf '%p/\n' -o -print \) | sort > "$fs"
    comm -23 "$fs" "$db"|less

  • How to restore deleted, but not erased, data?

    I just restored my iphone, from an older backup.  itunes says that the information is deleted from the device, but not erased. How do I recover this deleted information?

    I have never seen a message where iTunes states that data is deleted but it has not been erased.
    The only way that you can recover that data - and data is a somewhat vague term because it can refer to so many different things such as documents, contacts, notes, etc. - is to restore from a backup that contains that data or if you have a local copy of that data stored somewhere on your computer you can import it again via File Sharing, email, DropBox, etc.
    So I guess at this point the next question is what data are you trying to recover?

  • How do I delete diagnostic and usage data on my iPad 3 please

    Hi, I am very new to iPad/Apple (sorry), have been operating with Windows for so long now, and have recently bought a new iPad 3 Wi Fi Cellular.
    I was wondering around my iPad yesterday and noticed under > Settings > General > About > Diagnostics and Usage Data > Data - pages of apps
    I had downloaded and tried out etc, and than deleted those apps - no longer using them, but all this information is still on my Data page.
    Could you please tell me please how to delete all this data, I have tried unsuccessfully. I have deleted a great many apps, but the data is still there - I would  like to know how to clear or delete the diagnostic and usage data please?
    The other question I have is that all this data must be taking up kb/mb/space on my iPad.
    Thank you so much for your help and advice ~ greatly appreciated.

  • How do I delete something I install

    How do I perminately delete an application I downloaded from the web?

    If the app installed an 'uninstaller' use the uninstaller. If not, you can simply drag the app from the aplications folder to the trash and then empty the trash. Some apps will leave behind 'preference' files or other folders/file behind. If you want to get rid of those, you can do a little 'google fu' (searching) and find out what files/folders the app in question installs, and then go into your system and remove those also. There is a free removal app named "AppCleaner" some people love it, some people hate it, it can remove all the files/folders associated with the app you are deleting.

  • How can I delete my address book data

    Running Lion. I've read in several post that the data file is in home folder/library/application support/AddressBook.
    To test this I set up a temporary user account, added a few contacts to the address book, quit the application, deleted the entire AddressBook folder and contents in home folder/library/application support/AddressBook, re-launched Address Book and the new contacts I just created are still there.
    I quit address book, deleted this same folder and contents again, this time also deleted all address book preference files in library/preferences, re-launched address book and the new contacts are still there.
    Anyone know where the data file is really kept? In a brand new user account there aren't many files in home folder/library so it shouldn't be too hard to find but I sure can't seem to.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    PS. For those who want to know "why". I believe my daughter's Mac has a corrupt address book data file so I want to start over "fresh" but can't seem to locate where the true data file is.
    Thanks,

    "Perhaps for recovery or  sync, don't know"
    This was just a possible but the sync part of it really isn't possible in this case. In setting up a new temporary account on my Mac it would be an account without an iCloud or MobilMe account so there would be no syncing involved.
    Address Book data for each user's account will be stored only within that users account. The fake contacts I've created in the temporary user account certainly don't show up in any other account.
    Your behaviour "if I delete the files mentioned, there is absolutely nothing left." is exactly what I would expect. Just can't figure out (yet) what's going on, on my Mac because this expected behaviour is not happening.

  • How can I delete diagnostics and usage data from my Ipod 4.1?

I went in there to find many logs, Low Battery, Low Memory logs and Stacks which I don't even know what they are.  Is there a way to delete this?  Should I ever save any?  Are they important?  I would appreciate any help anyone can give me. Thank you in advance for any quick fix on this matter, if there is ever one lol.
